00:03:15 <rust_collector> yeeez. good little audi. looking at it, it has had an engine swap at some point. good times
00:04:03 <rust_collector> which means you will have all the problems of both engines, lol

02:15:03 <rust_collector> Halcyon, that is a good dinner idea.
02:33:24 <rust_collector> hmm, the whole house stinks of burnt bread
02:34:25 <rust_collector> they tried to heat a baguette in the micro, and it caught on fire. That sounds pretty exciting, but I do not think I have had that happen before. At least not in less than 2 minutes, lol

02:49:47 <rust_collector> oops. it seems like things like to catch fire today
03:02:25 <rust_collector> https://imgur.com/a/thT1uRn
03:02:42 <rust_collector> so.... this is what I have to deal with today
03:15:33 Join: Ysjoelfir ([email protected]) to #EEVblog
03:15:44 <rust_collector> oh really
03:16:02 <rust_collector> well, he is german, after all. what did you expect?
03:16:02 <Ysjoelfir> YEWS:
03:16:06 <Ysjoelfir> yes.
03:16:10 <rust_collector> hmm, hey
03:16:23 <Ysjoelfir> so, those pesky germans again. I hate those
03:16:39 <rust_collector> https://imgur.com/a/thT1uRn
03:16:50 <rust_collector> LOOK! you people made me eat this
03:16:58 <Ysjoelfir> whatever that is, it looks gorgeous
03:17:06 <rust_collector> it is a potato
03:17:40 <Ysjoelfir> I assumed a taco at first, but now I see it
03:17:46 <rust_collector> I would not eat this, if germany never existed
03:17:50 <Ysjoelfir> :P
03:18:32 <rust_collector> but hey, it was free
03:18:44 <Ysjoelfir> so rusty, we are preparing the dough for lördagspizza.what do you suggest as a topping?
03:20:34 <rust_collector> well, pizza topping... I would spread a thick layer of yellow onion, then cover that in wasabi. one spiral of ketchup, then cover it all with cheese, then sprinkle on more cheese
03:21:50 <Ysjoelfir> I hate wasabi
03:21:53 <rust_collector> well, just tomato sauce, mince meat, cheese, cheese cheese peanuts oregano and garlic sliced
03:22:14 <Ysjoelfir> but I want a picture where you eat that first suggestion. and don't forget the corn.
03:22:17 <rust_collector> have you tried real wasabi, or just the euro version,
03:22:30 <Ysjoelfir> the euro version I guess?
03:22:38 <rust_collector> right
03:22:59 <rust_collector> hmm, what is it called again. we say pepperrot. uhm
03:23:19 <rust_collector> anyways... yes, go for the last version then
03:23:46 <Ysjoelfir> its hroseraddish in english
03:23:51 <Ysjoelfir> or Meerrettich in german
03:23:53 <rust_collector> ah, right
03:23:56 <Ysjoelfir> either way, I don't like it^^
03:24:09 <rust_collector> You do not have to snort it...
03:24:57 <Ysjoelfir> No? then how do you consume that? and don't tell me its for anal use?
03:25:15 <rust_collector> I used to use it when I was around 10. but what did I use it on...
03:25:31 <Ysjoelfir> do i want to know?
03:25:51 <rust_collector> As I do not know, i don't know if you want to know
03:27:03 <rust_collector> but, I vote for loads of cheese, and peanuts on top, so they get fried in cheese fat
03:27:21 <rust_collector> ok, new version.
03:28:51 <rust_collector> tomato sauce, torn apart chicken with spicy powder, cheese, cheese, some thin sliced onion here and there, cheese, a light spraying of olive oil, peanuts, more cheese,

03:33:45 <rust_collector> tomorrow is our national day up here. we are going for a hopefully quick bbq-dinner at mominlaw
03:36:56 <Ysjoelfir> is it? :D then enjo
03:36:57 <Ysjoelfir> y
03:37:13 <rust_collector> probably not, but thanks
03:37:59 <rust_collector> otoh, it will be much better than usual, as we are not allowed to force everyone into the yard at school
03:50:57 <rust_collector> ok, the gas struts to flip up the bed in newer scanias fit the rear hatch on a 2002 corolla wagon, if you move the top bracket 12mm, and they are dirt cheap, compared to toyota parts
04:02:32 <Ysjoelfir> nice :) now we would need to have a 2002 corolla
04:02:54 <rust_collector> it could be worse than that
04:03:25 <rust_collector> I wonder how much I have to do to it, to get it thru the health check one more time
04:04:26 <Ysjoelfir> I will see what the TÜV says about my 940 next week
04:04:37 <Ysjoelfir> changed the oil today.
04:04:39 <rust_collector> I am thinking about some small mods to it. maybe a more modern turbo, and some tweaks here and there
04:04:52 <Ysjoelfir> added a bit of oil leak stop
04:05:18 <Ysjoelfir> could you do that in norge? here in good old germania you aren'T allowed to do anything without a shitton of paperwork
04:07:21 <rust_collector> I had a 1987 toyota tercel (which I sort of miss) that failed the emissions test by a lot. So I got it good and hot, and dumped in about 10 liters of methanol in the tank. he passed it, and I could smell the smell of booze all over his shop. he was not happy.
04:09:46 <rust_collector> I can do a lot. I can not change the max power by a lot, but my corolla is a 90 hp version, they also came as 116, and 120-ish, so I can chip it to that, plus 10% or something. But that is the peak power number. if I put a more efficient turbo on it, it will have more power over a wider rpm range, and be more peppy, even if the max power would be about the same
04:10:59 <rust_collector> old style toyota turbos are... well, they are fairly reliable, but also very slow and not very efficient.
04:11:24 <rust_collector> a kkk or garrett designed in the last 30 years would be a nice upgrade
04:14:51 <Ysjoelfir> that sounds reasonable^^
04:16:11 <rust_collector> I sort of like the modern vgt turbos. sure they need a cleaning every few years, but they are just so much more responsive than the old wastegated ones
04:18:24 <rust_collector> oh well, we will see. I have to see if there is enough rust underneath to keep it in one piece until it has passed the test
04:20:27 <rust_collector> do you have a diff brake on yours?
04:25:42 <Ysjoelfir> I have actually no idea. I would love to know though
04:26:03 <Ysjoelfir> As I heard it is written on some label on the axle. Never found that one
04:27:16 <rust_collector> hmm, I do not remember the axle names for the volvos, but iIrc, there was a xx30 axle, and the turbos used the xx31 axle. difference is the open or "locked" diff
04:27:48 <rust_collector> just jack the rear up, and see of both wheels spin the same way or the opposite way?
04:28:19 <Ysjoelfir> I may be missing it, but how does that tell me if its locked?
04:28:59 <rust_collector> if both wheel turn the same way, it is locked. if the other side turns the other way, it is open
04:29:33 <Ysjoelfir> why would it turn to the opposite?
04:29:40 <Ysjoelfir> oh
04:29:46 <Ysjoelfir> I think I get it
04:29:47 <rust_collector> because that is what a differential does
04:30:32 <rust_collector> hmm, was it 1031?
04:30:40 <rust_collector> nah, I can't remember
04:31:22 <rust_collector> it is very close to the dana 30
04:37:27 <rust_collector> the jeep cherokee used the dana 30 in the front, for a long time, you can put a volvo diff in those, with a spacer behind the ring gear, iIrc. or maybe it was the other way around
04:52:23 <rust_collector> I think it is time to test one more polish vodka. this one is dworek. we will see. the last polish one I had was very nice

05:09:22 <Ysjoelfir> linux :X
05:11:45 <rust_collector> ok, I tried something here
05:13:08 <rust_collector> https://pastebin.com/hCqnhCad
05:13:18 <rust_collector> ok, what happened there....
05:13:49 <rust_collector> ok, put it in the art bin
05:16:16 <Ampera> Ysjoelfir, what about Linux
05:16:35 <Ysjoelfir> its a... thing, rusty!
05:16:43 <Ysjoelfir> Ampera - it is linuxy!
05:16:49 <Ampera> what is
05:16:50 <rust_collector> YES! a thing
05:17:02 <rust_collector> linux is
05:18:57 <Ampera> I'm planning on rewriting the EEVBot soon, but I'm mulling over what to implement it in
06:52:19 <Ysjoelfir> I have great ideas for it Ampera
06:52:22 <Ysjoelfir> well, one
06:52:42 <rust_collector> text, and...
06:53:51 <Ysjoelfir> collect timezones in a database and expoand the EEVBlog time function. Also you could let it sometimes say random things like "its late XY, shouldn't you be sleeping?" :D
06:56:15 <rust_collector> hmm, maybe put a calculator in it...
06:56:26 <rust_collector> ok, maybe a calendar
06:56:45 <rust_collector> or... no, don't bother

08:09:37 <rust_collector> i wonder if I should just cut off all my hair. It is not really doing much anyway
08:18:40 <MrMobodies> Hello
08:18:50 <rust_collector> hey!
