00:33:30 <Ampera> desu: so long as they can bring a fire stick, old ATX motherboard, and an unpowered scope to make stock images, I suppose that's fine
00:36:08 <desu> lol
00:55:33 <K> read that as "unprotected scope" and was confused for a bit
00:56:19 <Ampera> K: remember always use birth control when fucking your scope
00:56:55 <DHess_US> Always practice safe hex.
00:57:03 <K> a sound advice
00:57:17 * Ampera hexes DHess_US
00:57:29 <Ampera> how are the both of you knuckleheads doing
00:57:38 <Ampera> collectively, not individually
00:57:51 <K> draging along
00:58:13 <K> darn, two g's in that word
00:58:19 <DHess_US> Trying to figure out the best way to add a VPN tunnel to my network.
00:58:33 <DHess_US> It would be much easier if I had a router which supported source routing.
01:01:55 <Ampera> DHess_US depends on how much N you need in your VPN. OpenSSH is a very easy and nice VPN, but it only supports the forwarding of TCP ports, and I think only one at a time.
01:02:04 <Ampera> that last bit may very well be wrong
01:02:36 <Ampera> but as far as security and ease of setting up that security, I'm not sure if it can be beat
01:03:35 <K> you can run ssh as socks proxy of sorts
01:06:23 <Ampera> K, can you throw UDP packets through OpenSSH?
01:09:22 <DHess_US> The VPN type and security is no the problem.
01:09:27 <DHess_US> not the problem.
01:09:44 <Ampera> DHess_US: then what is
01:09:45 <K> don't think o
01:09:56 <desu> socks5 supports both udp and tcp
01:10:00 <desu> if i remember right
01:10:05 <DHess_US> The issue is that how do I run only specific applications running from a single system through the VPN?
01:10:16 <DHess_US> Source routing allows that but source routing is not a common feature.
01:12:31 <DHess_US> socks5 might be what I try first though
01:12:47 <DHess_US> That avoids the problem and I think it will work in this case but it is not a universal solution.
01:16:39 <DHess_US> And the provider I was giong to use for a test doesn't support SOCKS.

01:19:53 <Nothing\> hey guys, how's it going?
01:20:01 <Ampera> Hi Nothing\
01:20:08 <Nothing\> hey Ampera how you been?
01:20:20 <DHess_US> Ok, I know what I'm going to do first. I'm going to sacrifice my Windows 10 test box to the VPN gods.
01:20:28 <DHess_US> Problem solved.
01:20:49 <Nothing\> DHess_US: what test do you need an expendible OS for regarding a VPN?
01:21:06 <Ampera> Nothing\ interesting to be dishonest, fucking fucked to be honest
01:21:29 <DHess_US> Nothing\, the problem is that I don't have a router which supports source routing.
01:21:42 <DHess_US> And I don't have a VPN provider which supports SOCKS
01:22:03 <DHess_US> So my temporary solution is to sacrifice the Windows 10 test system.
01:22:43 <DHess_US> Then I will look into upgrading my router.
01:24:00 <Ampera> how are you doing Nothing\?
01:26:37 <Nothing\> sorry bout the delayed response, i was helping my mom with something on her phone
01:26:59 <Nothing\> i'm doing pretty well today Ampera, been a rough week of dealing with physical and psychological crap
01:27:23 <Ampera> Nothing\ funnily enough so have I
01:27:29 <Nothing\> constanty anxiety/panic attacks and vomiting, finally gave in and went to the hospital and they got me set up with some counselling and ativan so i'm doing better
01:27:33 <Ampera> but it's not ending in a week or even a month
01:27:43 <Nothing\> and propranolol, which works wonders for anxiety for a drug not specifically meant for anxiety
01:28:00 <Nothing\> so have you what? been dealing with anxiety?
01:28:13 <Ampera> Part of it, but not hospital bad
01:28:20 <Ampera> bad enough to really be painful though
01:28:34 <Nothing\> it's a terrible thing, i wouldn't wish it on anyone
01:29:19 <Nothing\> especially when you have nothing to do to help it, i mean usually i can distract myself with video games or youtube videos, but this time i just couldn't shake it, i'd start feeling better and then it'd come back again full force
01:29:27 <Ampera> You know about my gender dysphoria bullshit, right?
01:29:30 <Nothing\> yup
01:30:10 <Nothing\> it's really helpful for me to have propranolol and/or ativan because even just knowing i have something to take when i get anxious is enough to curb some anxiety attacks
01:30:28 <Ampera> July, Nothing\. July.
01:30:34 <Nothing\> it's just too bad you take ativan on a regular basis and you end up in a worse situation than you started in
01:30:43 <Nothing\> what's july? counseling?
01:30:48 <desu> does propranlol make you *feel* different
01:30:49 <Ampera> lolno
01:30:55 <desu> or ist it more like antidepressents?
