03:16:19 <arch> guys, what do you call that carrying strap that you find on heavy lab equipment, like lab PSUs and old analog oscilloscopes? the straps bolted into the chassis that allow you to carry the thing around
03:16:45 <arch> just putting "carrying strap" into ebay search gets me bullshit lanyarded garbage
03:20:09 <rust_collector> handle?
03:20:54 <arch> not a handle. it's got a leather strap that you carry it by, but it's bolted into the chassis with metal covers at the end
03:21:39 <arch> https://albanyobjects.blob.core.windows.net/productimages/19432/83864882/72c65604-9a82-4e80-bb64-842cfa80ee85.jpg
03:21:41 <arch> like that
03:22:24 <arch> strap at the top https://i.pinimg.com/originals/52/17/d3/5217d39ab3b132781fc8d3f5711dd5f6.jpg
03:22:32 <arch> see it's screwed into the case itself
03:23:00 <rust_collector> yes. I still call that a handle. maybe you have to find the interior door "not handle" from a 1982 chevrolet
03:26:18 <rust_collector> https://www.ebay.com/itm/Spare-Carry-Handle-Grip-16cm-Length-for-Suitcase-Luggage-Case-Replacement/373433787224?hash=item56f2636358:g:-s4AAOSw6P1gB5O1
03:27:26 <arch> meh, that doesn't look as good as the "handle" on my psu, but whatever. it'll get the job done
03:28:14 <rust_collector> well, I am not suggesting that you buy exactly that one.
03:28:57 <rust_collector> but at least it is a thing that exists. cut one from an old belt, or something?

05:09:53 <T3sl4> heh
05:13:24 <hsn> Hey mr rust
05:13:33 <hsn> Happy weekend to u
05:13:38 <hsn> Next weekend
05:14:08 <rust_collector> are you going on vacation?
05:14:13 <hsn> Nah
05:14:22 <hsn> Friday is weekend
05:14:36 <rust_collector> oh well. you should go on an adventure
05:14:48 <hsn> I just came from adventure
05:15:01 <rust_collector> you have time for one more
05:15:20 <rust_collector> so, what did you do, except filming cats?
05:15:25 <hsn> Or i need to understand the comparator output
05:15:43 <rust_collector> NOOOOO!!!!!
05:15:51 <rust_collector> never comparator
05:16:56 <hsn> No
05:17:01 <hsn> Let me explain
05:17:54 <hsn> https://photos.app.goo.gl/PHUoDzfZ6rYLGiGj7
05:18:26 <hsn> There is minumum output sink
05:18:29 <hsn> 6mA
05:18:40 <hsn> And it doesnt make sense to me
05:20:12 <rust_collector> meh. this is why I have my job.
05:20:54 <hsn> Do u want to ve comparesta?
05:21:06 <hsn> To be
05:21:18 <rust_collector> no
05:21:54 <rust_collector> I think having a braindead job is good. then I can just do it, and not think about it
05:23:14 <hsn> How much a Brain cost
05:23:52 <rust_collector> they are free, but you have to pay extra, if you want it installed, after you leave the hospital
05:24:31 <rust_collector> so order your kids with one, because you can not afford to get them one later
05:25:37 <hsn> I have no kids yet
05:25:54 <rust_collector> that is why I mention it now
05:26:04 <hsn> Maybe they went grabbing brains
05:26:25 <rust_collector> they are little zombies
05:27:54 <hsn> Zombies eat brains
05:28:03 <rust_collector> yes
05:28:22 <hsn> My kids just grab

05:40:13 <rust_collector> NO NO NO! go grill some meat on a stick, and watch the sea

05:43:51 <hsn> I like
05:43:52 <hsn> But
05:43:55 <hsn> Its cold
05:44:00 <rust_collector> no, it is not
05:44:25 <rust_collector> I don't even think your fridge is cold
05:45:26 <rust_collector> after you put on your borat suit, and get the grill fired up....
