00:14:28 <ThunderSqueak> Hi there
00:16:17 <ThunderSqueak> finally got the office looking almost like an office again, just need to sort the desk and bench stuff now, but I got the glass off the floor and all the shelves put back upright
00:19:47 <Ampera> Sounds good.
00:21:31 <ThunderSqueak> my back aches a lot now
00:21:37 <ThunderSqueak> lots of heavy lifting :/
00:21:44 <ThunderSqueak> and lots of repetative lifting
00:22:17 <ThunderSqueak> so how are you Ampera
00:22:31 <Ampera> I want to chop my nose off
00:23:00 <Ampera> I have horrible nasal problems, and have had for most, if not all of my life.
00:23:32 <Ampera> It actually gets painful how stuffy my nose is, and I have no clue why it happens. Nothing I can determine about my environment changes, it doesn't matter if there is more dust, lest dust, more cat, less cat.
00:23:52 <Ampera> Allergy medication has never worked, and nothing has ever done anything close to improving it.
00:25:37 <ThunderSqueak> ah, my ears get painful at times
00:26:41 <Ampera> Pretty much everything except my eyes doesn't work right neck up.
00:26:54 <ThunderSqueak> *nod*
00:27:23 <ThunderSqueak> for me it is because my body does not expel buildup in my ears properly. It has been like that all my life and causes issues at times
00:28:08 <Ampera> I just have shit hearing. I can hear nuance very very well, but I've had people talk to me in parking lots right infront of me, and I couldn't make out a damn thing they said.
00:28:46 <ThunderSqueak> *nod*
00:28:53 <Ampera> I can see very very well, my eyes are pretty much perfect, but I can barely breathe, especially through my nose, and my mind is broken in a whole plethora of ways.
00:29:03 <ThunderSqueak> that bites.
00:29:45 <Ampera> The good news is that my arms and legs work brilliantly.
00:32:17 <Ampera> My fingers especially, I can type like nuts.
00:42:24 <Ampera> I'm currently thinking of a project that would allow the RasPi to act as an NTSC or ATSC/QAM modulator, allowing for in-house on demand cable to any TV/TV Card
00:43:29 <Ampera> and I'm thinking of how to implement the DAC straight off the GPIO pins, and I was thinking of potentially using a resistor ladder instead of straight 1-bit PCM
00:44:11 <ThunderSqueak> tomorrow I want to run an antenna for a ham radio in my car
00:45:30 <Ampera> You can't use a standard stick antenna?
00:46:43 <ThunderSqueak> any antenna that can use an NMO mount
00:46:44 <coppice> I like the idea of taking one of those roof dominating ham antenna rigs, and driving around with it on the roof of a car.... especially a Smart
00:47:07 <ThunderSqueak> I just got a trunk mount system
00:47:23 <ThunderSqueak> it hooks around the trunk lip and then has a magnet
00:48:15 <Ampera> mmm, pork based telecommunications
00:48:36 <ThunderSqueak> Ampera, yes
01:34:56 Quit: ghillie ([email protected]) Ping timeout: 121 seconds
01:42:12 * T3sl4 hugs ThunderSqueak and Ampera
01:42:43 * ThunderSqueak wiggles.
01:42:47 * Ampera jerks awake at the unexpected hug
01:43:13 <T3sl4> you jerk
01:43:37 <Ampera> you co1l!
01:43:56 <T3sl4> you thunder!
01:44:01 * T3sl4 pets ThunderSqueak
01:44:10 <Ampera> this got real gay real fast
01:44:33 <T3sl4> it wasn't already?
01:44:42 <T3sl4> well, if you were nodding off, i guess the gay was relative yeah
01:45:27 <ThunderSqueak> what is wrong with being gay?
01:46:05 <T3sl4> but yeah, we're chatting at about 70% gay right now on average
01:46:48 <Ampera> ThunderSqueak, because it's not straight, and straight is pretty gay.
01:48:29 * ThunderSqueak likes women o.o
01:48:35 * ThunderSqueak shrugs.
01:52:06 <Ampera> that's not gay, it's only gay if people like guys.
01:52:12 <Ampera> liking women is straight
01:52:36 <T3sl4> whelp, you heard it here ThunderSqueak, you're a straight as a lightning bolt
01:52:47 <Ampera> boom
01:53:00 <Ampera> I'm as straight as a circle.
01:53:03 * ThunderSqueak is a woman.
01:53:04 <ThunderSqueak> <.<
01:53:06 <Ampera> I like sausages and tacos.
01:53:07 <ThunderSqueak> but ok
01:53:16 <ThunderSqueak> a woman liking other women is straight :D
01:53:23 <Ampera> that still makes it gay, because women are 50% their dads
01:53:34 <coppice> I like women, so everyone should
01:53:52 <Ampera> which is a guy, and furthermore their moms are 50% male, so that adds another 25%
01:54:10 * ThunderSqueak shrugs.
01:54:15 * ThunderSqueak gave up on men.
01:54:31 <Ampera> so as lim(x -> 100%) women=x where x is how much male a woman is.
01:54:50 <T3sl4> Ampera: you're a homo
01:55:10 <Ampera> homo erectus
01:55:18 <T3sl4> homo flaccidus
01:55:21 <coppice> have you ever seen a heterosapien?
01:55:23 <Ampera> homo say peen
01:55:32 <Ampera> yes, you, coppice
01:55:46 <coppice> but you've never seen me
01:56:15 <Ampera> that's where you're wrong
01:56:22 <Ampera> I am you, from the past, gone into the future
01:56:40 <Ampera> with a majority memory wipe that just happens to be limited to retaining information that I would otherwise know
01:58:09 <Ampera> when I get tired enough I begin to be able to stare into the mirror of life itself, and explain its very meaning.
01:58:37 <Ampera> and I shall tell you this understanding, for having the gift to see beyond the folds of reality is something I've finally decided to share with the world.
01:58:48 <Ampera> The meaning to life, the universe, and everything
01:58:50 <Ampera> is 42.
01:59:02 <T3sl4> what is 42?
01:59:20 <Ampera> funnier than 41
01:59:30 <Ampera> but not as funny as 43
01:59:36 <T3sl4> :(
01:59:56 <Ampera> let me turn that frown upside down
01:59:57 <Ampera> ):
02:00:48 <T3sl4> ಠ︵ಠ
02:01:21 <Ampera> unicode, ah, yes.
02:02:36 <Ampera> anyways, imma sleep
02:07:25 <T3sl4> o/

04:42:04 <rust_collector> morning people
04:46:49 <steve30> hi
04:47:56 <rust_collector> hello. I am just going to hang around and see what happens, if that is ok?
04:52:42 * T3sl4 serves rust_collector a nice mug of gelled phosphoric acid
04:54:47 * rust_collector rubs phosphoric acid in his face. Thanks T3sl4
04:55:04 <T3sl4> haha
04:57:16 <rust_collector> So.... what is the idea here? Is it a social or technical channel? I am not very good with electrons, so I will probably stay pretty quiet, most of the time
05:06:55 <T3sl4> the other server of this channel is mostly food and cat oriented, tbh
05:07:42 <rust_collector> sounds good to me. I prefer chicken, but... I am open to other options
05:11:32 <T3sl4> coppice probably has a snide remark about that
05:14:50 <coppice> a snide remark from me? that would be a first
05:16:12 <T3sl4> take your time, wouldn't want you get get whiplash
05:16:20 <T3sl4> to get*
05:21:32 <rust_collector> I thought whiplash was a thing that only happened in the ... uhm, around 1990, iIrc?