01:30:57 <Ampera> (@Nothing)
01:31:11 <Ampera> HRT
01:31:45 <Ampera> There is no definite appointment, it could even happen in June if things move fast enough. I'm on vacation right now, and as soon as I get back, I'm going to start it.
01:32:08 <Nothing\> desu: nope, that's the beauty part, it's normally used as a blood pressure medication, it works by blocking beta adrenergic receptors, so it blocks the physical effects of anxiety as a result, the sweating, shaking, dry mouth, that stuff, you still have the mental stuff but not having the physical symptoms which in my case, cause a positive feedback loop, really helps make it easier to distract myself from the anxiety
01:32:16 <Nothing\> Ampera: ahh nice, that's awesome man
01:32:32 <Nothing\> so does that mean you're gonna transition? or have you already transitioned your physical appearance?
01:32:33 <desu> yeah that sounds good. i too have anxiety problems but i have been very reluctant to try benzos because of the addiction factor
01:32:37 <Ampera> I wish it was. I knew it never was a perfect or even good solution.
01:32:40 <desu> benzo addiction sounds really horrible
01:32:46 <Ampera> I will transition full time very shortly
01:33:03 <desu> or any medication for that fact
01:33:14 <Ampera> I know exactly what I'm doing, but that doesn't help me feel better about the decision.
01:33:28 <Nothing\> desu: benzos are superb for anxiety, but yeah ONLY as a take as needed sort of situation and only as a last resort, ime SSRIs and other antidepressants caused a variety of stuff that made my situation worse so those drugs aren't for me
01:33:45 <Ampera> I know I have no other choice, and that I must live with our technology and society as it sits, and that while it's not as bad as it could have been in the past, it's still not great.
01:33:56 <Nothing\> but propranalol is nice cuz it's consistent, not addictive, not intoxicating, not controlled so doctors have no problem prescribing it
01:35:09 <desu> odd that my doctor has never brought that up because i have said i do not like taking things that are possibly addictive
01:35:12 <Nothing\> another drug i've used with some success is clonidine, which is another BP medication, but not a beta blocker, it actually does make you drowsy, though not in the same way benzos do, that is, the drowsiness doesn't relax you, it's more just again i think it helps the physical symptoms more than anything, allowing you to deal with the mental stuff easier
01:35:25 <Nothing\> but the drowsiness of clonidine made it impractical for me to take during the day
01:35:46 <Nothing\> Ampera: well i really hope you get what you're looking for and then some out of this, man
01:35:52 <Nothing\> it sounds like it's been a long time coming
01:36:04 <Ampera> I know I won't, but I won't get it by doing nothing.
01:36:22 <Ampera> The solution is imperfect, and will take years to gain any semblance of what I might want
01:36:29 <Nothing\> desu: it's not actually very well known about by doctors, when i mentioned it to the MH counsellor in the ER she asked a bunch of questions about it cuz she'd presumably never heard of it being used like that
01:36:48 <Nothing\> one common use for them is by stage performers, musicians and such, to curb stage fright and tremors
01:36:57 <Ampera> When I was first going through this I almost began keeping track of the quality of my days in a way, and how I felt. As time moved on my days got worse and worse
01:37:11 <Ampera> at some points it seemed like every time I went to bed, I looked back at my new worst day in my life
01:37:41 <Nothing\> that's awful, did you happen to spend sleepless nights ruminating over all of that as well?
01:37:48 <Ampera> but the pain that I experienced on all of those days combined may very well hulk in comparison to every single day after I transition
01:38:08 <Ampera> I have sleepless nights anyways, I am a very poor sleeper when I don't actively care about it
01:38:40 <Nothing\> i sleep terribly, too every little sound or sensory input wakes me up and i pee like 10 times a night
01:39:07 <Ampera> Once I sleep, I ususally sleep, but it's getting to sleep that's the problem
01:39:28 <Nothing\> it's so annoying, i'll be having trouble sleeping, finally get to sleep, then 10 mins later i have to get up to pee, then i'll lie back down and before i can even fall back asleep i have to go again
01:39:45 <Nothing\> i wear earplugs for the noise though, those have been such a god send, it's amazing
01:40:01 <Nothing\> they work better to help me sleep than any sleeping medication i ever took (as directed)
01:40:09 <Ampera> If I truly need help sleeping, I play music through headphones
01:40:20 <Ampera> something I really like, but not enough to be upset that it's gonna be ruined
01:40:38 <Nothing\> my problem lately is i think my bed is too soft or something cuz i always wake up with back pain if i sleep more than 5 or 6 hours
01:41:00 <Ampera> I'm young, so I could sleep on a slab and be fine
01:41:03 <Nothing\> i haen't actually slept more than 5 or 6 hours in some months, but i can at least function on it
01:41:42 <Nothing\> i'm glad though, at the hospital i got hooked up with a counsellor who seems really good
01:41:57 <Nothing\> we're gonna do cognitive behavioral therapy together, which might actually be worth looking into for yourself
01:42:18 <Nothing\> it's gotta be the most highly recommended therapy i've ever come across for mental health tsuff
01:42:19 <Ampera> No it's not. I have a deep dislike of mental health professionals
01:42:39 <Nothing\> oh you don't need mental health professionals to do CBT, you can do it at home on your own
01:42:49 <Ampera> I find that I can get considerably better help with simply long conversations with an understanding friend
01:43:16 <Nothing\> the basis of it is just changing the way you think about certain things in order to rectify what you feel is wrong with yourself
01:43:32 <Ampera> It's all in the mind, you know.
