00:03:28 <rust_collector> oh well, now you know what I run, lol
00:03:36 <rust_collector> HEY! I am not selling anything (yet) this is just flooding the channel
00:03:40 <Lemon> I know everything
00:04:11 <Lemon> just avoid pasting blocks of test in irc lol
00:04:16 <Lemon> seems it doesnt like it
00:04:28 <rust_collector> anyway, I have been very happy with that machine
00:04:37 <Lemon> as long as it works !
00:05:53 <rust_collector> it has been in some office for years, then it was my computer out in the garage for a year or two, then the wife stole it, and used it as a media thing, hooked up to the tv. I stole it back last fall
00:06:43 <rust_collector> it will sort of slowly run gta5, which was interesting
00:06:54 <Lemon> heh nice bonus
00:07:02 <Lemon> heres mine
00:07:03 <Lemon> https://imgur.com/a/sVboFUg
00:07:25 <rust_collector> kid had issues on his gaming machine, so I tried it on this thing, he was super annoyed, and went down to his room
00:07:48 <Lemon> haha nice
00:10:10 <rust_collector> I do not think it ran well enough to be played, but it did something
00:10:59 <rust_collector> I miss usb3 on it, but
00:11:10 <rust_collector> oh well
00:12:35 <rust_collector> hmm, but the point was that I like the way everything fits together in the box. and all the things just hinge out of it, or slides out, like the fan and duct
00:13:06 <Lemon> ha yeah I have like 4 fan filters on mine
00:13:12 <Lemon> but the fucker is more than 30kg
00:13:39 <K> > Please, sir, I want some more.
00:13:45 <rust_collector> we have dogs, so the thing creates its own filter
00:14:07 <rust_collector> and cats
00:14:55 <Lemon> gladly cats dont go too much here
00:15:02 <Lemon> because with 8 fans...
00:15:18 <Lemon> DC Voltage 1, 10, 100, 1000V Range:
00:15:18 <Lemon> +/-0.003% rdg., +/-0.002% f.s. for 24 hours (23°C +/-1°C)
00:15:18 <Lemon> +/-0.01% rdg., +/-0.01% f.s. for 90 days
00:15:25 <Lemon> heh its not bad honestly
00:15:30 <rust_collector> that is why you do not see many cats at the airport
00:16:00 <rust_collector> they are just too fun to throw into turbines
00:16:08 <Lemon> :(((
00:16:16 <rust_collector> hah
00:16:41 <Lemon> well the dmm is paid for, he will send it this afternoon
00:16:47 <Lemon> and the wattmeter got sent this morning too
00:17:02 <Lemon> sounds like keithley 175 will have a friend
00:17:03 <rust_collector> uhm, what was the old bench meter?
00:17:07 <rust_collector> oh
00:17:09 <rust_collector> ok
00:17:19 <Lemon> its a 4.5 digits, but I love it honestly
00:17:32 <Lemon> its in really good shape, I paid 70 euros for it I think but I dont regret it
00:18:26 <Lemon> the guy's name was 'Pinard
00:18:34 <Lemon> in his honnor im going to drink a glass of gammay
00:18:40 <Lemon> well another excuse I know
00:18:48 <rust_collector> so, you are getting pretty close to your lab budget, or does multiple things of the same type not count?
00:20:22 <Lemon> hmmm lemme count
00:21:10 <rust_collector> if you only count one of each kind of thing, you have just used half?
00:21:33 <Lemon> total is around 715 euros
00:21:37 <Lemon> its alright honestly
00:21:51 <Lemon> only thing I havent counted is the box of HB stuff, as its more a collectible thing
00:21:56 <Lemon> 50 euros for them
00:22:02 <rust_collector> yeah, the first step is to admit you have a problem
00:22:24 <Lemon> :> well I always been a huge lover of vintage stuff
00:22:28 <Lemon> I just cant let them go to trash
00:22:36 <Lemon> so when I see a beautiful thing I want it to take care of it
00:22:39 <Lemon> and give it another life
00:23:51 <Lemon> ho wait no im at 665 in fact
00:23:56 <Lemon> I counted something twice
00:27:54 <Lemon> I didnt count some component kits my mother bought me
00:28:14 <Lemon> and lets not forget my father had a lot of things, like that tek ths710a, and tons of ics, various components etc
00:28:21 <rust_collector> https://www.finn.no/bap/forsale/ad.html?finnkode=140587664
00:28:29 <Lemon> honestly if I want to have all that stuff new, I dont want to know the price
00:28:33 <rust_collector> https://www.finn.no/bap/forsale/ad.html?finnkode=169115960
00:28:52 <Lemon> it looks like a simpson 260
00:28:59 <Lemon> how much is that ?
00:29:18 <rust_collector> 500 nok is around 50
00:29:29 <Lemon> its in nice shape
00:29:40 <Lemon> it reminds me of the triplett, im so sad about it honestly...
00:29:45 <Lemon> I was so happy to get one for that price
00:30:02 <rust_collector> https://www.finn.no/bap/forsale/ad.html?finnkode=169872660
00:30:17 <Lemon> I just saw them yeah
00:30:25 <Lemon> I'd buy them all if it were just me
00:30:30 <Lemon> but I dont have unlim cash
00:31:35 <Lemon> that gamay is really good
00:31:40 <rust_collector> https://www.finn.no/bap/forsale/ad.html?finnkode=169868315
00:31:51 <Lemon> some hint of wood, oak id say
00:32:21 <rust_collector> "peoples radio"
00:32:21 <Lemon> heh I have a box of 90 y/o pieces to fix remember ? :>
00:32:34 <Lemon> volksradio
00:33:03 <rust_collector> pretty much. except they quit making them when we were supposed to talk like that
00:34:16 <Lemon> id love to fix old piece of gear for a living
00:34:16 <rust_collector> heh, an old avometer, and an actual simpson 260, in yellow
00:34:37 <Lemon> yeah yellow came as akit I think
00:34:51 <Lemon> avometers were the first amp/volt/ohm all in one meters
00:34:59 <Lemon> a-amp, v-volt, o-ohms
00:35:16 <rust_collector> an expensive one for you here: https://www.finn.no/bap/forsale/ad.html?finnkode=167066130
00:35:40 <Lemon> hooo a HB
00:35:46 <Lemon> thoser arent common, elavi 11
00:36:03 <rust_collector> it is about 10 minutes from me
00:36:15 <Lemon> https://odnd.nl/lab-equipment/
00:36:24 <Lemon> check what they got, its actually decently priced
00:36:26 <rust_collector> https://www.finn.no/bap/forsale/ad.html?finnkode=167066130
00:36:31 <Lemon> I wanted to get one or two pieces from there
00:36:41 <rust_collector> 404?
00:37:24 <Lemon> ha wait
00:37:30 <Lemon> https://odnd.nl/39-lab-equipment
00:37:59 <Lemon> I think I checked the whole section 5 times
