01:02:52 <Raikuma> Hi
02:35:14 <Steven> yo
03:17:49 <Avatar> yo
03:17:59 <Avatar> subtier 5-6 didn't fare well
03:22:41 <Avatar> unfortunately for them they didn't have a roc with spirited charge and a lance.
03:28:46 <Brunius> heh
03:31:09 <Avatar> they spent the entire encounter right up the back next to the corridor they came in, pretty much spending cures
03:31:21 <Brunius> the one where kaleb died?
03:31:37 <Avatar> in the final room
03:31:42 <Avatar> I can't remember which room kaleb died in?
03:32:00 <Avatar> man kaleb would have been screwed beyond belief, after seeing those stats
03:32:14 <Avatar> at least these guys didn't need to focus on sneak attack and/or had armour
03:32:28 <Avatar> it wasn't the guy we had to get past to sound the gong
03:32:44 <Avatar> they managed to pass that after some trouble
03:32:45 <Brunius> I think that was the one where kaleb died
03:33:00 <Avatar> that guy's focus isn't even really to kill you
03:34:21 <Avatar> he can kill you by accident, but if your team is there helping you, he has other priorities
03:41:35 <Steven> well we played emerald spire today... just got completely fucked.
03:41:45 <Avatar> is it a hard module?
03:43:00 <Steven> Fireball, Lightning bolt, followed up by an Ice Storm.
03:43:58 <Steven> Ice storm was done on top of 3 party members all currently at negative hit points.
03:44:38 <Steven> Well it is alright at some parts, and then its just like /gearcheck /optimizationcheck
03:46:54 <Steven> like the last level was pretty fun... we ran into some tough fights
03:48:33 <Avatar> gearcheck optimisationcheck sounds kind of shit
03:51:14 <Steven> and then the last fight was hey here is a creature that has +8 to hit for 2d4+13 with reach while power attacking and you fight him underwater
03:52:05 <Steven> so you cant 5ft step up to him and get out of reach range, you have to make a swim check followed by an acrobatics check
03:53:41 <Steven> he has a swim speed so on his next turn he 5ft swims back and so it basically a do you have a high con score fight.
03:55:00 <Steven> the fight is stacked against you pretty decently.
04:00:13 <Steven> and then on this level the fight was a cr4 automaton, a cr 5 minataur, and a cr 7 evoker wizard and two traps that have +10 to hit for 1d8+1 18-20 crit range. Our 5 level 5's got pretty boned by the encounter
04:00:35 <Steven> but hey... we won... 3/5 party members dead.
04:01:46 <Steven> anyway, we have decided to come back with team paladin.
04:02:12 <Steven> 5 paladin characters each one doing something a little different then the others.
04:02:48 <Steven> one person is going natural weapon paladin, then i think we have ranged paladin, a tank paladin, healing paladin, and then somethin else.
04:02:59 <Steven> I'm doing the healer cause nobody else is willing to play one.
04:06:37 <Steven> Hospitaler/Oath of Charity Paladin.
04:22:22 <Steven> okay now its a Hospitaler/oath of charity/holy guide paladin.
04:22:46 <Steven> I'm never going to attack people, so i have to find something to do with my Smite evil... might as well spend it to give people teamwork feats.
04:24:45 <Avatar> man at my table on blood 5-6
04:24:53 <Avatar> they were actually cakewalking the first half of it
04:25:33 <Avatar> then they come to the oni and were suddenly like holy wtf
04:26:05 <Avatar> the party was a bard, gunslinger, 1cleric/4 sorcerer and a paladin
04:26:47 <Avatar> the paladin dropped but was able to get up without getting killed thanks to the bard doing some crazy shenanigans to get behind him, so forced his attention
04:27:04 <Avatar> the bard got his attention too well unfortunately and got whooped and thrown into an alcove
04:27:12 <Avatar> and then the gunslinger did enough damage because nobody else really could
04:27:19 <Avatar> and they were sweating from that
04:27:36 <Avatar> then they walk into the last room with the elementals, after sliding down and bumping into a wall
04:27:44 <Avatar> and they couldn't get past the first wave
04:28:08 <Avatar> all the other tables were waiting for too long and they had to win by default with other pathfinders stepping in to help
04:28:26 <Steven> damn... sounds rough.
04:28:33 <Avatar> the undine bard realised he had a trick up his sleeve and wandered around the outside of the room, and took out a dust of dryness
04:28:48 <Avatar> and it failed its fort save by one and the room was all YAY!!!!!!!!
