00:09:55 <kiska> Ampera: And here I thought that our politicians are bad... *cough*vaccine rollout blunder*cough*
00:10:43 <Ampera> I mean our governor is currently under investigation for supposedly sexually assaulting a load of female staffers
00:11:29 <Ampera> NY's state legislature is also a single party government, as one party has a supermajority in both upper and lower houses

00:19:49 <steve30> Halcyon, AC men are here
00:20:19 <Ampera> now if only you had the DC men there, then it'd be a rocking good time
00:21:04 <kiska> Ampera: I mean... the Coalition(Liberal + National parties) are under investigation here as well :D
00:21:33 <Ampera> No they always are, but that's usually because someone thinks someone else is a nazi
00:22:01 <Ampera> Not that I really know, I can only form opinions from what I'm fed from DW
00:22:09 <Ampera> as that's the main means I keep up with what's going on over there
00:23:21 <kiska> Not sure what DW is so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
00:23:25 <Ampera> Deutsche Welle
00:23:54 <kiska> I see so sort of like our ABC
00:24:01 <Ampera> I thought you were German
00:24:04 <kiska> as in the Australian Broadcasting Corp
00:24:06 <Ampera> why did I think you were German
00:24:18 <kiska> ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
00:24:26 <kiska> Because of the time zone?
00:24:53 <Ampera> nah, it was just confusion, as it seemed like you were implying being german at the HH:09:55 message you sent
00:25:20 <Ampera> The only thing I hear about Australia is stuff that makes it on the world news here
00:25:21 <kiska> Oh :D
00:25:45 <Ampera> like troops being deployed to Sydney to deal with anyone who coughs too loudly
00:25:49 <kiska> Well would you like to know that NSW one of the biggest states is in lockdown?
00:25:55 <Ampera> I'm aware of that
00:26:06 <Ampera> because if you guys let COVID spread now, you'd be proper fucked
00:26:28 <kiska> One of the main causes is the... very slow vaccine rollout
00:26:58 <Ampera> We might have had a fast vaccine rollout, but it came at the cost of us having one of the biggest money burning parties since WW2
00:27:15 <Ampera> and most of it went to big pharma :P
00:27:37 <kiska> Yep meanwhile we kinda relied on AZ which turned out to not be a good bet

01:50:09 <DHess_US> ripple current rating will be the primary limitation as with a resonate half bridge.
01:50:21 <DHess_US> Same with SEPIC.
01:50:37 <T3sl4> typically it's PP or PE, big enough so that ripple voltage is under say 10%, and ripple current rating is sufficient
01:51:01 <arch> oh, apparently that dc blocking capacitor can be skipped for current mode controllers
01:51:30 <DHess_US> I've repaired a few off-line half bridges which used aluminum electrolytics, and that was the capacitor which failed.

02:43:26 <T3sl4> yep
02:44:16 <T3sl4> i'm concerned about the statement of fact, it doesn't seem to say it's a court finding
02:44:45 <T3sl4> but i'm not sure what processes an AG can use to make similar findings, maybe it was done in court idk
02:44:45 <Ampera> No it was an AG investigation, presumably running up to a court case
02:45:27 <Ampera> probably helps to have some good evidence and a thorough investigation before starting charges.
02:46:13 <Ampera> Ultimately, Cuomo is innocent until he is proven guilty, but there is more than just one reason to not like the guy.
02:46:57 Join: coppice ([email protected]) to #EEVblog
02:47:12 <Ampera> I wouldn't be surprised if he did everything he's being accused of and more, but I also wouldn't be surprised if the NY Democrats only care because they don't like Cuomo either and want him gone
02:47:34 <Ampera> for the longest time, he was the one guy who stood in front of the Democrats, right up until they got a supermajority in both houses
02:48:21 <T3sl4> it sounds like there still needs to be a case with him as defendant directly, but that it should be pretty open and shut given the evidence here
02:49:14 <Ampera> Any move like this is politically risky for those involved. Not only are you basically backstabbing your own governor, you're also pouring a guy's skeletons out of his closet, something that a lot of politicians wouldn't fare too well with, if the same were done to them
02:50:52 <coppice> A scumbag like Cuomo didn't act alone. There will be lots of powerful people who don't want to end up exposed with him
02:50:53 <Ampera> It'll at the very least, make for some quite interesting news to read.
02:50:59 <T3sl4> ah, there's a state law prescribing such procedure. though, it also says "with approval/under direction of the governor", which, did he really sign off on this? seems like an odd case of self interest
02:51:14 <Ampera> coppice, of course, the article even says most of his senior staff were responsible for covering most of it up.
02:51:44 <coppice> covering up is after the fact. The real skeletons are in the original acts
02:53:01 <Ampera> My best guess is Cuomo loses 2022, and then has enough friends and clout to stave off any real charges until he's either very old, or dead.