00:39:25 <rust_collector> https://odnd.nl/lab-equipment/14002-vintage-tone-generator.html
00:39:45 <Lemon> they are in nice condition
00:39:58 <Lemon> theres some HB wheatstone bridges for 24.5 euros
00:40:09 <Lemon> I was really tempted but nah Im trying to get stuff I'll use first
00:43:38 <rust_collector> ok, what is a phase meter?
00:43:52 <Lemon> thats a good question I was asking myself too
00:47:16 Join: Ysjoelfir ([email protected]) to #EEVblog
00:47:32 <Lemon> ;O
00:48:05 <rust_collector> Oh crap
00:48:22 <rust_collector> hello, mr zombie
00:48:28 <rust_collector> https://odnd.nl/lab-equipment/13357-hewlett-packard-3456a-digital-voltmeter.html
00:48:46 <rust_collector> I think it is interesting that they have so many buttons on a voltmeter
00:48:48 <Lemon> yeah I saw this one
00:48:54 <Lemon> its a really nice meter
00:49:04 <rust_collector> probably, but...
00:49:05 <Lemon> 5,5 digit but you can bring another digit I think
00:49:13 <Ysjoelfir> hi
00:49:22 <Lemon> hey bud !
00:49:27 <rust_collector> meh. it uses enough space to have 19 digits
00:49:35 * Ysjoelfir squeezes Lemon over rusty
00:49:45 <Lemon> haaaaaa
00:50:04 * Ysjoelfir watches the rust dissolve. A _collector appears.
00:50:18 <Lemon> rifleojsy I bought another dmm
00:50:21 <Lemon> ://///
00:50:31 <Ysjoelfir> I have the 3456a on my desk
00:50:38 <Lemon> https://www.leboncoin.fr/equipements_industriels/1749437881.htm/ I saw this little fella
00:50:41 <Lemon> and couldnt resist
00:51:02 <Ysjoelfir> woah!
00:51:07 <Ysjoelfir> I always wanted a systron donner
00:51:08 <Lemon> 5,5 digits, 43 euros with shipping !
00:51:20 <Lemon> working perfectly according to the dude
00:51:33 <Ysjoelfir> i paid over four times of that for my 5.5 digit meter...
00:51:49 <Lemon> see rusty I told you it was a neat deal !
00:52:08 <Lemon> this baby if calibrated within 24h can hit 0.001% dc accuracy
00:52:16 <Lemon> 0.003
00:52:18 <Lemon> sorry
00:52:35 <Lemon> theres no much info on it
00:53:10 <rust_collector> so, Ysjoelfir... what is a phasemeter
00:53:14 <Ysjoelfir> I trade that thing with you. lets say.... you get a multavi 7 for that
00:53:24 <rust_collector> not an 11?
00:53:35 <Lemon> it was a elavi 11 I think :>
00:53:43 <rust_collector> blah blah
00:54:16 <Lemon> as much as I like HB stuff, I think I have enough for some time :> I still need to fix and refurb the box full of them !
00:54:39 <Ysjoelfir> nah. A 5 would be more apropriate in exchange for a 5.5 digit meter, but i donÄt have any. And I'm generous, so I give him a 7 :) and a phasemeter can read the phase relation of AC stuff I assume?
00:55:01 <Lemon> really ? but I paid 16 euros for my multavi 5 :O
00:56:30 <Lemon> I trade you my box full of HB stuff from the 1930s for that hp 3456 :>
00:56:56 <Lemon> hmm well in fact I want a 3457 !
00:58:21 <Ysjoelfir> i wand a 3458
00:58:29 <Lemon> systron donner makes some neat nixie tube gear
00:58:40 <Ysjoelfir> made. I think they are gone?
00:58:42 <Lemon> yeah or a 2002, or an advantest
00:58:48 <Lemon> yeah made
00:58:59 <Lemon> well it seems its a branch of emcore
00:59:04 <Lemon> I dont find much infos
01:01:52 <Lemon> I think it got a 1Gohm input impedance
01:01:57 <Lemon> if thats the case thats neat
01:02:02 <rust_collector> https://odnd.nl/misc/12073-somekind-of-power-supply-in-case-.html
01:02:47 <rust_collector> Ysjoelfir, do you really want a 3458?
01:03:05 <Lemon> ho wow
01:03:13 <Lemon> I need a somekind of power supply in case
01:03:28 <rust_collector> yes, that is exactly what I thought too
01:03:38 <Lemon> I even need two I think
01:05:16 <Ysjoelfir> want? yes. need? definitely no.
01:05:19 <rust_collector> I wonder what it would cost to ship this 3458a to anywhere, after building a box and stuff
01:05:35 <Lemon> you never know when you need a somekind of power supply in a case man
01:06:08 <Lemon> its no joke
01:06:37 <Lemon> better buy two, in case your first somekind of power supply in a case fail
01:06:59 <Lemon> why does this makes me laugh so hard
01:07:44 <rust_collector> somekind was a great brand, before they were bought by someone
01:08:01 <Lemon> The Keithley 2002 offers 8 ½ -digit resolution and basic DCV accuracy of 0.0018%
01:08:37 <Lemon> DC Voltage 1, 10, 100, 1000V Range:
01:08:38 <Lemon> +/-0.003% rdg., +/-0.002% f.s. for 24 hours (23°C +/-1°C) for the systron
01:08:40 <rust_collector> if I am going to oslo one of the days, I am going to just go look at this agilent, just because
01:08:47 <Lemon> thats not a huge difference honestly
01:09:00 <K> Keithley 2015 speaks to me in my dreams
01:09:23 <Lemon> 0,0018 vs 0.003 +- 0.002
01:09:38 <Lemon> we are comparing a 5.5 digit to a 8.5 digit
01:09:52 <K> ah.
01:09:57 <K> i apologize
01:10:05 <Lemon> no nowhy
01:10:15 <Lemon> I just said because it amazed me
01:10:25 <Lemon> that theres such a tiny difference between 5 and 8 digits
01:11:28 <rust_collector> heh, lots of people are selling the 830b cheapometers for around 20euros
01:12:55 <Lemon> 0,6ppm 24h dc accuracy for a 3458a
01:12:59 <Lemon> whats that in % ?
01:14:51 <rust_collector> probably not very many
01:15:10 <Lemon> but is it as precise as somekind of power suppfffff
01:15:31 <rust_collector> no way
01:16:17 <rust_collector> hmm, the older apple keyboards were not too horribe, were they?
01:16:29 <Lemon> they were alright
01:17:08 <rust_collector> it is very compact and... compact
01:17:45 <rust_collector> and has the correct layout... I have to think about that
01:18:21 <Lemon> take a look at 60% keyboards
01:18:55 <rust_collector> I am not going to pay a lot for a keyboard, so I am just looking at used old crap
01:19:20 <rust_collector> but I do want a us layout one
01:19:32 <Lemon> I think I paid 60 for my anne pro 1
01:20:14 * K swears by apple alluminium keyboards
01:20:36 <K> https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_Keyboard#/media/File:Apple_Keyboard_with_Numeric_Keyboard_9612.jpg
01:20:46 <rust_collector> there are no issues using them with non apples?
01:21:02 <K> dunno, wouldn't think there are any
01:21:05 <K> but they are not cheap