05:22:33 <coppice> you don't realise the kind of kinky passtimes T3sl4 is into
05:23:07 <T3sl4> i'm all about kinky hose
05:23:33 <rust_collector> hah
05:28:30 <rust_collector> well, I might be able to help you with that. I have a pretty good size box of that stuff out in the garage. I don't know why, but I just can't throw anything away

07:36:24 <Halcyon> *stretches&
07:36:31 * Ampera slaps Halcyon
07:36:45 <Ampera> I be making hamberger help
07:36:58 <Halcyon> Wha?
07:37:17 <Ampera> strog on/off
07:42:20 <Ampera> Halcyon: https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/310478241989263371/521426400377569281/IMG_20181209_154050.jpg
07:45:30 <Halcyon> It's scary that something like that has to advertise the fact that it has "REAL herbs and spices"
07:46:00 <Halcyon> Why buy that crap? Why not just use proper ingredients?
07:46:14 <Ampera> Yeah this is a cheap box, the nicer ones have fake spices.
07:46:20 <Halcyon> Hahaha
07:46:46 <Ampera> Because it takes more time and effort to do so, when I just want a bowl of salty pasta.
07:46:48 <Ampera> with beef
07:47:01 <Halcyon> Lazy :P
07:47:10 <Halcyon> I honestly don't know how you can eat stuff like that
07:47:16 <Ampera> I've made proper stroganov style dishes before, but it takes ages and I had to put a lot of effort into doing it.
07:47:31 <Ampera> I eat anything that's not a vegetable.
07:47:36 <Halcyon> I had a dream about Dave last night, it was weird
07:48:14 <Ampera> Sounds gay, and something that should be kept to yourself.
07:48:52 <Halcyon> It wasn't a sex dream
07:48:59 <Halcyon> Nor is Dave my type
07:49:18 <Halcyon> David on the other hand....
07:50:31 <Ampera> I mean my name is David, so.
07:50:53 <Halcyon> :P
07:51:13 <Ampera> what was the dream
07:51:35 <Ampera> oh by the way, do you want to see a picture of the best pizza in the world?
07:52:06 <Halcyon> Go on
07:52:14 <Ampera> https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/310478241989263371/521426430865965087/IMG_20181208_182343.jpg
07:53:00 <Halcyon> Without tasting it, I wouldn't say its the best pizza, but it does look delicious. Super oily though.
07:53:21 <Halcyon> Is that a container of onions you picked off it?
07:53:44 <Ampera> no, that was from someone else's salad
07:53:49 <Halcyon> I see
07:53:58 <Halcyon> Still, onions are delicious, especially red and white onions
07:54:01 <Ampera> not sure why that's there, but it's a bacon and mushroom
07:54:10 <Halcyon> Both things I like
07:54:12 <Ampera> also the oily is part of the reason it's so good, that's literally why pizza is good
07:54:26 <Halcyon> I've had great pizza with no oil in the box
07:54:49 <Ampera> honestly Halcyon, I'm not sure if we can be friends anymore after that one.
07:56:35 <rust_collector> hola! ee cooking channel!
07:56:44 <Halcyon> You just don't have a refined palate
07:57:06 <Halcyon> rust_collector: You would be surprised how many EE's appreciate good food, Ampera excluded obviously
07:57:43 <rust_collector> food is one of my favourite thing to eat, even if I am pretty much uneducated
07:58:03 <Halcyon> rust_collector> food is one of my favourite thing to eat
07:58:04 <Halcyon> Funny that
07:58:34 <rust_collector> but... stroganoff in a box, that says hamburger?
07:58:44 <Halcyon> Where are you from rust_collector ?
07:59:01 <rust_collector> norway, sorry about my strange accent
07:59:33 <Halcyon> Heh, I figured you weren't American, I didn't understand the purpose of that Hamburger thing either
08:00:39 <rust_collector> stroganoff helper video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hDybFLoOcGg
08:01:02 <rust_collector> just replace potato with pasta, if that was your thing
08:01:34 <Halcyon> I prefer strognaoff with pasta or rice
08:01:47 <rust_collector> fair enough
08:01:55 <rust_collector> I like rice
08:02:01 <Halcyon> Never tried it with potato, perhaps I should
08:02:13 <Halcyon> Even with mashed potato I think it would go alright
08:02:23 <rust_collector> yeah, that would work too
08:03:13 <Ampera> Halcyon, is this real enough for you? https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/310478241989263371/521431978059366402/IMG_20180916_150059.jpg
08:05:30 <Halcyon> That looks like tuna mornay
08:06:47 <rust_collector> looks almost exactly like the ready made pasta carbonara stuff we get up here.
08:07:11 <Halcyon> Oh gawd it actually comes with the pasta inside the box as well?
08:07:14 <coppice> Its a twist called pasta carbonised
08:07:19 <Ampera> It's homemade from scratch, and has no fish
08:07:22 <Halcyon> I thought you cooked that seperate
08:08:02 <Halcyon> Monoglycerides, Hydrolyzed Corn Protein, Silicon Dioxide. Nom. :P
08:08:56 <Ampera> Yeah, but that picture isn't hamburger helper.
08:09:15 <Halcyon> Just half a cup of that stuff has 50-100% of the daily recommended salt intake
08:09:21 <Ampera> of what
08:09:26 <Halcyon> Hamburger bollocks
08:09:27 <coppice> hamburger helper == mincer?
08:09:41 <Ampera> well I'm eating the entire box with extra salt on it
08:09:44 <Halcyon> https://www.bettycrocker.com/products/helper/hamburger-helper/stroganoff
08:10:23 <Ampera> It says 20%
08:10:29 <Halcyon> As I said Ampera, I don't know how you Americans can eat like that. No wonder you have so many health issues.
08:10:36 <Halcyon> 20% based on an American RDI
08:10:39 <Ampera> we don't?
08:10:42 <Halcyon> UK/AU its much less
08:10:57 <Ampera> what health issues do we have that you guys don't
08:11:08 <rust_collector> I think I saw somewhere that we are supposed to eat more salt than we do, but we are also supposed to eat some other thing, that works to neutralize the salt, but what was that again....
08:11:10 <Halcyon> We have the same issues, it's just a case of prevalence
08:11:19 <Ampera> what issues
08:11:45 <Halcyon> Obesity, Cardiovascular diseases, diabetes...
08:11:58 <Ampera> I have none of those.
08:12:18 <Halcyon> Not yet :)
08:12:34 <Ampera> nor do I ever expect to get it.
08:12:42 <Halcyon> Keep eating like that and you will
08:12:48 <Ampera> I bet you I won't.
08:12:51 <rust_collector> blah, we will all die soon enough. might as well eat something you like
08:12:55 <Ampera> ^
08:13:01 <Halcyon> This is not a race Ampera :P
08:13:03 <Halcyon> I'm not playing
08:13:21 <Halcyon> rust_collector: Ampera is 16... also, this is pretty much ALL he eats
08:13:25 <Ampera> I make it a point to not argue nutrition with people, because nearly everyone is wrong.