08:18:54 <MrMobodies> I have a friend who is still on ADSL
08:19:16 <rust_collector> so, he never answers your messages?
08:19:18 <MrMobodies> BT came in to sort the line out, and they gave him a BT Home hub router
08:19:30 <MrMobodies> I like that joke
08:20:00 <MrMobodies> anyway when he plugs his Seagate cloud drive in the network ports, it hangs
08:20:06 <rust_collector> what is that home hub? is it a 3g or 4g router or something?
08:20:24 <MrMobodies> some patronising router designed by BT
08:20:28 <rust_collector> heh
08:20:53 <MrMobodies> a broadband router, by British Telecom
08:21:06 <MrMobodies> but it is very patronising setting it up
08:21:19 <MrMobodies> they make all the easy things difficult but to be fair there are some good things I like
08:21:21 <rust_collector> I do not think I ever used... maybe, but I don't think I did use an adsl line
08:21:30 <MrMobodies> they show all the devices on the front page
08:21:50 <MrMobodies> when it is hooked up on a line controlled BT you get connected
08:22:05 <rust_collector> right
08:22:09 <MrMobodies> but try changing the IP range on a Home hub and it wont let you
08:22:47 <MrMobodies> they put all the good useful stuff in "advanced settings" and Are you sure you wont to go there etc
08:23:44 <rust_collector> well, as it is called a "home hub" I think I can understand why they would try to keep that sort of thing out of the grandma settings
08:24:05 <MrMobodies> yes
08:24:24 <rust_collector> but, in the end, can it do what he needs?
08:24:33 <MrMobodies> doesn't support SYSLOG starting from the first Homehub but there third party 2-WIRE one did
08:24:46 <MrMobodies> no there seems to be problems
08:24:58 <MrMobodies> from his old one line kep ton dropping
08:25:12 <MrMobodies> and the new one hangs (when things are connected to the ethernet ports)
08:25:34 <MrMobodies> I was going to send him an old Draytek through the post
08:25:52 <MrMobodies> but he forgot his details so that will require a call from BT
08:26:04 <rust_collector> so, he can use any..... oh ok, right
08:26:33 <MrMobodies> yes, but no better before the works or change to a new BT homehub
08:26:58 <MrMobodies> He is trying to run a business, but it looks unreliable
08:27:25 <rust_collector> does he have a lot of traffic?
08:27:30 <MrMobodies> no
08:27:35 <MrMobodies> what I tried to do last year was monitor the line but the wife could hear the noises
08:27:58 <MrMobodies> as the loungue has a a wooden fllor
08:28:09 <MrMobodies> and I put rubber there but still
08:28:18 <rust_collector> hmm, I think I might consider using a "phone" modem, just to keep the business going.
08:28:51 <MrMobodies> I offered him a choice, I could provide a HG612 and hookup to the exisiting modem with a red port
08:29:20 <MrMobodies> for the uplink so the modem can monitor the line and if the router hangs it I could see what was happeing
08:29:42 <MrMobodies> To me these things should never happen like that, unless there is a power problem
08:30:57 <MrMobodies> I know 10 years ago there was a Netgear Prosafe vpn wireless router, but everytime I joined my laptop to the wifi, it would gradually stop working
08:31:10 <MrMobodies> this is why I prefer to keep things seperate
08:31:27 <MrMobodies> it was in an office somewhere
08:33:16 <rust_collector> I thought that kind of line was no longer a thing, except maybe in... no, just no longer a thing
08:33:59 <MrMobodies> he is in a village somewhere
08:34:12 <rust_collector> I am pretty annoyed about them shutting down the 3g network stuff up here.
08:34:14 <MrMobodies> I think in Essex I can't remember where abouts, near
08:34:30 <MrMobodies> oh dear no 3G
08:34:31 <rust_collector> village somewhere, yes, but it is not in botswana, right?
08:34:37 <MrMobodies> I still have 3G in my area
08:34:40 <MrMobodies> no 4G
08:34:46 <MrMobodies> in England
08:34:49 <rust_collector> I do too, but not next year
08:34:56 <MrMobodies> I think in Roding
08:35:04 <MrMobodies> near Fyfields
08:35:40 <rust_collector> i thin kit is weird that it still exist, except in... maybe albania or something
08:36:28 <rust_collector> So, I am halfway looking for a 4g modem for laptops. just so I can keep using the damn thing, when I am not at home
08:36:49 <MrMobodies> Britain seems to be behind in a lot things in the South East
08:37:05 <rust_collector> weird
08:37:05 <MrMobodies> very few places with gigabit
08:37:31 <MrMobodies> in my old area they're offering Gfast 300mbps
08:37:48 <MrMobodies> but for double the price of what I paid 5 years ago
08:38:08 <rust_collector> well, I guess that is not ideal, but I think most people would not really need gigabit?
08:38:32 <MrMobodies> In Yorkshire I heard this is a gigabit connectivity up there
08:38:39 <MrMobodies> but it is not that as the issue
08:38:55 <MrMobodies> before I left I was getting los of packet loss at the same time on both lines
08:39:02 <MrMobodies> I'd report it, Bt says it is fixed
08:39:13 <MrMobodies> a week later the packet loss return sand gets worse and worse
08:39:46 <MrMobodies> I asked this keeps on happening "please ask BT how was it fixed?"
08:39:51 <MrMobodies> they refused to say
08:40:05 <MrMobodies> unlike when someone put a nail in the post they were honest about that one
08:40:35 <MrMobodies> also they were building lots and lots of houses so I think maybe due to over utilization
08:40:37 <rust_collector> I am pretty happy with my isp at the moment. Our old "modem-router" thing was a bit flakey, so finally, they sent a guy with a new box, and they gave us an upgrade from a 100 line (our old box could only handle 80) to 500, it really is noticeable, when I...say download an iso or something
08:40:42 <MrMobodies> if there isn't a fault in the cabint
08:41:00 <MrMobodies> that's nice
08:41:18 <MrMobodies> 100mbps line to 500mbps
08:41:23 <rust_collector> yeah, if you split the line out to enough places, I guess there is not much left
08:41:43 <rust_collector> yes, and we got it for the same price as the old deal
08:42:04 <MrMobodies> I paying about the same as i did 5 years ago, with a different company
08:42:21 <MrMobodies> but I got other stuff in the package like, international calls, 16 static ips per line
08:42:36 <MrMobodies> I have lines 50- 60mbps each same as before
08:42:45 <rust_collector> I mean, for my use, the 100 line, running at 80, was enough. But it is pretty nice, when I can download some distro in a few seconds
08:43:15 <MrMobodies> 500mbps or about 50 megabytes 6 seconds for a 600mb ce
08:44:05 <MrMobodies> the line seems pretty stable
08:44:27 <MrMobodies> but I when I did my checks in this area some were only getting 20-30mbps adsl
08:45:01 <MrMobodies> I thought I was going to get that but to my surprise they told me the line can do 76mbps but it is really 50 -60 sometimes it may go up and down
08:45:34 <MrMobodies> by the time they bring out fibre, I think I'd be dead buried and gone.
08:46:02 <MrMobodies> that friend only gets 4mbps ADSL
08:46:12 <rust_collector> perfect
08:46:22 <MrMobodies> his 4G modem is faster
08:46:51 <MrMobodies> I was about say they have some unlimited deals why not purchase a sim
08:47:04 <MrMobodies> buy a good modem, and mount an antenna somewhere
08:47:22 <MrMobodies> he has a little EE square modem
08:47:33 <rust_collector> yes, I think they are trying to get everyone over to the mobile network things now. i am not sure why, but I guess having just one network to deal with is cheaper for them
08:47:34 <MrMobodies> and i saw that doing 40mbps
08:47:55 <rust_collector> 40 is...ok, I guess
08:48:15 <MrMobodies> he has an allowance but I see unlimited sims there
08:49:07 <MrMobodies> that might be a good solution for state of his broadband
08:49:29 <rust_collector> I still wonder if I should take the dog hair trimmer thing, and swoosh my hair off
08:49:39 <rust_collector> yes, that could be good
08:49:51 <MrMobodies> Maybe you could clean it first
08:49:55 <MrMobodies> with alcohol
08:50:05 <MrMobodies> that's what I'd dpo
08:50:23 <MrMobodies> the next doors neighboor dog ran towards me today
08:50:27 <rust_collector> well, i am not worried about that, but yes.
08:50:37 <MrMobodies> it was bashing against me
08:50:38 <rust_collector> I just wonder if I would like not having hair
08:50:40 <MrMobodies> licking me all over
08:50:56 <MrMobodies> with like a bald head?