01:53:33 <rust_collector> sure
01:54:20 <rust_collector> these days, things are pretty slow, so I often have 2-3 hours in the bunk
01:54:39 <Lord_of_nothing|43> whats your profession?
01:55:03 <rust_collector> I... most of the time drive trucks
01:55:33 <Lord_of_nothing|43> ok sleeping during the work hour is maybe not the best idea
01:56:33 <Lord_of_nothing|43> how long can you drive without a major break 8h?
01:56:35 <rust_collector> nah, it is ok. I can get paid to sleep, it is not a problem. it is mr boss man who said I had to be at point x at xx'o clock
01:57:25 <Lord_of_nothing|43> for what company do you drive?
01:58:37 <rust_collector> no, you can drive 4.5 hours, then have 45 minutes off, then a new 4.5 hours driving, 45min off, then you can drive one more hour...i think 3 times a week, then you have to have 9 hours off, before the next shift. then you have to have 45 hours off each week, before it has been 144 hours since your last weekly break
01:58:55 <rust_collector> I drive for bring, which is ie the norwegian post
01:59:19 <Lord_of_nothing|43> oh whats the wearther up there?
02:00:26 <rust_collector> today, we have wonderful spring sort of weather here in the relative south. it was -6 this morning, but +3 now, the sun is up and heating up nicely, no wind. it is a nice day
02:01:44 <Lord_of_nothing|43> thats cold tomorrow we should get to 10c
02:01:46 <rust_collector> yesterday, (and many other times) the road was closed, about 45 minutes drive from where I turn, and go back, because of bad weather
02:02:41 <rust_collector> I usually go to a place that is close to where the "highlands" start.
02:04:34 <Lord_of_nothing|43> is norway not a quite flat country?
02:05:16 <rust_collector> not exactly, no
02:05:55 <Lord_of_nothing|43> I guess i was never in norway
02:06:28 <rust_collector> down here, where I live, it is nothing special, not flat at all, but... yeah.
02:07:40 <rust_collector> I can see the sea from my window, and I am at about the same height as the highest point in denmark
02:08:31 <rust_collector> but nature is pretty varied here. it is not a small country. just a small population

