01:41:12 <K> prepearing for xmas?
01:41:24 <K> will that be a gift or conversation peace?

02:26:52 <Kuschelpony> today i learned:
02:27:38 <Kuschelpony> the XL4005 stepdown converter does not like the inverting configuration, goes in a hiccup latchup mode
02:30:46 <K> datasheet does not say anything about inverting conf
02:31:08 <K> might be optimized for buck only
02:31:53 <Kuschelpony> that configuration is a bit unusual, i think i saw it in the LM2579 datasheet, its independ of the actual chip
02:33:11 <Kuschelpony> its basically a stepdown, but the output is relative to the input plus instead of input minus
02:34:56 <Kuschelpony> i wanted to try something different than a flyback and had that stepdown module conveniently here
02:35:34 <arch> i want to try making one of those as well, a synchro buck used in inverting config
02:36:57 <Kuschelpony> i look for a broken wall wart to extract a UC3842
02:37:21 <arch> really? -_- ...they are pretty cheap, buy some lol
02:37:53 <arch> but i must admit, i do extract ucxxxx series whenever i find them in power supplies im scrapping
02:37:59 <Kuschelpony> hihi, thats right but i have these days no convenient way to order and beeing too impatient to wait one to two weeks
02:41:35 <arch> do you know the trick to salvaging transformers from psus? what i do is i take off the tape holding the core halves together, then i put it in a tin can, fill it with water, and let it boil away for 30 minutes. once it's cooled down, i use an xacto scalpel to, first, scrape out any varnish/glue sticking the sides; then i just insert the scalpel into either leg of the core
02:42:19 <arch> comes right off, pretty quick. the only thing is, it won't work for reaaaly potted cores with gunk all over and within the core
02:42:46 <Kuschelpony> yep, doing this past 25 years so
02:43:37 <Kuschelpony> except that i take right the hot transformer with nomex gloves and slightly twist and pull the ciore halves
02:44:06 <electrohead> K: yes
02:44:28 <arch> you don't boil it? or you mean after boiling you immediately take it out?
02:46:51 <Kuschelpony> dependind on the transformers, most of them i do boil and then seperate right ater taking out of the water
02:47:10 <Kuschelpony> foir some i also heat them dry on a heatplate
02:48:24 <K> the result of salvage is cores, i assume?
02:48:30 <K> not the coils
02:49:05 <arch> correct
02:49:10 <arch> especially coilformers
02:49:12 <arch> they are expensive
02:49:27 <Kuschelpony> K yes
02:49:50 <Kuschelpony> Cores and Coilformers
02:50:03 <K> i see.
02:50:14 <Kuschelpony> but i already plan to make own coilformers, when my 3d printer works again
02:50:35 <Kuschelpony> then print a few negative forms to mold in epoxy
02:50:37 <arch> do you have the thingiverse links? or you custom design them?>
02:50:46 <K> yeah, was gonna sugest 3d printing
02:51:02 <K> pure 3d printed are no good?
02:51:06 <arch> i have a 3dp, but only PLA filament atm, so not very useful for transformer application
02:51:11 <arch> for sure it will melt
02:51:12 <K> if something better than pla
02:51:14 <Kuschelpony> i never looked at thingiverse the past years, all of my stuff is self-designed
02:51:28 <K> say, petg
02:51:29 <Kuschelpony> K not easy to make a closed 3d form
02:51:31 <K> or nylon
02:51:36 <arch> if you have the openscad source, do you mind sharing it?
02:51:54 <Kuschelpony> arch, when i have done, sure!
02:52:01 <K> closed?
02:52:03 <arch> awesome, ty
02:52:09 <Kuschelpony> i plan to print negatives in TPU
02:52:50 <Kuschelpony> K i meant that there is full separation between winding chambers
02:53:08 <K> ah
02:53:17 * electrohead winds up arch
02:53:18 <K> yeah, that might be tricky both to design and to print
02:53:18 <Kuschelpony> not like a comb with unsupported wires between
02:53:37 <Kuschelpony> designing would be easy, oprinting without support impossible
02:53:58 <K> in sections?
02:54:05 <arch> i will be back later
03:03:32 <Kuschelpony> for something else, there is a very interesting filter design and simulation page at http://sim.okawa-denshi.jp/en/Fkeisan.htm