08:51:12 <rust_collector> not entirely bald, but very short
08:51:24 <MrMobodies> personally I would like get rid of all my hair apart from my head
08:51:35 <MrMobodies> they grow out and itch me terrible
08:51:45 <rust_collector> my hair is creeping up/back pretty fast.
08:52:00 <rust_collector> I do not really care about the rest of my hair
08:52:02 <MrMobodies> I heard others pulling them out
08:52:09 <MrMobodies> but I am not sure if they grow back
08:52:27 <rust_collector> most of them probably would
08:53:20 <rust_collector> I guess I am just moderately hairy. yes, I have hair on my toes, but on average, not much
08:54:26 <rust_collector> it also annoys me to shave, so I in general do not. but it is annoying
08:59:58 <rust_collector> anyway, "today" or tomorrow, sunday, is the national day up here. it is one of the days I am pretty happy about this virus thing, as I do not "have to" go down to the school, and get a headache with all the people
09:00:21 <rust_collector> I really do not deal well with crowds
09:00:38 <Ampera> Ysjoelfir, I have plenty of ideas for it, I just need to find the time (and effort) to implement them. Perhaps I'll build it in C++
09:01:20 <Ampera> I've been using and sort of liking C# recently, but I don't want to have to deal with mono and the fat stack of dependencies it requires, and development on it outside of Windows gets a bit foreign to me.
09:01:31 <Ampera> I was also thinking about trying out Go, but I might just stick to C++
09:03:09 <rust_collector> Ampera, not that I know much about those things, but I would go for either c++ or go, before c#.
09:03:46 <rust_collector> (I know almost nothing at all about those things)
09:03:57 <Ampera> It's currently written in Java, because I was lazy and wanted it to work, but I plan to do a bit of machine learning, so I want to have some more power to expand into
09:06:10 <rust_collector> i just believe (And I could be wrong) that c++ will do anything you might want an irc bot to do? I only sort of do not dislike the idea of using go, because of this guy that work on the go project
09:06:58 <rust_collector> I do have some issues with that danish guy... go for go, just because
09:07:57 <Ampera> C++ will have the best performance out of the lot of them, but still has decent string management (unlike C)
09:08:13 <Ampera> It's also about libraries, because it needs to have a decent IRC library and Twitter API library
09:08:14 <Ampera> which C++ does have
09:08:31 <MrMobodies> Rust collector the same with the supermarkets, they know *look* where they're going
09:08:34 <rust_collector> It just annoys me, when someone says something critical about c++, and the dane says "it is just you who do not understand"
09:09:09 <Ampera> Whenever I use C++ it's because I am not that great with C and I'm not happy about that fact
09:09:26 <Ampera> but I'm learning more and more that it doesn't really matter and I should just suck it up and use what works, even if I wish it was something else
09:09:38 <rust_collector> yes
09:10:15 <rust_collector> having a thing work is probably higher up on my list, that "staying pure"
09:10:20 <rust_collector> or something
09:10:57 <rust_collector> I wish I had a brain that understood how this programming thing works.
09:11:16 <Ampera> rust_collector, I'm afraid you only get one by working hard at it
09:11:19 <rust_collector> But, otoh, that is why we have people like you
09:11:28 <Ampera> It takes great commitment and patience
09:11:40 <MrMobodies> Patience is what i lack the most
09:11:55 <Ampera> I've been told I have an incredible amount of it
09:12:19 <MrMobodies> that's nice you're patient
09:12:24 <rust_collector> well, yes. I am sure I could learn. I tend to get distracted, and i have other things to do. But it is a thing I wish I would get more into
09:12:46 <MrMobodies> I get distracted too where it holds me back
09:13:13 <MrMobodies> my concentration is very poor
09:13:17 <Ampera> I think, especially in these days, patience is a virtue in scarce quantity, and in high demand, more than any other resource.
09:13:18 <rust_collector> I mean, I think I can make almost any language you can think of say "hello world" but why would I want to do that?
09:13:37 <rust_collector> I think you are pretty much correct.
09:14:03 <MrMobodies> I had a few patient people who taught me stuff, and i left with something.
09:14:41 <MrMobodies> I am patient with certain things but I tend to be impatient with things I do not understand, or can't see how it works.
09:14:49 <rust_collector> but otoh, especially in these days, people want results right now, so they do not have time to train you. sure they will take on people, and teach them, but they need all the papers, and 10 years experience
09:15:05 <MrMobodies> do not have time to train you see true
09:15:23 <MrMobodies> oops is so true
09:16:21 <MrMobodies> I have been in a few places where I beieve "stress" is not being fully equipped
09:16:32 <MrMobodies> and they lie their way through the contracts to get work
09:16:52 <MrMobodies> I am glad I don't have a contract working in those places
09:16:56 <EEVBlog> New EEVBlog Tweet: Either: 1) all my subscribers have completely abandoned my channel, 2) Youtube video analytics is broken. or 3) The Youtube notification system is now 100% broken. Video released 15min ago and virtually no views. https://t.co/3WOma3gznX
09:17:21 <MrMobodies> Abandon Dave Jones, no way.
09:17:34 <MrMobodies> Oh new video lets see
09:17:39 <rust_collector> Now, I am not in a field of work anywhere near needing to even use a computer, but that is the feeling I get for most skills. you either get in, because the government will pay part of your wages, when you are "trained" or you have to have 3-5-10 years of experience to get in
09:18:35 <MrMobodies> in my old county, they had no support for people like me
09:18:35 <rust_collector> well, unless you know someone "inside"
09:18:46 <MrMobodies> they just lumber us in a charity
09:18:56 <EEVBlog> New EEVBlog Tweet: NEW EEVblog Video! EEVblog #1306 (4 of 5): 3 Cent Micro - SDCC C Compiler https://t.co/Tc8ZHGDHzP
09:19:00 <MrMobodies> where they try to get us on the job market without any access to training
09:19:13 <MrMobodies> that's why I moved
09:20:02 <MrMobodies> I told them youngsters, yes they just left school, "in 10 years time you may find you'll still be here or a place like it"
09:20:09 <MrMobodies> that was in 2018
09:20:35 <rust_collector> i want to visit england-land some day. i probably do not want to live there, but it would be interesting to see
09:20:43 <MrMobodies> I was put into work experience, they were happy with me only to do be told, oh "you do not have the qualifications to do that work"
09:21:15 <rust_collector> I have been there, except that i never went outside the fence, so I was more or less still in france, lol
09:21:18 <MrMobodies> and to do the qualifications they require I need other qualifications that are not offered in the county I was living, hence no ladders to reach
09:21:35 <MrMobodies> In Romford there board outside, advertising jobs
09:21:48 <MrMobodies> £40,000 software developer, and it had been there for years
09:21:57 <EEVBlog> New EEVBlog Tweet: BTW, it's always worked before. I sit there after I release a video and watch the live stats (and answer comments etc). After 5-10 minutes you can tell how popular the video is going to be based on the initial per-minute views.
09:22:05 <MrMobodies> but the others jobs changed on it. Blue triangle trainign I think
09:22:46 <rust_collector> 40k?
09:22:48 <rust_collector> heh
09:22:49 <MrMobodies> I was told in Essex by the Job place that they only do RETAIL work
09:22:50 <MrMobodies> yes
09:22:55 <MrMobodies> and it has been there for many many years
09:23:02 <rust_collector> I hope it has, lol
09:23:04 <MrMobodies> but all the other jobs changed
09:23:13 <MrMobodies> on the board I mean
09:23:22 <MrMobodies> maybe they couldn't find someonme
09:23:45 <rust_collector> I guess our economy here is different to yours, but I make more than 40k as a truck driver for the postal service here
09:23:54 <MrMobodies> the local colleges have booklets where they advertise many courses, but many of them don't run
09:24:14 <MrMobodies> £40,000 pound a year
09:24:35 <MrMobodies> many people I know earn a tiny fraction
09:24:38 <rust_collector> yes, the courses do not exist, at least until there is enough people to have a class?
09:24:39 <MrMobodies> and then they get taxed
09:25:07 <rust_collector> oh, I make somewhere around 40k, after taxes
09:25:15 <MrMobodies> not enough people and teacher i think
09:25:27 <MrMobodies> that's very fortunate
09:25:38 <MrMobodies> in England you get taxed, left right and centre
09:25:53 <MrMobodies> for about everything unless dealing with cash
09:26:11 <rust_collector> it is not bad, for my kind of work, but i would assume a programmer guy would make more than a truck driver
09:26:15 <MrMobodies> they tax the wages, one good thing is national insurance for hospital care
09:26:24 <rust_collector> yes, same as here
09:26:38 <MrMobodies> that is interesting
09:26:45 <rust_collector> the income tax... is around 36-38 %
09:26:46 <MrMobodies> at my at in the charity thrre
09:26:57 <MrMobodies> they were looking for technicians for simple things
09:27:09 <MrMobodies> basic stuff, and wante dto pay like £7.50 an hour
09:27:29 <MrMobodies> but wanted so many qualification and degrees in things that didn;t matter to the job descriptiob
09:27:51 <rust_collector> but then you have vat on things, and all kinds of other taxes for allthethings, so I thing that you are close to 50% taxes, when you are done
09:28:18 <MrMobodies> yes I know of a teacher who was taxed 40%
09:28:33 <MrMobodies> I think they are after a certain group of people
09:28:40 <rust_collector> yes, we have "free" healthcare, and things. I have used that twice.