04:29:07 <Avatar> that's basically as far as they got before they had to win by default on that wave
04:29:14 <Avatar> then they had to deal with this scorching ray monk
04:29:43 <Avatar> they were still wounded from the trap and the elementals and were just constantly healing with wands and the level 1 cleric's channel
04:30:02 <Avatar> they got one channel from the tier 10-11 at one point, but then couldn't later because they were standing on the other side of the room apparently
04:30:19 <Avatar> like they were still in the corridor afraid to enter while the cleric was all the way over
04:30:50 <Avatar> when the gunslinger finally got to hit him with touch AC and got past his displacement, he realised oh, actually he has deflect arrows
04:31:32 <Avatar> they were losing their shit a bit at how hopeless it seemed and the gunslinger fired two shots in sequence
04:31:39 <Avatar> he misfired on the first one and misfired again on the second one
04:32:00 <Avatar> he didn't know what the rules were on an exploding gun because it had never happened before
04:32:20 <Avatar> I didn't know either despite having a level 12 gunslinger, because you don't fire a gun after misfiring it without clearing it, ever
04:33:28 <Steven> unless you have a reroll... they hey why the fuck not.
04:36:56 <Avatar> there was a bit where the paladin seemed to have the best hope of doing any damage at all to it for just one turn, and then he rolled a 1
04:37:28 <Avatar> I wasn't going to give my shirt allowance to the table, but they were doing so utterly poorly I said they could use it if they wanted and they all agreed, and of course they did, and he still missed on the reroll
04:43:38 <Steven> sounds like they had a rough go of it.
04:43:50 <Steven> i need 2 feats and a teamwork feat.
04:43:56 <Steven> an then my character is done.
04:46:33 <Avatar> toughness
04:48:26 <Avatar> I remembered the theatre being a good encounter when I played it, but it was kind of terrible on this go-around because they don't seem to be given much to actually succeed on it
04:48:48 <Avatar> and doubling the number of stat blocks for the bad guys doesn't fucking help when it's on 8 pages
05:19:43 <Steven> yeah.
05:20:12 <Steven> my room mates are hopeless.
05:20:33 <Steven> they were like there is not anything to eat except plain hamburgers.
05:20:40 <Steven> which is what they had for dinner.
05:21:15 <Steven> i just went in the kitchen, and i've got garlic and herb angel hair pasta, a fish filet and steamed broccoli
05:23:43 <Mekkis> Avatar, I did tell you that playing specials at tier 5-6 is a bad idea
06:16:55 <Avatar> did you
06:17:01 <Avatar> why is it a bad idea to play specials at 5-6
06:20:31 <Mekkis> At least in the first two specials I played (Year of Shadow Lodge, Blood Under Absalom, 5-6 level is where a character has a few powerful per-day abilities, but not enough beef to be able to maintain that sort of presence for the entire scenario
06:23:48 <Steven> Alright paladin done... It just feels less useful then a cleric or a life oracle in terms of healing potential.
06:26:21 <Steven> level 5, Standard action Lay on Hands 2d6+50% healing to a target adjacent to me, within 30ft Target 2d6 w/ Word of healing, Standard Action Channel 1d6 All targets.
06:26:57 <Avatar> interesting theory
06:27:07 <Steven> vs a life oracle that would just have selective channeling and 3d6 healing.
06:27:26 <Steven> or a cleric that would have the same thing.
06:27:33 <Avatar> blood under absalom did have a day or two where you could recharge spells/class features
06:27:50 <Avatar> (which I didn't really remember the first time around)
06:28:03 <Steven> my favorite levels to play are about 5-7
06:28:34 <Avatar> of course anything is going to feel less useful compared to a cleric or life oracle in terms of healing potential
06:28:55 <Avatar> that is like saying you've rolled up a wizard but it just feels like it has less fighting potential than a fighter
06:29:10 * Steven thinks back to hi melee wizard.
06:29:32 <Steven> mmmm melee wizard.
06:33:02 <Avatar> oh uh
06:33:05 <Avatar> I picked up a sylph boon
06:33:06 <Mekkis> Avatar, I know
06:33:11 <Avatar> are sylphs any good
06:33:39 <Steven> they are not a bad race.
06:33:44 <Avatar> I usually try my best to get rid of race boons but something about the name sylph sounds appealing?
06:33:45 <Mekkis> it had one encounter, one rest; one encounter, one rest; one social encounter followed by 5 rather deadly combat encounters...
06:33:47 <Steven> racial feats give them the ability to fly.