01:43:36 <Nothing\> exactly
01:43:43 <Nothing\> and cbt takes advantage of that fact
01:44:10 <Ampera> Yes I can understand that concept, but there is a reason I have my perspective. To change it would I believe introduce an element of risk to the dangers I'm about to face.
01:44:30 <Ampera> My mind must have all hands on deck throughout this period, and there will be no stopping for a rest.
01:45:00 <Nothing\> i totally understand that, for whatever reason whether it's for the best or not, changing myself, especially something as fundamental as the way i think, was always an extremely unpleasant idea
01:45:19 <Nothing\> i stil have to fight myself tooth and nail any time i want to improve my life somehow
01:45:44 <Ampera> For me it's the same, but with my body.
01:46:18 <Ampera> I have to change it, I am comming apart at the seams because of it, but I can't stress to myself how much it will affect me.
01:46:28 <desu> lol
01:46:35 <desu> trannies
01:46:45 <Ampera> lol
01:46:59 <Nothing\> a good example is when i started getting into religion, i was terrified that i was going to end up losing my mind or that i was imagining the whole thing and in 6 months time i'd be in a psych ward rambling constantly to an imaginary god who never existed
01:47:26 <Nothing\> the idea of thinking about god constantly, or at least on a daily basis and changing the fundamental way my thinking worked was a scary prospect
01:47:52 <desu> better that than being a tranny
01:47:55 <Ampera> I think you are one of the few people who view and practice religion for good reasons.
01:48:03 <Ampera> desu: I couldn't agree with you more
01:48:10 <desu> heh
01:48:24 <Ampera> If you've come here to look for libtard tears, then I'm afraid I have to thoroughly disappoint.
01:48:26 <desu> i almost did hrt
01:48:28 <desu> dunno
01:48:37 <desu> i kinda feel like i fucked myself in the head a bit
01:48:43 <desu> and now i can't ever get this feel to go away
01:49:14 <Nothing\> Ampera: the main reasons i practice religion are to 1. improve myself so i can improve the world, and 2. to give god the respect and recognition i feel he deserves for his role in my life
01:49:33 <Ampera> If I could one tool in life, it would be to see the rammifcations of every decision I make, and how I can shape my life into the best possible outcome.
01:50:01 <Ampera> Nothing\ that's perfectly fine in my mind. To me, the wrong reason is to use it to be afraid of the world and those who inhabit it.
01:50:18 <Nothing\> one of the first things i read in the gospels was something Christ said about how when you practice religion, it's better to do it in secret rather than flaunting it like a hypocrite, and that was one thing that really spoke to me
01:50:31 <Ampera> Those are a considerable number of practicers of middle eastern religions.
01:50:53 <Nothing\> yeah i can see that being the case in the forms that are more conservative and thus more judgemental
01:51:17 <Ampera> but anyways, to what I was saying, I occasionally realise that I can see my future in the present experienced by other people
01:51:30 <Ampera> and depending where I look, I can see success, and I can see failure.
01:51:52 <Ampera> I can see the people who are living the happiest lives with the greatest respect for the body they carefully and painstakingly crafted, one which brings them infinite joy
01:51:56 <Nothing\> the other thing too is how the bible talk about how humans are inherently sinful creatures and like that, which a lot of people probably see as being disparaging of humans
01:52:18 <Ampera> and people who sit in their dens, with the misery of others, seeping malice and depression.
01:52:45 <Nothing\> but when you think aobut it, it's true, just by our nature we tend to put pleasure above the wellbeing of others at at least some point in our lives, and if you think back the last few days i guarantee anyone who tries can find a time in which they slipped up
01:53:05 <Nothing\> it's not saying we're bad people, it's just saying it's in our nature and we alone can't overcome it
01:53:15 <Ampera> I was thinking the other day, if every single crime was brought to justice in the world, we'd all be in prison.
01:53:21 <Nothing\> but a lot of people take it as the bible disparaging humans and saying we're evil and so on and so forth
01:53:33 <Nothing\> yeah we absolutely would be
01:53:44 <Nothing\> it's scary
01:53:51 <Nothing\> the justice system scaresme
01:54:19 <Ampera> That's one reason I dislike religion. I can see my world and the elements that construct it, and I can make sense of how people work better than any book could tell me.
