I fell for that once as well. an open collector is either high impedance or forced to ground. afaik every comparator works the way that if Vin+ is the higher potential it goes up, if Vin- is the higher potential it goes low. since its open collector it "can't" go high, it just can go high impedance, which would be high either way since you pullupped the thing.