06:33:57 <Avatar> true dat
06:34:08 <Avatar> do you remember what you thought austin buggered up when he ran it?
06:35:16 <Avatar> +2 dex/int -2 CON?!
06:35:26 <Avatar> how is this not an all-round dealbreaker
06:35:38 <Avatar> it screams suicidal wizard at best
06:35:41 <Mekkis> Avatar, see all the Elves around>
06:35:41 <Mekkis> ?
06:35:50 <Avatar> elves?
06:35:56 <Avatar> do they get the same
06:37:11 <Steven> yes.
06:37:23 <Avatar> why would anyone play an elf
06:37:29 <Avatar> suicidal wizard at best
06:37:53 <Avatar> I think a few of my characters that died have been elves actually
06:37:59 <Avatar> I think Mellon was an elf
06:38:02 <Avatar> Snickers is a half-elf
06:38:22 <Steven> lots of races get -2 con.
06:38:57 <Avatar> this is why humans are the best I guess
06:39:04 <Avatar> Just Another Reason
06:40:19 <Mekkis> Deceased hasn't died.
06:40:33 <Mekkis> my only character who has died was a human.
06:40:38 <Avatar> what class is he again
06:40:43 <Mekkis> Wizard
06:40:56 <Avatar> it's kind of an ironic name I guess
06:41:41 <Avatar> I think I'm going to trade away this sylph
06:41:55 <Mekkis> I'll give you a Masterful Forgery for it
06:41:59 <Avatar> I picked up another ifrit as well that I need to get rid of again
06:42:04 <Avatar> forget your forgeries
06:42:16 <Avatar> otherwise we might get a ruling that ban more online things

06:42:30 <***> Playback Complete.
06:42:33 <Avatar> we might get a ruling that bans more things from the 21st century
06:43:09 <Mekkis> Avatar, I've been running things online before they were allowed. So were you.
06:43:24 <Avatar> they were never disallowed
06:43:39 <Avatar> but it's only a matter of time aye
06:43:54 <Mekkis> also, I always offer to send chronicle sheets for online games via post.
06:44:03 <Avatar> someone will just have to ask "can we play online?" and FAQ it
06:44:19 <Avatar> mate if you want to live in the 19th century that's your biz
06:44:45 <Avatar> maybe I will email lisa stevens
06:45:02 <Mekkis> Maybe you should send her a letter.
06:45:12 <Avatar> that's your biz
06:45:14 <Mekkis> :)
06:45:31 <Mekkis> how else are you supposed to get a signed chronicle sheet.
06:45:32 <Mekkis> hmm
06:45:37 <Avatar> obviously the chain of command at paizo really isn't working
06:45:49 <Mekkis> Next time I issue chronicle sheets, I'll sign it with my PGP key :P
06:46:44 <Steven> alright... crazy character theory time.
06:47:45 <Avatar> suicidal sylph wizard
06:52:00 <Mekkis> Steven, a character who can calculate the inverse logarithms over a finite domain
06:53:21 <Avatar> some of the alternate racial traits for sylphs actually seem pretty cool
06:53:53 <Avatar> though I'm not sure what bozo thought replacing electricity resistance 5 for sonic resistance 5 would ever be a worthy investment
06:54:04 <Mekkis> how about a Block Ciphermage
06:54:28 <Avatar> I don't know what that is
06:55:00 <Mekkis> In cryptography, a block cipher is a deterministic algorithm operating on fixed-length groups of bits, called blocks, with an unvarying transformation that is specified by a symmetric key.

07:07:35 <Steven> yeah or i could make a hydrogeologist character, know what im talking about, and bore the table until they fall asleep. The only difference between our character concepts is that i'd have a better grasp of what i am talking about.
07:07:57 <Steven> oooooooooooo.... or maybe i like kittens.
07:07:57 <s_gmusic> Well this could get interesting..
07:07:59 <s_gmusic> http://paizo.com/paizo/news/v5748eaic9sv6?New-Core-Campaign-Announced-forPathfinder
07:10:01 <Yiroep> Mmhmm.
07:10:06 <Yiroep> Excited for it.
07:10:12 <Yiroep> Although scheduling will be tougher..
07:12:46 <Mekkis> Steven, not really. My diceless character likes talking about cryptography and block ciphers. It makes them confused.
07:13:50 <Steven> So you've played with nicer people who havent told you to your face how boring that shit is.
07:13:54 <s_gmusic> I think the biggest thing is that it allows you to reply a scenario for credit, followed by the option to expand from a Core character to standard.