09:28:49 <MrMobodies> people out of university who owes a lot of tuition fees
09:29:09 <MrMobodies> free healthcare reailly in England is paid by national insurance
09:29:28 <MrMobodies> I think they are looking for those people to lock them in, pay them less,
09:29:57 <rust_collector> well, yes, in the end, you do pay. but healthcare and school is "free"
09:30:08 <MrMobodies> but there are the same kind of jobs on Kent or Cambridge or up further than don't require all that
09:30:36 <MrMobodies> The taxes are great when it works
09:30:43 <rust_collector> I am so happy I got by with out any kind of loan to get my education.
09:30:49 <MrMobodies> at the moment elderly are required to pay for their care in are homes
09:31:03 <rust_collector> heh, the education, that I do not even use
09:31:04 <MrMobodies> I think thatis the best thing, education with no loan
09:31:16 <MrMobodies> so you an concentrate on it
09:31:38 <MrMobodies> not worry about putting energy into making money to satisfy others
09:33:07 <MrMobodies> I am not going to pay £9,000 a year, one i cannot afford that and two, most of the places cannot provide the support i need
09:33:20 <rust_collector> no. I was just cheap. I did not concentrate on it at all. it was all common sense stuff I was trained in, you just have a guy show you how stuff works. but I had an issue with "the system" because we was required to have language and religion, and stuff classes, when all we were supposed to do, was to blow up the earth, and make roads and stuff
09:33:22 <MrMobodies> but I hear they can up here where I moved without the tuition fees
09:34:43 <rust_collector> But, I had fun, I guess everyone get to run bulldozers and blow up things in school
09:35:14 <rust_collector> mm, or not
09:35:17 <MrMobodies> Jasper Carrot: It'll be the first time the BBC lets someone in without a pass, the Bulldozer.
09:35:32 <MrMobodies> that is the BBC television centre that was sold off to developers in 2013
09:36:03 <rust_collector> the... oh... uhm, broadcast house, was it?
09:36:27 <rust_collector> It had a name, I think
09:36:40 <MrMobodies> yes and some parts of the BBC
09:36:47 <MrMobodies> they knocked down
09:40:45 <rust_collector> i have a difficult time trying to figure out if I like these big broadcasters, or not. i do listen to the world service, when I work nights. I like a lot of their stuff. and the bbc did make a lot of nice documentaries... It is the same here. we have the nrk, the norwegian bbc, they also have a lot of ok stuff, and they have made some very good things... But I do not trust either of them now. i think most journalists either have their
09:40:46 <rust_collector> own agenda, or they are pushed over to the left, because that is where everyone they work with is
09:41:38 <MrMobodies> I don't trust the media
09:42:09 <MrMobodies> read something out of the Daily Mail and then a different newspaper to find out what they left out in a story.
09:42:16 <rust_collector> In my opinion, they should write about what has happened, and if xxx said yyy, not like it is now, when they seem to make their own story, about what they think is going to happen
09:42:43 <MrMobodies> In 2001, at a training centre, you know Newspaper are corrupted? No.
09:42:44 <rust_collector> well... daily fail... I do not see that as anything to do with journalism at all
09:43:00 <MrMobodies> "Yes they are, they can't even get the football scores right"
09:43:11 <MrMobodies> they were showing me some footsball scores.
09:43:28 <MrMobodies> I said "Well what about the Independent?" Nope it corrupt as well.
09:43:43 <rust_collector> "at one time, one of the teams scored a goal, I think"
09:43:50 <rust_collector> maybe more?
09:43:57 <rust_collector> maybe both?
09:44:08 <rust_collector> you should have been there!
09:44:25 <MrMobodies> well they were showing theses scores and they were actually different
09:44:32 <MrMobodies> I am not into sport but
09:45:03 <MrMobodies> I was surprised how the scores from the same match could vary
09:45:20 <rust_collector> I put organized sport, in the same box as religious communities
09:45:20 <MrMobodies> might have changed now but I don't real the sports bit
09:45:43 <MrMobodies> without all those horrible adverts that flash all around the pitch
09:45:49 <MrMobodies> I wonder how so many people put up with it
09:46:29 <MrMobodies> they pay a lot of money to see the match and have advert screens surrounding the field, on the grass, on the shirts everythwere
09:46:38 <rust_collector> it is very wrong, when you make more than your prime minister, by playing ball
09:46:58 <rust_collector> Not that I am a huge fan of prime ministers... but...
09:47:18 <rust_collector> organized sports would be banned in my country
09:47:23 <MrMobodies> I see it is happening in schools, colleges, univerisities, NHS hosiptals, councils
09:47:36 <MrMobodies> when they earn more than the PM
09:48:14 <rust_collector> well, if they do something important, sure, get paid a lot... it is only money, but to play ball?
09:50:17 <rust_collector> i am very pro playing ball... for fun. it should not be a job
09:52:15 <rust_collector> imo, same as the religious thing. why should we trust some guy, that got a job, being "the voice of god" he is guy that got a job. sure, he could be a great guy, but still just some guy.
09:52:18 <MrMobodies> I know a friend who like doing it
09:52:28 <rust_collector> well, that is great.
09:52:40 <MrMobodies> he trained up in Wallsal
09:52:45 <MrMobodies> walsall sorry
09:53:07 <MrMobodies> he started in 1999 but in 2013 they let him go
09:53:08 <rust_collector> tell him to have fun, and rusty approves of him having fun.
09:53:11 <MrMobodies> for someone ypunger
09:53:33 <MrMobodies> what I like about him, he use to trip players up
09:53:51 <MrMobodies> and had an innocement smirk on his face
09:53:56 <rust_collector> My point, it that playing ball, should not be a profession at all. it is completely insane
09:53:59 <MrMobodies> to me like a blank crt screen
09:54:09 <rust_collector> haha
09:54:09 <MrMobodies> they trained him up
09:54:13 <MrMobodies> he was from Kenya
09:54:21 <MrMobodies> very tall I shared a room with him in 2000
09:54:29 <MrMobodies> he had a twin brother
09:54:39 <MrMobodies> who player volley ball stuff
09:54:51 <MrMobodies> but he is in trouble and on the run and i think that's when he might have left
09:55:01 <rust_collector> heh. ok
09:55:11 <MrMobodies> I think it was Taiwo Atieno
09:55:22 <rust_collector> mmmm, ok
09:56:07 <rust_collector> if it was taivo atieno, he might be from finland. but the w messes that up
09:56:25 <MrMobodies> https://i2-prod.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/incoming/article752033.ece/ALTERNATES/s810/C_71_Articles_135586_BodyWeb_Detail_0_Image.jpg
09:56:40 <MrMobodies> he was very goot at that
09:57:01 <MrMobodies> it makes me laugh when I see footage when he trips someone up and gets away with it
09:57:21 <rust_collector> sure, plenty of people are great at sports. but I still think sports should not exist as a job
09:58:32 <MrMobodies> I wonder since when was it turned into a job
09:59:51 <rust_collector> kid #1 had a poster of liverpool fc from I think 1984 and it looked like it was mostly british people there back then. so I guess it was some times in the mid 70's
10:01:06 <MrMobodies> I remember him playing videos a footballer from Africa
10:01:24 <MrMobodies> I can't remember his name but I think he played for many decades since the 60's
10:01:28 <rust_collector> i do wonder why kid #1 had a poster from 1984....
10:01:31 <MrMobodies> he just like playing
10:01:49 <MrMobodies> the name sounded like Pirelli
10:01:55 <rust_collector> yeah, I think they used to have jobs and stuff back then
10:02:40 <MrMobodies> but it was sad they let him go but had trouble with his brother
10:03:07 <MrMobodies> his brother was suppose to sell someone jewellery and he took the money
10:03:18 <MrMobodies> and i think that was when stopped and last spoke ot him
10:03:40 <MrMobodies> but it was nice he played because he wanted to, he enjoyed it
10:04:11 <MrMobodies> but I like watch to see how many times he gets away with the tripping up players and taking the ball.
10:04:16 <rust_collector> I would fucking enjoy it, if I had a months wages each day
10:04:59 <MrMobodies> I am not sure how much he got paid, I think tey said he was loan from different clubs
10:04:59 <rust_collector> by all means, they do a lot of work, and they do wear out quickly... but IT IS NOT AN IMPORTANT JOB!!!!