02:29:11 <Lemon> something really nice
02:29:31 <rust_collector> just give him your money, and tell him to just sens allthethings
02:29:44 <Lemon> he sells a wavetek model 164 in perfect condition, its a waveform gen that goes from 30MICRO hertz to 30 MEGA hertz
02:29:49 <Lemon> and it got many functions, many waveforms
02:30:00 <Lemon> and he want a decent price for it

02:31:47 <rust_collector> well... you are doing ok-ish on your budget....
02:32:01 <rust_collector> what other signal thing do you have?
02:32:10 <rust_collector> or didn't you get it
02:32:31 <Lemon> a french made one I paid a few euros for it, goes from 0.02 to 2mhz, not the best but it works
02:32:35 <Lemon> but man I cant let it go
02:32:37 <Lemon> I will buy it
02:32:39 <Lemon> I WILL BUY IT
02:32:49 <rust_collector> how much is the french one?
02:33:18 <Lemon> remember I paid 30 euros for one + a cable, but it came with a broken knob, so I paid an additionnal 8 euros and he sent me another different one with close specs
02:33:31 <rust_collector> ah yes
02:33:35 <Lemon> it works and everything but its lowend
02:33:40 <Lemon> compared to the model 164
02:33:44 <rust_collector> I am low end
02:33:46 <Lemon> 30uHz is impressive
02:33:50 <Lemon> you are high end
02:33:54 <Lemon> you are summit
02:34:01 <rust_collector> No, I am just tall, that is different
02:34:20 <Lemon> he also sells a triple output supply for 100 euros but im not interested, specs are like mine
02:34:25 <rust_collector> it is just all you short fuckers makes me look so over the top
02:34:31 <Lemon> I already have the topward and another cheapo

02:35:09 <rust_collector> nah, get that thing. If you are not in a rush, I will buy one of your low end things later
02:35:21 <Lemon> yeah why not !
02:35:34 <Lemon> I say lowend but they are well built honestly
02:35:51 <Lemon> one got am/fm modulation, the other got sweep modes I think
02:35:53 <rust_collector> as long as they work reliably, i do not care
02:36:15 <rust_collector> I have a chinky diy kit, with known issues
02:37:43 <Lemon> well sine/triangular waves are perfect, square waves are not the best but well
02:37:43 <rust_collector> well, we can chat about that some other time. go get that thing, it is very neat looking
02:37:49 <Lemon> its hard to get a nice one
02:38:01 <rust_collector> Meh, square vawes are easy enough to make
02:38:09 <Lemon> I told him I want it, and if he can do me a little drop on the price
02:38:13 <Lemon> who knows
02:39:17 <Lemon> but yeah I really wanted a nice function gen, and 30mhz is a lot higher than my expectations
02:39:24 <Lemon> 10mhz ones were already more than 100 euros
02:39:34 <Lemon> im not talking about chinese stuff, I dont trust those
02:39:44 <Lemon> I prefer a nice 30mhz one than a shitty 60mhz one
02:40:13 <Lemon> The model 164 Sweep Generator offers an extended waveform
02:40:14 <Lemon> versatility plus a frequency range that spans twelve
02:40:14 <Lemon> decades, from 30 µHz (9.2 hours per cycle) to 30 MHz.
02:40:14 <Lemon> The waveforms available are sine, square, triangle,
02:40:14 <Lemon> trapezoidal and positive and negative rectangular and
02:40:14 <Lemon> trapezoidal pulse, each with variable amplitude, dc offset

03:11:08 <Lemon> you got one of those chinse ones ?
03:11:17 <Lord_of_nothing|6391> ?
03:11:20 <Lemon> I got a 'uniroi' single output, 30v 5amps I think
03:11:54 <rust_collector> yeah, I have one of the little module things, and a yeehaw 15v/1a one
03:12:43 <rust_collector> And, they do just fine, I guess. the module thing will do 32v at 3a or something
03:13:04 <rust_collector> if I need more power, I have that, but that comes with less control
03:13:08 <Lemon> their problem is output noise
03:13:17 <rust_collector> the module thing, yes
03:13:17 <Lemon> but for digital things they are fine
03:13:49 <rust_collector> the yihua is linear with a little transformer, opamp and some transistor
03:14:41 <Lemon> better
03:14:52 <Lemon> hmm they made a mistake in the manual of the wavetek
03:15:01 <Lemon> they state 30uHz minimum, as 0.0003 hz
03:15:07 <rust_collector> I have been wondering if I should look into upgrading that one a bit. I am pretty sure i can replace the transformer and the transistor, and see what happens, lol
03:15:08 <Lemon> they missed a zero
03:15:18 <rust_collector> oh no!
03:15:38 <rust_collector> I have to say I wonder when you would use that

03:19:49 <jakenixon> :P
03:19:50 <Lord_of_nothing|6391> nobody is here
03:20:05 <jakenixon> I have the BM235 and I love it. I'm looking for a solution to interface the test leads with a breadboard
03:20:05 <Lord_of_nothing|6391> Lemon do you see anyone here?
03:20:24 <Lord_of_nothing|6391> I guess in a Ghost Town are more people than here
03:20:36 <Lemon> hmmm
03:20:42 <jakenixon> Right now I'm using wires with alligator clips on both sides, clipping to the lead tips and arduino style wires
03:20:49 <Lemon> usually I probe right into the breadboard
03:20:56 <Lemon> or that yes
03:21:27 <jakenixon> The probes are too thick to go into the breadboard
03:21:50 <jakenixon> There are alligator clip to pigtail packs on amazon but they *all* have bad QC
03:21:57 <Lemon> even the tips ?
03:21:57 <Lemon> that gotta be some thick bois
03:22:22 <jakenixon> The included probes are like 2.5mm in diameter
03:22:29 <Lemon> I think your best bet is either to play with alligator clips as you did, or build something
03:22:40 <Lemon> damn thats thicc
03:22:43 <jakenixon> Would something like this work with the included leads?
03:22:44 <jakenixon> https://www.fluke.com/en-us/product/accessories/adapters/fluke-tp920
03:23:10 <jakenixon> The 2.5mm diameter probes that came with the BM235 are the same thiccness as every other multimeter probe that I've used?
03:23:36 <jakenixon> It's just that breadboard sockets are thinn
03:23:58 <Lemon> well my mueller ones are 2mm at the start, and the tip is like 0.2mm maybe
03:24:05 <Lemon> they are really pointy
03:24:13 <Lemon> but yeah those needles would work
03:25:06 <jakenixon> They'll interface with my leads even though they aren't Fluke?
03:26:12 <rust_collector> I think they just "need" the little notch, or whatever you would call it, near the tip
03:26:33 <jakenixon> just the tip
03:26:39 <jakenixon> alright, thanks everyone
03:26:45 <rust_collector> You could probably just jam in a nail, and it would also work, but.
03:27:26 <rust_collector> arrgh, what do you call that little notch
03:27:29 <jakenixon> I mean even a finishing nail is too thick
03:27:43 <rust_collector> for the fluke kit?
03:27:54 <jakenixon> for the breadboard
03:28:13 Join: Lord_of_nothing|63 ([email protected]) to #EEVblog
03:28:19 <rust_collector> I mean, you do probably not need the notch in the probe tip, but it sort of locks into place in it.

