00:00:04 <rust_collector> I think I will go look if the store is open today.

01:01:28 <rust_collector> YAY! store is open, but I somehow ended up with stuff to make fish soup
01:44:52 <Ampera> rust_collector, that's a strange accident.

01:50:05 <Lemon> aye guys
01:50:09 <Lemon> we got the cat back !
01:50:59 <Ampera> Lemon, how is she doing
01:51:22 <Lemon> definitively better, she need to be away from other cats for a good week and she got some opiods, but she's fine !
01:51:30 <Lemon> but it came at a price
01:52:08 <Lemon> the vet helped us again, but it was 354 euros total
01:52:26 <Lemon> my mother dont really care as long as she is fine
01:52:34 <Lemon> I'll help her
01:57:16 <Ampera> fucking ouch
01:57:28 <Ampera> did you manage to find her kittens?
02:08:02 Join: Dennis_Rodman ([email protected]) to #EEVblog
02:13:25 <Lemon> they are probably dead
02:13:30 <Lemon> its already a good thing she's fine
02:13:39 <Lemon> but our other cats dont seem to like her very much x)
02:14:20 <Lemon> so I found some high value resistors on ebay
02:14:33 <Lemon> and I thought, why not make that decade box a really big one with many values
02:14:35 Quit: Dennis_Rodman ([email protected]) Quit: http://www.kiwiirc.com/ - A hand crafted IRC client
02:14:47 <rust_collector> if you want to keep that one safe, keep an eye out for small rock circles, with twigs and stuff in the middle, and maybe a cross
02:15:19 <Lemon> heh its ok
02:15:29 <Lemon> I got my holy water ready
02:15:34 <Lemon> rusty
02:15:39 <rust_collector> oh
02:15:41 <Lemon> for 70 euros, I can get 10x 100M and 10x 1G resistors
02:15:53 <rust_collector> mmhmm
02:16:38 <Lemon> I can also add 0.1 and 0.01ohms
02:16:46 <Lemon> for a total of 12 decades
02:16:59 <Lemon> sure the cost is higher, but thats a really nice decade box
02:17:13 <Lemon> for a lot less than regular manufacturers
02:17:30 <rust_collector> cost is not a thing. if it was, you would get a cheap one
02:17:53 <rust_collector> something smells fishy here
02:17:53 <Lemon> well its always nice to know how much you saved by building your own
02:18:21 <Lemon> https://www.ebay.fr/itm/10x-Metal-Film-high-value-Resistor-1Gohm-Giga-ohm-1G-Tube-Condenser-Microphone/253232573412
02:18:44 <Lemon> and for other values I found some vishay 1% ones with 50ppm/c tempco, which is better than chinese ones
02:18:50 <Lemon> well regular chinese noname I meant
02:18:54 <Lemon> 35 euros total
02:19:09 <Lemon> so it will be close to 150 with thumbwheel switches and the b ox
02:19:16 <Lemon> thats expensive
02:19:19 <Lemon> hmmmmmm
02:19:33 <Lemon> on the other hand, I will rarely use such high values
02:20:00 <rust_collector> Just hope you get it working well, and you won't have to build a new one next year
02:20:18 <Lemon> no but I think
02:20:23 <Lemon> I will stay at the original idea
02:20:26 <rust_collector> it is still cheap, if your kids will use it when you die
02:20:32 <Lemon> after all its expensive and I'll probably wont use it much
02:20:53 <Lemon> and for 0.1 and 0.01, same story idk if I will use it much
02:20:57 <Lemon> but it wont cost a lot
02:21:39 <rust_collector> I think some of these trees are going to break today. it is pretty windy here
02:22:29 <Lemon> should I put low values but higher wattage ones ?
02:22:43 <Lemon> because I cant see when I'd use a 0.1 ohm quarter watt resistor
02:23:04 <Lemon> thats what, 0.1v max ?
02:24:19 <Lemon> ho also I received my pair of kelvin clips with banana plugs
02:24:27 <Lemon> they are really nice, better than expected
02:25:04 <Lemon> https://www.ebay.fr/itm/0-01R-1-1W-0-01ohm-LVR01-VISHAY-LVR01R0100FE70-Resistor-QTY-2pcs/131775762759?hash=item1eae729147:g:ChYAAOSwZ8ZXCBI8
02:25:08 <rust_collector> i need pics of your tip
02:25:10 <Lemon> those look nice and cheap
02:25:15 <Lemon> my tip ?
02:25:18 <Lemon> rusty please
02:25:23 <rust_collector> of the clips, lol
02:25:35 <rust_collector> what? are you shyyyyyyy?
02:26:04 <Lemon> no, but you better not be :>
02:26:34 <rust_collector> Well, I am not shy, I just stay away from people
02:27:22 <rust_collector> dinner is almost done... this will be interesting. I have not made fish soup in ages.
02:27:50 <Lemon> https://imgur.com/a/vECtamS
02:27:52 <rust_collector> i am not worried about the soup, that came out of a bag, but the fish part...
02:28:08 <Lemon> heh
02:28:11 <Lemon> im not found of it
02:28:53 <rust_collector> https://imgur.com/gallery/uulcL8N
02:28:59 <rust_collector> i am not sure if I get it?
02:29:30 <rust_collector> those look like they would work
02:31:52 <Lemon> the clips ?
02:32:48 <rust_collector> yez
02:32:56 <Lemon> they are for 4 wire measurements
02:33:08 <Lemon> capacitance, inductance, impedance etc
02:33:15 <Lemon> that removes the leads resistance
02:33:18 <rust_collector> heh, yes, but they still look like they would work
02:33:35 <Lemon> yeah why they wouldnt ?
02:33:58 <rust_collector> if they came in 38 pieces, they would be hard to make work
02:34:27 <Lemon> well they were packed correctly
02:34:32 <Lemon> but I thought the quality wouldnt be that good
02:34:38 <Lemon> for 20 or 25 bucks I dont remember
02:34:42 <Lemon> they came quickly
02:35:12 <Lemon> https://www.ebay.fr/itm/1K-0-005-2ppm-VISHAY-Precision-Foil-Resistor-Y00071K00000V9L-S102CT-QTY-1pcs/141440809587?hash=item20ee877a73:g:fSsAAOSw8cNUQChd
02:35:15 <Lemon> I think I'll take one
02:35:19 <Lemon> its from the same seller
02:35:21 <rust_collector> they were probably labeled as medicinal latex boots or something
02:38:03 <Lemon> https://www.ebay.fr/itm/Resistors-0207-1-2260pcs-SET-149-VALUES-10R-100R-1K-110K-QTY-2260pcs/133252183899?hash=item1f0672f75b:g:0gAAAOSwYOxd3RIK
02:38:19 <Lemon> I will cancel the order I made for the kit of chinese resistors and take that one instead
02:38:26 <Lemon> same price but much better quality
02:39:12 <Lemon> its rare to find kits of resistors which arent chinese nonames
02:39:21 <Lemon> im starting to lack some values
02:39:52 <rust_collector> which ones?
02:40:11 <Lemon> I bought a pack of 2600 pcs, 130 values random chinese ones
02:40:26 <Lemon> because I needed some values, and I cba taking just the ones I need
02:40:34 <Lemon> so I'll cancel this one, and get the nice ones instead
02:40:41 <rust_collector> yes, but which ones is getting used up?
02:40:52 <Lemon> ha, well 1k, 10k, 4.7k etc
02:41:02 <Lemon> values that are common
02:41:19 <rust_collector> they may be common for things you do...
02:41:34 <rust_collector> I do use a load of the 1k,
02:41:46 <Lemon> well when you look at any circuit you'll probably find them
02:41:57 <Lemon> 470R, 300R, 200R for leds
02:42:02 <Lemon> 100/200k too
02:42:18 <rust_collector> sure, but most of the circuits I use already have them, so...
02:43:19 <Lemon> well im more talking about things built from the ground up
02:43:24 <Lemon> this seller got nice things
02:43:25 <rust_collector> right
02:44:14 <Lemon> he got some ncie caps
02:44:21 <Lemon> the capacitance decade box might be doable
02:44:30 <rust_collector> hm hm hmmm, i am liking this soup, it is not as fishy as many, and it is not full of non-fish sea things
02:44:31 <Lemon> like 1nF caps, 1% tolerance for 1 euros a pop
02:44:35 <Lemon> thats really cheap
02:44:42 <Lemon> good good
02:44:47 <rust_collector> goes well with baguettes and garlic butter
02:45:43 <rust_collector> I was slightly worried I have to force the kids to eat it, and have a pizza later
02:45:58 <Lemon> how old are the kids ?
02:46:49 <rust_collector> hmm, kid #1 is 20, he moved out a bit ago, Kid #2 is 17, and #3 is 16
02:47:50 <Lemon> still a few years to hold
02:47:59 <rust_collector> we will see
02:48:07 <Lemon> yeah, if they end up like me
02:48:13 <Lemon> 27, still with my dear mother
02:48:22 <Lemon> well its more to help her than something else but
02:48:28 <Lemon> heck I even have my flat
02:48:37 <Lemon> its been one year I havent lived there
02:48:45 <Lemon> not mine im renting it
02:49:47 <rust_collector> well, it is good that you take care of the elders
02:50:12 <Lemon> she isnt that old, but she needs help with the old doggo when she is working
02:50:18 <Lemon> also with them 18 cats
02:51:01 <rust_collector> mom is not "that" old either, but... eeh, age comes quickly
02:51:10 <Lemon> thats true
02:51:26 <rust_collector> hmm, she is 60
02:52:25 <Lemon> 55 mine
02:55:28 <Lemon> shit he really got tons of things that I like
02:56:34 <Lemon> I need more of those things where you put small drawers in it
02:56:37 <Lemon> idk how its called
02:56:44 <Lemon> to store electronic components for example
02:56:51 <Lemon> theres like 30 mini transparent drawers
02:56:52 <rust_collector> a rack
02:57:00 <Lemon> yeah I think it got another name
02:57:07 <Lemon> I got two lidl ones, I regret I didnt buy more
02:57:08 <rust_collector> drawer rack
02:57:26 <rust_collector> We had lidl here, but they went back home
02:57:40 <Lemon> they sell nice things sometimes
02:57:47 <rust_collector> I have some raco ones. they are ok
02:57:48 <Lemon> I paid 9 euros each for those racks
02:57:53 <Lemon> 24 euros for the dremel
02:58:56 <rust_collector> it was just so random, what they had. yes, they have huge sacks of rice and onoins, weird cheap german snacks...