05:49:31 <rust_collector> I am tinkering with my extra crappy power supply. it does sort of work well enough. I should just mount the meter, and put the lid on. I can try other things on a different one
05:50:11 <rust_collector> this one was more or less a test of what I could do with just junk
05:51:58 <rust_collector> and, the result is a box full of junk. I guess that makes sense

13:03:04 <MrMobodies> On the normal coffee machines
13:03:09 <MrMobodies> where they have the paper filter
13:03:31 <MrMobodies> about how long does it any of you to clean it out?
13:04:02 <MrMobodies> That's one thing that put me off, some of them these edges that stick out where the paper filter goes ontop
13:04:21 <MrMobodies> and I find it hard to clean them especially when door can't come off
13:04:36 <MrMobodies> but this one has a built in filter under the blade in the casket
13:04:54 <MrMobodies> I just take it out and put it under a hot tap and in doesn't very long
13:05:07 <MrMobodies> only about 5 10 seconds and all the coffee grains come out
13:05:33 <MrMobodies> and hardly any mess where the pot is
13:05:45 <MrMobodies> best coffee machine I ever had
13:05:56 <T3sl4> MrMobodies, usually it just pulls out whole, and there's no mess?
13:06:06 <MrMobodies> yes
13:06:11 <MrMobodies> the round thing in the back
13:06:19 <T3sl4> you can rinse it if you don't like coffee stains in the filter, but it's probably not going to go like rotten if you're using it regularly, hot water and all that
13:06:23 <MrMobodies> it does drip so I have a tissue
13:07:15 <MrMobodies> well actually they come out really good
13:07:22 <MrMobodies> I never had a problem with grains getting stuck
13:07:25 <MrMobodies> https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/nFsAAOSwuklf4nbg/s-l1600.jpg
13:07:32 <MrMobodies> it is the round thing on the top left
13:07:41 <T3sl4> oh, you mean it's got like a mesh basket thingy and it just rinses out, no filter paper?
13:07:45 <MrMobodies> yes
13:07:45 <T3sl4> yeah, that's handy
13:07:49 <MrMobodies> a lifetime filter
13:08:05 <T3sl4> still, elephant in the room is it's drip
13:08:27 <MrMobodies> it's not slow
13:08:33 <MrMobodies> for the amount it does
13:08:37 <T3sl4> the problem is it's shite :P
13:08:52 <MrMobodies> shite?
13:09:01 <T3sl4> dad got a new coffee machine lately, that seems to do pretty well, it's something like controlled temp and dose or something, i don't remember what model unfortunately
13:09:12 <T3sl4> but it was the first good cup of coffee i've had from their house ever
13:09:23 <MrMobodies> it's not the pod thing is it?
13:09:27 <T3sl4> nah
13:09:29 <MrMobodies> where the pods go in
13:09:30 <MrMobodies> oh
13:09:42 <MrMobodies> I just want something that is easy to clean and I'm happy
13:09:49 <MrMobodies> with a built in blender
13:09:58 <T3sl4> he also got into the hipster roast-your-own stuff too, which i don't know how much that actually affects things, but some combination of things seems to be helping
13:10:09 <MrMobodies> oh that's nice
13:10:41 <T3sl4> i literally grew up thinking coffee was this bland bitter disgusting brown fluid, because that's all they ever made, weak drip that sucked
13:11:02 <MrMobodies> I see
13:11:10 <T3sl4> eventually i had espresso and such, actually good coffee
13:11:23 <MrMobodies> I have come across some cheap coffees before that gave me headaches
13:11:30 <MrMobodies> oh yes
13:11:37 <MrMobodies> nice tasting stuff
13:11:55 <T3sl4> tbh even the instant coffee, the kind in sealed metallized packets, is pretty good
13:12:21 <T3sl4> that's what i do, i don't make like a pot a day, just a cup when i want some, i figure that's a better deal than having to manage a machine
13:12:39 <MrMobodies> well I only use it when there are more than 3 people
13:12:41 <MrMobodies> when I have guests
13:12:52 <MrMobodies> and I brought it work and they loved it
13:12:58 <MrMobodies> I brought proper beans
13:13:04 <MrMobodies> and it groudned it
13:13:10 <MrMobodies> and it was very hot
13:13:19 <T3sl4> ah
13:13:21 <MrMobodies> not warm like some other ones before that
13:13:44 <MrMobodies> I think that one was built in 1985 and they had a MyCafe variant in the US
13:14:06 <MrMobodies> the hotplate isn't great I think was 500w
13:14:20 <MrMobodies> but the coffee seems to come out very hot which is what I want
13:46:50 <arch> i feel like im ready to start tinkering with UC3843 loop compensation. it is sort of mind boggling (looking at the appnote), but i think i can do it. i've decided to start simple--1-to-1 ratio coupled inductor (for flyback); 10-15V in, 12V 1A in CCM mode.