03:51:24 <Lord_of_nothing|63> cats and dogs are cute
03:52:05 <rust_collector> yeah, meercats are also cute, and pretty evil
03:52:24 <Lord_of_nothing|63> meercat?

04:12:19 <rust_collector> HELLO SIR! IS INTERNET SECURITY COMPANY!!! YOU HAVE VIRUS ON YOUR INTERNET!!!
04:15:07 <rust_collector> ok, good night. have fun
04:15:33 <Lemon> im back
04:15:40 <Lemon> I went out to walk the doggo
04:15:43 <rust_collector> yay?
04:16:10 <Lemon> and I found the real manual of the 164
04:16:37 <Lemon> they indeed state 0.00003hz on this one :>
04:16:41 <Lemon> I feel better now
04:16:47 <rust_collector> and it sys it will do something close to 10% of what you tell it
04:17:07 <Lemon> http://manuals.repeater-builder.com/te-files/WAV/WAV%20164%20INST.pdf
04:17:15 <Lemon> 30uHz is 9,2 hours per cycle
04:17:21 <Lemon> I wonder what is the use for that
04:17:24 <Lemon> but im glad I can do it
04:17:37 <rust_collector> yeah, me too
04:18:09 <Lemon> the dmm got a 1Gohm input impedance
04:18:21 <Lemon> thats really nice, thats the main reason why peeps use VTVM's sometimes
04:19:52 <Lemon> im starting to lack space on the desk
04:20:01 <Lemon> I need to find a way to put screens higher
04:20:05 <Lemon> but they are at their limit
04:21:13 <Lemon> theres so many waveforms
04:21:19 <Lemon> its almost an arbitrary gen
04:24:25 <rust_collector> you should make a random signal generator
04:24:58 <Lemon> heh some chinese gen got that function
04:25:19 <rust_collector> yeah, I have that one. you just have to feed it more than 12v
04:25:29 <rust_collector> butt... time for a nap
04:25:42 <Lemon> have a good nap I guess
04:26:02 <rust_collector> have enjoys mr sir, i wish you a nose full of happiness

04:26:57 <rust_collector> but as I skipped sleeping yesterday, probably not
04:27:09 <Lemon> better sleep then
04:27:47 <rust_collector> yes, that would be better
04:28:03 <rust_collector> I am not 30 any more