04:06:30 <Kuschelpony> arch, take the UC3825
04:07:24 <Kuschelpony> the SG could be tricked into current mode with an external comparator, but i am surethats not really goods if there are already better chips around
04:07:39 <T3sl4> well, i'd just recommnd avg current mode
04:07:47 <arch> technically, all you're doing is sensing the current loop as well as the voltage loop, so is it just a matter of using the deadtime comparator of the TL494 for current sensing, since the comparator has a faster response?
04:07:57 <T3sl4> just add opamp, or the isolated 431 handles it laready

09:03:03 <Nothing\> i just thought of an interesting question
09:04:27 <Nothing\> like i was just thinking about why i prefer to read a physical book rather than read off of a computer or cell phone screen. But I was trying to figure out why and I really couldn't work out why I prefer it, other than because it's easier to get distracted on a phone or computer. But I know there's more to it.
09:05:07 <Nothing\> and that got me wondering if millenials, who have never known what it's like to live without a computer, prefer physical books or screens
09:05:55 <Nothing\> i mean, i can see the harshness of the bright screen being an issue as well, but that can be fixed very easily
09:06:32 <Nothing\> even before software like fl.ux I used to just turn the brightness and contrast down on my monitor at night to make it easier on my eyes
09:07:09 <Nothing\> though i really can't stand fl.ux
09:08:40 <Jens> It's takes some getting used to, but I couldn't live without it now.
09:10:49 <Nothing\> well this is a baffling patchnote

10:28:12 <arch> anyone got tips on how i can prevent my thin copperclad pcbs from warping when i'm tin coating them with solder?
10:28:32 <arch> if not prevent, reduce
10:28:42 <T3sl4> hot dip
10:28:54 <arch> what does that mean?
10:29:38 <T3sl4> get a bunch of attractive women into a bathtub, then toss in the board
10:29:52 <arch> lol
10:32:52 <T3sl4> just do the back side, also, just bend it back straight it's fine
10:32:57 <T3sl4> before putting components on it that is
10:34:04 <T3sl4> last time i tinned stock, i did a whole (smallish) sheet, using induction. easy enough
10:34:38 <T3sl4> an upturned E core driven with some amps and tens of volts does a fine job, and the Q is low so constant freq is suitable
10:35:39 <arch> you can induction heat copper? doesn't a metal need to be sufficiently "lossy" (eddy current?) wise in order for induction heating to work?
10:38:20 <T3sl4> 1oz is "translucent" at 30kHz or so
10:40:59 <T3sl4> 2 x 2oz you want more like 10kHz, but that's still fine with a core
10:43:35 <arch> im confused about what you mean by using an upturned E core, and using that for heating copperclads. do you mean wrap coils around the E-core center leg, and feed it 30khz, and place that above the copperclad?
10:43:49 <arch> like a miniature heat ray of doom
10:44:48 <T3sl4> ye
10:45:03 <T3sl4> it acts like a gas burner, if a bit more localized
10:45:30 <T3sl4> the freq should be low, so both layers are heated. too high and just the bottom layer is heated, and probably blisters before enough heat conducts to the top side
10:45:38 <T3sl4> then just smear solder paste over the top and gg
10:46:04 <T3sl4> or if not paste, then solderblob with ample flux, and an iron something or other (wire?) to push it around, or use the iron
10:46:30 <T3sl4> it's pretty efficient, like only takes a few amps at 15V to melt solder with a EE33 core
10:48:36 <arch> pretty neat
10:54:48 <arch> T3sl4, do you have a reference design for a small scale induction heater, which i can use for said ray of doom?
10:55:21 <T3sl4> i just threw together a half bridge with bootstrap gate driver and MOSFETs when i did that
10:55:26 <T3sl4> freq from function gen
10:55:42 <arch> ahh ok, i can do that. or use a 555 timer?
10:55:55 <arch> 555 timer with duty adjust pot
10:55:56 <T3sl4> breadboard handles those amps just fine, and you'll still need a PP cap for resonance if you go that way
10:56:01 <T3sl4> not duty, freq
10:56:07 <T3sl4> if you insist, but yes