03:07:04 <Nothing\> dammit, i can't get X to work in cygwin for some reason
03:07:54 <Nothing\> usually it just hangs on a black screen and doesn't do anything
03:08:11 <Nothing\> even with something simple like window maker
03:08:55 <Nothing\> oh, i got something with fluxbox, but the desktop is completely bare, no toolbar, nothing but a right click menu and option to switch work spaces
03:09:06 <rust_collector> I think x either works, or it does not, (sort of) I do not think it cares too much about which window manager you try to start
03:09:39 <Nothing\> i dunno, in cygwin some work sort of and some don't
03:09:44 <rust_collector> is it set to a resolution, where you get the stuff inside the screen?
03:09:58 <Nothing\> this is why i'd really love to set up a VM, but VMWare doesn't understand the distros i've tried
03:10:06 <Nothing\> which so far have been debian and mint
03:10:34 <Nothing\> i know ubuntu will work but it's too resource intensive and unity looks like something steve jobs diarrheaed out of his ass
03:10:54 <Nothing\> yeah it's set to a big dimensions
03:10:59 <Nothing\> fluxbox is anyways
03:11:14 <rust_collector> vbox seems to work ok-ish, but I am always afraid when it tries to update...anything
03:11:31 <Nothing\> hrm it doesn't even have a decent browser
03:11:37 <Nothing\> i have to use konquerer
03:11:39 <rust_collector> what?
03:11:43 <Nothing\> fluxbox
03:11:57 <rust_collector> fluxbox has nothing to do with a browser
03:12:05 <Nothing\> and no internet connection
03:12:18 <rust_collector> which... has nothing to do with fluxbox
03:12:24 <Nothing\> no it was the X... thing i used
03:12:45 <Nothing\> i dunno, i just went to X and fluxbox was one of the choices it had along with gnome and kde and WM and all that
03:12:48 <Ampera> NOTHING
03:12:49 * Ampera hugs Nothing\
03:12:51 <Ampera> HOW DO
03:13:09 <Ampera> X/Cygwin is just a waste of time
03:13:14 <Ampera> especially with WSL2 around the corner
03:13:23 <Nothing\> was do alright till kitty just tried to jump up on my lap and caught his claw right in the end of my toe
03:13:27 <Nothing\> fuck that hurt
03:13:32 <Ampera> aww
03:13:40 <Nothing\> this cat's such a handfull
03:13:43 <Ampera> don't ask about Lemon's cat, her vagina exploded
03:13:50 <Nothing\> ew
03:13:57 <rust_collector> nah, it just fell out, lol
03:14:05 <Nothing\> my brother's cat eye keeps exploding, i feel so bad for him
03:14:08 <Lemon> uterus fell out yeah
03:14:15 <Nothing\> it was bulging really bad
03:14:20 <Nothing\> then one day it just burst
03:14:24 <Lemon> ha we got that too, one cat got an eye the size of a golfball
03:14:29 <Lemon> we had to remove it
03:14:29 <Nothing\> he hid under the chair for like 3 days
03:14:47 <Nothing\> yeha my brother hasn't got money for the vet so the poor kitty just has to suffer
03:15:06 <Nothing\> he's old, like 16 now, part of me just hopes he'll die soon sohe won't be suffering anymore
03:15:26 <Ampera> Never a good time when you have to old yeller a pet
03:15:28 <Nothing\> he doesn't live in a good environment anyways, just stays locked in my brother's room with him 24/7
03:15:54 <Nothing\> i took ownership of him for a couple of years a while back so i have a connection to him
03:16:12 <Nothing\> i just told my mom, if anything other than his death happens, just don't tell me cuz i don't want to know
03:17:11 <Nothing\> but yeah Ampera i just got cygwin so i can use this 8051 simulator that runs in X, but so far i haven't found any... i'm not even sure what they're called, like gnome or kde or what have you, that works suitably
03:17:27 <Ampera> Window Managers
03:17:29 <Ampera> try Window Maker
03:17:29 <Nothing\> so i tried vmware, but it doesn't understand any of the distros i try to use
03:17:38 <Nothing\> that's right, windows manager
03:17:39 <Ampera> It works very well on X/Cygwin
03:17:45 <Nothing\> i tried WM, it didn''t do anything
03:17:51 <Nothing\> just hung on a blank screen
03:17:52 <Ampera> WM?
03:17:59 <Nothing\> maybe i haven't configured something right, i dunno
03:18:25 <Nothing\> lol dude, my cat's addicted to youtube videos aready
03:18:54 <Ampera> Always nuts when you go back to an old device and realize how much fun you had with it.
03:19:10 <Ampera> I've always had tablets, they've been my main portables forever, and I'm on what was my second tablet of all time
03:19:11 <Nothing\> i found this channel called daily dose of internet with these like ~3min videos of various interesting things that are actually genuinely interesting, no clickbait, lotsa animal videos he loves
03:19:24 <Ampera> my nvidia shield tablet, which is such a nice Android tablet
03:19:28 <Nothing\> my mom has this old tablet, i forget what kind it is
03:19:34 <Ampera> it makes me genuinely sad nvidia never made another one
03:19:39 <Nothing\> lol the cat's tripping out on the text scrolling by when i type
03:19:41 <Ampera> but unfortunately the days of Android tablets are long gone
03:20:07 <Nothing\> but anyways, the battery in the tablet can't hold a charge longer than maybe 30 mins an takes hours to charge up cuz it's like 5 or 6 years old
03:20:11 <Nothing\> lemme see what kind it is
03:21:27 <Nothing\> samsung galaxy tab S SM-t800
03:21:35 <Nothing\> t-800 hmmm
03:21:38 <Nothing\> it's begun!
03:22:42 <Nothing\> was pretty sweet though, a few years ago she just found it tucked behind the communal mailbox for her apartment building outside so she claimed it
03:23:01 <Nothing\> aside from some minor burn-in it worked a treat
03:23:08 <Nothing\> oh also
03:23:12 * Nothing\ hugs Ampera <3
03:23:20 <Nothing\> sorry buddy, i missed that :(
03:23:31 <Ampera> np
03:23:38 <Ampera> nobody in real life loves me anyways, why would anyone on IRC
03:23:51 <Nothing\> hey of course i love you, man
03:23:58 <Ampera> well that's gay
03:24:02 <Nothing\> no ur
03:24:04 <Nothing\> :P
03:24:23 <Nothing\> lol this suddenly feels like a conversation with cleverbot
03:24:38 <Ampera> I wish Android tablets didn't die off the way they did, but I guess they gave way to x86 stuff
03:24:54 <Ampera> I also find it funny that every new tablet I've had has gotten bigger and bigger
03:25:13 <Nothing\> yeah my mom came into some money so she's gonna get a new tablet
03:25:24 <Ampera> I went from a 7" Kindle Fire to a convertible laptop
03:25:28 <Ampera> ew, I don't need to know that
03:25:40 <Nothing\> lol i see what you did there
03:25:54 <Nothing\> it's okay, i don't think coronavirus spreads that way
03:25:59 <Lemon> I fear I'll spend a lot on components
03:26:06 <Lemon> I found a seller with many things I wanted
03:26:14 <Ampera> Lemon, don't worry, you'll only hate yourself for a week or so
03:26:19 <Lemon> for decade boxes, various stuff etc
03:26:22 <Ampera> until you spend more money on crap
03:26:23 <Ampera> <3
03:26:27 <Nothing\> Lemon, i've bought damn near 100 different chips on aliexpress
03:26:33 <Lemon> hmmm usually I dont regret it
03:26:36 <Nothing\> i don't even know how to use like 3/4 of them
03:26:41 <Lemon> he sells branded stuff for cheap
03:26:49 <Ampera> these chips are made for eating
03:26:49 <Lemon> like 2.3k, 145 different values of resistor
03:26:51 <Lemon> 18 euros total
03:26:52 <Ampera> and that's just what I'll do
03:26:55 <Lemon> vishay, panasonic etc
03:26:58 <Nothing\> i more just got into the habit of collecting chips for the sake of collecting them
03:26:58 <Lemon> no chinese noname
03:27:05 <Ampera> one of these days I'm gonna eat these chips all over you
03:27:09 <Nothing\> Lemon, i've found great use in resistor arrays
03:27:33 <Nothing\> vishay's a good store
03:27:53 <Nothing\> or fantasy electronics has done me right in the past
03:28:04 <Lemon> ho its not vishays' store
03:28:08 <Lemon> its a polish seller
03:28:12 <Nothing\> ah
03:28:33 <Nothing\> i wish i could found a pack of like E6 resistor values or something
03:28:58 <Lemon> https://www.ebay.fr/usr/sm-poland2?_trksid=p2047675.l2559
03:28:58 <Nothing\> but with aliexpress, you have to order each value individually, each of which counts as a separate order
03:29:00 <Lemon> check what he got
03:29:12 <Nothing\> i can't use ebay, they won't take my CC for some reason :/
03:29:23 <Lemon> open a paypal account maybe ?
03:29:24 <Nothing\> maybe cuz it's a debit card
03:29:29 <Lemon> ha we talked about it already
03:29:29 <Nothing\> yeah, so i've been told
03:29:31 <Lemon> I remember
03:29:37 <Nothing\> lol yeah, just rung a bell
03:29:46 <Nothing\> one of these days
03:29:55 <Lemon> it really takes like, 2 minutes
03:29:55 <Nothing\> either that or i'll commandeer my mom's CC and pay her back
03:30:06 <rust_collector> i do not have a credit card, and paypal works just fine. it is just annoying
03:31:05 <Nothing\> i would really like to get an analog scope and ebay seems my best bet
03:31:20 <Lemon> or a local website maybe
03:31:37 <Nothing\> i wanna make lissajous patterns, but the XY display on my DSO just looks ilke a mess of dots
03:31:39 <Lemon> one day I'll get a 2465 or 2467
03:31:45 <Nothing\> nah, there's nothing local around here
03:31:48 <Lemon> or a 485 idk
03:31:55 <Lemon> I want a 300-400Mhz analog scope
03:32:04 <rust_collector> why does no one want a 466?
03:32:25 <Lemon> but for now, decade boxes it is
03:32:46 <Nothing\> i'd also like to get a signal generator and power supply