04:00:09 <electrohead> the second I saw the title, he first came to mind, and yup haha
04:26:02 <arch> electrohead, thanks for that okawa website link! i actually saw it before, and was going to wget dump it, but forgot
04:26:07 <arch> now i'm gonna wget dump it
04:26:47 <T3sl4> i never looked, is that all js, or some cgi/php/whatever
04:27:44 <K> por que no los dos?
04:28:21 <T3sl4> ay carumba
04:28:33 <arch> i dumped the entire schmidt walter site ages ago, and that uses js for the calculators
04:28:49 <arch> with i think a ruby or whatever backend
04:35:12 <arch> speaking of which, i need to update my dump of T3sl4's site
04:35:20 <arch> get ready for a barrage of reqs T3sl4
04:37:39 <T3sl4> throttling a client sounds a lot less violent when it's online

05:33:23 <electrohead> that said though - taking a quick look at the source code of that page, I'm seeing this: <form action="CRtool.php" method="post" name="crset">

05:34:40 <electrohead> I wonder if the php code in general was open sourced
05:52:30 <electrohead> hrm, ideas though
05:52:49 <electrohead> I would love to get a collection of programs/scripts/etc of anything related to electronic calculators and such
06:03:28 <TheDude> hello
06:03:59 <TheDude> anyone familiar with programming with berkeley sockets?
06:23:37 <electrohead> not at all, here
06:26:34 <TheDude> here's something I've been pondering
06:26:52 <TheDude> so I manage to get two processes to communicate through sockets
06:27:00 <TheDude> TCP connection
06:28:01 <TheDude> so I can get the data from A to B, but how to ensure that the data doesn't get cut in half
06:28:42 <TheDude> say if a bunch of data gets shoved into the receive buffer and not all of it is read at the same time
06:29:16 <TheDude> the next receive call is going to return the remainder of the previous packet and then the contents of the next one
06:29:32 <TheDude> so how to deal with that?
06:29:49 <coppice> TCP is a stream connexion. Its doesn't work in packets
06:30:23 <TheDude> what would be a good alternative?
06:30:41 <TheDude> UDP doesn't have ACKs handled by itself, so I kinda dislike that
06:31:45 <TheDude> alternatively, how would one normally approach a similar sort of problem? packetizing data on a stream connection?
06:33:57 <coppice> Using length - message - length - message is a common approach
06:40:35 <TheDude> but surely you need some sort of termination sequence for that, no?
06:40:48 <coppice> why?
06:41:03 <TheDude> how would you discern the length bytes from the actual data?
06:41:20 <coppice> because the stream starts with the first length
06:42:04 <TheDude> what if something goes wrong and you lose track of the data?
06:42:48 <coppice> then the stream is broken. Its a reliable stream. It either arrives perfect or it doesn't arrive at all
06:43:46 <TheDude> oh
06:43:50 <TheDude> that's reasonable enough
06:43:53 <TheDude> ty