05:17:05 <Lemon> I bought something else with the dmm
05:17:18 <Lemon> guess what is it !
05:17:52 <Ysjoelfir> a new lung for me?
05:18:06 <Lemon> ho I might have that in stock
05:18:15 <Lemon> but they are a bit old and rusty
05:19:04 <Ysjoelfir> is it full of yellow slime?
05:19:16 <Lemon> hmm id say black tar instead
05:21:24 <Lemon> lemme say the specs of that new anchor
05:21:33 <Lemon> 0,00003hz to 30mhz
05:21:50 <Ysjoelfir> nah. thats of no use for me.
05:21:54 <Ysjoelfir> hmmm
05:22:14 <Lemon> 10us to 100s sweep/step time
05:22:14 <Ysjoelfir> so .03 to 30 millihertz?
05:22:22 <Lemon> Mhz
05:22:23 <Lemon> sorry
05:22:46 <Lemon> eight selectable waveforms
05:23:07 <Lemon> tons of functions I have no idea about what they do
05:23:18 <Lemon> perfect condition, like really
05:23:28 <Lemon> a nice Wavetek model 164
05:25:54 <Ysjoelfir> could it be....
05:25:55 <Ysjoelfir> one sec
05:25:59 <Ysjoelfir> yep
05:26:05 <Ysjoelfir> I had three of those once
05:26:20 <Lemon> haha nice ! how did that happen ?
05:26:44 <Ysjoelfir> I got a car full of stuff that the university threw away
05:26:59 <Lemon> lucky bastard !
05:27:15 <Lemon> I saw those going for several hundreds
05:27:30 <Ysjoelfir> eg. 2 agilent U1252B
05:27:43 <Ysjoelfir> a HP function gen
05:27:53 <Ysjoelfir> many multavis
05:27:59 <Ysjoelfir> and the best of all
05:28:08 <Ysjoelfir> I just cant remember what that was
05:28:15 <Lemon> I bet it was one of your biggest score
05:28:42 <Ysjoelfir> actually yes.
05:28:48 <Ysjoelfir> especially the thing I forgot about
05:28:55 <Lemon> I would have been like a kid in a candy store
05:29:02 <Lemon> a nice dmm maybe ?
05:29:24 <Ysjoelfir> No, i know what it was, but cant remember the name. I forgot because I sold it on ebay and forgot to set it to buy now
05:29:28 <Ysjoelfir> so it went as an auction
05:29:38 <Ysjoelfir> and the time I noticed, it already hat two biddings
05:29:43 <Ysjoelfir> so no chance to cancle that
05:29:47 <Ysjoelfir> it went for 50€
05:29:52 <Lemon> no...
05:29:59 <Lemon> I would have say 'ok fuck my account'
05:30:50 <Ysjoelfir> It was a Bruel and Kjaer dual channel Spectrum/Audio/Vibration analyser + cart + noise source + two microphones
05:30:58 <Ysjoelfir> but i cant remember the model
05:31:10 <Lemon> but you sent it ???
05:31:18 <Ysjoelfir> it got picked up
05:31:33 <Lemon> you should have said 'sorry I realized its broken' or 'it got stolen' even if you get a blame on ebay
05:31:37 <Lemon> god dammit
05:31:45 <Ysjoelfir> it was worth around 5 to 8000€
05:33:49 <Lemon> but but
05:33:56 <Lemon> I dont get it, why you didnt said
05:33:59 <Lemon> like, you made a mistake or something
05:34:05 <Lemon> even if ebay bans you, np
05:34:13 <Lemon> in fact you have one chance I think
05:35:32 <Ysjoelfir> well, for one simple reason: i am honest with my sales. sure, I kicked myself in the butt not only once
05:35:52 <Lemon> yeah dude I can understand that, if it was a 200 euros item ok
05:35:58 <Lemon> but we are talking about several thousands
05:36:01 <Lemon> mistakes happen
05:37:07 <Ysjoelfir> second reason: i was somehow happy that it was gone
05:37:10 <Ysjoelfir> that thing was huzge
05:37:18 <Lemon> D:
05:37:29 <Lemon> I can help you get rid of some stuff you know !
05:37:31 <Ysjoelfir> (found the model, btw. It was a 2031 that sale for way less today, if you can get one at all)
05:38:06 <Ysjoelfir> https://www.w.helmut-singer.de/stock/-1848554566.html
05:38:08 <Ysjoelfir> so around 1k€
05:39:26 <Lemon> impressive thing !
05:39:34 <Lemon> do you remember how much you sold models 164's ?
05:39:45 <Lemon> I saw some for 300-400
05:40:11 <Ysjoelfir> i gifted two and one (that was mechanically damaged) got sold for around 100
05:40:34 <Lemon> ok well I paid 100 with shipping for it, and its really in pristine shape
05:40:37 <Lemon> not that bad I guess
05:41:00 <Lemon> btw do you have any idea of an application with 30 micro hz ?
05:44:00 <Lemon> I had a hard time finding a good waveform gen for a decent price, 10mhz ones with only a few functions were going for 100+
05:44:13 <Lemon> so when I saw that one, from the same seller of the 5.5digit systron donner dmm
05:44:18 <Lemon> screw it I took it
05:44:29 <Lemon> so 143 for both :> thats a nice score !
05:44:48 <Ysjoelfir> I heard you wanted to tell him to send the donner to me instead, didn't you?
05:45:38 <Lemon> im afraid he was a fast dude and already shipped it :/
05:45:51 <Lemon> ho btw
05:45:59 <Lemon> whats your best dmm the 3456a ?
05:46:52 <Ysjoelfir> the 3456a is sittong on my workbench at work, so its not mine
05:47:01 <Ysjoelfir> my best one should be the keithley 199
05:47:19 <Lemon> hoo ok
05:47:25 <Lemon> we will both have a 5.5 digit then :>
05:47:35 <Ysjoelfir> but more often i use said two agilent u1252
05:48:01 <Lemon> well I could live with a 4.5 honestly
05:48:06 <Lemon> its rare to need more resolution
05:49:25 <Lemon> well I might get the 6.5 digits fluke :> once we set it up with mamalala
05:49:29 <Lemon> and the hp counter !
05:49:54 <Lemon> I really dont know how it will fit on the bench
05:56:28 <Ysjoelfir> I cut a nice blue bottle.... now I think how I could smooth the rim of my new glass
05:56:49 <Ysjoelfir> I'm to lazy to just sand it down
05:57:08 <Ysjoelfir> I think about building a rotary platform and place a blowtorch in front of the rim of the glass
05:58:12 <Lemon> just sand it on cement, like the border of your window, or floor if you have some cement floor
05:58:21 <Lemon> been there done that
05:58:44 <Ysjoelfir> to lazy for sanding :)
05:58:58 <Lemon> it takes minutes !
05:59:15 <Ysjoelfir> building the rotary table should take hours!
06:02:24 <Lemon> hrhmmm
06:02:44 <Lemon> ho hey I got new knipex pliers !
06:02:50 <Lemon> 160mm needlenose

06:07:52 <Lord_of_nothing|63> Who here would make an account in the "Ondó Bank"?
06:09:03 <Lemon> I don't fully understand your request, kind sir
06:09:26 <Lord_of_nothing|63> i want scam the scammer with a fake bank
06:09:58 <Lord_of_nothing|63> and every fake bank need a working domain
06:10:36 <Lord_of_nothing|63> but i dont want that the austrian gov. is make a trial
06:11:19 <Lord_of_nothing|63> so the Name of the fake Bank must be notabile a see as fake
06:11:42 <Lord_of_nothing|63> The Idea was to name it "Ondó Bank"
06:12:11 <Lord_of_nothing|63> So would you open an account at the Ondó Bank?
06:14:28 <Lemon> well I'm afraid that my interest is minimal on that subject, as I don't really want to take a part in that trickery, but why don't you make one yourself ?