10:05:30 <rust_collector> nah, I am in general talking about the top guys
10:05:40 <rust_collector> they are paid waay too much
10:05:40 <MrMobodies> I know they paid a lot
10:06:55 <rust_collector> i vote for cricket, looong before football. but it is the same idea as with go ot c or c++ or c# i don't know anything about them
10:08:08 <rust_collector> I might actually vote for the pervy religious leader, long before any sports thing
10:08:33 <MrMobodies> I find I like to do things by interest
10:08:43 <MrMobodies> if there is a purpose too
10:08:58 <MrMobodies> I concentrate and just focus on that as longas it takes
10:09:07 <MrMobodies> as long as I know what I am doing and what to expect
10:09:50 <MrMobodies> if I am not interested ever in a certain I don't seem to perform well unless it was to achieve something
10:10:13 <MrMobodies> but then I don't have as much energy as I use to and fall tired quicky when I am lost and no help
10:11:05 <MrMobodies> things are a little better, I just have to search for stuff but not back many decades ago
10:11:44 <MrMobodies> I am conserving me energy for when an opportunity does come up, one I know that will work for me.
10:12:00 <rust_collector> Doing things you like is great, if you can get by by doing them
10:12:24 <MrMobodies> learning by doing
10:12:37 <MrMobodies> I have to see the practical and theory at the same time
10:12:57 <MrMobodies> or tend to happen, "you have the tools but don't know how to use them"
10:13:13 <MrMobodies> when I learn the theory "you know it but don't how to apply it"
10:13:26 <MrMobodies> so now i make sure they are not split up
10:13:27 <rust_collector> hmm, I think I am sort of similar. I can read, and it makes sense just as i read it, but i still do not know how to use that
10:14:16 <MrMobodies> I do pick up from other people when I see what they're doing
10:14:23 <MrMobodies> and it makes so much more sense
10:14:39 <MrMobodies> but after I ask questions when they are in the process of doing stuff
10:15:21 <rust_collector> but, I am not a theory kind of person. I am a simple mechanical sort of guy. i can see how a thing works, and if it does not work, I can in general get it working again. but creating a thing that works, form some theory, is not easy
10:16:21 <rust_collector> which is why I think i do not get programming, because I am not sure about how exactly it works
10:16:35 <MrMobodies> a theoretical person could be directing the work and without your pratical or precision it may turn out to be perfect.
10:16:56 <MrMobodies> oops "without" I mean with... sorry
10:17:17 <MrMobodies> sometimes i type the wrong wor
10:17:31 <rust_collector> heh, well, yes.
10:17:46 <MrMobodies> A therotical person, and a pratical person working on something could make perfect things easily
10:18:10 <rust_collector> but some times the theory people do things for reasons I do not see. which would make my fix backfire
10:18:19 <MrMobodies> the pratical does all the work and theoretical person directs according to the measurements
10:18:29 <MrMobodies> aaha
10:18:35 <rust_collector> yes, if they fot together, sure
10:18:40 <rust_collector> fit
10:18:42 <MrMobodies> they may not tell you everything
10:19:01 <rust_collector> in general, they tell me nothing at all, lol
10:19:45 <MrMobodies> that's a shame, then it'll be a lack of communication
10:21:17 <rust_collector> Knowing the theory guy is an important part for me. i try to talk to xxx person, and if we can work together, it tends to work great. if he wants to be mr boss man, he usually has to make a new set of plans, just because of... yes, lack of communication
10:22:42 <rust_collector> i guess I am lucky, in that I in general work with the same people all the time, so we have a sort of understanding. so it tends to work ok
10:23:00 <rust_collector> i should probably find a different job, lol
10:23:04 <MrMobodies> talking of patience maybe they are the patient ones
10:23:40 <MrMobodies> it's nice when someone can have many different jobs during the week
10:23:50 <MrMobodies> not stuck to one place all week
10:24:16 <MrMobodies> oh and yes doing the same thing.... oh you said about you were getting bored some days afo
10:24:35 <rust_collector> well, yes. but I think, that these days, you are just too busy with that one thing, so you just have to do that, I guess
10:25:18 <rust_collector> heh, yes. but every job does get boring when you have done it for some time
10:27:44 <MrMobodies> my boredom use to be getting up to go back to sleep but there is so much more in this village
10:27:44 <rust_collector> I actually really enjoy the days when the internet does not work, or somehting like that, because it is just a little bit different. I can do my part just fine, as long as my truck runs. They just have to call, and tell me what to do. Buuuut, when i come to work, and all the office people are busy making cakes and stuff, in the lunch room, I know it will be an either very slow, or a very busy day
10:29:22 <MrMobodies> I like the busy day
10:29:48 <rust_collector> yes. i do not like having too mush time off. much more than a week, and i just exist. I wake up, eat, take a shit, and go to bed. every day is the same. so in that way, going to work is great.
10:29:51 <MrMobodies> I haven't had any in such a long time apart from the day I moved
10:30:53 <rust_collector> I do like a busy day. but not every day. same with the slow day. they are nice, every now and then, but not every day.
10:31:02 <rust_collector> a little bit of random is good
10:31:51 <rust_collector> but if I had to choose, I guess a day where I have time, but do not have to stress( like I would) would be ideal
10:32:13 <rust_collector> but still enough work to stay busy-ish
10:32:38 <MrMobodies> work that is not too busy or overwhelming
10:32:46 <rust_collector> heh, that was a weird sentence8s)
10:33:14 <MrMobodies> sorry I do speak a bit strange attimes
10:33:19 <rust_collector> yes. I do actually like the super busy days, some times
10:33:24 <MrMobodies> when people are busy in my old srea
10:33:32 <MrMobodies> they don't have enough tine to eat, lket alone think
10:33:42 <rust_collector> that is a thing
10:34:15 <MrMobodies> they are so overwhelmed with stuff they're all over the place. panicking
10:34:42 <MrMobodies> but nice to be busy, be able to think, and make things move without the stress.
10:34:49 <rust_collector> my main rule, is that when I am ready to drive, i go fill my coffee cup, and think of what i want to do when. it seems to work ok
10:35:27 <MrMobodies> Joke: you are in control of your coffee cup, not the other way round.
10:36:00 <MrMobodies> not taken on by urges of other people or demand I mean
10:36:24 <rust_collector> I do not stress. no one will die if I do not deliver my stuff on time. If that was a thing, #1 i would know about it, and #2 they would send a van with the important thing straight there
10:37:15 <rust_collector> if they plan for me to deliver "thing" at 10, and i start work around 11, that is not really my problem
10:38:44 <MrMobodies> wouldn't that be similiar to overtime where they pay you more if for delivering earlier
10:39:15 <rust_collector> if they tell me to go deliver it at 10, yes. I would write that as overtime
10:39:50 <rust_collector> if they just assume I would notice, and somehow deliver at 10, they would just be wrong
10:40:35 <rust_collector> well, it would be overtime, unless it also means I finish earlier
10:40:36 <MrMobodies> and they would notnotice.. "not part of my job description"
10:41:07 <rust_collector> te office people where I work are masters at "not my job"
10:42:14 <rust_collector> I guess I get around it, to some degree, because I have been there for a while, but... i do not think any of them know exactly how is supposed to do what, lol
10:43:02 <MrMobodies> do they go to one another "Not my job" "you do it" and then onto the next person?
10:43:33 <rust_collector> So, In november. he 20th... i have to sit down and think about if I want to stay there, or find something else to do
10:44:10 Quit: Ysjoelfir ([email protected]) Connection closed
10:44:29 <MrMobodies> I see, it's not easy finding other work because you are busy working there?
10:44:38 <rust_collector> it only goes down to a certain level. there is always "the new guy" that gets blamed, if he does something, it was not his job. if he does not do somehting he was supposed to
10:45:53 <MrMobodies> reminds me of a place once visited
10:46:11 <rust_collector> well, there is a bit of security in having been there this long. there are like... uhm, I think 50 people that would be fired before i have to go. so that is a thing. and i do sort of like the job, even if it gets boring now and then
10:46:13 <MrMobodies> if you told the manager, you hated something, she'd give you more
10:46:32 <MrMobodies> 50 people fired?
10:46:45 <rust_collector> last in, first out
10:46:58 <Ampera> I have orderd hamborgar
10:47:11 <MrMobodies> with cheese?
10:47:25 <rust_collector> i have been there for 14.5 years now. most people ame after me
10:47:30 <rust_collector> came
10:47:46 <MrMobodies> my dad use to work for ADT
10:48:05 <MrMobodies> and they use to sack a lot of the young engineers as they were in financial trouble some years ago
10:48:06 <rust_collector> ooh, I have a cheeseburger after work. I have not had one... at least not this year
10:48:33 <MrMobodies> he went to retire, they were offering retirement pay extra but they didn't want him to leave
10:48:41 <MrMobodies> they were sacking all the young engineers
10:48:47 <Ampera> MrMobodies, cheese, bacon, and mushrooms
10:48:57 <rust_collector> eeeewwwwww!!!!