01:54:42 <Nothing\> yeah i won't lie, it's incredibly hard to make heads or tails of what's in the bible
01:55:05 <Ampera> In my mind, religion is truly beneficial if people use the bible as insight rather than law
01:55:26 <Ampera> as a collection of basic principles humanity has attempted to gather long ago, and how they may reflect on our society today.
01:55:33 <Nothing\> well that depends, trial by ordeal was predicated on that and it was less than ideal
01:56:09 <Ampera> I do not need it, but I do not find critical fault in those who find benefit from it
01:56:31 <Nothing\> no,i suppose not
01:58:28 <Ampera> Anyways, I know what I must do, and the strength I need to put in to do it. Part of my preparation is to make the situation seem worse than it will be, and measure myself against it.
01:58:42 <Ampera> Pessimism is optimistic in that way.
01:59:52 <Ampera> I know what I am doing it that which will make me feel better, I've experimented, and I know going farther is going to help me
02:00:09 <Ampera> and that I have the sheer emotional and psychological strength to keep up with everything, even the people I deal with
02:00:25 <Ampera> I also know it won't be pleasant, and it will be a war I count the days to the never end of.
02:00:54 <Nothing\> sadly these are things we will have to deal with until the day we die
02:01:11 <Nothing\> but with hard work and effort, we can at least mitigate our suffering as we deal with it
02:03:26 <Nothing\> finally i was able to extract the fundamental frequency out of a square wave and only the fundamental
02:05:00 <Nothing\> i've been trying to do this forever but i'd always get either the fundamental is attenuated too severely or the harmonics are too strong, i could never get a sharp enough cut off that just the fundamental comes through
02:05:11 <Nothing\> so i made a 15th order low pass RC filter lol
02:05:14 <Nothing\> https://i.imgur.com/ruyopwi.png
02:05:40 <Nothing\> works like a charm, except the fundamental is still attenuated to about 10% of its original strength
02:05:59 <K> what happens if the frequency is changed?
02:06:13 <K> or that is something you are not concenrned with
02:06:22 <K> ?
02:06:28 <Nothing\> i'm not concerned with that, it'd just be coming out of a 555 or something
02:06:36 <Nothing\> or a multivibrator
02:06:41 <Nothing\> which i guess would change frequency
02:06:46 <Nothing\> if you look at it weird
02:07:33 <K> otoh, if change is not drastic (x10), then the filter probably will do just fine
02:07:38 <Nothing\> but ever since i leaned about multivibrators i always heard that they were used because they were "rich in harmonics" so i've spent the last while trying work out exactly how you do that
02:08:08 <Nothing\> yeah as far as this simulation goes, it seems to work well, i'll have to see how it work in real life but i need more capacitors for that
02:08:45 <Nothing\> i found some superb design tools for a variety of filters on this one site, it's been really helpful
02:08:48 <Nothing\> http://sim.okawa-denshi.jp/en/CRtool.php
02:09:02 <Nothing\> generates bode diagrams, nyquist diagrams, oscillation analysis, you name it
02:10:35 <Nothing\> one interesting thing i learned about LR filters is you don't even need to use a resistor with them, apparently the parasitic resistance is enough
02:10:41 <K> yea, it is good, i think i've seen it before
02:11:18 <Nothing\> like i measured the resistance on these axial lead 10mh inductors i have, it was about 50 ohms
02:11:31 <Nothing\> i just don't know how that would work in terms of where you would tap it
02:12:20 <Nothing\> usually you tap between the inductor and resistor but if the resistance is part of the inductor then all you've got is either the input with your input signal on it, or your output which is probably grounded and so at 0 volts
02:12:47 <K> hm, not sure if series resistance in inductor will do you any good thou
02:14:02 <Nothing\> well that's what the textbook on all about circuits said it should work, i should look at the spice diagrams they included for examples and see how that worked
02:14:24 <DHess_US> Nothing\, the way to do it is to notch out the lower odd harmonics and then low pass filter the higher ones.
02:14:25 <K> i might be missing something yes
02:15:26 <Nothing\> DHess_US: there are no lower harmonics in a square wave though, i don't think anyways
02:16:20 <Nothing\> and sure enough all i've got in this diagram are low pass filters, there are no notch pass or high pass, but i'm still getting a sine wave on the output
02:17:07 <Nothing\> generating a sine wave has been a sort of holy grail goal to me
02:20:36 <Nothing\> hte one thing that confuses me is if i were to use an LR filter on the output of a 555, putting a bare inductor on the output of a square wave will generate dangerously (for equipment) high voltage from the inductance
02:20:39 <Nothing\> lika kickback
02:29:14 <T3sl4> Nothing\: equal value RCs have uselessly soft transfer functions
02:30:06 <T3sl4> geometrically scaled RCs can approach a repeated pole (Q = 0.5?) but not very close for as many stages as shown there, not with real parts
02:31:04 <T3sl4> in short, even a repeated pole isn't really sharp enough for filtering harmonics from a square wave, you need an opamp to make an active filter
02:32:25 <T3sl4> or inductors ;)
02:33:32 <Nothing\> i was thinking of using an active filter, but i couldn't find any advantage it offered from my cursory glance at its properties
02:33:53 <Nothing\> i still have a fair bit of material i've been meaning to read on filters and harmonics
02:40:07 <DHess_US> Nothing\, I mean notch out the lower of the higher harminics, the 3rd and 5th.