13:29:05 <steve30> That reminds me. My ex-boyfriend's cats liked to watch me go to the toilet.
13:30:18 <Tezzers> Ex-boyfriend?
13:30:26 <Tezzers> Steve30?
13:30:28 <Tezzers> Huh.
13:30:30 <steve30> yes

13:32:10 <Halcyon> Was it because his cats are creepy?
13:32:47 <steve30> nah, they were nice and cuddly :)
13:33:01 <Halcyon> Unlike him?
13:33:15 <steve30> he was actually quite cuddly too
13:35:01 <steve30> I think I'll go back to bed
13:36:24 <Halcyon> I need to clean my office
13:36:29 <Halcyon> I have a video conference tomorrow
13:37:10 <Tezzers> So I had an interview two weeks ago. Monday evening I followed up with my inside man who was part of the panel, asked him if he had any updates. He said "nothing official but you're top 3". Today he called me, asked if I'm around tomorrow morning, if I could stop by so I could meet the guys and they could show me around.
13:37:37 <Tezzers> But I haven't heard from HR, and he didn't say I was hired. So should I expect it to be like an in person interview?
13:37:56 <Tezzers> Or would you take that to mean an offer is probably imminent?
13:41:18 <+electrohead> Yes.
13:42:08 <+electrohead> I don't know, lol. Maybe give them a call?
13:42:15 <Tezzers> The former part has me unsure how to proceed. Because I've got a lot of shit on my plate at work, and they wanted to meet at 10. So if I go in at, say, 7, I'm going to be sweating my balls off and probably get a little bit dirty. Which naturally doesn't look good for an interview.
13:42:45 <Tezzers> But hte interview is also...at work. I'm interviewing with a different department so I feel like they'd understand that?
13:42:59 <Tezzers> I mean, worst case I find out tomorrow, right?
13:43:14 <+electrohead> Well they should. If being dirty is part of it, then they have to expect that lol
13:43:48 <Tezzers> "My guy" is a guy who I worked with for two years. He took a job in this other department, with a supervisor who was...in my current boss' position like 8 years ago
13:45:09 <Tezzers> I mean, over there, probably not so much. It's a different environment and they're operating in not-quite-cleanroom but clean areas. And us...well, we're working in a building that's >20yrs old, shit gets dusty and dirty and the air conditioning doesn't keep up with the summer weather, so y'know 80F+ at 60%+ humidity isn't unheard of there
13:45:13 <+electrohead> If it's a corporate job, get ready to start sucking dick? lmfao
13:45:29 <Halcyon> Someone say dick?
13:45:36 <+electrohead> Lol
13:45:37 <Tezzers> owo
13:45:54 <Tezzers> It's not corporate. It's still research. Still an electronics tech.
13:46:03 <+electrohead> I thought it would catch steve30's attention as well
13:46:07 <+electrohead> Ampera's, too
13:46:09 <+electrohead> Lol
13:46:13 <Halcyon> :P
13:46:29 <+electrohead> Tezzers: Ahh ok :p
13:46:59 <+electrohead> If you don't find out tomorrow, start asking questions?
13:47:11 <+electrohead> That said though, my ass is heading to bed
13:47:18 <+electrohead> falling asleep at my laptop, here
13:47:41 <Tezzers> I'll just be working on...an electron accelerator in the "support" group, responsible for keeping the whole machine running, as opposed to the heavy ion collider detector I work at now, where we're a "user" of the accelerator.
13:48:05 <Tezzers> So completely different technologies, different environments, different corporate structure and all. Different tasks, different everything.
13:48:11 <Tezzers> But on the same campus
13:48:17 <+electrohead> Oooo, ok ok, you have my attention now
13:48:42 <+electrohead> Where do you live?
13:48:57 <Tezzers> Somewhere along the France-Italy-Switzerland border
13:49:05 <+electrohead> Yeah fair enough
13:49:10 <Tezzers> But on the screaming eagle and gun shooting side
13:49:21 <+electrohead> That is fucking awesome, though - I mean, you're job