08:25:14 <Nothing\> how go things in the EEV bloc
08:27:46 <Nothing\> still dead, huh
08:28:00 <Nothing\> good to know
08:32:07 <Halcyon> Morning all
08:33:16 <Nothing\> heya Halcyon
08:33:29 <Nothing\> lol that's funny that it's morning for you cuz i'm just getting up, myself
08:33:39 <Nothing\> i've always said my body's on karachi time
08:33:58 <Nothing\> anyway how you doing buddy?
08:34:10 <Halcyon> Eh I'm doing OK
08:34:12 <Halcyon> How are you?
08:34:28 <Nothing\> not too bad. Did I tell you I buggered my foot the other day?
08:34:38 <Nothing\> i think i did
08:34:51 <Halcyon> You did
08:34:53 <Halcyon> How did that go?
08:35:02 <Nothing\> yeah i just went to the hospital yesterday
08:35:14 <Nothing\> broke my big toe, nothing else. just gotta give it 3 weeks to heal.
08:35:19 <Nothing\> just as i was hoping :D
08:35:25 <Halcyon> Very good
08:35:29 <Halcyon> How much did that cost? :P
08:35:35 <Nothing\> it's free, i'm canadian.
08:35:47 <Nothing\> (thank god)
08:35:52 <Halcyon> Ahhh nice :)
08:36:11 <Nothing\> i'd be bankrupted several times over from medical expenses if i were a yank
08:36:30 <Nothing\> and what get's me, is not only are you paying out the ass for it if you hurt yourself badly.
08:36:32 <Halcyon> I think in my entire life, my (few) medical expenses have amounted to under $100
08:36:48 <Nothing\> but you're not able to work either, so you're out twice as bad.
08:37:07 <Halcyon> That's what sick leave is for :P
08:37:09 <Nothing\> So australia's got something like the NHS?
08:37:23 <Halcyon> We have universal healthcare through Medicare
08:37:24 <Nothing\> that's true, but sick leave usually gives less than your usual salary
08:37:40 <Halcyon> There are some doctors who charge for services, however most don't.
08:37:58 <Halcyon> Oh here, sick leave is the same pay as if you were at work
08:38:03 <Nothing\> or at worst you can get... i'm not sure what they call it there but it's called employment insurance here. Where the government pays you your regular wage for a few weeks while you're between jobs.
08:38:10 <Halcyon> Obviously up to a certain limit
08:38:18 <Halcyon> I think I have about 1500 hours of sick leave saved up
08:38:22 <Halcyon> I hadly ever use it
08:38:25 <Nothing\> Halcyon, is that by law, or does it vary from company to company?
08:38:26 <Halcyon> *hardly
08:38:51 <Nothing\> i'm not sure how sick leave works here
08:38:54 <coppice> Halcyon: if your salary is heavily biased towards bonuses, it can drop a LOT when you are sick
08:38:59 <Nothing\> i just know yanks get screwed with sick leave too
08:39:03 <Halcyon> I'm not too sure how it works to be honest, I think there are incentives for those who bulk bill, but then obviously you get a lot more patients in
08:39:13 <Halcyon> coppice, ahh makes sense
08:39:44 <Halcyon> Bonuses here aren't really a thing. I mean you do get them in private sector, usually at the end of the financial or tax year if you're performed well etc...
08:39:55 <Halcyon> But generally you just get an increase to your salary
08:39:56 <Nothing\> actually back to my toe, it really sucks cuz i can't even use my crutches anymore.
08:40:06 <Halcyon> In Government there are no bonuses (or none that I'm aware of)
08:40:17 <Nothing\> my armpits are bruised so bad from them for some reason. Using them is more painful than not using them.
08:40:18 <coppice> Halcyon: try asking some sales people about that
08:40:29 <Nothing\> I never thought crutches could bruise your armpits
08:40:49 <Nothing\> i used em for weeks as a kid and never had problems. But then i probably weighed half as much as i do now
08:41:03 <Halcyon> Yeh well sales is a different beast, but even still, I think that comes down to poor money management. Anything over and above you actual salary should be considered "play money"
08:41:14 <coppice> Most crutches for adults don't reach your armpits
08:41:21 <Halcyon> I know it's easier said than done but you shouldn't rely on money that you wouldn't ordinarily get
08:41:45 <Nothing\> coppice, sure they do. They've got those little arch thingies at the top that you rest your armpits in
08:41:51 <Halcyon> It would be like relying on overtime to pay essential bills
08:41:58 <coppice> Halcyon: again, ask some sales people about that. for many of them their base salary is not something you can really live on
08:42:11 <Nothing\> that way your armpits take part of the weight, and you can bear the rest of the weight with your hands on the handles
08:42:52 <coppice> Nothing\: that sounds like the crutches from my childhood. We don't see those any more
08:43:04 <Nothing\> but i have no padding under my arms. Or on my arms period. I'm real scrawny outside of my mid-section.
08:44:01 <coppice> Halcyon: if 60% of your income was from bonuses, would you be able to live on just 40% of your usual income?
08:44:04 <Nothing\> coppice, yeah these are actualy crutches from my childhood lol. I got them when I was 14 cuz I buggered my ankle on my grade 8 graduation party jogging around a gymnasium in dress shoes all hopped up on soda and caffeine
08:44:26 <Nothing\> rolled my ankle in the process of my stride and the damn thing swelled up like a softball
08:44:26 <Halcyon> coppice, again, as far as I know, that kind of ratio is not a thing here
08:44:30 <Nothing\> lol
08:44:46 <Halcyon> But in that scenario, no, probably not.
08:45:17 <Nothing\> oh yeah, check this out
08:45:29 <Nothing\> i found what i think is my favourite chinglish so far from an aliexpress post
08:45:39 <Nothing\> https://tinyurl.com/yc72fx9k