10:49:10 <rust_collector> mushrooms!??!??!!
10:49:14 <rust_collector> that is
10:49:16 <Ampera> mushrooms, grilled mushrooms
10:49:18 <MrMobodies> I like the bacon and cheede but mushroom isn't my ything
10:49:20 <Ampera> delicious
10:49:21 <rust_collector> vitamins and stuff
10:49:29 <Ampera> don't worry, it's Five Guys
10:49:41 <MrMobodies> bacheese bacon
10:49:41 <Ampera> there is literally a negative nutritional value in their food
10:49:42 <MrMobodies> oops
10:49:49 <rust_collector> ah, perfect
10:49:51 <rust_collector> go on
10:49:52 <Ampera> I also ordered 75lbs of fries
10:49:58 <rust_collector> lol
10:50:01 <Ampera> they fry them in peanut oil, they're delicious
10:50:06 <Ampera> a small is about 10lbs of potatoes
10:50:09 <rust_collector> really?
10:50:10 <Ampera> medium is 25lbs
10:50:12 <Ampera> large is 50
10:50:17 <Ampera> so I ordered a large and medium
10:50:20 <MrMobodies> peaonut oil.. sounds nice
10:50:27 <Ampera> one for half the street, the other for the other half
10:51:18 <rust_collector> i should get peanut oil, for my experiments.
10:51:18 <MrMobodies> 11 Kilos of chips?
10:51:32 <MrMobodies> that's a lot
10:51:39 <rust_collector> 75 lbs is like 30+ kg
10:52:19 <MrMobodies> ah I see, Ampera is cooking for the whole street.
10:52:34 <MrMobodies> A street party maybe?
10:52:49 <rust_collector> ooh, that is an idea
10:53:05 <rust_collector> i think I will have a street bbq
10:53:29 <MrMobodies> the peanut oil sounds nice to me on bbq ribs
10:53:39 <MrMobodies> given me a idea for next time
10:53:42 <Ampera> if you knew Five Guys you'd know what I'm on about
10:53:48 <rust_collector> I will just plop some benches in the neighbors drive, and some notes in the letterboxes
10:54:17 <MrMobodies> I heard they were a restauarant but that's all
10:54:24 <rust_collector> Ampera, I have no idea, but it sounds like it is worse than mcdonalds
10:54:57 <rust_collector> but, if it is tasty... eeeh, it could still be better tham mcdonalds
10:54:58 <MrMobodies> https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/f5/Five_Guys_cheeseburger.jpg
10:55:12 <MrMobodies> unhealthy but tasty
10:55:30 <rust_collector> what?
10:55:50 <rust_collector> bread, veg, veg, veg, cheese half a meat, bread...
10:55:58 <rust_collector> how bad can it be
10:55:58 <MrMobodies> well the sallad bit is healthy
10:56:24 <MrMobodies> should cancel the bottom bit out so I suppsose that's alright
10:56:26 <rust_collector> everything is healthy, to some degree
10:56:55 <Ampera> rust_collector, they are miraculously tasty
10:57:19 <Ampera> also I am an idiot, I set chromium-vaapi on to compile, but did it over ssh and forgot to use screen
10:57:24 <Ampera> so now I have to have my laptop sit there until it's done
10:57:43 <Ampera> which, in fairness, shouldn't take long, because this 3950X is fucking awesome at compiling things
10:57:58 <rust_collector> i like that people eat tons of bananas, because they have a lot of potassium, which is supposed to help "neutralize" salt... which may be true. but there is a lot more potassium in potatoes
10:58:35 <rust_collector> YAAY!
10:58:51 <rust_collector> hmm, are you also one of the screen users?
10:59:14 <rust_collector> does the arch stuff use the screen that splits both ways?
11:00:50 <Ampera> rust_collector, I'm not a heavy user, I use it to keep my terminals alive in the background
11:00:57 <rust_collector> right
11:01:36 <rust_collector> I went with tmux. Just because it was so much smaller, and I do not use many of the features anyway
11:03:32 <rust_collector> and, well, when I chose it, screen in debian did not do the vertical split, without a patch. and I like vs
11:04:18 <Ampera> If I need multiple terminals on one display I just use X
11:05:08 <rust_collector> yes,
11:06:11 <rust_collector> I almost always use x anyway. if someone made a browser, that did modern websites well, that did not need x, I would probably not have x
11:06:43 <rust_collector> I am not nerdy enough these days, to even try
11:07:15 <rust_collector> but it is almost just the browser I use, that needs x
11:08:01 <rust_collector> but, with these modern machines, running x is not much of an issue. i am just lazy
11:08:44 <rust_collector> hmm i should look at how that... not x project is coming along
11:08:55 <rust_collector> wth was it called again?
11:09:01 <rust_collector> wayland?
11:09:46 <rust_collector> last time I looked into it, it was supposed to run "in parallel" with x, but now, I am not sure?
11:11:50 <rust_collector> I did he no-X thing for some time, but I did miss a regular browser
11:12:15 <Ampera> rust_collector, it was never intended to run in parallel to X, it was intended to replace it
11:12:38 <Ampera> what it does have is XWayland which is a compatibility layer so X programs can run on Wayland. It's just not a very good one.
11:12:47 <Ampera> Wayland in general is woefully undercooked and terribly supported
11:13:28 <rust_collector> yes, at the start it was, then, he figured it was too difficult, so it still needed x, but now, I think he is back to completely replacing x again
11:13:52 <rust_collector> but... it has been a whie since I looked at it
11:14:52 <rust_collector> mmhmm, a compat layer... ok. well, it is something, for now
11:16:06 <Ampera> not really
11:16:25 <Ampera> Wayland is pretty bad at the moment, and despite the best attempts of the idiots doing GNOME, nobody really uses it
11:16:48 <rust_collector> wel, that makes sense, lol
11:17:48 <rust_collector> if it has anything to do with gnome, that is a good enough reason for me to ignore it a while longer
11:18:22 <rust_collector> but ai guess I have to fuck up a system, trying ti every few years
11:18:37 <Ampera> I think GNOME symbolizes the three worst aspects of macOS, Windows, and GNU
11:18:45 <rust_collector> oh crap. ignore spelling. i am drunk
11:18:51 <Ampera> They throw out all sorts of legacy features and shit people actually use like macOS
11:19:15 <rust_collector> i think you are pretty much correct
11:19:19 <Ampera> They're unreasonably and needlessly bloated like Windows
11:19:34 <Ampera> and they're unstable and fucking volatile like GNU (in stereotype)
11:20:20 <rust_collector> Do you remember when we had the gimp toolkit?
11:20:22 <Ampera> in other news I've eaten about 40lbs of fries
11:20:35 <Ampera> no, I've only been using Linux for right around 3 years or so as a daily drive
11:20:38 <Ampera> but I'm aware of the history
11:20:43 <rust_collector> righ
11:20:45 <rust_collector> t
11:21:34 <rust_collector> damnit, now <i feel old
11:21:48 <rust_collector> akdhjreifhifjfofjsjsifpppckd
11:21:54 <rust_collector> i just had to get that out
11:22:21 <rust_collector> finger=>button not working
11:22:43 <Ampera> rust_collector, may I suggest less ethanol
11:23:11 <Ampera> in other news, borgar has been consoomed
11:23:16 <rust_collector> yes, you are not wrong. not that my spelling is great at any other time, but..
11:23:50 <rust_collector> borgar. he was such a nice cat
11:23:53 <Ampera> Where do you live anyways, is it Norway and are you the guy I keep asking and forgetting about
11:24:11 <rust_collector> yes, I am the guy you keep asking and forgetting about
11:24:15 <Ampera> alright
11:24:21 <Ampera> I'm a daft cunt, don't mind me
11:26:46 <rust_collector> heh, i am on google maps. it says I live 10 minutes and 1 minutes drive from here
11:27:05 <Ampera> 10 minutes and 1 minute
11:27:07 <Ampera> so 11 minutes
11:27:18 <rust_collector> i would think so?
11:27:24 <Ampera> huh
11:27:27 <Ampera> odd
11:27:41 <rust_collector> not to mention that the house numbers are wrong
11:29:27 <rust_collector> https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Knausen+8,+3185+Skoppum/''/@59.3875959,10.3997045,16z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m14!4m13!1m5!1m1!1s0x4646b50f67c2d959:0xef8e4b5f8520182f!2m2!1d10.4040819!2d59.387596!1m5!1m1!1s0x4646b50f67c2d959:0xef8e4b5f8520182f!2m2!1d10.4040819!2d59.387596!3e0?hl=no
11:29:31 <rust_collector> try that
11:30:05 <rust_collector> it should get you an idea
11:30:22 <Ampera> iis that your house?