08:13:37 <Ampera> can you actually fuck off Halcyon, you make fun of my age and what I eat all the fucking time
08:13:41 <Ampera> it's starting to actually piss me off
08:13:42 <Halcyon> Except facts are facts Ampera. Also, I happen to know a lot about nutrition
08:13:50 <Halcyon> Calm down
08:13:54 <Ampera> Yeah, you and everyone else who claims to.
08:14:00 <Halcyon> I don't care about anyone else
08:14:24 <Halcyon> I didn't realise this was a touchy issue for you
08:14:43 <Ampera> I'm really fucking stressed right now, so everything is a touchy issue for me atm
08:14:58 <Halcyon> Well sorry to hear that :(
08:15:13 <Ampera> and the few things that I enjoy get shit on
08:15:37 <Ampera> I can't even post something I made without people getting upset.
08:15:47 <Halcyon> No one here is getting upset
08:15:54 <Ampera> that's a lie, I am
08:16:01 <Halcyon> Well, apart from you of course
08:16:38 <Halcyon> It's a fascinating topic. This isn't about you personally, it's about cultures
08:17:32 <Halcyon> Grrr this video card is starting to shit me
08:17:48 <Ampera> My big gripe is you say a lot of bullshit about the US and me that's just not true. I'm actually pretty damn healthy, and can actually eat real food.
08:18:01 <Ampera> The US isn't just full of unhealthy idiots who bumble around shooting each other.
08:18:07 <Halcyon> ...
08:18:30 <Halcyon> You do realise that not everything people say applies to EVERYONE
08:18:41 <Halcyon> Things should be taken with a grain of salt (pardon the pun)
08:19:02 <Ampera> idk, I'm just getting pissed at literally everything.
08:19:06 <Halcyon> I am not jspiros, I don't just blanketly apply my opinion to everything and everyone.
08:19:10 <Halcyon> Yes I can tell
08:19:21 <Ampera> I'm gonna go.
08:19:23 <Halcyon> This is out of sorts for you
08:22:38 <Halcyon> The news is depressing. Half of it is clickbait rubbish, the other half is sports.
08:23:46 <rust_collector> hmm, sorry if my crap job of making fun of hamburger helper was no fun at this time. hope your stress will go down again soon
08:24:21 <Halcyon> rust_collector: Ampera is going through a bit of a tough time which is understandable.
08:25:36 <Halcyon> Oh wow, another Jeep, another shit car
08:25:48 <Halcyon> It's a bit like the Apple of cars
08:25:52 <rust_collector> yay! fiat!
08:26:05 <Halcyon> Heh yup
08:26:28 <rust_collector> I miss the old chrysler, back when it was...chrysler
08:26:43 <Halcyon> There are very few cars left these days which aren't shit.
08:26:49 <Halcyon> I have to say though Kia is doing very well
08:27:15 <Halcyon> We have a few at work, not bad to drive for a cheaper car
08:27:24 <rust_collector> yeah, kia/hyundai seems to be ok, but they don't last very long
08:27:36 <rust_collector> but, nothing does these days
08:27:41 <Halcyon> I'm a Volvo driver, I've owned 3 now
08:28:06 <rust_collector> so, you like chinese cars
08:28:15 <Halcyon> Hehe, everything is owned by the Chinese
08:28:20 <Halcyon> Still made in Belgium
08:28:27 <coppice> cars used to be much shittier. they used to crumble into rust way faster than now, and they were much less reliable. Obviously industry doesn't like these changes, so they are filling new cars with a lot of tech stuff that won't last
08:29:42 <Halcyon> Volvo went through a crap period when they were owned by Ford, cars like the earlier S40 were basically a Ford Focus and they were crap.
08:29:55 <Halcyon> Thankfully they've gone back to making good quality cars like they used to
08:30:06 <rust_collector> the s40 was a ford/mitsubishi mix
08:30:31 <coppice> volvo have also filled their new cars with a lot of unreliable frills
08:30:56 <Halcyon> I have an S60 now, but it's not fully optioned up so I can't really comment
08:30:59 <rust_collector> I think you have to buy a tata or something like that to get something simple now
08:31:15 <Halcyon> Never had an issue with any of the Volvo's I've owned
08:31:37 <Halcyon> Among the worst cars I've ever driven are Subaru
08:31:48 <Halcyon> Absolute over-priced buckets of crap
08:31:56 <coppice> even the base models are full of frills. Volvos have been scoring quite poorly in reliability studies, and its mostly things like the infotainment
08:32:12 <Halcyon> Haven't head of that one coppice, interesting.
08:32:22 <Halcyon> I know Mercedes has all sorts of infotainment failures
08:33:00 <rust_collector> I don't drive very long distances, so I get by with old crap cars, lol. My previous car was a -93 peugeot 306, that I made suffer for 8 years, before it caught on fire in... february
08:33:01 <Halcyon> At the end of the day, if I have issues, it's still under warranty. I'll have a new car by the time warranty expires anyway.
08:33:27 <coppice> Halcyon: try looking at the complaints about the XC90, which is the most mature of volvos new generation. everything works through the infotainment, so when it gives trouble you can't even stay warm
08:33:33 <Halcyon> My issue is I live in Sydney, I have to drive long distances. Just one trip to and from work for me is 170 KMs
08:33:51 <Halcyon> I'm not a fan of the XCs
08:34:10 <Halcyon> I think the earlier XC60 ? had similar annoying issues
08:34:13 <rust_collector> 170km is not long distance, lol
08:34:24 <coppice> XC is irrelevant to this. all new volvos contain that some troublesome kit
08:34:25 <Halcyon> rust_collector: Every day?
08:34:36 <rust_collector> every day...
08:34:57 <Halcyon> I guess I'm wrong then :P Most people here would say it's a long way to travel just to get to and from work.
08:35:33 <rust_collector> well, walking is not a good option for you, but I would not say it is a very long drive
08:35:49 <Halcyon> It's about 1 hour for me, a bit longer in traffic
08:36:06 <rust_collector> yeah. about the same for me
08:37:01 <coppice> I don't know what Subarus are like to own, but the rental ones I've used were quite pleasant to drive and be in
08:37:50 <Halcyon> Subaru engines and mechanics are quite reliable, but underpowered. The CVT gear boxes are whiney. The general body construction is quite tinny.
08:38:03 <Halcyon> Also the EyeSight system is the most annoying I've ever used
08:38:36 <rust_collector> I think subarus are... very different, depending on what exact model it is. neighbor has a forester, and it has been super reliable. but some of the legacy ones have been more random, at least in my limited experience
08:38:54 <rust_collector> the early diesels were crap
08:39:03 <Halcyon> We had a Forester at work, 2.5L petrol. You literally had to mash the accelerator to the floor to get it to go anywhere at an acceptable pace.
08:39:28 <rust_collector> yeah
08:39:51 <Halcyon> Sorry it wasn't the Forster, it was the Outback.
08:39:56 <coppice> Halcyon: rental ones go faster :)
08:40:03 <rust_collector> I think they are pretty similar like that
08:40:12 <Halcyon> I have driven a Forester about 5 years ago, similar kind of issues. Fit and finish was pretty average too.