13:47:04 <arch> 12V 1A output*
13:47:32 <arch> and my questions is, is my inductor choice sufficient
13:47:49 <T3sl4> so you're doing slope compensation already?
13:49:29 <arch> no, i want to do that
13:49:34 <arch> i have to do that obv
13:49:44 <arch> cuz it's gonna be operating above 50% duty
13:50:01 <arch> hold on lemme show what i'm planning
13:51:07 <T3sl4> not 50% duty
13:51:08 <T3sl4> CCM
13:51:13 <arch> https://imgur.com/a/Ve0Zfzq
13:52:00 <arch> im wondering if that inductor is capable. i mean, input current is for sure less than 3.02A rms
13:52:18 <arch> although the peak hits above the recommended irms
13:53:30 <arch> 2.8us/5us, slightly above 50% duty
13:53:38 <T3sl4> peak is not rms
13:53:47 <T3sl4> duty doesn't matter, CCM matters
13:54:26 <arch> i understand that, but im confused about the slope comp. they say if the duty cycle is above 50%, you need it, or you get instability
13:54:54 <T3sl4> they say 50% cuz they stoop
13:56:42 <arch> oo. well, idk about that becuz i'm stoopid myself. but anyways, for now, i was wondering if that SRF1280-10uH is underspecced
13:56:53 <arch> or if it should be just barely ok
13:57:04 <T3sl4> it's about 2-3x overspec
13:58:54 <arch> awesome, so i have all parts to built it
13:59:38 <arch> o right, also need to order some 2.2uH and 4.7uH coupled inductors to revise that other fly-buck conv i made a few weeks ago
14:02:59 <arch> yep, lemme draw this up real quick after im done studying
14:03:24 <T3sl4> studly-ing
14:04:28 <arch> everyday im shuff- i mean studying
14:05:02 <arch> such is life for tinkerers and engineers...feelsgoodman
14:07:24 <arch> does it matter much if i put the dotted end of the inductor at the switch node (primary side) or diode (secondary side) if the inductor is shielded? i know you wrote an article about that before, but you used an unshielded inductor then
14:07:56 <T3sl4> doesn't matter as long as P/S are consistent
14:07:56 <arch> cuz the way they are winded is the non-dotted side has the wire coming over the top of the whole coil, so that side tends to be slightly noisier
14:08:35 <arch> yah, thank goodness i learned my lesson from burning out a small flyback trafo after getting the phasing wrong
14:09:15 <T3sl4> or not
14:09:25 <T3sl4> the innermost wire couples to the core
14:09:34 <T3sl4> better way to put it, it depends
14:10:14 <arch> probably doesn't matter to copperclad builds since we don't really care about meeting EMI emission limits and whatnot

19:21:06 <Kuschelpony> but to say this, this sumemr i will have my new horse suit to show you
19:22:36 * steve30 wonders what a horse suit does
19:25:59 <Kuschelpony> well, think about it like a tool that transforms me from a human into a realistic (two legged) horse
19:26:15 <Kuschelpony> and no electronics inside this time
19:27:40 <steve30> two legged horse? That sounds wierd
19:29:18 <Kuschelpony> think like this one https://www.furaffinity.net/view/36780667/
19:30:23 <Kuschelpony> hmm, i wonder how much things are all wrong with this CM108 based USB soundcard
19:30:24 <steve30> ah
19:30:52 <Kuschelpony> i know it has messed up decoupling giving lots of noise (that can be probably salved with some surgery)
19:31:06 <Kuschelpony> but why does it start clipping at -8db fullscale?