06:22:22 <Lemon> bruh I got mirc, but for some reasons I cant connect to there anymore, since this afternoon
06:22:51 <Ysjoelfir> use adiirc, works. all other i tried were somehow flawed
06:23:07 <Lemon> thats strange, mirc worked flawlessly for years when I was young
06:23:22 <Ysjoelfir> mirc now is nothing compared to mirc then
06:23:29 <Ysjoelfir> it isn't even free anymore
06:23:56 <Lemon> I'll try adi then !
06:26:21 <Lemon> the dude is sending the wavetek tommorow

06:26:33 <Lemon> he was a quick boi
06:28:23 <Lemon> I need to get some op amps
06:28:26 <Lemon> I dont have any
06:41:03 <Lemon> do you have a spectrum analyzer ?
06:42:25 <Ysjoelfir> a working one? nope. A broken one that I maybe fix when I have the time to check the 5000 wire wrapped ICs... yes
06:42:51 <Lemon> its a bit magical for me, I dont know much about them
06:43:09 <Lemon> can you give me a quick explaination of it ?
06:43:15 <Lemon> if you dont mind
06:44:17 <Ysjoelfir> depends on the speccy you have. some can only show you a fft of your signal, the better ones (network analyzers) have a tracking generator that lets you see how a "thing" behaves in respect to the frequency
06:44:46 <Lemon> so network analyzers are full blown spec analyzers ?
06:45:03 <Ysjoelfir> more or less
06:45:18 <Lemon> it can do what a spec an does and more ?
06:45:38 <Ysjoelfir> depends on the speccy
06:45:57 <Lemon> they are expensive beasts, thats why I never really looked at them
06:46:05 <Ysjoelfir> yep
06:46:05 <Lemon> I still have trouble understanding some basic things
06:46:16 <Ysjoelfir> I paid 149 for my broken ancient one
06:46:30 <Lemon> heh thats alright if its fixable I guess
06:46:35 <Lemon> the cheapest I saw was like 500
06:47:00 <Ysjoelfir> remember that it's an very ancient one.
06:47:07 <Ysjoelfir> its a nicolet... somethingsomething
06:47:13 <Lemon> like 50 years ancient ?
06:47:39 <Ysjoelfir> yes

07:01:23 <Ysjoelfir> yes, but take a look at the inside (simmilar model) https://www.amplifier.cd/Test_Equipment/other/660b.htm
07:01:47 <Ysjoelfir> you may understand why I don't want to start working on it
07:02:05 <Lemon> :OO
07:02:17 <Lemon> what is that pool of wires ??
07:02:29 <Lemon> fully discrete component logic ?
07:02:48 <Lemon> that reminds me of those memory modules of appolo
07:02:59 <Lemon> made with wires and small c clamps, sewed by hand
07:03:07 <Ysjoelfir> yep
07:03:15 <Ysjoelfir> its called wirewrap technology
07:03:22 <Lemon> hooooo ok !
07:03:28 <Lemon> like my father's 6502 computer
07:03:33 <Lemon> but much bigger
07:03:46 <Lemon> a knowledge thats slowly dying

12:08:22 <DHess_US> Topped off car battery, put it on charger. Of course I used a 4 digit 0.1% multimeter.
12:15:14 <T3sl41> i did that back in november, and i've been driving regularly again so it hasn't been dropping off
12:15:26 <T3sl41> still, if it gets cold enough it doesn't start, i won't be surprised
12:19:03 <DHess_US> It has been starting hard recently. I'll check the battery terminals tomorrow but probably just need a new battery.
12:19:18 <DHess_US> The battery is old enough to be worn out.
12:19:36 <DHess_US> Replacing it is on the agenda.
12:20:23 <DHess_US> Just going to be extra cold tonight.
12:20:34 <T3sl41> the last several years i've had it almost good as new after one good long soak, seems to help a lot
12:21:04 <DHess_US> I'm afraid to check the weather forecast again. Every time I do the low drops a few degrees. So if I check it too much, the carbon dioxide is going to freeze out of the atmosphere.
12:21:49 <DHess_US> Yep, dropped another degree.
12:22:00 <T3sl41> which, since global warming is a thing, means it heats up somewhere else too
12:22:21 <T3sl41> australia kind of doesn't need more fires, they'd likely appreciate you not continuing to refresh
12:22:28 Nick: T3sl41 is now known as T3sl4
12:23:46 <DHess_US> It is too bad they didn't call it global enthalpy.