02:40:19 <DHess_US> That leaves plenty of room for the low pass filter to get the 7th and higher harmonics.
02:40:59 <DHess_US> Low pass filtering the 3rd harmonic is really difficult. It is much easier to notch it out.

17:37:58 <!Nothing\> rated to 105c, so the heat didn't degrade it
17:37:58 <!Nothing\> oh maybe not, multicore 16awg goes as low as 5 amps, and this sure isn't no solid core wire
17:37:58 <!Nothing\> so that's probably what did it
17:37:58 <!Nothing\> i'm wondering if i should take this into the place that refurbished it and explain this to them so hopefully nobody will be immolated in their sleep
17:37:58 <!Nothing\> the wire looks like it just totally melted though, there were just a few strands of copper left on the connection, which explains why it was glowing white hot
17:37:58 <!Nothing\> now for the best partof any teardown/autopsy, THE CLEANUP!
17:37:58 <!Nothing\> i wonder if i can repurpose the gizzards as a temperature controlled relay module
17:37:58 <!Nothing\> well at least i was able to salvage a couple of motors and a diode thermal sensor fromit

17:37:59 <EEVBlog> New EEVBlog Tweet: Damn, there are things still screwed up with my @exetel internet connection at the lab today. Gmail doesn't work, along with ironically, Exetel's own forum. But Youtube, the EEVblog forum, & the @keysight IoT Challenge contest page works. I'll be judging that contest today.

17:37:59 <DHess_US> Watching Captive State. People thought this movie difficult to understand?
17:37:59 <EEVBlog> New EEVBlog Tweet: More bizarre stuff happening with my @exetel NBN connection. The @Keysight IoT judging pages work, I can see all the entries, play videos etc, but submitting results doesn't work. Switched to my phone Telstra network via USB tether and everything is back to normal.
17:37:59 <EEVBlog> New EEVBlog Tweet: @exetel @Keysight Similar weird stuff with gmail. I can see new email and open them etc, but I cannot reply. Problem definitely isolated to the @Exetel NBN connection.
17:37:59 <EEVBlog> New EEVBlog Tweet: I wondered why all the finalists in the @keysight IoT Challenge came from the Asia Pacific region. Not a single finalist from the US or the EU. Then I realised I'm a regional judge and that may have something to do with it :->

22:37:39 <Nothing\> that big red freshness lasts right through it!
22:38:00 <Nothing\> (BY MENNEN)
22:41:07 <Nothing\> doug katsaros is apparently the guy who came up with that jingle, yet i still can't find the name of the guy who made the juicy fruit song
22:41:54 <Nothing\> oh, james mtume, lol he even released an album centered around the juicy fruit song
22:43:13 <Nothing\> lol he has a 7 minute long instrumental mix of the song on one of his albums, you must really like juicy fruit to listen to that, or if you don't you will after you do
22:44:34 <Nothing\> now the real question is, why on earth am i reading about the song for juicy fruit first thing in the morning, and why can't i stop myself
22:45:55 Join: randoh ([email protected]) to #EEVblog
22:45:57 <randoh> Hey
22:46:39 <Nothing\> hey randoh
22:46:49 <randoh> I have a CSV from an oscope https://imgur.com/a/vSIcXaS and need to find the sample interval from this... how do I do this? was told it's the "calculated distance of two period points"
22:46:52 <Nothing\> lol i've actually used that name before on irc, minus the h
22:47:56 <Nothing\> well i'm no expert, but from what i see here there's not enough information to determine the period
22:48:10 <Nothing\> oh wait nm
22:48:15 <Nothing\> sorry i just woke up
22:48:22 <Nothing\> just disregard what i say lol
22:48:38 <randoh> and I do have a period measurement, if that helps
22:48:42 <randoh> aswell
22:48:52 <Nothing\> saying there's nothing to indicate the period meanwhile there's a seconds column right there
22:50:04 <Nothing\> well if you can't get an answer here, there's another eevblog irc chat somewhere, i found the address on the forums after a quick google search once but i can't recall offhand where it was
22:50:04 <EEVBlog> 42.