08:45:43 <coppice> Halcyon: people tend to think others are paid in a similar way to themselves, but you may be surprised at the answers when you ask around
08:46:21 <Halcyon> No, I'm aware, but my point is, it's very different in Australia. I'm not saying commission doesn't exist, but it rarely (if ever) makes up the bulk of someones pay.
08:46:33 <Halcyon> Even casual retail workers are usually paid by the hour, regardless of how much they sell
08:46:35 <Nothing\> it was for one of those HV wands that levitates little metal objects
08:46:44 <Halcyon> Of course, if they don't perform, they could lose their jobs.
08:46:46 <Nothing\> i was looking to get one to use as an HV source
08:46:56 <Nothing\> but I mean, I never would have thought to not use New York when film parts with white paper on the back need to tear up before using the oh. But thinking about it now, it makes perfect sense. At least now I can feel very ferce oh and have enhanced self confidence from the magic wand fly up moment
08:47:05 <Halcyon> That broke my brain Nothing\
08:47:13 <Nothing\> hahahaha i know right?
08:47:41 <coppice> Halcyon: retail sales people are usually paid in a fairly consistent way. Try asking some travelling people in sales and marketing how they are paid. You might be surprised.
08:48:12 <Nothing\> Halcyon, it makse me wonder why the hell i can't work as an editor for a chinese company
08:48:33 <Halcyon> I used to work for a telco (of which we did have travelling sales people), so I'm basing it off my knowledge of that and just general knowledge
08:48:43 <Nothing\> Halcyon, i've always toyed with the idea of going to china and becoming a white model on the side while teaching ESL for my career
08:48:43 <Halcyon> In fact I think we have laws relating to it.... standby...
08:49:03 <coppice> Nothing\: can you read and understand their Chinese, to figure out what they are actually trying to say?
08:49:10 <Nothing\> nope
08:49:20 <Nothing\> but i figure, they write the chinglish, right
08:49:27 <Nothing\> i correct the chinglish to english
08:49:30 <Nothing\> there's my job
08:49:49 <coppice> coppice: well, there is the problem. if you are truly fluent in both languages you are in a great position to make a good living
08:50:16 <Nothing\> coppice, everyone i've talked to who taught ESL was basically hired on the spot because they could speak english
08:50:30 <Nothing\> i've been told you need only physically show up and they'll hire you
08:50:39 <Nothing\> some places will even pay room and board
08:50:58 <Halcyon> So whilst it gets kind of complex, if you aren't working under an award (most people aren't), then minimum wage is $20.33/hr or $772.60/wk for part/fulltime workers, or, $25.41/hr for casual workers.
08:50:59 <Nothing\> but even so, a decent apartment's only about $80 in shenzhen
08:51:11 <Nothing\> at least, it was 15 years ago when i talked to my friend who did this
08:51:21 <Halcyon> Commission can be paid on top of that. Or, you can work for "commission only" but that would be stipulated in an enterprise agreement/award.
08:51:31 <Nothing\> but i mean, even my brother's exwife's autistic brother taught ESL in India
08:51:42 <Nothing\> and i mean, an autistic person in india
08:51:51 <Nothing\> i dunno how he did it
08:51:52 <coppice> Nothing\: $80 will get you a cardboard box in Shenzhen these days
08:52:05 <Nothing\> coppice, actually that seems to ring a bell
08:52:37 <Nothing\> housing prices are thorugh the roof now because of the demand on account of nobody's worth shit in china unless they own at least 1 or 2 homes
08:52:55 <Nothing\> which is part of the reason for the ghost towns
08:52:58 <Halcyon> Yeh house prices are nuts here, it's definitely a sellers market
08:53:07 <coppice> Its so expensive to live in Shenzhen now, that many people live outside, and can easily have a nice car from the difference in costs
08:53:15 <Halcyon> Which is good for my parents, they are about to sell their house in the 'burbs and move to the country
08:53:15 <Nothing\> Halcyon, same here. Average price in Toronto is north of a million
08:53:29 <Nothing\> here in Brantford, a small city. it's about $800k
08:53:37 <Halcyon> Yeh that's about the same here
08:53:56 <Nothing\> largely because foreigners come here and buy up the properties, driving up demand and prices
08:53:59 <Nothing\> among other things
08:54:31 <Nothing\> i read something about chinese students and their parents pulling some sort of scams re: properties that's also adding to it. But I couldn't quite follow it. I need to read up on it some more.
08:54:43 <Halcyon> I reckon they'll get about 1.2-1.3M
08:55:08 <Nothing\> something about chinese parents getting their kids to go overseas to buy these properties. And you end up with a $15 million house with a single student living in it
08:55:12 <Nothing\> which must be fucking nice
08:55:41 <Nothing\> the other thing is, they come over here and they have no credit history
08:55:50 <Nothing\> so they can take out whatever loans they want, within reason
08:56:06 <Nothing\> get a student loan, take a business course, buy a quarter million dollar franchise
08:56:15 <Halcyon> No credit history here means you're a high risk borrower. A lot of banks won't touch you
08:56:23 <Halcyon> (or if they do, it'll cost you)
08:56:38 <Nothing\> here, they'll take a risk on you, but only within reason
08:56:44 <coppice> I think it has reduced a lot now, but I used to know lots of Asians who officially lived in Canada to work towards citizenship, but only spent a few days there in reality. They slipped across the border to the US after a few days, and flew home
08:56:47 <Nothing\> maybe a thousand or so for a line of credit
08:56:52 <Nothing\> that's what my CC was to begin
08:56:58 <Nothing\> and a $500 overdraft
08:57:18 <Nothing\> but i mean, give a line of credit to an opioid addict and he'll default on a long enough timeline
08:57:20 <coppice> many of them had bought a house in Canada, as its seen as a good investment
08:57:27 <Nothing\> lol
08:57:48 <Nothing\> i was just taking out cash advances to support my $500 a week habit
08:57:52 <Halcyon> Yeh well it doesn't even have to be a credit card. Even things like phone accounts etc... they all contribute. We have a "positive credit reporting" system here, which means that it's not just defaults and arrers that get recorded, but if you pay your bills and loans on time, that goes towards your overall credit score.
08:58:37 <Nothing\> Halcyon, i'm not sure how it works with credit. But I know here the statute of limitations on collecting debt was shortened from 7 years to 2. So that's really been helpful for me on the legal side of things.
08:58:45 <Halcyon> Actually I should check to see what my score is, it's been a while
08:58:46 <coppice> there were also quite a few with a wife and kids in Canada, while they were in Asia where the job opportunities were better.
08:59:21 <Nothing\> i owed so much more money than i could ever hope to pay back. So after I moved I just didn't give them any information and then moved again, and again, and again etc
08:59:31 <Halcyon> Woo 817/1000
08:59:33 <Halcyon> Winning
08:59:35 <Nothing\> and they just stopped contacting me. So now, no more debt.
08:59:39 <Nothing\> legally
08:59:44 <Nothing\> but my credit's probably destroyed
09:00:07 <Nothing\> which sucks because that's gonna hurt me if i ever want to rent an apartment
09:01:04 <Nothing\> actually as it is, i almost wound up homeless last time i had to find an apartment because i receive disability, which is only about, well it's $1200 for me because of diabetic diet and transportation for appointments. But regularly you only get about $1000 and change.
09:01:15 <Halcyon> :(
09:01:22 <Nothing\> Meanwhile because of housing prices, rent prices are equally high, with a 1 bedroom starting at about $1200
09:01:34 <Nothing\> so you can't live on your own receiving disability
09:02:08 <Nothing\> every place i went to, even when i made it clear that rent was my #1 priority and always will be, they wanted nothing to do with me because they were worried i would eventually not be able to afford it
09:02:16 <Nothing\> which in reality, i wouldn't have
09:02:28 <Nothing\> and welfare's even worse, you only get maybe $600 for that
09:03:10 <Nothing\> but back to my story, after a year of looking i finally convinced my mum to leave her psychologically abusive/negligent boyfriend and she was in just as bad shape as i was, being a pensioner
09:03:29 <Nothing\> so we just got a place together and we sorta support eachother financially as best we can
09:04:03 <Halcyon> BRB, need to poop
09:04:15 <Nothing\> yeah i've gotta go run some errands
09:04:20 <Nothing\> or hobble some errands, i should say
09:04:28 <Nothing\> i'll be back shortly