03:32:50 <Nothing\> and soldering station
03:33:00 <Nothing\> but since getting the kitty, i haven't had time for electronics
03:33:06 <Lemon> get the power supply and a good iron first id say
03:33:06 <Nothing\> damn thing's like looking after a toddler
03:33:13 <Lemon> a ts100 and you're fine
03:33:17 <Lemon> its so great for 50 bucks
03:33:34 <rust_collector> a roll of tape will keep the cat in place
03:33:35 <Nothing\> i could always MAKE my own signal generator
03:33:46 <Lemon> well theres some cheap ones now
03:33:50 <Lemon> those feeltech
03:33:54 <Lemon> they are really nice for the price
03:35:29 <Nothing\> yeah i should really learn more about them before i buy anything
03:35:41 <Nothing\> bigclive has a video on soldering stations i've been meaning to watch
03:35:41 <Lemon> you just need to find a brick for it
03:35:45 <Lemon> and trust me it works really well
03:35:58 <Lemon> you might need two additionnal tips, they are like 10 bucks each
03:36:08 <Lemon> theres even a custom firmware lol
03:36:15 <Lemon> I really love it#
03:36:29 <Lemon> it beats some irons that are in the hundreds
03:36:48 <Nothing\> but i've got one of those XR2206 chips, which is what they usually use to make cheap signal gens, i was thinking i could try my hand at making one myself
03:37:03 <Nothing\> i need new breadboards though, the ones i have are getting too loose, especially the power rails
03:37:13 <Nothing\> so i get intermittent power issues
03:37:20 <Lemon> sure thats a good idea but that will be hard to get a really solid thing like what you can buy for under 100 euros nowadays
03:37:20 <rust_collector> those can do a lot, if you can make all of the things work
03:37:23 <Nothing\> especially when i move anything around
03:37:43 <Nothing\> rust_collector, well tehre are certainly enough example diagrams in the datasheet to go by
03:38:38 <Nothing\> well, i'd probably be looking at spending ~100 euros for my soldering station, power supply and signal gen each
03:39:19 <Lemon> a psu if you look well enough you can get a good one for 50 euros used, the ts100 for 50 + maybe 20 for some tips, and the feeltech gen for under 100
03:39:20 <Nothing\> probabyl from amazon
03:39:24 <Lemon> thats what I'd bought
03:39:28 <Nothing\> something like that i'm not gonna trust from aliexpress
03:39:30 <Lemon> but amazon hmmm they are expensive most of the time
03:39:40 <Lemon> aliexpress is perfect
03:39:43 <Lemon> you risk nothing trust me
03:39:57 <Lemon> I bought stuff in the hundreds on it multiple times
03:39:58 <Nothing\> i dunno, damn near every chip i got from aliexpress has been counterfeit
03:40:03 <Lemon> never got an issue
03:40:12 <Nothing\> so it oden't bode well for me
03:40:18 <Lemon> ho you wont get a counterfeit ts100, or feeltech lol
03:40:33 <Lemon> just tell me when you're ready and I'll help you find everything !
03:40:37 <Nothing\> plus the shipping time to horrendous
03:40:52 <Nothing\> and i've only recieved maybe 70-80% of my orders
03:41:11 <Nothing\> i'd rather pay a premium for that extra peace of mind
03:41:11 <Lemon> if you have a problem just tell the seller, you'll be refunded instantly
03:41:34 <Nothing\> oh i know, but then that means waiting another 2-3 months for an order that might not necessarily arrive again
03:41:35 <Lemon> aliexpress is probably one of the websites I trust th emost
03:41:43 <Lemon> nahhhh
03:41:53 <Nothing\> i don't trust them, but for their prices, i use them for just about everything
03:41:56 <Lemon> if you look well enough it comes in 2-3 weeks max
03:42:08 <Nothing\> not in these covid days
03:42:16 <Lemon> ho it is !
03:42:21 <Lemon> I got stuff in under two weeks :>
03:42:23 <Nothing\> i placed 6 orders in february, i've only recieved 1 so far
03:42:36 <Lemon> but which sellers/delivery method ?
03:42:43 <Nothing\> epacket
03:42:44 <Lemon> because theres some methods that are 30-50 days
03:42:47 <Lemon> so yeah it takes time
03:42:55 <Lemon> but most of the time its 2-3 weeks with the right method
03:42:58 <Nothing\> that's the shorter one
03:42:59 <Nothing\> 15
03:43:05 <Nothing\> 15-30 days or so
03:43:06 <Lemon> I dont remember the names, they are almost the sames
03:43:25 <Nothing\> yeha other than epacket, i do'nt remember them alll
03:43:34 <Lemon> well dont hesitate to tell the seller, they will refund you instantly
03:43:46 <rust_collector> they should use delivery torpedos.
03:43:46 <Nothing\> usually they give me the run around
03:43:47 <Lemon> out of maybe 150-200 orders it maybe happenned to me 3-5 times
03:43:58 <Nothing\> one seller bitched and moaned because my refund would affect her rating somehow
03:44:06 <Lemon> really ?
03:44:07 <Nothing\> and tried to get me to cancel it
03:44:09 <Nothing\> yeah
03:44:18 <Lemon> how many ratings he had ?
03:44:23 <Nothing\> no clue
03:44:23 <Lemon> in the 100k+ ?
03:44:30 <Nothing\> yeah it was a lot
03:44:40 <Lemon> thats really, really rare
03:44:54 <Nothing\> i dunno, a lot of them give me a hard time
03:44:56 <Lemon> and ratings arent affected if he refunds it
03:45:00 <Lemon> so thats a bit weird
03:45:05 <Nothing\> "oh just give it another month, it'll come"
03:45:09 <Nothing\> shit like that
03:45:19 <Lemon> yeah you gotta push them a bit sometimes
03:45:34 <Nothing\> and by that time i've forgotten about it and don't end up getting the refund after all
03:45:50 <Nothing\> but most of my orders are less than $5 anyways so it's no big deal
03:45:55 <Nothing\> it's the principle of the thing
03:46:12 <Lemon> yeah I bitch for 30 cents
03:46:14 <Nothing\> and the inconvenience of not getting a chip i'm excited about getting
03:47:00 <Nothing\> ah my kitty really likes this fresh air i'm getting in here
03:47:16 <Nothing\> it's like 25 outside so i've got all the windows open for the first time in a while
03:47:21 <Nothing\> he's loving it
03:47:35 <Lemon> heh 24,99C here exactly
03:47:45 <Nothing\> vtan fol+
03:47:51 <Nothing\> oh, temp
03:48:09 <Nothing\> bah, my brain keeps switching between dvorak and qwerty at random
03:48:15 <Nothing\> and i don't even notice
03:48:17 <rust_collector> eat some beans, and you will have 15.2 in no time
03:48:26 <rust_collector> 25.2
03:48:35 <Nothing\> i need some beans, i'm so damn blocked up lately
03:49:13 <Nothing\> i'm one step away from a full blown bowel obstruction, literally
03:49:28 <Nothing\> i actually tore myself yesterday :(
03:49:50 <Lemon> haaa I know your pain
03:50:04 <Nothing\> are you familiar with the bristol stool chart?
03:50:04 <Lemon> I think I shit once per week at best
03:50:28 <Nothing\> https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bristol_stool_scale#/media/File:BristolStoolChart_(cropped).png
03:50:50 <Nothing\> i shit almost once a day, but it's not enough volume
03:51:31 <Nothing\> i end up getting what i call type 0 stools, where you get a bunch of those type 1 rabbit turds that have all fused together into one gigantic superturd that's almost imossible to pass
03:51:58 <Nothing\> which i'm pretty sure is how bowel obstructions happen
03:52:33 <Nothing\> and that's with taking 1.5x the recommended daily dose of lactulose plus sennakot
03:52:54 <Nothing\> used to be i'd take 1 sennakot and it'd clear me right out, but now it doesn't do a thing for me
03:53:24 <Lemon> you know we both have the same issue, which is methadone
03:53:35 <Nothing\> oh yeah i forgot you're on methadone
03:53:52 <Lemon> also I received this today https://imgur.com/a/vECtamS
03:53:58 <Ampera> ugh 3 more hours until work is over
03:54:02 <Ampera> then I have my 3 day weekend
03:54:06 <Nothing\> but yeah, lactulose is the go-to laxative for opioid users, and it's cheap, i'd recommend trying it if you need to
03:54:20 <Nothing\> Ampera, awesome, why 3 days? some sort of holiday?
03:54:38 <Nothing\> ooh those are nice Lemon
03:54:50 <Lemon> really good for 20 euros yeah
03:54:51 <Ampera> Memorial day
03:54:53 <Nothing\> i need to get a good set of clip probes with banana jack connections
03:55:03 <Nothing\> Ampera, ahh, we just had victoria day last weekend
03:55:36 <rust_collector> 4 wire nipple clamps. they are much cheaper than if you order test equipment rated ones.
03:55:39 <Nothing\> https://media.digikey.com/Photos/Pomona%20Photos/4176-02.jpg
03:55:45 <Nothing\> these sorts of probes for a DMM
03:56:06 <Nothing\> the ones i've had in the past, the connection between the wire and the probe have always broken off after moderate use
03:56:31 <Lemon> I really need them
03:56:35 <Lemon> those are mini grabbers
03:56:42 <Lemon> those and mueller croc clips
03:56:47 <Nothing\> ah, i always searched for clip probes
03:56:56 <Nothing\> maybe i'll get better results searching mini grabbers
03:57:31 <Lemon> mueller make nice ones
03:57:33 <Lemon> if you can find them
03:57:42 <Lemon> they got them on digikey but fuck the custom fees to france
03:58:14 <Lemon> I plan to build multiple things
03:58:22 <Lemon> a 4 channel 5.5 digits voltmeter
03:58:31 <Lemon> resistor/capacitance and maybe inductance decade boxes
03:59:33 <Lemon> I built a precise thermometer lately
04:00:26 <Nothing\> the other tihng is finding probes where the insullation isn't stiff as hell
04:00:28 <Lemon> its nice to build tools
04:00:40 <Lemon> especially when they are as good as the ones you'd pay a fortune for them
04:00:47 <Lemon> ha you need silicone wires