07:13:56 <Steven> cool.
07:14:19 <s_gmusic> http://paizo.com/paizo/blog/v5748dyo5lh0h?Introducing-the-Core-Campaign#discuss
07:14:27 <Mekkis> Confusion Curse (Ex): The shaman's command of lore can cause weaker minds to become mired in confusion.
07:15:01 <s_gmusic> "Race boons found on Chronicle sheets may not be used in the Core Campaign." makes sense
07:15:17 <Mekkis> The shaman chooses a single intelligent target within 30 feet. That creature must succeed at a Will saving throw or become confused for a number of rounds equal to the shaman's Charisma modifier (minimum 1).
07:16:24 <s_gmusic> no mixed groups.
07:22:31 <s_gmusic> I don't see a comment about it, but perhaps I'm misreading it: Would a GM get credit for running a scenario both ways?
07:27:08 <s_gmusic> and someone just asked, from Brock "You receive a Core Chrinicle if you GM a core game. You receive an existing mode chronicle if you GM an existing mode game. If you place an existing GM credit chronicle on a core character, it then defaults to existing mode character and is no longer a core character. "
07:41:17 <Yiroep> Hrm.
07:41:22 <Yiroep> Not sure how I feel about that.
07:41:52 <Yiroep> I like GM rewards being completely separate from what is run, like it is right now with subtiers.
07:53:15 <s_gmusic> it should still be, Yiroep. that just says you get a GM cert for GM'ing both versions of PFS (so you can GM the same thing twice for credit). the restriction is if you put a regular GM cert on a Core character, that character is no longer "Core"
08:08:58 Yiroep has quit (EOF from client)
08:29:24 <Avatar> I don't understand how it is any different to what we have now
08:29:33 <Avatar> what's stopping you just making a character with core options as it is
08:41:40 <steven> oh thank god they finally unveiled it.
08:48:25 <steven> So I have my core only character built. Anybody up for a game?
08:48:36 <steven> lol
08:55:31 <Avatar> why couldn't you do this before
08:55:50 <Avatar> is replay the only advantage of playing it
08:59:47 <steven> i guess it could be seen that way.
09:00:36 <steven> The reason i didnt want to make a core only character was then I basically have a Core Campaign character that is not allowed to play Core Campaign because i've played non-core campaign games.
09:05:13 <mib_4zey7d> steven
09:05:31 <Steven> yup, only does it if somebody says my name.
09:05:39 <Steven> That is not a bad thing though.
09:06:51 <Avatar> that's how most people have it set up anyway
09:10:37 <Avatar> what other way can it be seen, I don't understand?
09:11:17 <Avatar> for people who don't want to see an oracle or summoner or bloodrager at tables?
09:12:26 <steven> the other advantage is sitting down to play with your friend you just got into the game.
09:13:19 <steven> so like me if i wanted to play a game with my brother mike, It would be shitty because i'd have to hand him a level 7 pregen.
09:13:50 <steven> Playing a level 7 pregen sucks if it is your first game.
09:14:42 <steven> It just makes it easier to play for people like me who have played a ton of stuff.
09:15:06 <steven> while also letting newer players not be overwhelmed by the choices available
09:15:17 <Avatar> that is the same advantage
09:16:35 <steven> and newer GMs should have an easier time GMing because they dont have to know Core, UC, UM, APG and whatever else some crazy guy brings to the table.
09:18:53 <Avatar> some crazy guy being you
09:19:13 <Avatar> how much info did you give away with the gong
09:19:23 <Avatar> re too hard or too soft
09:19:26 <Avatar> I am rethinking making an investigator, I just can't see how they are ever useful in combat where every character really needs some special trick up their sleeve
09:19:48 <Avatar> striking it properly involves some weird mechanics that I don't think anyone will figure out on their own by accident
09:21:07 <steven> yeah, investigator is more of a homebrew thing in my opinion.
09:21:16 Gamera ([email protected]) has joined #d&d
09:23:21 <Avatar> shame
09:23:44 * steven shrugs
09:23:56 <steven> not every class is a winner.
09:24:08 <Avatar> the potential, though
09:38:15 <Steven> we modify the hell out of that encounter as well.