17:25:59 Join: Ysjoelfir ([email protected]) to #EEVblog
17:26:02 <T3sl4> o/
17:26:21 <Ysjoelfir> Hoi
17:26:30 <steve30> hi
17:26:39 * Ysjoelfir is slightly less dead than yesterday
17:37:13 * T3sl4 serves Ysjoelfir a roasted head of garlic, just in case
17:37:27 <T3sl4> which hmm, i have a head of garlic i should roast
17:37:28 <T3sl4> hmmmmmmmmmmm
17:37:39 <Ysjoelfir> woah, thanks <3 I love roasted garlic
17:40:38 <Ysjoelfir> lol? take a look at this www.aliexpress.com/item/32956882032.html
17:40:53 <Ysjoelfir> especially the Ext. Temp meter
17:41:47 <Ysjoelfir> I'm not quite sure this is reading correctly the external temperature.... at least if "External" isn't the chinese word for "in the combustion chamber"
17:41:50 <T3sl4> x100?
17:42:14 <Ysjoelfir> yes. 650°C external temp would be a bit warm for my taste
17:43:22 <T3sl4> the caption lower down says exhaust, which checks out
17:44:02 <Ysjoelfir> oh, does it? then it would be ok
17:45:17 <T3sl4> https://youtu.be/c2eWHNSaSZU
17:46:00 <Ysjoelfir> yikes oO that looks both scary and beautiful at once
17:46:33 <T3sl4> hrm, still not a great video... anyway, they can get pretty toasty
17:46:56 <T3sl4> understandably you want to use stainless or better for something like that, but regular cars are fine with cast iron and such
17:49:35 <Ysjoelfir> indeed. it's also a question of which car you use. I recently let the exhaust on my old volvo being exchanged since I lost some parts of it. the mechanic also left the protective film on, meaning "it's going to burn away anyways".
17:49:37 <Ysjoelfir> well....
17:49:44 <Ysjoelfir> near the turbo its gone, yes
17:49:56 <Ysjoelfir> but right after the..... erm... whats that in english...
17:50:01 <Ysjoelfir> catalytic converter
17:50:10 <Ysjoelfir> it's all still good
17:50:58 <Ysjoelfir> on my previous kia I wouldn't want to touch any part of the exhaust at all, it was so hot that it melted through my shoe when i touched the end pipe
17:51:28 <Ysjoelfir> even though that thing had only 55 HP
17:52:40 <T3sl4> last year i got a new exhaust for my celica, which happened to be a mostly stainless aftermarket set
17:54:27 <T3sl4> i'm honestly curious when the rest of the thing rusts out under me
17:54:44 <T3sl4> the exhaust, or most of it anyway, will easily outlive the rest, it seems
17:56:58 <Ysjoelfir> I decided to get a stainless exhaust for the volvo since its engine is nearly new with 460.000km.
17:57:24 <Ysjoelfir> the non stianless exhausts crumble to dust after around 2 years since volvo (or better geely) decided to outsource that to a polish manufacturer and reduce the wall thickness from 2mm to 0.8mm
17:58:01 <Ysjoelfir> my original non stainless exhaust held up for..... 21 years
17:58:21 <T3sl4> yikes
17:59:21 <T3sl4> i'm over 320kmi (>500kkm) on mine
18:00:13 <T3sl4> apparently it got a ton of highway use before i got it, i've only put on about 80kmi
18:00:30 <T3sl4> it wasn't in terrible shape when i got it, some rusty decay but the last years in our salty winters have really done it in
18:04:55 <Ysjoelfir> how long are the celicas known to work?
18:05:45 <Ysjoelfir> the 460Mm on the volvo are no problem at all, it doesn't even have any rust as far as i know, except from a tiiiiny spot near the windshield where a stone hit the frame.
18:06:14 <Ysjoelfir> https://www.volvoclub.org.uk/miles.php
18:10:14 <T3sl4> think i lucked out, (manual transmission) celicas seem to last a long time
18:10:34 <Ysjoelfir> nice :)
18:10:40 <T3sl4> the engine is slightly leaking coolant, and consumes oil modestly, it's not exactly a spring hen
18:14:21 <Ysjoelfir> I was lucky when I bought the volvo 2 years ago. It was sold as not working, shutting off all of the sudden mid driving,...
18:15:30 <T3sl4> lovely
18:15:37 <Ysjoelfir> I got all of the bills from the previous owner and calculated a bit, he spent around 66.000€ in repairs in the last 20 years.
18:15:55 <T3sl4> i had that once, shut down on the highway, had to get a tow and a replacement ignition/disty
18:16:02 <T3sl4> yikes
18:16:45 <Ysjoelfir> well, he was rich and went to the mechanic for every fart. like "oh, the wipers aren't good anymore, please change them!"
18:17:13 <T3sl4> haha
18:17:24 <Ysjoelfir> the "shutting off" problem was known for three years before i purchased it and the mechanic billed around 7500€ in that time for replacing more or less all significant parts
18:17:59 <Ysjoelfir> so it has new airflow sensor, crank shaft sensor, knocking sensor, this sensor, that sensor, new ECU, even a new head gasket
18:18:15 <Ysjoelfir> the car went out once on me, it took me 10 minutes to find the failure...
18:18:59 <Ysjoelfir> the mechanic once changed the cable from the crankshaft sensor and used those pesky heatshrink-glue-solder connectors. you know which I mean?
18:19:42 <Ysjoelfir> www.conrad.de/de/p/tru-components-736373-stossverbinder-mit-schrumpfschlauch-0-304-mm-0-705-mm-vollisoliert-rot-1-st-1566694.html
18:19:43 <Ysjoelfir> those
18:20:35 <T3sl4> yum
18:20:43 <Ysjoelfir> sadly, the cable and this specific "repair" spot runs near the turbocharger.... and whe nthe car heats up, the solder inside those connectors get soft, contact fails, car stalls.
18:21:21 <Ysjoelfir> I replaced those three connectors with proper crim connectors, added heatshrink and tied them away from the turbo - no problems since then.
18:21:32 <T3sl4> that was the actual problem? how does that happen in the first place tho
18:21:40 <Ysjoelfir> yes, that was the problem.
18:22:18 <Ysjoelfir> I assume they damaged the small wires of the sensor while replacing it and just bodged a connector from who knows where on it
18:22:45 <Ysjoelfir> the connector at least wasn't made by volvo, it had completely different cables than the factory wiring loom
18:23:09 <T3sl4> and not routed per factory spec either, i suppose
18:23:15 <Ysjoelfir> yep
18:24:37 <Ysjoelfir> i thought about writing a letter to the previous owner. but somehow... meh.