11:30:28 <rust_collector> yes
11:30:43 <Ampera> ah
11:30:47 <Ampera> I'll order you some pizza
11:31:30 <rust_collector> Well, at least that is much better than the garage doors we ordered for one of the neighbors, when I was in school
11:32:07 <Ampera> lol, you prank ordered someone garage doors?
11:33:35 <rust_collector> yes
11:34:04 <rust_collector> me and a guy up the road, that was in my class
11:34:44 <Ampera> rust_collector, how and why
11:34:47 <Ampera> and did you pay for it
11:34:49 <rust_collector> i used to go there after school, and watch the cool people play nintendo... oh well
11:34:52 <rust_collector> heh, no
11:34:56 <Ampera> lol
11:35:02 <Ampera> that's fucking original
11:35:45 <rust_collector> they still do not even have a garage...
11:36:54 <rust_collector> well, we just called, and ordered a pair of garage doors. 2.5m wide, and xx m tall.
11:36:54 <EEVBlog> New EEVBlog Tweet: A decade of solid dunny use, still going. https://t.co/qnPGriwePZ
11:37:23 <rust_collector> this was before internet was a thing, so you just called, and things happened
11:39:20 <rust_collector> hmm, being slightly serious, I hope you people will tell me to stfu if I get too drunk some times? i hope I sort of still make sense, a little bit.
11:39:44 <rust_collector> i mean, I never make much sense, but...
11:40:41 * Halcyon nibbles on Ampera
11:40:50 <Ampera> rust_collector, mate, if this is a drunken rant I've had worse sober ones
11:40:56 * Ampera slobbers all over Halcyon
11:41:01 <Halcyon> :D
11:41:07 <rust_collector> it should just happen every few weeks or months, so just deal with it
11:41:08 <Halcyon> That fucking transfer timed out again
11:41:12 <Ampera> Halcyon, can you sha1sum the Raymond episode you sent me
11:41:16 <Ampera> Halcyon, no my server crashed
11:41:24 <Halcyon> Ahhh that explains it
11:41:36 <steve30> hi Halcyon
11:41:50 <Ampera> My computers are deciding that they want to no longer adhere to any sort of logic
11:41:52 <rust_collector> it would be interesting id the bsds finally had a serious issue, lol
11:42:16 <Ampera> rust_collector, it's weird, but my PBX, which is also a FreeBSD server, is fine
11:42:16 <Halcyon> Ampera: 04ec725bce657fe1f0aedcbfe3e5b97d70e6cc81
11:42:29 <Ampera> alright then I do have that right
11:42:46 <Ampera> I did a sha1sum of Apollo 13, but I know that one's fucked
11:42:59 <Halcyon> Yeh it's incomplete
11:43:02 <Halcyon> Shall I just try it again?
11:43:23 <Ampera> yeah
11:43:27 <Ampera> let me just make sure I have enough disk space
11:43:43 <Halcyon> It's 33 GB
11:43:44 <Ampera> yeah I got plenty
11:43:54 <Ampera> 200G left on that drive
11:44:08 <rust_collector> oh wow, this reminds me of this guy at work, who spent days downloading cheech and chong... some film. and when it finally was done, it was dubbed to french
11:44:10 <Halcyon> Cool, starting that transfer now
11:44:42 <Halcyon> At least it's more or less maxing out my upload now
11:45:09 <Ampera> Halcyon, as for the episode of Raymond, it seems to be particularly hosed, but now that I know it's what you actually have I'll try some stuff
11:45:34 <Halcyon> Yep, I even got the person I originally got it off to resend it and I have exactly the same copy
11:45:37 <Halcyon> So the original is munted
11:45:49 <Ampera> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Upce8udOVnA
11:46:21 <Halcyon> If I recall correctly, VLC used to play it just fine, it obviously just skips over the corrupt bits, but all other media players/transcoders I've tried don't want to know about it
11:46:32 <Ampera> Couldn't get VLC to play it
11:46:39 <Ampera> mediainfo couldn't even tell me what codec it used
11:46:45 <Halcyon> Weird
11:46:54 <Halcyon> Do you want another episode for reference?
11:47:04 <Ampera> Nah that's fine
11:47:09 <Halcyon> Okies
11:47:11 <Ampera> it's not gonna help me much
11:47:25 <Ampera> if you want you can run a mediainfo on it and tell me what codec it uses, bitrate and any other details could be useful
11:47:34 <Halcyon> Well see what you can do, it's the only HD copy of that episode I can find. I do have the original from DVD but it's SD obviously
11:48:20 <Ampera> When I expand my storage and server infrastructure some time this year I'll give you the keys to the real SFTP mount and you can drop and take whatever you like
11:48:26 <Ampera> even mount it as a folder on your machine if you want
11:48:49 <Halcyon> Yep, that would be good
11:49:03 <Halcyon> I'm doing the same with friends except over a VPN tunnel
11:49:10 <Ampera> smb?
11:49:39 <Halcyon> For now
11:49:41 <Ampera> eventually I do want to set up a VPN server, and host some smb and nfs shares for everything
11:49:51 <Halcyon> One is using Windows Server until he migrates over to FreeNAS
11:49:53 <Ampera> but that's on top of the huge list of shit I need to do on my server
11:52:07 <Halcyon> I've spammed your PM with those media details
11:52:09 <Halcyon> It *should* be the same as the corrupt file
11:52:11 <Halcyon> You're running pfSense as your router aren't you?
11:52:19 <Ampera> I am
11:52:23 <Ampera> which is also something I intend to one day replace
11:52:28 <Ampera> *sigh*
11:53:32 <Halcyon> As in the hardware?
11:53:39 Quit: ThunderSqueak ([email protected]) Quit: Leaving
11:54:23 <Halcyon> Why not just buy yourself a Netgate SG-3100 or SG-5100 and be done with it?
11:55:22 <Halcyon> Both will easily parse >1 Gbps of traffic
12:02:17 * steve30 paws at Halcyon
12:03:14 <Halcyon> Yes Mr Kittles?
12:03:15 <Halcyon> :P
12:03:35 <steve30> Meow
12:03:45 <Halcyon> Oh that reminds me, I need to go get chicken thigh out of the freezer...
12:03:55 <steve30> yum
12:04:09 <rust_collector> OH FFFF... IT'S A LION!!!!
12:04:19 <steve30> I'm looking forward to getting my Air conditioning put in next week
12:05:11 <rust_collector> I was starting to think that you just like the ac guy....
12:05:40 <Ampera> Halcyon, can you send me another episode, preferably something the same run time
12:06:10 <Ampera> the moov atom is missing from the file, which is kinda like a partition table for video (rough analogy)
12:06:17 <Ampera> so I'm going to try to transplant one
12:06:19 <Halcyon> Yeh that's what I found out too
12:06:32 <Halcyon> Standby, Ill see what I can find. Do you know what the runtime is?
12:06:58 <Ampera> Zero clue, because that's what's included in the moov atom
12:07:19 <Ampera> Halcyon, if you have the SD version you can look at that
12:07:20 <Halcyon> What's really odd, I'm hesitant in going off the file size, almost all the other episodes are 1.6 GB then all of a sudden that jumps to 2.9 GB... and from memory that isn't a double-length episode
12:08:06 <Halcyon> Well all the episodes (bar one or two) are all within a few seconds of each other
12:08:11 <Halcyon> So I'll just send you the next one in the list
12:08:13 <Ampera> then any'll do
12:08:29 <Ampera> It's really strange that it'd be corrupted like this
12:08:45 <Halcyon> Indeed
12:09:12 <rust_collector> eeh, it is 4 in the morning, and I am going to mominlaw after my nap. Good night you peoples.
12:09:14 <Halcyon> And I know it didn't happen on my end as I run ZFS (plus I have re-copied it from who I got it off)
12:09:18 <Halcyon> Night rust_collector
12:09:36 <rust_collector> have fun or something
12:10:25 <Ampera> Halcyon, I mean you were in video production so you should know what I'm on about, but it's strange that disk corruption would cause the video to be unfinalized
12:10:39 <Halcyon> I do know what you're on about
12:10:45 <Halcyon> I just don't know how to fix it
12:10:51 <Ampera> One idea is whoever ripped the show might have had an issue with his setup and simply kept recording after the episode ended, and then the recorder ate shit
12:11:02 <Halcyon> Quite possibly
12:11:32 <Ampera> in other news the new version of chromium-vaapi I just compiled is considerably more stable than the one I was using
12:12:06 <Ampera> This song from the Move is really good
12:12:29 <Halcyon> I can't pause that other transfer so both are running at 0.5 MB/sec, it's going to take about 45 mins for that episode to upload
12:12:59 <Ampera> pff, you can can the movie, just stick it on when you go to bed
12:13:05 <Ampera> don't want to eat up all your upload with it all day
12:13:19 <Halcyon> Done, I'll start it again after this
12:13:51 <Halcyon> Annoyingly it doesn't seem I can resume on SFTP, I don't know if that's a limitation of the protocol?