13:50:48 <+electrohead> You don't live too far away from me, then
13:51:05 <Halcyon> I wish you didn't live too far away from me :(
13:51:07 <Tezzers> Didn't....c4757p and ktemkin live up in upstate NY? They got a lot of trans folk up there...must be something in the water...

13:51:23 <Tezzers> electrohead : I've seen your cablevision host :P
13:51:36 <+electrohead> what do you mean?
13:52:10 <Tezzers> Hmmm....maybe it was someone else
13:52:24 <+electrohead> I'm confused, now :p
13:52:31 <Tezzers> Or maybe afternet didn't do hostmasks way back when
13:52:39 <+electrohead> and - "must be something in the water" - LOL

13:53:08 <+electrohead> ahh, yeah that's not me, at all
13:53:22 <Halcyon> electrohead is all fancy and has Starlink
13:53:24 <+electrohead> my primary internet connection is comcast, secondary is starlink
13:53:38 <Tezzers> The two shittiest services you can pick?
13:53:43 <Tezzers> Comcast, and satellite internet?
13:53:52 <Halcyon> What's wrong with Starlink? It's pretty awesome.
13:53:53 <+electrohead> but, I don't ever connect to IRC from my home IP addresses/hosts
13:54:13 <+electrohead> Tezzers: in this area where I live, verizon sucks ass
13:54:19 <+electrohead> No fiber availability
13:54:31 <+electrohead> ADSL is the most you can get with them
13:54:36 <Tezzers> We've got FiOS here.
13:54:45 <+electrohead> Rub it in, rub it in.
13:54:47 <Tezzers> A lot of people jumped ship from Cablevision to FiOS.
13:54:54 <Tezzers> Most of them ended up crawling back to Cablevision
13:55:12 <Tezzers> FiOS has absolute shit customer service, worse than Cablevision somehow, apparently.
13:55:23 <Tezzers> And shitty TV selection/lineup or something too
13:55:28 <+electrohead> Most ISP's are about the same, for support
13:55:58 <Tezzers> Cablevision *used to* give you good discounts if you threatened to quit and switch to FiOS, for like 5 years when FiOS first rolled out.
13:56:09 <+electrohead> Not to mention, I get forced to rub comcast's nipples from time to time
13:56:28 <Tezzers> But when people went to FiOS and went back to Cable, and it was just widely known that people went back, Cable started letting people cancel and refused to give discounts
13:56:29 <+electrohead> Heh, comcast gave up trying to retain people a good half of the time