09:39:02 <Steven> so the dude stands up and does his little speech
09:39:22 <Steven> roll initiative as whirling blades of doom start up
09:39:55 <Steven> and on his turn we just have him bullrush somebody into the whirling blades
09:40:45 <Steven> as we explain the gore explosion that happens
09:41:31 <Steven> we slide a note to the person who got bullrushed explaining they are trapped in a little room and that the blades were illusionary
09:41:38 <steven> I feel ya man. I had a build that given 10 minutes of looking at somebody i could do a shit ton of damage. It just doesn't fit exceptionally well in PFS
09:43:06 <Steven> I didnt even roll for it, i was just like 53 to bullrush you... you are flung into the blades-o-death
09:45:26 <Steven> the table was just like... what the fuck!?! I'll BoL his corpse! and i was like which chunk would you like to breath of life? The guy who I did it to played it so perfectly, he was like I hate this fucking game. Stupid fucking mechanics... just kill a person.
09:46:14 <Steven> and then once the fight was over, the blades dissolved and the door slid open he burst out laughing.
10:31:33 <Steven> i am currently bored.

21:38:22 <Avatar> does anyone remember off the top of your head when you apply later-level credit
21:38:37 <Avatar> is it when you hit the level of the pregen, or when you hit the level of the lowest subtier?
21:41:01 <Brunius> level of the pregen isn't it
21:44:37 <Avatar> yep
21:44:38 <Avatar> cheers
21:52:57 <Avatar> my wizard somehow hit level 4 without me noticing
21:53:14 <Brunius> GM credit, or just the middle of a con?
21:55:27 <Avatar> I just applied the blood under absalom credit to the character and it was already level 4
21:55:35 <Avatar> it has a scenario on it that I thought I hadn't played
22:13:14 <Avatar> oh look at this mekkis, my wizard actually has a focus listed in his inventory on his character sheet
22:13:36 <Avatar> I actually created a section so I would remember to add additional foci to it
22:13:44 <Avatar> I dont' even remember doing this!
22:14:21 <Avatar> the character has bought almost nothing, just some wrist sheathes, a wand, a haversack and a foci
22:26:31 <s_gmusic> wut
22:42:47 <Mekkis> moin
22:45:31 <s_gmusic> hi mekkis
22:45:49 <s_gmusic> so what was that thing about Limited Wish into Simulacrum?
22:49:16 <Mekkis> oh. Happened in Waking Rune somewhere. Campaign Leadership ruled it as legit
22:53:51 <s_gmusic> haven't been to the forums for a while, so I haven't heard anything like that.
22:54:47 <s_gmusic> also been trying to not break a friend's Runelords game, so struggling to balance my character for it. >.>
22:59:58 <Mekkis> oh. Then Don't do that
23:01:33 <s_gmusic> heh
23:01:53 <s_gmusic> my character is currently a Human w/ Dual Talent. TWF Ranger 2/Samurai (Ronin) 5 who can stealth and somewhat act as face.
23:02:19 <s_gmusic> wears Mithral Mountain Pattern and TWF a +1 Katana/Wakizashi.
23:02:58 <s_gmusic> I think he said we have one big encounter left in Book 2.
23:03:28 <s_gmusic> I will admit, though, I drop mooks like flies, but have some issue hitting bosses.
23:06:39 <Mekkis> We just found ways of avoiding most of the mooks
23:07:41 <s_gmusic> we could, but it often becomes a "sic'em" fight and I go to town.
23:09:43 <s_gmusic> it's kinda nice since I already have Step Up and Strike and Improved TWF. not sure what to get next.

23:20:08 <Mekkis> !spell soften earth
23:20:15 <diebot> Mekkis, MOVE EARTH transmutation ([earth]) druid 6, sorcerer/wizard 6 see text Range: long (400 ft. + 40 ft./level) Comp: V, S, M (clay, loam, sand, and an iron blade) Duration: instantaneous Save: none SR:noSource: PFRPG Core
23:20:16 <diebot> Move earth moves dirt (clay, loam, sand, and soil), possibly collapsing embankments, moving hillocks, shifting dunes, and so forth. In no event can rock formations be collapsed or moved. The area to be affected determines the casting time. For every 150- foot square (up to 10 feet deep), casting takes 10 minutes. The maximum area, 750 feet by 750
23:20:16 <diebot> feet, takes 4 hours and 10 minutes to move. This spell does not violently break the surface of the ground. Instead, it creates wavelike crests and troughs, with the earth reacting with glacial fluidity until the desired result is achieved. Trees, structures, rock formations, and such are mostly unaffected except for changes in elevation and
23:20:16 <diebot> relative topography. The spell cannot be used for tunneling and is generally too slow to trap or bury creatures. Its primary use is for digging or filling moats or for adjusting terrain contours before a battle. This spell has no effect on earth creatures.