12:14:32 <Ampera> You can resume on SFTP
12:14:37 <Ampera> it's a limitation of Filezilla being ass
12:14:43 <Halcyon> Ahh fair enough
12:14:52 <Halcyon> I tried and it did nothing, so yeh, maybe my client sucks
12:14:53 <Ampera> SFTP is a full random access protocol, just like SMB
12:14:58 <Halcyon> Can you suggest another?
12:15:48 <Ampera> nope, because Filezilla is sadly still on my standard equipment for any computer

12:16:41 <Ampera> way nicer than command line ftp
12:57:44 <Ampera> Halcyon, I got the file I'll try to restore it in a sec
13:16:59 <Ampera> Halcyon, well I gave it a good go, but there's nothing I can do for this video file. The fact that you somehow managed to get it to play at all is very strange, and if you can manage to get it to play, show that to me
13:22:18 <Halcyon> That's OK, I'll try and source an alternate copy
13:22:31 <Halcyon> Thanks for trying

14:02:46 <steve30> £2.50
14:03:01 <Halcyon> How much would it cost to ship some here?
14:03:21 <steve30> probably <£10
14:03:50 <Halcyon> I want to get some but I can't seem to find it here
14:04:18 <Halcyon> We only have the liquid type
14:04:44 <steve30> I can probably send you some at some point, but I'm not going to the post office atm, due to coronavirus

15:48:20 <Ampera> EEVBlog Debug and Version
15:48:20 <EEVBlog> EEVBot Version 2.1, uptime: 38597 seconds.
15:48:57 <Halcyon> Did you update it?
15:48:58 <Ampera> I've started work on the next version of the EEVBot, new features are tentative, it might end up just being a port to C++
15:49:01 <Ampera> (no)
15:49:51 <Ampera> Things I'd like to include is an IRC statistics system, user tracking, a few command utilities like time and unit converters, and likely not in the next release, but in the future I intend to implement machine learning
15:50:13 <Ampera> to see if I can get EEVBot to spontaneously communicate upon prompt
15:50:50 <Halcyon> EEVBlog: What is 25 degrees Celsius in retarded units?
15:50:50 <EEVBlog> Address all complaints to the Monstanto corporation, oh wait.
15:50:54 <Halcyon> :P
15:51:43 <Ampera> I plan to also revamp the static interactivity it has, see if I can make it a bit more intelligent
15:51:54 <Ampera> but I hope to keep all the quirkiness of the bot, as it's amusing
15:52:05 <Halcyon> A "last seen" counter would be nice
15:52:16 <Halcyon> Like EEVblog, where is Ampera?
15:52:19 <Halcyon> Etc...
15:52:31 <Ampera> I can do that
15:54:00 <Halcyon> And if a user hasn't been here for more than 7 days, it purges them off the list (saves filling it up with nonsense)
15:54:08 <Ampera> why would it do that
15:54:26 <Halcyon> Well, you then just end up with a list of people and guests who join as a one off
15:55:12 <Ampera> so?
15:55:27 <Halcyon> *shrug*
15:55:32 <Halcyon> Garbage collection?
15:55:34 <Ampera> It's not hurting anyone
15:55:49 <Ampera> it's just going to be in a text file somewhere, taking up fuck all space
15:55:56 <Halcyon> I guess
15:56:37 <Halcyon> Setting local timezones would be neat too, but not sure how each user can "program" theirs
15:57:40 <Halcyon> Unless you program your bot to temporarily accept the timezone from a user but waits for the nick registration timeout to occur before it applies it (that way a malicious user can't just got an change it under someone else's registered nick)
15:57:54 <Halcyon> If the nick then doesn't change within the timeout period, the setting is applies
15:57:56 <Halcyon> applied
15:58:18 <Ampera> I thought about bot registration
15:58:42 <Ampera> but I'll explore that later, that would introduce secure elements I do not want to deal with at this very instant
15:58:53 <Halcyon> I wonder if NickServ has some kind of API you can hook into, to validate users etc...
15:59:02 <Halcyon> Yeh fair enough, I'm more just thinking out loud
15:59:59 <Ampera> To be brutal I hate NickOP, it's the most annoying part of austnet
16:00:45 <Halcyon> How would you implement it? Similar services are common on many IRC networks
16:00:49 <Ampera> One thing I could do, I'm planning on generating sha1sums for each unique user.
16:00:58 <Ampera> With automatic auth for one thing
16:01:02 <Halcyon> How would that work?
16:01:08 <Ampera> so I don't have to type in a fucking command to an amnesiac bot
16:01:20 <Ampera> Exactly how AfterNET does it, through a
16:01:25 <Ampera> password
16:01:50 <Halcyon> I don't follow... how is that different to what we do now?
16:01:51 <Ampera> which every single IRC client has a built-in mechanism for
16:02:11 <Ampera> because I need to /identify my password, which is annoying, and will still kick me off if the bot ever disconnects or reboots
16:02:34 <Halcyon> This sounds like a discussion gremlinz should be a part of
16:02:42 <Ampera> I've complained about it since we set up shop here :P
16:02:55 <Halcyon> Yeh but you're American, you complain about a lot
16:02:56 <Halcyon> :P
16:02:58 <Halcyon> Love you
16:02:59 <Ampera> SASL is another auth solution, and that has been a "yeah we're working on it"
16:03:15 <Halcyon> Don't get SASL with me :P
16:03:19 <Ampera> whatever, it's a free server, I'm not demanding anything (well I suppose I am, but I have no real right to)
16:03:27 <Ampera> the point being, I'd rather my bot operate independently of it
16:03:44 <Halcyon> Sure, as I said, I'm just thinking out loud.
16:04:22 <Ampera> A plan I did just think of is I am storing a sha1sum comprising amalgamated information about each unique user, so I could use that as a sort of password
16:04:55 <Halcyon> The problem with that is, you're limited to the info you can collect
16:04:55 <Ampera> so if someone's nick changes or that information otherwise changes, they can supply one they'd have requested from the bot before and that would identify them
16:05:02 <Ampera> I am?
16:05:16 <Halcyon> Well, IP address for example, most people use dynamic addresses
16:05:29 <Ampera> I can't collect their IP address, and you have already misunderstood what I'm on about
16:05:43 <Halcyon> Then what unique info can you collect apart from nick?
16:05:50 <Ampera> the point is that when they first join, they request their sha1sum from the bot, which, if their nick/identity changes, they can resupply it
16:06:10 <Ampera> the sha1sum is the only piece of unique info
16:06:22 <Halcyon> Then they have two separate mechanisms for one channel
16:06:36 <Ampera> don't disagree, was an idea
16:06:50 <Halcyon> I was thinking more along the lines of querying NickOP with "Is "Ampera", Ampera?" If yes, then the user is authenticated and good to go
16:07:14 <Ampera> to be honest, there's really not much that the bot can do with a registration once it has it anyways
16:07:41 <Halcyon> I know, but why do it half-assed?
16:07:47 <Ampera> yeah it can store timezones/locations (which I then have to secure and deal with people complaining about it to me)
16:07:59 <Ampera> Halcyon, good question, why do it half asses (NickOP)
16:08:07 * Halcyon glares at gremlinz
16:08:32 <Halcyon> The other thing you can do is a simple challenge/response via PM
16:08:32 <Ampera> again, austnet is a personal project among hobbyists, I get what I get
16:08:45 <Ampera> how is that any better than what I'm doing with a sha1sum identifier
16:09:12 <Halcyon> I don't fucking know
16:09:56 <Halcyon> Speaking of stupid: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kF3lNr2Xidg

19:58:02 <canadaguest> heh, hi hsn
19:58:33 <canadaguest> anyway...
19:59:25 <canadaguest> maybe a little confused here but, is there a formula in simple english to roughly calculate how much of a voltage drop comes after a resistor?
20:03:13 <Halcyon> Isn't that just V=I/R ?
20:05:46 <Halcyon> Sorry V=I*R
20:05:56 <Halcyon> https://youtu.be/6Maq5IyHSuc?t=1507
20:06:35 <canadaguest> would 100ohm be 100 or .100 in that formula btw?
20:10:54 <Halcyon> I'd imagine 100 ?
20:10:58 <Halcyon> T3sl4?
20:12:37 <hsn93> where?
20:12:53 <hsn93> 100 ohm will be 100 in R
20:13:28 <canadaguest> 1*100 or 1000*100 still seem a bit too much voltage loss or I'm just doing something wrong :-s (yeah its 1a and 100ohm)
20:13:59 <hsn93> what is the current ?
20:14:24 <canadaguest> 1a
20:15:21 <hsn93> 1 ampere going through 100 ohm resistor = 100v voltage drop