13:58:11 <Tezzers> Y'know, I got sick two days after we got a smart meter
13:58:22 <Tezzers> I'm 100% certain the smart meter caused my illness
13:58:29 <Halcyon> :P
13:58:38 <Halcyon> Or did the smart meter CURE your sickness? :P
13:58:49 <Tezzers> It took a few days to realize that was the cause...but I got my father to wrap it in aluminized kapton and I've been fine ever since
13:59:44 <+electrohead> o.O
13:59:52 <Halcyon> I think he's trolling us :P
14:00:06 <Halcyon> But yeh, I would imagine the power companies see some crazy shit from time to time
14:01:02 <Tezzers> Yeah, the meter reader came by and swapped our meter last week :P
14:01:03 <+electrohead> Speaking of, I have a 'smart' power meter hanging out in my lab
14:01:22 <+electrohead> Bought it for the hell of it, thanks to ebay
14:01:27 <Tezzers> How'd you get your hands on that? You THIEF
14:01:42 <Halcyon> I got mine swapped out a while ago. I want to switch over to time-of-use tariff
14:01:44 <+electrohead> Read the above message :P
14:01:58 <+electrohead> Ebay is a very nice thing.
14:02:32 <Tezzers> Oh, I missed that second line :P
14:03:17 <Halcyon> Big clive has done some teardowns on meters
14:05:41 <+electrohead> https://0xznc01.pw:2600/public/IMG_20210804_000415.jpg
14:05:43 <+electrohead> Ta-da.
14:06:11 <Halcyon> Have you taken it apart yet?
14:06:17 <+electrohead> Fuck yes I have :P
14:06:21 <Halcyon> Anything good?
14:06:31 <Halcyon> Oh cool, it does Zigbee
14:06:34 <Halcyon> That's neat
14:06:43 <Tezzers> He doesn't know, he blew the load with that tamper switch on the front
14:06:58 <Halcyon> Our ones are boring cellular
14:08:48 <+electrohead> Lol, yeah it's pretty nifty. Eventually I want to document all IC's, and dump any remnants of memory, see if I can find anything interesting
14:11:41 <+electrohead> And in the long run, I may have a go at deciphering/decrypting the local communications for my actual power meter on my building
14:12:00 <+electrohead> Would like to figure that out, along with the water meter as well
14:12:10 <Tezzers> Water meter...
14:12:18 <Tezzers> I wonder if ours is upgraded
14:12:37 <Tezzers> Our gas meter is still old school analog
14:12:42 <+electrohead> I still see the gas utility guys walking around manually, looking
14:12:48 <+electrohead> lol
14:13:08 <Tezzers> Our water meter is in the front lawn in a hand hole
14:13:24 <+electrohead> Heh
14:13:25 <Tezzers> But a lot of houses have an interior water meter so I wouldn't be surprised if they go around putting in cellulars
14:14:08 <EEVBot> [Twitter] - eevblog - Nice new plugin available for browsers that alerts you if creators have the same videos on other platforms:… https://t.co/1IYHyVih47
14:14:14 <Halcyon> It makes sense. Sending a person around to manual read meters is such a thing of the past
14:14:21 <Halcyon> It's also prone to errors
14:14:22 <Tezzers> Not just that
14:14:28 <Tezzers> But read meters *inside homes*
14:14:32 <+electrohead> There's an interface box mounted outside, and from the very slight research I have done so far, the water company drives around with a piece of equipment, and they send out a packet of data, meter replies, and that's that.
14:14:37 <Halcyon> All of ours are outside
14:15:02 <Tezzers> It varies by district here. Some allow interior water meters
14:15:31 <+electrohead> So, I would have to go look at FCC documents for the rough frequency that's used, then tune to that on one of my SDR receivers, and keep it on 24/7 with some sort of alarm to notify me
14:15:41 <Tezzers> That of course limits the length of pipe the homeowner is responsible for between the meter and the street...so it's beneficial to the homeowner
14:15:50 <Tezzers> If it leaks in the lawn it belongs to the water company
14:15:51 <Halcyon> YAY, exported 9.6kWh and imported 8.4 so far today
14:15:57 <Halcyon> Not bad for winter
14:16:05 <+electrohead> Damn, not at all
14:16:07 <+electrohead> :P
14:16:20 <Halcyon> That's excess. Total PV generated is 21.2 kWh
14:16:31 <+electrohead> Ahh
14:16:46 <Halcyon> Total consumption is 20 kWh
14:18:29 * electrohead consumes Halcyon
14:18:56 <Halcyon> I could respond with something about a massive load, but I won't :P

23:13:29 <Jens> nth worst/best doesn't really say anything. By definition someone has to be worst and best.