04:00:56 <Nothing\> yeah that's what i figured
04:00:57 <Lemon> pvc is stiff
04:01:01 <Lemon> well sometimes its ok
04:01:07 <Lemon> I got some pvc ones that are like silicone
04:01:13 <Nothing\> first time i used wires with silicone it was like heaven
04:01:29 <Lemon> yeah I got some old muller probes that were my fathers
04:01:32 <Lemon> they are really nice
04:02:29 <Ampera> Hi ThunderSqueak, how are you doing
04:07:45 <ThunderSqueak> doing ok, just looking for a job still

05:08:27 <Lemon> ok rust_collector I made my shopping basket
05:08:39 <Lemon> I found some nice resistors decently priced
05:08:50 <Lemon> some for various projects, and some for the decade box
05:08:52 <rust_collector> good good
05:09:29 <Lemon> but theres a lot
05:09:41 <Lemon> so thats expensive
05:09:54 <rust_collector> as long as you got some bonus opamps...
05:10:03 <Lemon> erf not even I fear
05:26:35 <Lemon> ok I found some 0.1% 25ppm/C ones for cheaper
05:26:45 <Lemon> even with shipping its way better
05:26:56 <Lemon> from 10ohms to 1Mohms
05:26:59 <rust_collector> but they are not from poland?
05:27:09 <Lemon> germany
05:27:14 <Lemon> 2.09 euros per 10
05:27:18 <Lemon> but theres 14 euros shipping
05:27:24 <Lemon> but even with shipping its cheaper so well
05:27:25 <rust_collector> awww,
05:27:38 <Lemon> but dont worry I will get some stuff from poland anyway
05:27:44 <rust_collector> yes
05:28:09 <rust_collector> then some czech, and ukranian stuff after that
05:32:30 <Lemon> 106 euros total, approx
05:32:44 <Lemon> for 5 of those dual + one blank thumbwheel switches
05:33:29 <Lemon> from 0.01 to 10M resistors ranging from 0.1% for 10R to 1M to 1% for 1R, 10M and 0.01R, and 5% for 0.1R
05:33:43 <Lemon> and a big pack of all values
05:33:59 <Lemon> + a nice 0.005% 1K that I'll use as a standard
05:34:50 <rust_collector> did you get your things hooked up to your meter-net yet?
05:35:11 <Lemon> well they need to come here first
05:36:01 <rust_collector> the cable stuff to computerize your meters
05:36:09 <rust_collector> is it working
05:36:51 <Lemon> haa well I got some commands to work but no I need more time honestly