08:40:14 <rust_collector> rentals are best for drag racing
08:40:45 <Halcyon> The Impreza is also a gutless heap of crap, almost to the point where it's dangerous
08:40:54 <Halcyon> You won't want to get into a situation where you have to move in a hurry
08:41:08 <rust_collector> turbos do help a lot there
08:41:40 <rust_collector> do they really put silicon dioxide in food?
08:42:09 <coppice> I wonder how the rates of motorway slip road accidents compare between weedy engined cars and powerful ones?
08:42:12 <Halcyon> They would have similar performance to the stock Mitubishi Lancer
08:42:44 <coppice> rust_collector: you cook in silicon dioxide, hopefully with the borosilicate content
08:43:20 <rust_collector> yeah, well. so no big % in the food iteslf
08:43:28 <rust_collector> iteslf, lol
08:43:56 <coppice> it can be a handy ingredient if you want to kill people
08:44:22 <coppice> it has traditionally been added to tear people's guts and have them die of internal bleeding
08:44:46 <rust_collector> well, chlorinated brake cleaner mixed in petrol in a lawnmower should do ok to kill people as well.
08:45:04 <coppice> too obvious at the point of ingestion
08:45:16 <rust_collector> yeah, don't eat lawnmowers
08:45:43 <coppice> a bit of glass powder in your salad is hardly noticed
08:45:44 <Halcyon> I need to mow my lawn
08:46:04 <rust_collector> I can no longer see my lawn, so I made it thru this year
08:46:32 <Halcyon> We don't get snow to cover it up
08:46:38 <Halcyon> So unfortunately I have to maintain it
08:46:49 <rust_collector> sorry about that
08:46:57 <Halcyon> It's fine, I prefer the heat anyway
08:47:32 <rust_collector> I try to just sprinkle junk and tools all over my lawn, and wait for the snow to make it look pretty
08:47:41 <Halcyon> Hahaha
08:48:44 <Halcyon> My parents are from up your way, I should get around to visiting one day, I've never been.
08:49:57 <rust_collector> THAT is a long walk
08:50:07 <Halcyon> Yeh I probably won't try and walk that
08:55:03 <rust_collector> https://imgur.com/a/NCHn3h7
08:55:18 <Halcyon> Looks brisk outside
08:55:34 <Halcyon> But peaceful
08:55:35 <rust_collector> nah, -2 now
08:55:53 <rust_collector> and the snow muffles any noise, which is nice
08:56:14 <Halcyon> I like the cold when I'm trying to sleep, but every other time I prefer warm weather
08:56:19 <Halcyon> It's about 23C here at the moment
08:56:47 <rust_collector> I like cold weather, but my body does no longer agree with me
08:57:07 <rust_collector> 23 is almost perfect
08:57:31 <Halcyon> It could be a little warmer, but it's still early in the day
08:57:44 <rust_collector> any more than that, and I just stop functioning
08:57:49 <Halcyon> It should be about 28-30 today
08:58:31 <Halcyon> Do you guys know much about on-board NICs? Specifically about protection circuitry etc...
08:58:49 <rust_collector> not really
08:59:05 <Halcyon> I have a motherboard which was effected by a lightning strike into one of the Ethernet ports, everything except that port still works, just wanted to see if it was repairable
09:00:36 <rust_collector> I don't know too much about that, but I have a feeling the port goes pretty straight into some chip. But... I bet someone actually knows
09:01:11 <Halcyon> Visually everything looks OK, but yeh, maybe the controller has fried internally
09:01:27 <Halcyon> It's annoying too because it's a nice board
09:01:40 <rust_collector> is it a laptop?
09:02:01 <Halcyon> Desktop
09:02:10 <Halcyon> It has 2 NICs
09:08:24 <rust_collector> well, I would think it will have 2.5 soon. Unless you want to risk doing more damage to it.
09:08:36 <T3sl4> well, it used to. It seems lightning nicked one of them.
09:10:01 <damian> TWO NICS
09:10:04 <damian> how greedy are you
09:10:29 <rust_collector> well, it is many o'clock up here. good night.

09:19:52 <Halcyon> Hate it :(
09:26:01 <damian> pfft, that's what cleaners are for
09:28:57 <Halcyon> If I could afford a permanent cleaner, I would
09:35:19 <coppice> permanent? nothing lasts forever

10:06:23 <coppice> that must be some tough pastry
10:06:43 <damian> oh no!
10:06:50 <damian> did it break after you made the chicken pies?!
10:06:52 <Halcyon> I was washing it and the hog hair brushes fell out

10:11:48 <Halcyon> An industrial kitchen would be nice

10:17:43 <DHess_US> Gordon Ramsey? That is why your industrial kitchen has an industrial meat grinder.

11:10:10 <Halcyon> I have not
11:13:56 <DHess_US> Here is a short tutorial, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qWA9ha_GcVg
11:15:05 <DHess_US> The guys in the US knife channel are chuckling over the whole thing.
11:17:38 <Halcyon> There is a random dog on my driveway
11:18:04 <DHess_US> But what kind of dog. What did you roll on the wandering dog table?
11:18:19 <Halcyon> It was a patchy brown and white one
11:18:24 <Halcyon> Kind of looked like a cow but smaller
11:18:28 <DHess_US> Wouldn't that be a dingo?
11:19:15 <Ampera> d
11:19:36 <Halcyon> Dingos aren't normally patchy coloured
11:19:42 <Halcyon> Also not as fat as this dog was
11:20:00 <Halcyon> Ampera's awake
11:20:00 <Halcyon> :)
11:20:14 <Ampera> i wasn't sleeping
11:20:21 <Halcyon> I didn't say you were
11:20:21 <Ampera> I was slicing small parts of myself
11:20:31 <Halcyon> Do you taste like chicken?
11:20:48 <Ampera> not eating myself
11:20:58 <Ampera> salt content is way too fucking high for that
11:21:00 <DHess_US> No, people taste like bacon. We smell and sound like bacon when cooked.
11:21:18 <Halcyon> I think we'd be very fatty and chewy
11:21:31 <Ampera> you would, because you're fucking gross
11:21:38 <Halcyon> Although so is pork belly, so....
11:21:39 <DHess_US> https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/long_pig
11:21:45 <Ampera> I'd be amazing, like a massive slab of pork
11:21:55 <Halcyon> Oh great hunk of man you :
11:21:56 <Halcyon> :P
11:22:56 <DHess_US> I know about the sound and smell part first hand (haha) when I had surgery on my wrist with local anathesia and the doctor used a cauterizer. We sound and smell exactly like bacon when cooked.
11:23:08 <Halcyon> Charming
11:23:50 <Halcyon> So basically we sizzle
11:24:04 <Ampera> The few times I've burnt myself with a soldering iron I smelled fucking delicious.
11:24:11 <Halcyon> ROFL
11:24:29 <Halcyon> I know we're used to a lot of food talk in an EE channel, but this is a whole other level
11:24:41 <Halcyon> That has got to be QOTD
11:25:05 <Halcyon> `8ball Is Ampera delicious?
11:25:05 <ChanOP> 8ball: Is Ampera delicious??? Maybe.!!
11:25:15 <Halcyon> `8ball What about with steamed greens?