19:32:18 <Kuschelpony> as i have basically finished my speakers i now want to build amp, soundcard and USB-hub in a tiny case to be placed next to the laptop
19:33:19 <Kuschelpony> seems i should buy at least one more of these cr.. cheap things to make an reverse engineering as far as i can trace it around the expoxy blob
19:36:01 <Halcyon> Kuschelpony, are you a furry?
19:36:17 <Kuschelpony> good question...
19:36:33 <Halcyon> Not physically, I mean the subculture
19:36:45 <Kuschelpony> i think i am something 50% furry as there are also several things that i do not match, but i am certainly fursuiter
19:36:54 <Halcyon> Interesting
19:36:56 <Kuschelpony> i absolutely understand :)
19:37:53 <Kuschelpony> i prefer to call myself better as a mix of engineer and cretive wild animal with equine soul
19:39:26 <Halcyon> I am about as vanilla as you get
19:39:34 <Halcyon> I mean I have handcuffs... but those are for work
19:39:58 <steve30> of course... work...
19:40:11 <Halcyon> :P
19:40:19 <Kuschelpony> i know, just to make sure the suitcase with the expensive equipment is safely tied to both hands
19:40:44 <steve30> We know what you do at work Halcyon :p
19:40:58 <Halcyon> Yeh... you think I'm a whore :P
19:41:19 <Halcyon> Kuschelpony, nah, it's for locking up crooks
19:41:32 <Halcyon> I still occasionally do normal uniformy stuff (tomorrow for example)
19:41:44 <steve30> On that subject, the dumpster cell phone which I was using as a GPRS modem the other week, contains... things... that I cannot un-see. I wonder if I can somehow clear out its memory.
19:41:58 <Halcyon> Illegal things? Or just gross things?
19:42:34 <steve30> penis photographs
19:42:43 <Halcyon> Also, why didn't you factory reset it when you got it?
19:42:51 <Halcyon> Haha, like 90% of the phones I see at work
19:43:30 <steve30> I wasn't aware that one could factory reset it, and I only found the photos on it after faffing around with it one day. It spends most of its time in a cupboard as I don't have much use for it.
19:43:40 <Halcyon> What model is it?
19:43:48 <steve30> Nokia 6300
19:43:49 <Halcyon> Some Nokia's did come with a "format" function
19:44:13 <K> hello buns
19:44:19 <Halcyon> The old one? Or the modern touchscreeny one?
19:44:34 <K> i use nokia 6300
19:44:50 <K> it is great.
19:45:07 <steve30> https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nokia_6300
19:45:18 <K> yea
19:45:43 <steve30> I don't like the tiny buttons on it
19:45:53 <Halcyon> Try *#7780#
19:46:04 <Halcyon> That resets it, can't remember if it wipes user data
19:46:43 <steve30> ta
19:46:47 <steve30> I'll dig it out later and try
19:47:10 <Halcyon> Otherwise try *#7370#
19:47:15 <Halcyon> The default security code is 12345
19:48:47 <Halcyon> Gees, that sounds crunchy, even for an old drive: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pxA_HCdCnUE
19:49:14 <Halcyon> Oh the heads are buggered, that explains it
19:53:44 <K> something is rubbing
19:53:56 <K> maybe inside motor assy
19:54:31 <K> worn bearings, maybe?
19:55:03 <Halcyon> Looks like the first head it touching the platter
19:57:04 <Kuschelpony> if yo uever visit the Computer museum in Germany/Erlangen their engineer could tell you stories about how they brought an drum memory from Zuse back to life
19:57:16 <Halcyon> Oh neat
19:59:24 <Kuschelpony> that museum is inside the university and has a whole floor to old computers and including a room filling zuse machine working again
19:59:43 <Kuschelpony> but its a few years ago since i could visit the last time
20:08:11 <Kuschelpony> until last sunday i never expected that a 20cm wideband speaker in 30 liters could be so much fun
20:13:10 <Halcyon> Sounds a bit like our Questacon: https://www.questacon.edu.au/
20:13:38 <Halcyon> Although it's more for kids/young people
20:14:33 <K> Kuschelpony, which speaker?