05:37:22 <rust_collector> ok, what more do you need to order? do you have good wire and stuff?
05:37:40 <Lemon> well im looking around but it seems good so far
05:38:10 <rust_collector> ok, then get your meter-net working, before the rest of the stuff comes
05:38:28 <Lemon> I'll work on it yeah
05:40:18 <rust_collector> yes, you made us hear about that stuff for weeks, now go make it work
05:40:41 <Lemon> but rusty its so hard
05:41:16 <Lemon> idk why but I can only find 0.1R in 5%
05:41:22 <Lemon> yet I found some 0.01R in 1%
05:41:26 <Lemon> that bothers me
05:42:11 <rust_collector> yeah, jus ttalk about something else, lol
05:42:20 <Lemon> :>>>
05:42:30 <Lemon> lets try those kelvin clips
05:42:56 <rust_collector> ok, what are you going to measure now?
05:43:10 <Lemon> ho just a random resistor to see how stable is it compared to 2 wires
05:43:29 <rust_collector> just compare it to the 101
05:44:23 <rust_collector> more or less for fun
05:45:18 <T3sl4> Halcyon: https://i.imgur.com/D2AKNiY.jpg
06:02:30 <rust_collector> oh crap https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AYbgUrvJOuY
06:10:27 <Lemon> ok, I now need a nice box for the decade resistor box
06:10:39 <Lemon> it will have 10 decades
06:10:45 <Lemon> 0.01R to 10M
06:10:47 <rust_collector> just buy 10 boxes
06:10:52 <rust_collector> or 6
06:11:36 <Lemon> while im at it, it could be nice to order some power resistors to make attenuators
06:11:40 <Lemon> I have a few of them
06:11:45 <Lemon> but not every value, and they are expensive
06:12:04 <Lemon> im sure building a variable one shouldnt be too hard/expensive
06:13:48 <Lemon> my little bg7tbl counter can measure dbms
06:13:54 <Lemon> to a certain extent but still
06:16:44 <Lemon> how do you call those shelves with many mini transparent drawers to store electronic parts ?
06:17:13 <rust_collector> drawer rack, is what I call them

07:05:05 <Lemon> rusty I found cheap but good 100M resistors, yay
07:05:08 <Lemon> another decade !
07:05:43 <Lemon> https://www.ebay.fr/itm/4-pcs-Thick-Film-High-Voltage-Resistors-100M-Ohm-0-125W-1-8W-5/264461660726?hash=item3d9324b236:g:yn0AAOSwVlRdeQTz
07:06:01 <Lemon> 14 euros to add a 100M decade is ok
07:06:02 <rust_collector> I am not going anywhere, what are you talking about? i just want a bed out there. Weather is pretty crap, so I want to be outside, indoors
07:07:16 <Lemon> im too tired to understand

07:07:24 <rust_collector> what?
07:07:42 <rust_collector> I see, you have to stop reading ebay crap.
07:08:25 <rust_collector> ooh, some nice red soviet things
07:08:50 <Lemon> but damn, 9cm wide
07:08:54 <Lemon> thats a problem
07:09:08 <Lemon> 10% tolerance, thats +- 100Mohms lol

07:09:58 <Lemon> theres those too
07:11:05 <rust_collector> there are too many kinds of resistor out there for you to post a link to every one of them here
07:11:16 <Lemon> yeah true
07:11:29 <Lemon> well unless I find some cheap 1G ohms resistor I think I'll pass
07:11:43 <rust_collector> make a list and put it on pastebin or something, lol
07:14:05 <Lemon> I asked the guy if he knows the tolerance
07:14:17 <Lemon> if its decent, I'll get them, 20 euros total to add a 1Gohm decade is ok
07:14:24 <Lemon> then I stop and order everything
07:19:47 <Lemon> damn there was some nice 100M 1% resistors but only 6 left
07:19:50 <Lemon> what a shame