11:25:15 <ChanOP> 8ball: What about with steamed greens??? Concentrate and ask again.!!
11:25:17 <Ampera> it knows too much
11:25:25 <Halcyon> `8ball With gravy?
11:25:26 <ChanOP> 8ball: With gravy??? No.!!
11:25:33 <DHess_US> When I was like 10, I set my arm down on my soldering iron which was laying on the bench and the soldering iron stuck to my arm.
11:25:53 <Halcyon> I burned myself with an iron once
11:25:59 <Ampera> when I was 10, I could recall feeling joy
11:26:05 <Halcyon> I can't remember it smelling nice
11:26:10 <Ampera> or anything besides depressed, stressed, sad, or angry.
11:26:52 * Halcyon offers Ampera a hug
11:27:35 * Ampera snarls, denying any affection after years of pain and suffering have left him calloused and rough.
11:27:52 * Halcyon persists

11:28:27 <Halcyon> Touching my pointer :P
11:28:37 <Ampera> what pointer? i've set it to null
11:28:52 <Halcyon> It's still there, you just disabled it
11:30:31 * Ampera sets the memory referenced to by the pointer's former value to null as well, and declares all memory within that variable as free.

11:31:50 <Halcyon> I'll install Fedora in a VM first
11:31:58 <Halcyon> See if it does anything quirky that I don't like

11:35:40 <Halcyon> How would you know?
11:35:43 <Halcyon> You've never done either
11:36:48 <Ampera> fucking cheapass headset connector
11:36:56 <Ampera> almost broken in half, at least it's just an adaptor
11:37:08 <Halcyon> Is it an Apple branded connector?
11:37:37 <Ampera> no, Sennheiser
11:40:56 <Ampera> alright, well this adaptor is only functional when bent now
11:42:11 <Halcyon> You turned it gay?
11:42:35 <Ampera> no, I've been listening to too much Monkees
11:42:43 <Ampera> it probably tried to kill itself to stop that
11:42:54 <Halcyon> Monkeys throw their faeces
11:43:43 <Ampera> do people actually spell feces like that?
11:44:11 <Halcyon> I didn't realise there was alternate spelling?
11:44:50 <Ampera> faeces looks like it should be pronounced faces.
11:59:26 <T3sl4> with a long 'e', yes
11:59:57 <T3sl4> that's... old, or brit? spelling
12:00:06 <Halcyon> UK/AUS
12:00:19 <Halcyon> Same as Peadophile
12:00:40 <Ampera> Then that would be Feaces, which makes more sense
12:00:48 <T3sl4> oh, i thought that was just someone who likes decaying plant remains (Peatophile)
12:00:59 <Halcyon> That would be fee-aces
12:01:10 <Halcyon> Fea sounds like Pea (or Pee)
12:01:12 <Ampera> that's something you'd know quite a bit about, huh T3sl4
12:01:27 <Ampera> but you said Faeces.
12:01:29 <Halcyon> lol
12:01:30 <Halcyon> Yes
12:01:32 <Ampera> which makes 0 sense
12:01:43 <Halcyon> But you have to look at the syllables
12:01:55 <Halcyon> So Feaces would just sound wrong
12:02:00 <T3sl4> Say, if you invite kids to your grassy hill, does that make it a paedo meadow?
12:02:07 <Halcyon> lol
12:02:09 <Halcyon> Oh dear T3sl4
12:02:18 <Ampera> I'm not going to debate your upside down spelling, Halcyon.
12:02:34 <Halcyon> That's OK :) You guys can't spell a lot of words
12:02:40 <Halcyon> Aluminium, Colour etc...
12:03:04 <Halcyon> Or pronounce words like Solder
12:03:05 <Halcyon> ;-)
12:03:44 <T3sl4> or School, but not Schedule
12:03:59 <Ampera> I say Aluminium, pronounce it (Soul - der), and spell it Colour
12:04:07 <Ampera> but I say Faeces is stupid.
12:04:09 <Halcyon> That's because you're clever Ampera
12:05:45 <Ampera> asking one of my gay friends to possibly join in
12:05:52 <Halcyon> You have friends? ;-)
12:05:53 <Ampera> btw, T3sl4 , IoTPanic, cards against humanity?
12:06:05 <Ampera> yeah, I know between the two of us, I have no friends, but I do actually.
12:06:07 <T3sl4> nah, i'm going to bed early
12:06:23 <Halcyon> I didn't think you slept T3sl4
12:06:27 <Halcyon> You always seem to be around
12:06:34 <IoTPanic> I want to... but I have laundry goin down the hill and Im spending time with gf.

12:07:20 <Halcyon> :(
12:07:26 <IoTPanic> Yeah, that would probably be best
12:07:35 <Ampera> get steam, and get some other games, and I'll play those with you
12:11:26 <Halcyon> Which games?
12:11:30 <Halcyon> I'm not much of a gamer
12:12:20 <Ampera> idk, I'll play Half-Life DM with you, 1/2
12:12:27 <Ampera> or we can get a doom game together
12:12:32 <Ampera> SRB2 is also fun
12:12:44 <Halcyon> Meh
12:13:05 <IoTPanic> Insergancey is free now
12:13:18 <IoTPanic> The old ardacey one
12:13:32 <IoTPanic> And it was soruce, may run on linux
12:15:17 <IoTPanic> Sorry, not to butt in, just suddenlly thought of it
12:15:33 <Halcyon> All good :)
12:16:00 <Ampera> idk, Halcyon is an old fart and has no way to have fun over the internet besides IRC
12:16:07 <Halcyon> And Porn
12:16:47 <Ampera> I more meant with more than one person that isn't already there.
12:17:09 <IoTPanic> I can play a quick game of CAH if you want, gf is moving the laundry over
12:17:18 <Ampera> nah, we should do it when we have more people
12:17:42 <Halcyon> What about your friend?
12:18:07 <Ampera> nah, he's not at home
12:18:11 <Halcyon> :(
12:18:16 <Ampera> too busy being gay
12:18:26 <Halcyon> Is he out clubbing
12:19:11 <IoTPanic> Gettin dem kittys
12:19:18 <Halcyon> Meow
12:26:53 <DHess_US> Oh, kittys. That doesn't make as much sense.