10:33:11 <EEVBot> [Title] -
10:33:39 <jaymacks> "Bang bang!"
10:41:20 <Nothing\> hey jay
10:41:31 <Nothing\> what's the haps?
10:44:52 <jaymacks> Oh, just a wintry outdoor burnoff.
10:45:03 <Nothing\> just wrote a facebook message to my german relatives. Hoping i didn't butcher anything. But it passes the google check.
10:45:19 <jaymacks> That toe doing any better?
10:45:19 <Nothing\> right on. I was just at the dispensary again :/
10:45:22 <Nothing\> lol
10:46:08 <Nothing\> yeah actually it's not really in much pain anymore. I don't have to take anything for it. And the swelling's down enough that I can wear a sandal, so I don't have to use crutches anymore thank god.
10:46:30 <Nothing\> I actually have purple marks and bruises all under my arms from the crutches and they're so sore.
10:46:31 <jaymacks> Good to hear
10:46:53 <Nothing\> I couldn't imagine using them for more than a couple of days. I literally wouldn't be able to use them after a few days.
10:47:09 <jaymacks> Guess so
10:47:15 <Nothing\> even my hands were getting sore from them
10:48:02 <Nothing\> oh man
10:48:18 <Nothing\> i was looking on aliexpress, they've got TL866s for like $25
10:48:29 <Nothing\> and here i piad over $120 for mine
10:49:00 <Nothing\> shiet, i coulda got a function generator for that. Which is another thing i've always wanted.
10:49:07 <jaymacks> Yeah mine was $60.
10:49:19 <Nothing\> yeah that was the original price, $60USD
10:49:38 <Nothing\> then after taxes, shipping, exchange, import fees etc
10:49:56 <Nothing\> it was actually more like $150 but damned if UPS is getting their COD money
10:50:13 <Nothing\> that'll learn em to deliver the product before collecting the COD
10:50:48 <Nothing\> but i mena, if i already paid for shipping through the site you wouldn't expect there to be a COD charge
10:51:05 <Nothing\> for import
10:52:23 <jaymacks> Yeah, $48 item + $10 shipping. No duties bcos China.
10:53:39 <jaymacks> Got it in July or August when my sentiment about intl shipping even then was "now or never".
10:54:58 <jaymacks> Though to be fair I thought it was going to be trade dispute, not LA/LB logjam.