08:54:46 <rust_collector> WOT!??! I just had a look at a box of "foot bath" pellet like things. it is urea. I wonder how much they make by selling that in tiny boxes
08:57:11 <rust_collector> I mean, you get that in 25kg bags, more or less for free
09:16:15 <MrMobodies> a bit disappointed with the printhead
09:16:36 <MrMobodies> the printer was about to print and error code when it starts to print
09:16:53 <MrMobodies> new printhead £90 and the printer is worth £130
09:16:58 <MrMobodies> not worth it
09:17:24 <MrMobodies> I think the ink has gotten everywhere
09:18:09 <MrMobodies> a lesson to the customer if they are going to use third party inks make sure they do their research on a reputable brand and pay a decent price (not too cheap)
09:18:28 <MrMobodies> these cartridges LEAKED everywhere
09:18:39 <rust_collector> eeh. do you thing the ink dissolved a seal or something?
09:18:57 <rust_collector> oh, the cartridges themseves?
09:18:58 <MrMobodies> I think the cartridges were dodgy
09:19:09 <MrMobodies> I have some OEM first use ones
09:19:14 <MrMobodies> that don't leak upside down
09:19:33 <MrMobodies> The dodgy ones I had to throw away. I had them upside down and leaked out of the cases and dripped on the ground some weeks ago
09:19:44 <MrMobodies> it went on the carpets and i had to around the house
09:19:57 <MrMobodies> with alcohol and thankfully I got it off
09:20:10 <rust_collector> well, I do in general hate printers
09:21:05 <MrMobodies> This was only a year old, 134 pages
09:21:43 <MrMobodies> they brought crap ink, They told me it works for 2 days and then they had error messages and it woudn't print.
09:22:00 <rust_collector> Wife has bought... I don't know how many printers. almost all of them were cheap all in one hp ones. they are all ok when new. but she does not use them enough.
09:22:15 <MrMobodies> why? well ink everywhere on the paper tray, now I have a suspicion it got into other places and over the sensors
09:23:07 <rust_collector> do those use the optical sensor things?
09:23:21 <MrMobodies> Next person with a clogged ink head, I'll use my solution, and syringe if it goes through, fine
09:23:38 <MrMobodies> if it doesn't = new printhead
09:24:13 <MrMobodies> Maybe as you said, I think too much.
09:24:17 <rust_collector> do most people come to you with cheap printers, or are they better models?
09:25:43 <rust_collector> I do have a version of the same thing here, just that I do cars, not computer things. I do not like throwing away something that can be fixed, but it is seriously not often it makes economic sense
09:27:21 <MrMobodies> it is a nice printer
09:27:27 <rust_collector> I got a nice compact hp laser printer from work. I think it won't even use the toner that is in it now, before I die. but I got a spare, just in case. I almost only need to print text, so that is fine.
09:27:35 <MrMobodies> It was worth more when they got it, but brought crap ink
09:27:47 <MrMobodies> So thought it was worth fixing
09:28:16 <MrMobodies> but I might as well buy another one that spend £90 or or £40 for a dodgy one for a used China
09:28:30 <MrMobodies> Aaah so you are a mechanic
09:28:36 <rust_collector> well, the thing is, is it worth finding part for it, and pay for the work... I suppose most any printer is nice enough, as such
09:28:53 <rust_collector> no, not a mechanic, I just do fix a lot of car stuff
09:29:01 <MrMobodies> The printer is an Epson WF-7110
09:29:13 <MrMobodies> it has network scanning which I like
09:29:29 <MrMobodies> I can get an ink resovour for it
09:29:47 <rust_collector> basic things, brakes, joints and bushings, a bit of welding, diagnosing varoius systems.
09:30:13 <rust_collector> network scanning. so... how?
09:30:13 <EEVBlog> NBN, HAH, more like No Broadband Network!
09:30:36 <MrMobodies> Like the HP 6200, you can select a network folder
09:30:46 <MrMobodies> default asettings, PDF/JPG
09:30:52 <MrMobodies> you have names/boxes
09:30:57 <MrMobodies> and just put a network path in there
09:31:09 <MrMobodies> and as you are scanning it created the files
09:31:15 <rust_collector> oh right
09:31:34 <MrMobodies> o the hp you can set a custom filename counter and so on
09:31:43 <MrMobodies> So I could be in an office
09:31:55 <MrMobodies> 4 people, put their names on there, four folders on a server and
09:32:08 <rust_collector> the wifes inkjet hp thing even came with games, and they change when you update it, lol
09:32:10 <MrMobodies> I prefer to have 1 folder for JPG'S and one for PDF'S
09:32:19 <MrMobodies> so much easy and quicker
09:32:27 <MrMobodies> AAAAHAHHH i REMEMBER
09:32:34 <MrMobodies> I came across one of those in 2018
09:32:39 <MrMobodies> and I thought it wad crazy
09:32:48 <MrMobodies> couldn't switch it off
09:32:52 <MrMobodies> games at the top
09:32:57 <MrMobodies> the tiles i mean
09:33:18 <rust_collector> yes, totally, but... eeh, why not?. I had to dig thru the menus to discover it, so it is not exactly in the way
09:34:09 <MrMobodies> is it a 6000 series?
09:34:25 <rust_collector> it is a... uhm let me see
09:34:44 <rust_collector> envy 5540
09:34:50 <rust_collector> basic home thing
09:36:37 <rust_collector> I was thinking, that maybe I could mange one of the old printers, and only use it as a scanner. i don't know, But I think they are dumb enough to not notice that the printer is no longer there
09:36:46 <rust_collector> mangle, not mange
09:37:37 <MrMobodies> https://imgur.com/a/WQqNUxL
09:38:00 <MrMobodies> absolutely terrible that they had to make a nice printer and ruin it with things like that
09:38:33 <rust_collector> wth?
09:38:45 <rust_collector> i do like tintin, but
09:38:59 <MrMobodies> I searched and and I found threads on HP complaining about the games on the front screen but they said it couldn't be switched off
09:39:24 <rust_collector> meh, someone has that figured out
09:40:00 <rust_collector> I do like my little laser thing. but I guess I would like a scanner some times
09:40:47 <rust_collector> it is just a little laserjet p1102 it does exactly what i tell it to, which is putting black letters on a piece of paper
09:41:35 <MrMobodies> when you say games? is that on the printer or software?
09:42:06 <MrMobodies> https://www.amazon.co.uk/HP-LaserJet-P1102-Laser-Printer/dp/B003ANFRU2
09:42:20 <MrMobodies> Looking at the reviews, actually I remembered I came across one of those in a warehouse
09:42:21 <rust_collector> on the wifes printer, you can make it print board games
09:42:50 <rust_collector> which sound much more sane than your paddington bear thing
09:43:06 <MrMobodies> like a childrens printer
09:43:18 <MrMobodies> whent put these things on there
09:43:44 <MrMobodies> The printer in the warehouse looked like that one and it had only usb, but I got an old ethtnernet print server
09:43:51 <MrMobodies> really fast
09:43:52 <rust_collector> so, as you know things... what would you say about my little 1102 thing?
09:44:00 <EEVBlog> New EEVBlog Tweet: It's true, I'm no tool. https://t.co/Y8WR5uKfcE
09:44:29 <MrMobodies> I think I came across one of those, USB only, very fast I think, I had really old USB printer server I found in the skip, HP branded 13v
09:45:00 <MrMobodies> and it worked, a few marks on the paper as it was dirty but we used it for quick printing for the warehouse workers
09:45:29 <MrMobodies> very reliable no jams and for a year it still had the first laserjet cartridge
09:45:34 <MrMobodies> I'll have to find some pictures
09:45:39 <rust_collector> well, yes, it has one usb, but my router has a print server function, if I want that. but I just have it plugged into my desktop
09:46:50 Join: Dennis_Rodman ([email protected]) to #EEVblog
09:46:52 <rust_collector> I wonder if I can make my own little print server, which sends black text to the laser printer, and colour pictures and stuff to the wifes inkjet
09:47:07 <MrMobodies> https://i.imgur.com/qljGAIN.jpg
09:47:18 <MrMobodies> that's the only , I think it is the same or similar
09:47:34 <MrMobodies> the one behind the screen on the left
09:48:24 <rust_collector> yeah, looks about the same
09:48:41 <MrMobodies> they were about to bin it, but it was a good performance... and I gave them that HP print server, press the print button and it start printing
09:48:45 <MrMobodies> I love it when they do that
09:48:58 <rust_collector> it is full of "just works" as long as i do not try to install any hp software on my confuser
09:49:15 <MrMobodies> I just get the print drivers,
09:49:18 <MrMobodies> extract them
09:49:23 <MrMobodies> get the inf files and put them in myself
09:49:28 <MrMobodies> soooo much easier
09:49:37 <MrMobodies> and add printer manually by IP
09:49:59 <MrMobodies> use the installer and i see on Windows it chooses a WPD port and it stops working sometimes
09:50:28 <rust_collector> my OS just tries to look for any random printer, and just uses it, which is fine for text stuff, I guess
09:50:59 <rust_collector> I do not use windows, i guess it would work ok there
09:51:15 <MrMobodies> I have been in some places where the network printers stop and it turns out to be WPD, so when I select IP it works no problems
09:51:37 Quit: Dennis_Rodman ([email protected]) Quit: http://www.kiwiirc.com/ - A hand crafted IRC client
09:51:54 <MrMobodies> I just wondered what is the point of Windows Printer D? if it is not reliable and just stops
09:52:26 <rust_collector> I have wondered what the point of windows after 3.11 was, but ok
09:53:24 <rust_collector> so, what do you think? do you think the scanner on a multifunction hobby style printer would work, without the printer?
09:54:00 <MrMobodies> it seems to on some
09:54:15 <MrMobodies> like that Epson WF-7110
09:54:20 <rust_collector> When i take them apart, they do look very modular
09:54:36 <MrMobodies> and the HP 8600 series, it can scan to network without needing cartridges I think
09:54:55 <MrMobodies> nmaybe they come out from the same factory
09:55:07 <MrMobodies> the manufacturers specify what they want
09:55:19 <rust_collector> that is one annoying thing. wifes hps can not print in b/w, if the yellow or...other colour is empty
09:55:21 <MrMobodies> I know Planex in Taipei had that sort of thing going
09:55:45 <MrMobodies> I remember that problem with some printers before
09:56:09 <MrMobodies> I had a HP 2710, when it is out of colour still prints blac
09:56:20 <MrMobodies> when it had no black it used the colours to make black
09:56:29 <MrMobodies> It gives a prompt though