22:50:14 <Nothing\> there aren't usually a lot of people here though, at least not at this hour
22:50:19 <K> count samples between change in Second
22:50:27 <Nothing\> there ya go
22:50:37 <Nothing\> now i don't have to feel bad for not being able to help
22:51:47 <randoh> Between one change? 26 then, not 42 :D
22:52:01 <K> 26 readings happen in 0.1ms
22:52:17 <K> 1 reading happens in 0.1/26 ms
22:52:58 <Nothing\> makes sense to me
22:53:07 <randoh> mkay
22:53:33 <K> 4 microseconds might be it
22:54:01 <randoh> Ooh
22:54:12 <randoh> that does fit seemingly well into (1sample interval + 50ppm × reading + 0.4 ns)
22:56:12 <K> 250KHz
22:57:30 <Nothing\> sigh
22:57:41 <Nothing\> i really need to learn how to play stone soup again
22:58:03 <Nothing\> or that other one... nethack
22:59:03 <Nothing\> i'm in one of those moods where i feel like doing something, perhaps playing a game, but nothing i think of strikes my fancy
23:00:26 <Nothing\> been playing the hell out of terraria lately as i got it on ps3
23:01:20 <K> solitaire!
23:01:37 <randoh> Let me just verify I' doing this right... 6 samples per 0,1ms ~= 0.02ms sample interval
23:01:39 <Nothing\> actually i've been wanting to play minesweeper lately
23:01:43 <randoh> reading = 1ms
23:01:58 <randoh> (sample interval + 50ppm × reading + 0.4 ns)
23:02:05 <Nothing\> i wonder if i ever did dl an ARM version of minesweeper for my pi
23:02:10 <randoh> ~= 0,017 ms
23:02:12 <Nothing\> i remember looking
23:03:26 <Nothing\> randoh: did you just get a scope recently or something? i've been wanting to upgrade from my crappy $15 jyetech thing that doesn't even trigger on 10us events, but i'm poor as hell so i've been saving my money all year to get one
23:03:49 <Nothing\> but with so many choices out there, it's a tad overwhelming trying to decide on the right one
23:04:10 <randoh> Some stupid school exercise :D
23:04:17 <Nothing\> ah that sucks
23:04:30 <randoh> have access to some tho
23:04:38 <Nothing\> i'd love to go back to school for EE but i feel like turning something i enjoy into an obligation would ruin it for me
23:05:00 <Nothing\> plus i've heard you don't even really get into hands on stuff until the second year and i can see a lot of the remedial beginning stuff being mindnumbing
23:05:08 <randoh> So, noone sees a mistake there? Great, I can continue this :D
23:06:01 <Nothing\> "this is a transistor, it controls the flow of a large current with a smaller current"
23:06:15 <Nothing\> i can't count how many times i read that line learning about transistors
23:06:21 <Nothing\> or iterations of it
23:07:45 <Nothing\> i always thought it'd be neat if somebody made a real world hydrological model of electrical components, like you know how passives are often explained with some hydrological analogy, like a resistor is akin to a constricted section of pipe, or a capacitor is akin to a movable diaphragm or an inductor is like a weighted paddle wheel
23:08:31 <Nothing\> i don't think it would work though because a constriction in a pipe would cause the water to speed up, not slow down as the analogy frequently states, but it would still require more energy to pass the constriction so i guess the overall effect is the same
23:10:44 <Nothing\> hrm guess i'll play a link between worlds, i just hate sitting through intros and cutscenes when i start a new game of something, i just want to play the damn game! when are they gonna get to the fireworks factory! *sobs*
23:12:30 <desu> i went to school to be a electrician
23:12:37 <desu> lol
23:13:31 <desu> it was alright, i dont remember much but they tought us about rj45 connectors
23:13:37 <desu> (dropped out after 1 month)
23:14:03 <K> why did you drop out?
23:15:09 <desu> because i was 15 and kind of dumb
23:15:14 <desu> didn't think about the future
23:19:18 <Nothing\> desu: i know what you mean, i dropped out in grade 9 myself, though it's never stood in my way and i got my equivalent diploma anyways
23:19:49 <Nothing\> but regardless of that, i still regret it on account of all of the experiences i missed out on, field trips, lab experience, learning experiences, social experiences, i missed out on a lot
23:20:20 <Nothing\> unfortunately at that point in my life i just wasn't of the mindset to appreciate such things, much less to want to take advantage of them
23:20:25 <desu> i am 20 and doing first year of highschool after this summer heh
23:20:29 <desu> kind of weird
23:20:37 <desu> i spent 5 years doing nothing at all
23:20:41 <Nothing\> it's never too late to improve yourself
23:20:45 <Nothing\> better late than never
23:20:49 <desu> well i did some things
23:20:55 <Nothing\> that's okay, i've been doing that for like 15 years now, nothing
23:20:55 <desu> just not school or job
23:21:06 <Nothing\> although i still learn, but not formally
23:21:16 <desu> of course i do the same
23:21:24 <desu> i like learning, i just never seem to do well in school
23:21:33 <desu> i can't really be around people
23:21:49 <Nothing\> yeah same here, i'm the sort of person where i need to be shown how to do something and then allowed to try it, which school doesn't lend itself well to
23:22:03 <Nothing\> especially with my ADD making it extremely difficult to read anything more than a few paragraphs, if that
23:22:28 <Nothing\> and yeah i can't function around people, it's not so much a social anxiety i don't think, their presence just feels like an imposition for lack of a better word
23:22:43 <Nothing\> although that's always been in the context of social situations, so it may be different for something more formal
23:23:45 <Nothing\> i got stuck in the trap for a long time though of where i'd watch documentaries from pbs or bbc or those "educational" youtube channels like uhh... oh what's an example i can't think of one off hand
23:24:24 <Nothing\> but they were resources that provided the illusion of learning, but never actually taught you anything, or at least not more than a couple of interesting factoids
23:25:00 <desu> yeah documentaries are more intertainment than education in some cases
23:25:12 <Nothing\> it was quite a shock when i discovered there were actual uni/college lectures or microlecture style videos like khan academy or the organic chemistry tutor where it's just straight to the point and no flashy entertainment
23:25:41 <randoh> Is it weird or not
23:25:48 <randoh> that the answer to that formula
23:25:51 <Nothing\> yeah i do admit it wasn't all for naught since it provided a good exposure to a lot of those subjects, but i spent way too much time on them before i discovered better sources of educational material
23:25:55 <randoh> is the same as the sample interval :D ?