13:25:59 <Ampera> and T3zz4
13:26:03 * T3sl4 blush
13:26:13 <Halcyon> Actually Ampera, can you help me understand something...
13:26:35 <Ampera> maybe
13:27:09 <Halcyon> In Proxmox there is a ticky box against a physical network interface called "VLAN Aware"... it relates to http://www.microhowto.info/howto/configure_an_ethernet_interface_as_a_qinq_vlan_trunk.html
13:27:10 <EEVBot> [Title] - microHOWTO: Configure an Ethernet interface as a QinQ VLAN trunk
13:27:22 <Ampera> ew, proxmox
13:28:36 <Halcyon> What I want to do is have 1 trunk port from my switch to my pfsense box. The management interface isn't a VLAN, but the other interfaces are
13:28:55 <Halcyon> So basically on 1 interface I have both tagged and untagged down the same trunk
13:29:33 <Halcyon> Everything in Prommox that has a VLAN assigned works fine, but machines on the "native" network don't get connectivity. I'm wondering do I need to tick that box?
13:29:57 <Halcyon> I don't want to do it just in case I break it and can't connect back to it
13:30:00 <Ampera> how should I know. I don't use Proxmox, and Linux networking is a pain in the ass compared to FreeBSD
13:30:43 <Halcyon> Well you're no good
13:30:51 <Ampera> I don't even use VLANs
13:31:15 <Ampera> This is why I also hate panel based applications
13:31:25 <Ampera> since you get vague controls you have to consult more than just a manual to understand
13:42:00 <Halcyon> OK I think I worked it out
13:44:45 <Halcyon> Yep, that seems to have got it
13:45:48 <Halcyon> The "All" ports profile on my switches only include the native network(s), not a mix of native and VLANs
13:45:59 <Halcyon> So I had to create a port profile that would pass both
13:49:38 <Halcyon> The name is a bit misleading, but oh well, live and learn.
14:01:14 <Ampera> I should probably put together my new router some day
14:02:21 <Halcyon> You should
14:02:47 <Ampera> funnily enough the only thing stopping me right now is CAD.
14:02:53 <Halcyon> CAD ?
14:03:38 <Ampera> Computer Aided Design
14:03:47 <Ampera> I need to finish designing a case for it
14:03:48 <Halcyon> Yeh I know what CAD is, but why is that stopping you?
14:03:50 <Halcyon> Ah I see
14:03:54 <Ampera> and boy do I hate CAD