09:56:47 <MrMobodies> the cartridges were tiny and expensive only a two head, but it was a network printer
09:56:47 <rust_collector> now, we stil have one down in the basement... it is a brother, I think. But wife hates that thing, for some reason. i never tried it.
09:57:06 <MrMobodies> I think brother are cheap and reliable when I came across them
09:57:24 <MrMobodies> I had one at a training centre, but toners cost a bit for it
09:57:37 <MrMobodies> in the end, I hooked up the Canon IR3045 to the network switch
09:57:41 <rust_collector> yes, this is probably an ink sort of thing
09:58:02 <MrMobodies> and by the time they went upstair it finished printing everyones ecam results
09:58:15 <rust_collector> Meh, I will saw an old hp in half, and see if the scanner works or not
09:58:48 <MrMobodies> I think the HP scanner some of them are cheap looking
09:59:03 <rust_collector> yes, they were cheap, so I bet they are cheap
09:59:17 <MrMobodies> they work alright but they got that cheap plastic thing and foam stuck down on the cover
09:59:30 <MrMobodies> the 4000 and 6800 series
09:59:35 <rust_collector> but... as I said, I just do text. as long as I can see text, i don't care
10:00:10 <rust_collector> hmm, yes, I think ours are 44xx something, they do have the plastic sheet on foam thing in the lid
10:00:25 <MrMobodies> I had to stick my down as it fell halfway off
10:00:39 <MrMobodies> whereas the one i got in 2003 LCD screen 8 line
10:00:44 <MrMobodies> had a plastic raised cover
10:01:03 <MrMobodies> worked until the day I threw it out BUT inks were cheap t wa sjust very slow like the 2700
10:01:36 <MrMobodies> when I moved a friend gave me his printer, A 4600 HP, unfortunately it is falling apart
10:01:48 <rust_collector> I think I will just throw one of these things on the saw, and take to top part off.
10:02:14 <rust_collector> if nothing else, it is a quick way to take it apart
10:02:46 <MrMobodies> I have seen networks scanners going for a lot more than these all in ones
10:02:54 <MrMobodies> About £230 last year
10:02:58 <rust_collector> oh sure
10:36:32 <Halcyon> Morning all
10:37:10 <rust_collector> HELLO!!!!
10:38:36 <rust_collector> How are things down there?
10:43:08 <Halcyon> Not too bad, what's happening?
10:45:37 <rust_collector> i am chatting with my boyfriend in kolkata
10:46:06 <rust_collector> OopS?
10:46:10 <Halcyon> Boyfriend?
10:46:14 <Halcyon> Something you want to tell me rust_collector :P
10:46:14 <rust_collector> i mean... some guy in india
10:47:44 <rust_collector> Yes, I am just joking... butt... I have been chatting with this guy for a few years now.
10:48:11 <Halcyon> I've been watching documentaries about Kolkata the last few days
10:48:25 <Halcyon> It's fascinating and really makes you appreciate what we have
10:48:55 <rust_collector> yes
10:49:50 <rust_collector> almost all of the buildings are british, just with POW! indian colours. everything is full of shit and garbage, but... I guess it is not the worst palce either
10:50:44 <Halcyon> This is in a few parts but this is what I was watching: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jv8qwg0bJC0
10:51:28 <rust_collector> what is all ffff... I am not all here, so I forgot to put my earbud in
10:54:29 <rust_collector> the wife and I have actually thought about going to visit this guy. It will be interesting
10:58:36 <rust_collector> they have the most messed up addresses, maybe except in china
10:58:54 <Halcyon> Oh?
10:59:12 <Halcyon> Big Clive's was weird enough, he didn't have a street number, just a house name
10:59:29 <rust_collector> yes, I think that is a british thing
10:59:50 <rust_collector> yellow tower, or blue hut
11:00:13 <Halcyon> It's seem inefficient
11:00:38 <rust_collector> yes, I saw lots of posts about it, on the forums, when I was on forums.
11:02:06 <rust_collector> Now, in kolkata, they do have proper addresses, but it is like... let me look it up, so I don't just tell crap
11:04:03 <rust_collector> ok, so it would be like:
11:05:17 <rust_collector> 19283 moobs town block g, west bengal,29393938292, kolkata innja... ok, it is not completely crazy, but... nah
11:05:34 <EEVBlog> New EEVBlog Retweet: Tube Time: what kind of sadist makes a breadboard that is 3 rows too short to fit a 40-pin DIP? 🙃 https://t.co/NKlKTDfQad
11:05:34 <rust_collector> i guess that one made much more sense than some
11:06:12 <Halcyon> Hm
11:08:07 <rust_collector> hmm, the wind has stopped here. i was almost sure I would have to drag trees off the road, for a while. then it started raining pretty hard, then it just quit
11:12:26 <rust_collector> heh, as long as I wear my cap, i do not feel like cutting my hair, lol
11:12:41 <rust_collector> i probably should anyway
11:14:17 <Halcyon> I get a haircut every 2 weeks
11:14:43 <rust_collector> I have not had really short hair since I was in the military, and I did look like a wannabe hitlerjugend. i am not sure
11:15:01 <rust_collector> i usually cut my hair before christmas, and on the 18th of may
11:15:39 <rust_collector> but, I do not have much hair left, so I might as well swoosh it off, I guess
11:15:59 <rust_collector> well, I have a lot in the back. not much up top
11:20:38 <Halcyon> Like a mullett?
11:20:39 <Halcyon> :P
11:21:07 <rust_collector> hehe, I took a selfie, because the phone does that. I guess I look like I will most likely kill you
11:21:21 <rust_collector> well, sort of-ish, I guess
11:21:37 <rust_collector> at least, with the cap on, it looks mullet-ish
11:23:17 <Halcyon> Fuck yes, I managed to recover data off an old floppy disk which wouldn't read anymore
11:24:09 <rust_collector> ok, I will make you all suffer a little bit. https://imgur.com/a/Dq5cEsI
11:24:18 <rust_collector> ooh, floppy
11:24:25 <rust_collector> what did you use for that?
11:25:02 <Halcyon> A Kryoflux board
11:25:18 <rust_collector> sound too much like an actual thing
11:25:41 <Halcyon> I did an initial read, then cleaned the disk several times, re-reading each time. Then I took the known good blocks from each read, combined them into a single disk image and got all the data off
11:26:04 <Halcyon> I think the disk started to get mold or something growing in it. It smelled musty
11:26:49 <rust_collector> oh, physical cleaning. nice
11:26:58 <Halcyon> But yeh kryoflux reads and stores the raw signal from the media and stores each sector in an individual file
11:27:01 <rust_collector> I guess that maakes sense
11:27:09 <Halcyon> It doesn't care what "data" it actually reads from the media
11:27:55 <rust_collector> right
11:28:02 <rust_collector> well, that is interesting
11:29:19 <rust_collector> heh, I think it is pretty neat that someone made that. I guess lots of gevernment and large company things are still on floppys
11:29:48 <rust_collector> They still use them for patient lists and such here, for the doctors
11:31:36 <Halcyon> Yeh they use it for archival preservation and data recovery
11:31:42 <Halcyon> Actually a really cheap solution for what it does
11:36:00 <rust_collector> I believe they are fairly reliable, so... if you store them properly....
11:36:50 <DHess_US> The 8 and 5.25 inch ones are. The later 3.5 inch ones are not very reliable.
11:37:32 <DHess_US> The biggest problem with 8 inch ones was maintaining alignment.
11:37:38 <rust_collector> ok? what happens to them?
11:37:59 <DHess_US> The 3.5 inch ones? The quality of the disks is often questionable.
11:38:03 <rust_collector> yes, 3.5
11:38:12 <rust_collector> ok, so they were just "cheap"
11:38:33 <Halcyon> Yeh I think this disk was just stored in a bad place
11:38:42 <DHess_US> The early 3.5" disks were pretty good. But the later ones suffer from bit rot pretty quickly for some reason.
11:38:59 <DHess_US> I don't think it has to do with density.
11:39:09 <rust_collector> i would think the hard plactic case would be good, if the disc was made properly...
11:39:30 <rust_collector> i think i have heard about that, the later ones were pretty crap, compared to the older ones
11:40:11 <DHess_US> I think the king of reliability was magneto-optical.
11:40:34 <DHess_US> Assuming the drive was reliable of course which all of mine were.
11:41:14 <DHess_US> For "reliable" modern portable storage, I have had to use desktop SSDs in a USB case.
11:41:28 <rust_collector> heh, I think I have a box of those 3.5" ones in the basement. I do have an usb drive for those... maybe I should have a look at them
11:41:53 <DHess_US> Yea, I have a USB 3.5" drive somewhere from my old laptop.
11:41:55 <rust_collector> it could be that they are from when mom put autocad on "my" old olivetti
11:42:10 <DHess_US> My desktops still all have 3.5" drives.
11:42:17 <rust_collector> mine is an old new in box, from work
11:43:14 <DHess_US> I built my current desktop about 10 years ago and 3.5" floppy drives were still supported then.
11:43:14 <rust_collector> i do not have any machines old enough, i think some of the p4 boxes have the 3.5", nothing older
11:44:43 <rust_collector> hmm, have you come across usb ports "dropping out" after a day or two?
11:44:54 <rust_collector> if I reboot, the come back up
11:45:05 <DHess_US> Only if something was broken.
11:45:13 <rust_collector> right
11:45:36 <rust_collector> Well. i guess it is time for this desktop....
11:45:48 <rust_collector> it has had a hard life, with an easy job
11:50:09 <rust_collector> hmm, now that i think about it... if an usb port, or an usb controller thinks something is wrong, and "shut down" does it kill power to it as well?. I guess it depends...
11:51:53 <rust_collector> but I think it is weird that it does it, to the rear ports, i can still use the front ports, for a day or two, then they also shut down. so it seems to me, like there are 2 usb controller chips on the mb? I would not think they would fail at the same time
11:57:55 <rust_collector> meh, it is time to plop a new mb in it. at least I can have usb3
11:59:43 <DHess_US> I'm waiting until I can get the AMD Ryzen processor I want for a good price.
12:01:52 <rust_collector> I have a couple of boxes that are newer than this one, so even that old junk is an upgrade. but I just like the shape of this box. it is a "sff" hp elite somenumber. not super compact, but close enough
12:03:35 <rust_collector> kid got a ryzen, that I am 82% sure has a faulty temp sensor, that was interesting to get fixed.
12:04:17 <rust_collector> no no, it is... your settings,,,that...we did when we assembled it... oops