23:26:11 <Nothing\> i wish i could tell you randoh
23:26:22 <Nothing\> btw just to satisfy my curiosity, your name IS derived from archer, right?
23:26:59 <randoh> negative
23:27:11 <Nothing\> ah, yeah i wondered about that cuz of the extra h
23:27:19 <Nothing\> so where's it come from, if you don't mind my asking?
23:27:34 <randoh> my own name
23:27:37 <Nothing\> ah
23:27:42 <Nothing\> is your name randy? :P
23:27:53 <randoh> not quite
23:28:12 <Nothing\> that was the joke from archer, he always used the name randy as a pseudonym but was trying to come up with something new, so he came up with rando
23:28:45 <desu> that show has such a weird drawing style
23:28:50 <randoh> @EEVBlog probably knows if my accuracy calculation giving me the sample interval ans an answer, is ok or not :D
23:28:50 <EEVBlog> 42.
23:29:25 <randoh> or @K
23:29:29 <Nothing\> desu: i like it, it reminds me vaguely of mike judge cartoons in that the animation is more realistic and down to earth looking rather than bright and colorful and flashy
23:29:46 <Nothing\> but it's not very close to mike judge stuff at all, it's very much in its own league i think
23:29:53 <Nothing\> or maybe more akin to the drawing style of comic books?
23:30:31 <Nothing\> or like a richard linklater film without the black outlines around everything, ie a scanner darkly or umm oh crap i can never remember his other film's name
23:30:42 <Nothing\> that one about existentialism and philosophy and such
23:30:45 <Nothing\> waking life!~
23:30:54 <desu> yeah i was about to it's like a mix between comic books and something else
23:31:00 <desu> not sure what that else is though
23:31:10 <desu> dunno weirds me out though
23:31:11 <Nothing\> people always say that the characters look like their voice actors, but i never saw it tbh
23:31:16 <Nothing\> maybe in one or two of the cases
23:31:37 <Nothing\> especially archer, he does NOT look like h john benjamin
23:31:47 <desu> never seen the show
23:31:52 <desu> dont even think i've seen clips
23:31:54 <desu> only images
23:32:09 <Nothing\> ah that's why the animation weirds you out
23:32:18 <Nothing\> yeah it was an acquired taste for me, myself
23:32:57 <Nothing\> i had to try a couple of times before i got into it, but when i did, it wound up being as good as any other classic adult cartoons out there
23:33:12 <Nothing\> and the animation style was definitely one of the things that held me back
23:33:41 <Nothing\> actually i had the same problem with king of the hill but when i was a kid when that came out so i wasn't used to a cartoon that wasn't, well, cartoonish
23:36:00 <desu> heh
23:36:15 <desu> never got king of the hill really
23:36:21 <desu> i watched a couple of episodes of that
23:36:28 <desu> maybe it's cause i'm not american
23:36:34 <Nothing\> ah man, king of the hill is a brilliant show
23:36:51 <Nothing\> oh i'm not american either, though i am heavily americanized, but i still enjoyed it
23:38:28 <Nothing\> a lot of the stuff isn't amero-centric humour, for example, going into a walmart type place for hardware cuz your mom and pop hardware store got shut down from the competition, trying to get help finding a specific part only to have the staff be all ignorant teenagers who don't know anything about hardware
23:39:13 <Nothing\> i dunno, it's hard to describe, king of the hill was a pretty unique show as well
23:39:42 <Nothing\> but it certainly does come off as bland initially, especially if you don't "get" the humour
23:41:05 <desu> yeah that was my issue with it
23:42:15 <Nothing\> actually i tried watching it again recently and i still had that issue, i dunno if it's cuz it was a particularly bad season i downloaded, though i don't remember any particular season being bad, or if i just wasn't in the mood for it or what, i mean i still enjoyed it but not nearly as much
23:42:46 <Nothing\> i shoulda got the one where hank accidentally smokes weed, that was a classic
23:43:39 <Nothing\> he has a puff off of a joint that he thought was a cigarette and one of his coworkers was murdered and he became convinced that he killed her in his drugged out state
23:43:54 <desu> weed culture is so weird in america
23:44:02 <DHess_US> Calculate histogram, find top and bottom from vertical bimodal distribution histogram, index histogram by average of top and bottom, find period or frequency from horizontal bimodal distribution of histogram. Eat cake.