20:14:41 <K> 20cm seems quite a lot for wideband
20:15:19 <Halcyon> Define wideband?
20:15:26 <Kuschelpony> http://www.spectrumaudio.de/breit/sica/sicaLP208.38.426T.html
20:15:27 <K> 20-20000
20:15:36 <Kuschelpony> something 50 to 15k
20:15:47 <Halcyon> Fair enough
20:15:50 <K> ah, it has middle cone
20:16:03 <Kuschelpony> a little too much presence that still needs to be equalized out
20:16:47 <Kuschelpony> but goes well past 10kHz with good dispersion, and i love that it has no phase shit issues so music stays very "sharp"
20:18:50 <Kuschelpony> the minus side is, you can hear so clear how sh... most modern music is
20:45:06 <Halcyon> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d3NIe1jTZMc
20:45:08 <Halcyon> I have some of these
21:11:16 Quit: Kuschelpony ([email protected]) Connection closed
21:14:50 * Ampera hugs Halcyon
21:15:44 <Halcyon> :)
21:16:11 <Halcyon> Good morning Ampera
21:24:59 <Ysjoelfir> mornings
21:25:09 * Ysjoelfir is going insane today, he promises >_>
21:34:55 * Halcyon sneezes towards Ampera
21:37:14 <K> that's a paddlin'!
21:54:35 * Ysjoelfir just went insane
21:54:40 <Ampera> Ysjoelfir, you better keep that promise, because if I find you perfectly sane tomorrow
21:54:42 <Ampera> oh good
21:54:48 <Ysjoelfir> see?
21:54:50 <Ysjoelfir> done
21:54:59 <Ampera> I apologize for ever doubting you
21:55:04 <Ysjoelfir> GRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA WHAT IS THAT STUPID BEEPING EVERY FEW SECONDS!?
21:55:05 <Ampera> welcome to the insaneperson club
21:55:10 <Ysjoelfir> thanks.
21:55:24 <Ampera> it's the sound of your impending death
21:56:27 <Ysjoelfir> some neighbors fire warning thing is beeping since yesterday evening every few seconds, and its either that half deaf old lady or the rich swiss bastard who lives under the week in this tiny 1 room apartment but hasn't been here for weeks, so neither of those will stop it >_>
21:56:37 <Ysjoelfir> this is so annoying
21:56:46 <Ampera> ahh, smoke detector
21:56:50 * Ampera hands Ysjoelfir a shotgun
21:56:52 <Ysjoelfir> yes
21:56:53 <Ampera> do what must be done
21:56:57 <Ysjoelfir> thanks
21:57:02 * Ysjoelfir shoots himself in the face
21:57:11 <Ampera> not what I meant, but that works too
21:57:23 <Ysjoelfir> \x/
21:57:55 <K> the battery is going dead there
21:58:11 <Ysjoelfir> yes. but whoever owns that just doesn't care or isn't there
21:59:19 <K> this seems like a thing you should have rules for
21:59:30 <Ysjoelfir> indeed
22:01:16 <Ampera> The rule here is if it's been going on for more than a day, you are legally /required/ to execute them
22:01:32 <Ysjoelfir> lol, that would be nice
22:02:44 <Ampera> just another reason why I do not want to ever live in an apartment
22:05:31 Join: coppice ([email protected]) to #EEVblog
22:05:45 <Ysjoelfir> if I would have a choice I wouldn't either
22:06:10 <Ampera> go live in the US :P
22:07:20 <Ysjoelfir> Or in norway. Its nearly as cheap to live as it is in the US (only costs for land/house I mean. everything else is freakishly expensive)
22:10:27 <Ampera> so you can buy an actual move in ready house for 80 grand?
22:10:36 <Ampera> and a decent sized one too?