18:59:21 <Lemon> hi frens
19:02:01 <steve30> I'm just watching an advert for a 'Smart Dot' Apparently it will protect me from 5G
19:06:45 <Lemon> well after spending hours looking on ebay for the right parts
19:06:58 <Lemon> I think I'll be able to build a pretty nice thumbwheel switches based resistor decade box
19:07:12 <Lemon> from 0.01R to 100Mohms, maybe 1Gohms
19:07:42 * steve30 prods Halcyon
19:07:54 <Lemon> with some silver plated USSR switches
19:08:06 <Lemon> various branded 0.1% resistors

19:09:37 <Lemon> they are nice
19:11:22 <Lemon> I should get some silver solder
19:11:28 <Lemon> to avoid heating resistors
19:11:38 <Lemon> and switches are silver plated, so I guess thats a plus
19:11:46 <Lemon> (probably change nothing)

21:17:20 <steve30> I think cats kinda like the idea of killing people, but if they did that, they'd have no slaves.
21:17:37 <Lemon> well ours usually are really sweet
21:17:43 <Lemon> but this one, damn I should record it
21:17:45 <Lemon> a demon xd
21:17:57 <Lemon> poor girl, she went through hell actually
21:18:08 <Lemon> I want to call her 364 euros
21:19:38 <steve30> Tell her steve30 says Meow :)
21:19:47 <Lemon> sure will do !
21:20:50 <Lemon> I might have found some nice 100M resistors, 1% ones for pretty cheap
21:23:36 <Lemon> the only non 1 or 0.1% resistors are the 0.1R, for some reasons I cant find better than 5% ones
21:23:53 <Lemon> not a big issue but it bothers me, I even found 1% 0.01R ones
21:26:20 <Lemon> I cant find a 11/12 decade resistor box for sale, 8-9 decades ones with the same values/quality etc are like 5-800 euros+
21:26:28 <Lemon> mine will cost me around 100

21:52:11 <Lord_of_nothing_> haha its insane here you can legally buy weed plans
21:52:19 <Lord_of_nothing_> but smoke them is illegal
21:52:26 <Lemon> same here actually
21:52:55 <Halcyon> Drugs are bad, mmmk
21:53:28 <Lord_of_nothing_> well cbd is not a illegal one
21:53:47 <Lemon> still bad
21:53:50 <Lord_of_nothing_> why?
21:54:06 <Lemon> ho for various reasons, trust me

22:39:53 <canadaguest> weekend hi to all sleepers in here ;)
22:39:54 <canadaguest> hehehe
22:40:04 <Lord_of_nothing_> hello beauty
22:40:04 <EEVBlog> Hello there, Lord_of_nothing_!
22:40:15 <Lord_of_nothing_> Hy Mr. Dave
22:40:24 <steve30> Lord_of_nothing_, England
22:40:35 <Lord_of_nothing_> UK habe just 5% Vat?
22:40:54 <steve30> Some types of product/service are eligible for reduced VAT in some circumstances. most things are 20%
22:41:16 <Lemon> hi canadaboi
22:41:22 <Lord_of_nothing_> We hyes we have 20% to only for food is 10%
22:41:31 <steve30> In this case he invoiced me for standard 20% VAT when it should be 5%, resulting in a bill of £600 too much.
22:42:18 <Lord_of_nothing_> wine have 12% *gg*
22:42:30 <Lord_of_nothing_> beer 10%
22:44:21 <canadaguest> lord_of_nothing I'm lucky for quebec but well lets just say ontario in canada has 15% on nearly everything and that includes bulk food too
22:45:24 <canadaguest> as far as I know from my receipts quebec has a bit of sliding scale for from 5% to 12% but often its the lower end
22:47:48 <Lord_of_nothing_> i dont know does in canada the supermarkes show the price with tax?
22:48:02 <canadaguest> steve30 not quite related to taxes but mind if I ask you something I had been curious about re paying in uk?
22:49:12 <canadaguest> lord_of_nothing its a silly clusterf---k (if its ok to use that word here) as at random you would have one item's pricetag that simply says "2.99" and another item's pricetag that says "9.39 w/tax"
22:49:48 <canadaguest> legally the tax is a separate receipt line but some stores lump it into the shelf prices which is what it really should had been done as
22:51:28 <steve30> canadaguest, sure
22:51:47 <Lord_of_nothing_> thats insane
22:52:32 <canadaguest> lord_of_nothing yeah I don't know why the concept of "taxed separately from the shelf price" ever existed .. it would just be easier to leave the tax IN the shelf price
22:53:01 <Lord_of_nothing_> I know that only from the shop for business the show 2 different price with and without tax
22:53:34 <Lord_of_nothing_> Here in Austria by Law for private custommer the price MUST be with ALL tax include
22:53:49 <canadaguest> steve30 not sure if this in your field or not but mm for uk does one have to pay to be able to process bank cards of any sort?
22:54:32 <canadaguest> lord_of_nothing yeah austria has it right :)
22:55:38 <Ampera> I just bought a new phone.
22:55:48 <steve30> If you're a shop/business who wants to accept card payments, you'd probably have to pay a fee to a company that deals with the card payments.
22:56:01 <steve30> e.g. I can accept card payments via paypal, but paypal will take their cut
22:56:38 <Lord_of_nothing_> i dont know how its in your contry buy there the do its 0,1% - 0,3% for Banc Cards.
22:56:57 <Lord_of_nothing_> creditcars want ~4%
22:57:12 <Lord_of_nothing_> maex and master up to 10%
22:57:34 <canadaguest> steve30 mm well for context in north america the store do have to pay BUT are not ever allowed to in any way directly pass the cost onto customer so guess what happens? all items in store are marked up just a tad bit instead .. a bit of sorta-illegal highway robbery if you ask me
22:58:38 <canadaguest> thankfully many small stores between quebec and new york have long figured out an unofficial way to get around the credit's weird laws .. they simply discount 5-15% from any cash payments verbally :)
22:58:46 <steve30> ah, some places used to charge extra for certain types of payment. e.g. Paying by card would cost the customer an extra £2 or so. But that is not allowed any more. You cannot charge for specific types of payment.
22:59:14 <Lord_of_nothing_> give a discount here is legally to
22:59:21 <canadaguest> so yeah its not much of a surprise that I manage to save more than $100 some months by paying cash at smaller places
22:59:22 <Lord_of_nothing_> but the most just raise the price...
22:59:25 <steve30> You can still say, for example, Minimum spend of £5 for card payments.
23:00:00 <Lord_of_nothing_> its insane for an austrian product you get produce lets say 10km away you pay more than in a german shop 200km away
23:00:53 <canadaguest> steve30 ah yeah some bakeries and other small food stores do seem to have these "minimum $4.50 for cards" and/or "no mastercard sorry!" bold signs taped in front of the cashier
23:03:00 <Lord_of_nothing_> well here its getting more and more the other way the want to ban cash
23:03:10 <Lord_of_nothing_> now because of corona...
23:03:14 <canadaguest> lord_of_nothing this was quite some time ago but lets just say that when the usd=cad exchange rate took a hard crash there was quite a lot of daily news about people trying to shop over the border and again re many being detained for going over the $ limit they were allowed to take etc .. it took a few months for that to finally die down

23:06:05 <canadaguest> lord_of_nothing well I depend on cash and do not have one of these "unlimited transactions at any location" type visa card, thankfully for a temporary time the scotia bank has been willing to waive the 15-cent-per-transaction fee on food and health purchases on the debt account
23:06:31 <canadaguest> but its only temporary .. at some point it'll go back to the usual fees aka back to cash for me
23:07:13 <Lord_of_nothing_> how many cad you pay for your bank account?
23:07:57 <canadaguest> one moment :) .....
23:10:24 <Lord_of_nothing_> i pay arround 10€ - 15€ every 3 month
23:11:20 <Lord_of_nothing_> and when i draw a foreign currency from a partner bank i not even pay so much fees
23:12:33 <canadaguest> per month: flat $2 account fee, free 12 atm transactions, no-fee interac with family/friends, free statement, $1.50 per bill payment ... and then the misc per-use-not-monthly sub-$1 fee for various things like business interac or re paying in store etc
23:14:50 <Lord_of_nothing_> so depend how many transaction you have is not that bad
23:14:57 <canadaguest> I've never ever gone to the atm more than maybe 7-8 times a month in the last several years just as a footnote :)
23:15:52 <Lord_of_nothing_> well i dont know when i was the last time on a atm its be month ago
23:15:54 <canadaguest> you know .. take out $230 there .. several days of spending .. take out $90 to adjust .. several days .. and repeat
23:16:25 <canadaguest> only did have to go to the human teller once a few months ago because of some minor complications not entirely related to cash take-out
23:16:57 <canadaguest> lord_of_nothing yeah I', not surprised the two of us have very different styles
23:23:23 <canadaguest> anyway I meant to ask this this morning so before I forget ...
23:23:48 <Lord_of_nothing_> well i pay everything with my amex since i dont have to pay for the fees
23:24:49 <canadaguest> I was planning to use the 2-prong type of ac connector for my ac-ac supply box but I had to kinda wonder .. if I decided to use a C14 (the type you find on any computer atx psu yeah) instead of C8 type connector .. normally where would I be running the ground wire to on the internal side?