16:50:38 <arch> le sigh...mission failed T3sl4. i'm gonna redo that entire build fully. this time using uc3843. im talking about the cuk conv build. funny enough, my boss threw out his old subwoofer now, so i got a bigger, better sub now
16:50:54 <T3sl4> why
16:51:16 <arch> because i tried to etch a lm3481 build, and the vssop package sucks balls
16:51:21 <arch> etch didnt turn out good
16:52:13 <arch> lots and lots of conjoined traces and broken tracks
16:53:06 <EEVBot> [Twitter] - eevblog - Got some BodyPump weights so we can do classes at home now. https://t.co/EbHTQYTyqM
16:53:28 <arch> anyways, this is getting put on lower priority build. i'm starting on that GTX275 arduino controller constant-power/constant-resistance/constant-current load project
16:53:58 <arch> should be fun, and easily etchable. just uses sot-23 as the smallest pitch parts
16:54:44 <arch> old sub/amp was 50W; this one's 120W :D
16:54:55 <arch> Altec Lansing
17:11:43 <T3sl4> ah, yeah etch can be piss on that
17:12:17 <T3sl4> could still take a try at carving it, but just as well to order in some breakout boards, or the real thing
17:17:48 <arch> i need to order some vssop to soic-10 converters

17:36:34 <arch> god bless china
17:36:51 <arch> this shit probably woulda cost 10x as much if i got it from the us
17:39:00 <arch> i put in a best offer of $7.5 and it was accepted, fyi. you might wanna try something lower than 7.5, but more than 7. yes...i am a cheapskate...
17:39:42 <arch> i tried $7, which got declined immediately; so i tried $7.50. i shoulda tried $7.01
17:39:47 <arch> o well
17:39:51 <arch> still saved a buck
17:42:05 <arch> hehe 16.3c/pop, not bad. taking penny pinching to the max
17:52:37 <arch> they're not soic converters, but rather dip footprint, so it will increase the board area slightly. but at least i won't be limited to really old ICs anymore
17:52:54 <arch> so fucking difficult to get soic8 controllers these days
17:53:29 <arch> general chip shortage has fked up the pricing; goddamn $3/pop for lm3481 these days, like wtf

19:53:36 <Kuschelpony> 600 meters long at 220kV
19:54:00 <Kuschelpony> i should take the good camera and try better angles to see
19:54:09 <T3sl4> three circuits of it, even
19:54:13 <T3sl4> plus however many crossbars

19:54:48 <T3sl4> oh at least one in the background yeah, plus anything out of view
19:55:25 <Kuschelpony> the one oin the background is a pre-crossconnection-circuit before the metering and major switches
19:56:04 <Kuschelpony> the whole station is a kilometer long but half of it between trees on a small hill so not easy to photograph

21:00:08 <doggyrat> hello
21:00:19 <T3sl4> hi
21:00:47 <doggyrat> T3sl4: hello , what are you up for today
21:01:09 <T3sl4> not much, going to bed soon :P
21:02:23 <doggyrat> may be you do have an idea, i would like to build a sound direction detection using two microphones and a cheap cpu like arduino
21:03:49 <T3sl4> in general, i think you'd want something more like a rPi
21:04:23 <T3sl4> or one of the ARM like cortex >M4 things, not quite as powerful as a pi but more than most arduino
21:05:09 <T3sl4> otherwise, an atmega arduino can do more limited things if you don't mind that the discrimination stinks, or doesn't respond well to signals in general, but is best for like impulsive or sinusoidal signals
21:05:16 <doggyrat> the problem i do see that there is always an delay because of checking microphone values if the are high and senting time tamp
21:11:05 <doggyrat> well using amplifiers behind the microphones it should provide a peek that is detectable by any arduino, but i have no knowledge about how relative interrupt pins are
21:11:21 <doggyrat> or if it is better checking values by a loop
21:11:52 <T3sl4> so that would be impulsive i guess
21:12:02 <T3sl4> is this like a sonar thing then or what?
21:12:30 <doggyrat> yes
21:12:38 <T3sl4> cuz like, you just play some music or something, it's not going to know what's going on based on edge timing
21:15:05 <doggyrat> once a microphone has detected a sound it is out of loop and stores the time stamp , as soon as the second microphone sets the time stamp
21:16:21 <doggyrat> by the difference of time it should be possible to detect the direction