12:35:12 <Halcyon> I love ordering stationary, I could spend way too much money
12:36:04 <IoTPanic> Pussy
12:36:25 <Halcyon> :)
12:36:27 <IoTPanic> @DHess_US
12:36:29 <IoTPanic> lmao
12:36:37 <Halcyon> I hate cats
12:37:04 <IoTPanic> Im a dog person, but I have two cats 😑
12:37:27 <Halcyon> I want to buy a dot matrix printer
12:37:47 <Halcyon> I'm sick of rollers and crap getting worn out on consumer laser printerds
12:40:36 <IoTPanic> Get a business printer. Only solution in this crazy work
12:40:38 <IoTPanic> world
12:41:05 <Halcyon> Even they still need to be maintained
12:41:23 <Halcyon> I love my little Brother printer, had it for years but it doesn't pick up paper anymore from the tray
12:41:29 <Halcyon> And I cant seem to find roller kits for it
12:43:02 <Halcyon> I don't do large volumes at home, I just want a reliable printer which will last
12:43:12 <Halcyon> Inkjet is out as the ink dries up
12:43:22 <Halcyon> So it leaves only laser and dot matrix
12:43:26 <IoTPanic> Inkjets are scams
12:43:35 <IoTPanic> Legitamitly
12:43:43 <IoTPanic> At least, how they're sold
12:44:04 <Halcyon> Yep they are expensive to run
12:44:20 <IoTPanic> Ink jet ink costs $0.06 to make ten thusand off
12:44:34 <IoTPanic> Meaning it's what HP, Canon etc pays
12:44:39 <IoTPanic> If not less
12:45:17 <IoTPanic> They sell the printer and typically wont make or looses money, then make a ton off ink
12:47:36 <seaner> the cartridge costs more than the ink itself
12:47:38 <Halcyon> Dot matrix printers are the other way around it seems. They are expensive to buy but cheap to run
12:47:41 <Halcyon> And they last forever
12:48:03 <Halcyon> Looking at ~$1000 for a decent model brand new
12:52:45 <Halcyon> I love how retro they still look: https://www.getoki.com.au/oki-microline-ml-395b-mono-dot-matrix-printer-24-p
12:56:10 <IoTPanic> That is for the cartriage @seaner. All its plastic, basic ink, and a bare silicon globed anti-tamper/level detection chip
12:57:45 <IoTPanic> A groccery store dime dispenser dispenses more expsnive products
13:07:42 <steve30> yay dot matrix
13:08:00 <Halcyon> yay Steve!
13:08:13 <Halcyon> I can only basically buy Epson or Oki ones here
13:08:22 <Halcyon> And that's out of the very few places that sell them
13:08:35 * steve30 's HP LaserJet is around 25 years old now
13:08:52 <Halcyon> Yeh those LaserJets were awesome
13:09:02 <Halcyon> Like the 4, 4L, 5 ect...
13:09:09 <steve30> though I did put new rollers in last year
13:09:24 <Halcyon> My Brother laser is perfect, except for the rollers
13:10:03 <coppice> HP rollers don't usually last very long. often just 4 or 5 years
13:10:33 <Halcyon> http://coolhelp.com.au/blog/?p=328
13:10:36 <Halcyon> I might give that a go first
13:12:42 <steve30> Is there any difference between buying 2 individual RAM sticks vs a kit of 2?
13:13:59 <IoTPanic> Nope
13:14:09 <IoTPanic> Unless you have two diffrent RAM sticks
13:14:57 <coppice> steve30: they keep changing the sticks. buying a set ensure you don't get a mix of revisions with different timings
13:15:36 <DHess_US> There is no difference. A set might have better pricing.
13:16:19 <DHess_US> I have a couple of dot matrix printers still.
13:16:26 <DHess_US> But I haven't used them in years.

13:21:31 <Halcyon> Steve: Most boards these days support dual channel mode
13:21:40 <Halcyon> But you need 2 sticks to utilise it
13:22:06 <Halcyon> If you see different coloured slots, you have a dual-channel board
13:22:15 <Halcyon> It basically increases data rate
13:22:30 <Ampera> hi ThunderSqueak
13:22:51 <ThunderSqueak> hi there
13:23:03 <Ampera> hi where?
13:23:04 <DHess_US> Huh? The latest board I have uses color to mark which slot to use first and not the channels.
13:23:45 <coppice> they usually have a related pair in each colour
13:24:12 <DHess_US> So there are two blue slots and two black slots but each channel has one blue and one black slot.
13:24:28 <Halcyon> Yes, thats a dual channel board
13:24:41 <DHess_US> It is, but not indicated by the colors.
13:24:46 <Halcyon> Slots 1 and 2 are one channel, 3 and 4 are another
13:24:53 <Halcyon> Which is why they tell you to install RAM in slots 1 and 3
13:25:13 <coppice> using 2 sticks with different RAS and CAS timings is OK, because the timings are read from each stick, and applied by the CPU. However, it offends my sense of symmetry if sticks come from different batches with different timings.
13:25:17 <DHess_US> If I used just the blue slots, then it is in two channel mode. If I used the paired blue and black slots, then only one channel is used.
13:25:22 <Halcyon> It depends on the config of the board, I've also seen boards where the slots are alternate channels
13:25:30 <Halcyon> Correct
13:25:38 <Halcyon> Do you populate blue first, then black
13:25:42 <Halcyon> *So
13:25:44 <DHess_US> So blue isn't one channel and black the other channel.
13:25:55 <Halcyon> DHess_US> If I used just the blue slots, then it is in two channel mode.
13:26:09 <Halcyon> That's generally how it works
13:26:22 <DHess_US> I've seen it done both ways at differen times.
13:26:48 <Halcyon> They use colours for ease of installation by amateur PC people.
13:27:09 <Halcyon> It's easier just say "Stick the RAM in the blue slots" than trying to number them, then having them check the PCB or manual for the correct slot vs number
13:27:57 <Halcyon> So the 2 blue slots are on two different channels, call them 1A and 2A if you like.
13:28:42 <Halcyon> So yes, Steve, unless you have a reason not to, I would buy 2 sticks of RAM
13:28:47 <Halcyon> They cost the same anyway
13:32:34 <Halcyon> Fuck I hate clipped-together electronics, give me screws any day. I just spent 10 minutes pulling the WRONG side off my printer
13:33:30 <coppice> you can't make plastic stuff really strong unless you use a clip together approach
13:37:44 <Halcyon> If in doubt, use brute force
13:48:41 <DHess_US> If it doesn't come apart, force it. If it breaks, then it was defective anyway.
13:50:30 * steve30 is cold
13:50:39 * steve30 looks forward to the central heating coming on
13:52:46 <Halcyon> lol exactly DHess_US
14:00:24 <Halcyon> I'll find out shortly if I made it worse or not
14:11:06 <Halcyon> YAY! I fixed it! :D
14:17:02 <Halcyon> I still want a dot matrix though
14:37:02 <steve30> you should get one
14:37:04 <steve30> they're fun
14:37:26 <Halcyon> I'll see how I go for spare cash after Christmas
14:39:28 <damian> dot matrix printer?
14:39:35 <damian> i'm sure my parents still have one
14:40:03 <Halcyon> I mostly print only text anyway
14:40:22 <damian> but then you'd have to re-ink your machine yourself
14:40:39 <Halcyon> Ribbons are easy to swap out
14:40:42 <damian> the last time i printed anything at home was almost two years ago
14:40:51 <damian> but can you still find ribbons, is the question!
14:40:55 <Halcyon> Of course
14:41:07 <Halcyon> You can still buy Dot Matrix printers brand new from Officeworks etc...