23:44:04 <Nothing\> it seems a joke to me, tbh
23:44:19 <desu> from my impression weed is something kinda common among all societal classes there
23:44:22 <Nothing\> at least medicinal marijuana, it just seems to be an excuse for people to get high without being hassled, which i can certainly appreciate
23:44:25 <desu> that's not really the way it is here
23:44:42 <Nothing\> yeah it pretty well is, here in canada at least
23:44:54 <Nothing\> i go to a black market dispensary and you see allwalks of people in there
23:45:00 <desu> well it's legal there isn't it?
23:45:01 <Nothing\> it's just like cigarettes
23:45:16 <Nothing\> it is legal, but there's still a ton of red tape around sales and such
23:45:19 <desu> i dont understand how people can smoke weed like cigarettes
23:45:25 <desu> i smoked weed and it gave me a panic attack
23:45:32 <desu> for 3 hours
23:45:34 <desu> lol
23:45:38 <Nothing\> well for me, the more often i smoke it, the less i get anxiety
23:45:42 <Nothing\> you sorta get used to it, i guess
23:46:01 <desu> i dunno
23:46:02 <Nothing\> but it still gets me once in a while, especially if i'm already anxious or if it's been a bit since i've smoked
23:46:08 <desu> it could have been synthetic weed too
23:46:11 <Nothing\> it seems to be the rate of change that gets me
23:46:13 <desu> the guys i bought it from where kinda sketchy
23:46:22 <Nothing\> ah yeah, i used to smoke that stuff a lot back in the day
23:46:25 <desu> it made my heart beat very fast eitherway
23:46:29 <desu> + tunnel vision
23:47:11 <Nothing\> except i'd order the pure drug and smoke it on its own so i at least knew what i was getting, though those drugs were never even intended for human consumption, they were originally developed to research the function of cannabinoid receptors in the brains of animals
23:48:16 <Nothing\> i think the problem a lot of people had with the synthetic weed is you hear "weed" and part of you associates it with the benignness of cannabis, so the tendency is to want to smoke it in a similar manner, when in reality one puff of synthetic is usually too much for most people
23:49:30 <Nothing\> i personally enjoyed it because, well i enjoyed the effects, but more so it was sooooo cheap compared to weed, i could get a gram of say jwh-122 for maybe $30 and a dose of that was about 5mg
23:49:59 <Nothing\> but the problem too is having such small amounts for the dose, it was really easy to overshoot it, so i overdosed (in the sense of taking more than i intended) a bunch of times
23:50:09 <desu> yeah from what i heard the earlier ones wheren't as dangerous as the later ones
23:50:13 <Nothing\> i'm glad i don't do that stuff anymore though, or anything like that
23:50:15 <desu> and more similar to real weed
23:50:22 <Nothing\> i used to be a lot more adventurous in that regard when i was younger
23:51:02 <Nothing\> well they were still as dangerous in that they have absolutely no idea what the stuff does to do beyond something with cannabinoid receptors, so there's no telling what damage it may do
23:54:38 <Nothing\> back in the 80's there was a synthetic opioid that came onto the black market called mppp which was sold either as heroin or used as an adulterant in heroin, manufactured by clandestine labs, but the way they synthesized mppp, it was really easy to accidentally produce another drug called mptp which destroys dopamine-producing cells in the brain and causes parkinsonism after a single dose
23:55:14 <Nothing\> so there were all of these heroin users who were suddenly developing severe parkinsonism and nobody could figure out why until they made the connection to these tainted batches
23:55:55 <Nothing\> it's scary though that they could get permanent severe parkinsonism after a single dose though, one almost never expect something terrible to happen after "just once"
23:56:14 <Nothing\> there's a really good documentary about it on youtube, though i can't recall the name
23:57:54 <Nothing\> but it's the same way with all of these research chemicals that are being sold as legal highs, the bath salts, spice/synthetic weed, various dissociative anesthetics, there are hundreds of varieties of these all floating around out there and nobody has the slightest idea what they can do because there's never been any research done on their effects at all
23:58:24 <Nothing\> and all it would take is another mptp to cause a catastrophe
23:58:40 <desu> yeah here we had some people getting convicted for manslaughter for selling rc fentanyl analogues
23:58:50 <desu> which is good
23:59:27 <desu> brb