22:11:24 <Ysjoelfir> no. You can buy some square kilometers ground with a huge house, a lake, a mountain, a barn and some utility buildings for ~400.000NOK (~40.000€)
22:11:42 <Ysjoelfir> it would be in the middle of nowhere though
22:11:54 <Ampera> well you can do that here too :P
22:12:00 <Ampera> we have a lot of middle of nowhere
22:12:06 <Ysjoelfir> hehe^^
22:12:15 <Ampera> I'm talking about in a city of 60k in a metro of a million
22:12:51 <Ysjoelfir> I don't want to live in a city anymore. I'm constantly annoyed by everything here. I WANT to live in the middle of nowhere
22:14:34 <Ampera> how do you get groceries and internet
22:14:39 <Ampera> and water
22:14:44 <Ampera> and power
22:14:46 <Ampera> and sewer
22:14:50 <Ysjoelfir> In germany? or in norway?
22:15:04 <Ampera> in bumblefuck norway
22:15:09 <Ysjoelfir> lol
22:15:38 <Ampera> Here when you say middle of nowhere, we can be talking three hours one way to the nearest person
22:16:34 <Ysjoelfir> I'm not sure, you should ask rust_collector for that. afaik they have a good internet connection nearly everywhere, even in the middle of nowhere. water probably from a lake or a hole in the gound, power is afaik usually brought by landlines which they pretty pragmatically just put wherever it is needed. sewage... I don't know about that one.
22:16:50 <Ysjoelfir> with middle of nowhere I was refering to ~45min to the next grocery shop
22:27:56 <K> that is not a very sizeable nowhere.
22:32:07 <Ampera> I mean I can't speak for myself, as my closest proper grocery store is half a mile away
22:33:04 <Ysjoelfir> there is ealso very sizeable nowheres xD but I was refering to something I saw up for sale :)
22:34:11 <Ampera> I think if I ever were to live in Germany, the one thing that would be hardest for me to deal with in my life would be your back asswards thousands delimiter
22:35:09 <Ysjoelfir> xD
22:35:20 <Ysjoelfir> gra Y_Y *beep beep beep beep
22:35:21 <Ysjoelfir> *
22:35:26 * Ysjoelfir is annoyed
22:38:06 <K> calling the regional equivalent of landlord is not an option?
22:38:49 <Ysjoelfir> since that lady is a bitch she whould more likely be telling me that I have hearing problems than caring at all
22:39:10 <Ampera> This is Germany, his lord owns him, and doesn't care BEEP if he is BEEP being slightly BEEP annoyed by something BEEP as simple as a BEEP smoke detector, BEEP which has some BEEP low batteries BEEP
22:39:17 <K> huh
22:39:32 <Ysjoelfir> pretty much exactly that
22:40:26 <Ampera> I actually recall hearing a very random loud beep in the middle of the night and had no idea where it came from
22:40:30 <Ampera> so it's entirely possible I imagined it
22:40:38 <Ampera> just a singular beep woke me up at around 3 in the morning
22:46:06 * steve30 returns from a trip outside
22:46:48 <Ampera> steve30, aren't those illegal?
22:46:50 <Ampera> you criminal!
22:46:50 <steve30> Ysjoelfir, are you familiar with the English sitcom Dad's Army?
22:47:07 <steve30> I was going to the chemist for a prescription, so perfectly legal :)
22:47:27 <Ampera> I'm going out to eat tonight
22:47:46 <Ysjoelfir> nope, I'm not. why? Are there beeps in there?
22:48:01 <steve30> No beeps.
22:48:43 <steve30> The last episode I watched, the BBC announcer warned that is contains discriminatory language which some may find offensive. I'm just trying to find out exactly /who/ finds it offensive, so I thought, maybe Germans.
22:49:02 <steve30> Hitler may also find it offensive, but he died long ago.
22:49:48 <Ysjoelfir> yeah, probably. we germans are very easily offended. well, some. I am not because I don't care at all most of the time :D also: hi steve :) I was outside shopping yesterday with my gas mask. people were delighted. xD