14:41:40 <damian> https://www.printersupermarket.com.au/Products/DotMatrixPrinters/EpsonLX-3509-PinA4MonoDotMatrixPrinter.aspx?gclid=CjwKCAiAl7PgBRBWEiwAzFhmmlL1p_9VorpSp8Wev1CSIaHusysQDj_JJzEorUgAqQAFFFSWnNQp1hoCZ4YQAvD_BwE
14:41:42 <damian> what the crap
14:41:44 <damian> but why
14:42:15 <Halcyon> They are still very popular in commercial and industrial environments
14:42:41 <damian> for what purpose
14:42:46 <Halcyon> Particularly because you can feed up to 5 sheets of carbon paper at a time and print multiple copies simultaneously
14:42:55 <damian> say what now
14:43:08 <damian> oh, carbon paper, gotcha
14:43:26 <Halcyon> They are cheap to run
14:43:39 <Halcyon> Unlike consumer printers where the ink costs more than the printer itself
14:45:02 <Halcyon> They are really robust too, built like a tank (usually)
14:45:08 <damian> but that's where laser consumption is good, refillable toner is cheap, like photocopiers
14:45:22 <damian> and i'd imagine a low lower ppm, so carbon copy is moot
14:45:28 <Halcyon> I've just had to repair my laser printer because it wouldn't pick up from the tray anymore
14:45:41 <Halcyon> Plus toner isn't the only consumable, you have drums to worry about too
14:46:29 <Halcyon> Well the multiple copy thing is usually used in industry. For example, shipping, one print job, multiple copies attached together, for link picking slips, one copy can go to the warehouse, another to finance etc...
14:46:36 <Halcyon> It's just another option
14:47:22 <damian> yeah
14:47:47 <damian> but these days (as long as the system is half way up to date) it's all digital
14:48:03 <damian> even us, we print a pick slip once, print a single label per box, the rest is digital
14:48:04 <Halcyon> For dot matrix, you're probably looking at 1-2 cents per page
14:48:16 <damian> all manifests and tracking is done via interwebs
14:48:21 <Halcyon> Sure
14:48:29 <damian> and our system is pretty old and crappy
14:48:44 <damian> we run a ~20 computer / 30 user warehouse
14:49:37 <Halcyon> But yeh at home I do very low volume printing, a dot matrix would be good. Cheap to run, no inks to dry out, no to mention it's pretty fucking cool :P
14:49:53 <steve30> The photo lab I use prints its invoices on dot matrix printers. They look very nice :).
14:49:53 <Halcyon> Kids these days don't know what they are missing
14:49:55 <damian> i thought ribbon dried
14:50:13 <steve30> I don't get much stuff on dot matrix these days though
14:50:14 <damian> i hated the dot matrix, though i was pretty stoaked when we got a colour dot matrix
14:50:17 <Halcyon> Yeh over long periods they can "dry" but they aren't really wet to begin with
14:50:22 <Halcyon> You might just get a faded print
14:50:22 <damian> with a three four colour ribbon
14:51:14 <Halcyon> Someone sent a typed letter (on a type writer) to Dave, maybe I could send something in printed on tractor feed paper :)
14:51:17 <Halcyon> See if he notices
14:51:28 <Halcyon> (For the mailbag)
14:52:02 <steve30> I bought an ink ribbon for my typewriter about 3 years ago and it is still good
14:56:05 <Halcyon> Of course you have a typewriter Steve :)
14:56:13 <Halcyon> You're such an old soul
14:56:57 * steve30 has multiple typewriters :)
14:59:14 <Halcyon> A line printer would be cool
14:59:49 <Halcyon> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X6oUGv3M5ec
15:01:04 <DHess_US> Carbon paper is pretty rare. I think you mean NCR paper.
15:01:10 <Halcyon> Yep
15:01:18 <Halcyon> The carbon-free stuff
15:01:22 <Halcyon> Didn't know what it was called
15:01:25 <DHess_US> https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carbonless_copy_paper
15:01:49 <DHess_US> The last time I saw carbon paper for impact printers was for airplane tickets.
15:02:29 <steve30> My mum had a dot matrix printed carbonless-paper invoice for some work done on her car a few months ago
15:03:11 <Halcyon> The printer is probably 20 years old too
15:03:56 <DHess_US> The last useful thing I used my dot matrix printer for was to print out folding diagrams from AutoCAD on heavy paper. Printing heavily smashed the paper exactly where it needed to be folded so the folds are very easy and exact. So I could print out on heavy paper, cut the boundries, and then fold up a 3D shape with tabs adn slots.
15:04:48 <Halcyon> Oh nice
15:05:12 <DHess_US> Very handy for making instant 3D models. These days if I had to I would use it to print up paper guides for air cooling.
15:05:48 <DHess_US> Or making little custom baffles for precision circuits.
15:06:17 <DHess_US> Very neat and tidy compared to a mess of tape and paper.
15:07:05 <DHess_US> I still have an LQ-570 and one of the last Epson wide carrage printers.
15:07:26 * steve30 curls up on Halcyon's lap
15:07:34 <DHess_US> My cartridge reinker got destroyed though.
15:08:23 <Halcyon> :)
15:08:39 <Halcyon> Oh no DHess_US :(
15:11:20 * steve30 wraps up in a blanket for extra warmth
15:30:35 * Ampera stumbles into the channel, blathering and murmuring about some random anti-PC bullshit, until he collapses onto the floor, twitching slightly
15:46:46 <Halcyon> What's wrong Ampera?
15:47:04 <Halcyon> You need to come live in Sydney Steve
15:47:10 <Halcyon> You'll never be cold
15:47:40 <steve30> well, australian summers sound a bit hot for my liking
15:47:59 <Halcyon> Yeh but air conditioning :)
15:50:08 <steve30> Are there cute boys to play with?
16:02:11 <Halcyon> Sure
16:02:22 <Halcyon> Jump on Grindr and use Fake GPS and find out :P
16:10:04 <damian> ahahah
16:19:29 <Halcyon> This is why children shouldn't have children: https://www.smh.com.au/national/nsw/livestream-of-video-game-films-sydney-man-allegedly-hitting-partner-20181210-p50l9a.html
16:37:35 <Ampera> hi Halcyon
16:42:03 <damian> wow
16:42:17 <damian> the REALLY fucked part is that the kid goes 'STOP!' imitating dad
16:42:21 <damian> obviously it's a regular thing
17:00:19 <Halcyon> Hey Ampera
17:00:28 <Ampera> hey hey hey
17:00:36 <Ampera> how's fat Halcyon doing?
17:00:50 <Halcyon> Yep
17:00:53 <Halcyon> It's sad
17:00:57 <Halcyon> Fat? I'm not fat
17:01:32 <Ampera> you aussies and your health problems
17:01:35 <Halcyon> Your cops might like doughnuts, but here, most cops aren't fat
17:01:39 <Ampera> no wonder why Melbourne is so fucking triggered all the time
17:01:49 <Ampera> people are misgendering them as whales.
17:01:57 <Halcyon> No, Melbourne is triggered because they are a retarded, hipster version of Sydney
17:02:23 <Halcyon> It's all about Turmeric lattes and de-constructed sandwiches down there
17:02:34 <Ampera> Wow, Melbourne must be REALLY fucked, because I consider Sydney to be a retarded hipster version of Portland, Oregon.
17:02:46 <Halcyon> *shrug* Maybe it is

18:14:16 <steve30> yum
18:15:20 <MrMobodies> That's what I had last night but with meatballs.
18:15:43 <Halcyon> I made caramelised onions with sriracha sauce
18:15:46 <Halcyon> Turned out really nice
19:23:23 <Ampera> My god, Doom on this tablet is fucking sharp.
19:23:51 <Ampera> I always love Doom rendered in really really high resolutions, the sector based levels make everything look so crisp.

19:30:16 <ThunderSqueak> I lost a 6 x 80 VFD module :/
19:30:33 <ThunderSqueak> that makes me very sad, I was going to use it in a retro computer build
19:30:58 <Ampera> Ouch, VFDs are not cheap.
19:31:11 <Ampera> much to my dismay, as I absolutely love VFDs
19:31:45 <ThunderSqueak> it was broken in the quake
19:32:17 <ThunderSqueak> I have 9 large garbage bags of stuff I have to haul to the dump
19:32:59 <Ampera> wow, that much stuff was busted?
19:33:02 <ThunderSqueak> that includes dishes, smashed monitors, an old oscope that had its tube shattered, and various other stuff
19:33:04 <ThunderSqueak> yep
19:33:19 <Ampera> damn
19:33:28 <Ampera> well what are you gonna do, I guess.
19:33:37 <ThunderSqueak> bag it and haul it
19:41:11 <ThunderSqueak> it is almost midnight and I am craving chicken
19:41:16 <ThunderSqueak> :/
19:41:29 <ThunderSqueak> like, a good chicken breast with maybe a curry sauce
19:43:31 <ThunderSqueak> you know the plus side to getting so much stuff out of the office?
19:43:36 <Ampera> Strangely I had the same desire.
19:43:42 <ThunderSqueak> I use that room for VR, more floor space
19:43:54 <Ampera> Nice.
19:44:02 <ThunderSqueak> and that survived :D
19:44:07 <Ampera> I plan to get into VR at some point, but I'm planning for Valve to release their new headset to look into it.
19:44:17 <ThunderSqueak> ah, I have been using VR for years
19:44:56 <Ampera> I don't have the money to, and I won't when Valve releases their headset, but I've used an HTC Vive, and I do truly believe it to be the next thing for gaming.
19:45:14 <ThunderSqueak> I have an oculus CV
19:45:19 <Ampera> I've never had that level of realistic depth, even for the 10 minutes I had the thing on, it looks like a holodeck.
19:45:30 <ThunderSqueak> it is amazing :D
19:45:57 <ThunderSqueak> at the time, I went with the CV because it was lighter and slightly higher res with a better lense for reading text
19:46:08 <ThunderSqueak> <- played a lot of starship simulations
19:46:09 <Ampera> Valve's new grip controllers look really cool too.
19:46:28 <Ampera> I'd probably end up spending too much time in VR Chat :P
19:46:34 <ThunderSqueak> but since facebook owns oculus I may look at a different company for my next one
19:46:36 <Ampera> or playing Half-Life 2.
19:46:44 <ThunderSqueak> Elite Dangerous
19:46:49 <ThunderSqueak> that was my poison :P
19:47:01 <ThunderSqueak> wanna see my ship?
19:47:06 <Ampera> Wait for Valve, which while never having been a great suggestion in the past, HTC has been doing some douchebag stuff with their headset.
19:47:13 <Ampera> if you want to show it to me.
19:48:55 <ThunderSqueak> https://twitter.com/ThunderSqueakAK/status/813955661981569024
19:49:39 <ThunderSqueak> That is the USS Bristlebottom
19:49:42 <ThunderSqueak> :>
19:49:49 <Ampera> Do you get to design your own ships?
19:50:15 <ThunderSqueak> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1y_1mtOQyvQ
19:50:31 <ThunderSqueak> you start with a base hull and customize the hell out of it
19:50:48 <Ampera> Nice cinematics.
19:51:00 <Ampera> There's only one problem with it that I can see.
19:51:12 <Ampera> It's not Half-Life 2
19:51:18 <ThunderSqueak> in VR it is breathtaking
19:51:36 <ThunderSqueak> I can walk around my ship
19:51:39 <Ampera> I'd imagine so.
19:51:52 <ThunderSqueak> its huge, that is the largest combat ship in the game
19:52:06 <Ampera> Reminds me slightly of STO]
19:52:18 <Ampera> (not the calculator function, the game)
19:52:29 <ThunderSqueak> star trek online?
19:52:46 <ThunderSqueak> there is a vr star trek game
19:52:47 <Ampera> aye
19:53:04 <Ampera> I played the absolute shit out of STO, I have more hours on that than any other Steam game (I think over 700)
19:53:34 <ThunderSqueak> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=romB8e5nMp8
19:54:32 <Ampera> That's going to be a hard pass, J.J. Abrams and Ubisoft aren't two things I'd like to see alone, nevermind together.
19:55:05 <ThunderSqueak> they just did a next gen one
19:55:22 <ThunderSqueak> it is still a lot of fun
19:55:23 <ThunderSqueak> :)
19:55:40 <Ampera> Idk, STO was fun, but I don't think there would be much more I want to see from it. I want to try some of the late 90's, early 2000's Star Trek games, like Delta Force, but I need to find some copies
19:55:47 <ThunderSqueak> I still play ffxiv
19:55:55 <Ampera> so I can give my fleet of obsolete battlestations a use.
19:56:11 <Ampera> I've never played a single final fantasy game in my life.
19:57:28 <ThunderSqueak> if your a startrek fan, I can recomend the fan made "star trek continues"
19:57:50 <ThunderSqueak> they did an amazing job at capturing the original series feel and even got some original actors in it
19:58:06 <ThunderSqueak> Grant from Mythbusters plays sulu :P
19:58:31 <Ampera> You're not the first person to tell me that, but I was never a big fan of TOS.
19:58:41 <ThunderSqueak> ah, well I found it amazing :)
19:59:02 <Ampera> I think it has its place in Sci-Fi history, and started off the entire series that I think found its peak in DS9 and Voyager, but TOS is a bit hard to watch for me personally.
20:00:01 <Ampera> I don't like fantasy in my science fiction too much, and TOS is a bit on the 1960's humans flying to mars in metal dustbins to zap martians with some convoluted death ray.
20:00:22 <ThunderSqueak> ah
20:00:28 <ThunderSqueak> yeah I didnt see it that way at all
20:00:31 <ThunderSqueak> ^^
20:01:49 <Ampera> I mean it has value, it's in my opinion a good series, but I like Star Trek better when I can loose myself in it, and think that this could actually happen some time in the future
20:02:21 <Ampera> and when you have pastel discount kitchen cabinets covered in illuminated gumdrops, that becomes a fair bit harder.
20:03:13 <ThunderSqueak> and ever notice how often the original series landed in mayberry from the andy griffith show? :P
20:03:24 <ThunderSqueak> that set was reused a LOT
20:03:25 <ThunderSqueak> XD
20:04:16 <Ampera> the what in the who now?
20:05:15 <ThunderSqueak> https://www.metv.com/stories/when-star-trek-visited-mayberry
20:06:56 <Ampera> Neat.
20:08:12 <ThunderSqueak> going to pull out chicken for dinner tomorrow I think
20:09:34 <Ampera> Speaking of chicken, what I did when I had a sudden craving for chicken, was get a load of boneless skinless chicken thighs, cube them, and fry them so they crisped up on the outside
20:09:38 <Ampera> it was absolutely delicious.
20:11:31 <ThunderSqueak> hmm no chicken, but I have porkchops
20:11:37 <ThunderSqueak> so that is what dinner will be
20:13:06 <Ampera> mmm, pork
20:13:30 <Ampera> I had a healthy dose of electronic derision for my daily meal.
