01:21:32 <rust_collector> all the dumb ideas one can have....
01:22:03 <Nothing\> nothing like starting off the day with an argument with a cabbie
01:22:20 <Nothing\> asshole was blocking us in, so we beep the horn and he inches up like a foot, still blocking us in
01:22:34 <Nothing\> so we beep again, wait, beep, finally he moves his ass
01:22:43 <Nothing\> then he has the gall to tell me fuck you
01:23:17 <rust_collector> that is why you should have a very jacked up pickup, I guess
01:23:18 <Nothing\> cuz we're totally in the wrong for him blocking us in and forcing us to cut across 2 lanes of traffic to pull out
01:23:26 * Ampera hugs Nothing\
01:23:34 <Nothing\> well my mom drives an SUV but she doesn't know how to use it
01:23:38 <Nothing\> lol
01:23:42 * Nothing\ hugs Ampera <3
01:23:54 <Nothing\> like, it takes her over a minute just to find her horn
01:24:00 <Nothing\> she's such a non-aggressive driver
01:24:13 <Ampera> how are you doing Nothing\
01:24:18 <Nothing\> me, i'd be out there with a damn crow bar bashing in windshields
01:24:19 <rust_collector> an suv tends to have trouble getting over cars. you need a proper pickup with 38s or more
01:24:29 <Nothing\> Ampera, eh i'm pissy, but otherwise okay
01:24:34 <Nothing\> plus i have to poop but can't
01:24:36 * Ampera pisses on the pisser
01:24:37 <Nothing\> which is ironic
01:24:41 <Nothing\> oh wait a minute
01:24:43 <Nothing\> i'm not pissy
01:24:46 <Nothing\> i'm in a shitty mood
01:24:50 <Nothing\> that's it
01:24:55 <Ampera> I'd say you're just full of shit
01:25:04 <Nothing\> that too, very much so
01:25:15 <Nothing\> i think those 4 apple crisps i ate last week are finally trying to come out
01:25:19 <Nothing\> D:
01:25:22 <Ampera> Friday, last day of doing things until Monday
01:25:23 <Nothing\> trying being the key word
01:25:31 <Nothing\> each apple crisp being nearly 2lbs
01:25:39 <Ampera> You, my friend, are weird.
01:25:48 <Nothing\> i'd just sit down and devour the entire thing in one night
01:26:01 <Nothing\> lol dude i used to do stuff like that all the time
01:26:13 <Nothing\> it's part of how i got diabeetus when i was only 30

01:26:13 <Ampera> I made tuna melts last night.
01:26:18 <Nothing\> yet not overweight
01:26:22 <Ampera> I tried using whole tuna, but that didn't work out as I imagined
01:26:26 <Nothing\> hrm a tuna melt actually sounds pretty good
01:26:29 <Nothing\> or tuna casserole
01:26:33 <Ampera> it wasn't bad, but it was a bit messy to cook, and it didn't come out amazing
01:26:33 <Nothing\> oooh yeah
01:26:49 <Ampera> I'm making chicken, gravy, and mushrooms today with texas toast
01:26:51 <Nothing\> man, my brother's ex made the best tuna casserole
01:27:12 <Nothing\> it's a shame my mom's passed her "mommy" phase and doesn't do much home cooking anymore
01:27:30 <Nothing\> she will do on sundays but that's about it
01:28:11 <Nothing\> oh man, Ampera
01:28:18 <Nothing\> we got a new dining room set the other day
01:28:23 <Nothing\> got an amazing deal on it
01:28:28 <Nothing\> lemme measure the table
01:29:34 <Nothing\> 40x60in without the leaf
01:29:54 <Ampera> nice
01:30:14 <Ampera> I intend to build my own furniture when I move out
01:30:30 <Nothing\> sorry i got cut off
01:30:34 <Nothing\> so it's a table that big
01:30:37 <Nothing\> plus 6 chairs
01:30:39 <Nothing\> only $200
01:30:43 <Nothing\> solid oak, too
01:30:46 <Nothing\> no particle board
01:30:46 <Ampera> nice
01:30:58 <Nothing\> yeah dude, the thing's huge
01:31:01 <Nothing\> the cats love it
01:31:05 <Ampera> so much furniture is chipboard crap these days, it's always nice to see things being made from real wood
01:31:14 <Nothing\> tell me about it dude
01:31:22 <Nothing\> i come from furniture, almost literally
01:31:32 <Nothing\> my dad was a furniture salesman, and his father before him
01:31:43 <Nothing\> not sure what HIS father before HIM did, but you know
01:32:07 <Nothing\> he was probably a farmer since he was some sort of briton or scot
01:32:35 <Nothing\> ah, londonderry apparently
01:33:16 <Nothing\> damn you Ampera
01:33:31 <Nothing\> i only JUST finished winding the tape measure back up from measuring that table for your sake
01:33:56 <Nothing\> i couldn't find a proper tape measure so i just used the sort that a seamstress or tailor would use that doesn't wind back up on its own
01:34:27 <Nothing\> lol oh dude Ampera one thing you've gotta get for your cats
01:34:43 <Nothing\> is one of those things that projects light spots all over your room
01:35:06 <Nothing\> my mom got a christmas themed one that projects trippy snowflake type stuff on the ceiling and my cats go nuts over it
01:35:44 <Nothing\> lol luci kept getting up on the table and standing on her hind legs to try and reach the ceiling, so i picked up her up lifted her up to the ceiling and it just scared the crap out of her
01:36:06 <Nothing\> oh yeah dude, and i think i have my record for my longest cat scratch ever, 8 inches
01:36:38 <Nothing\> i was trying to hold luci and she got skiddish and kicked off of me with her claws and i never wear a shirt so she got my stomach good
01:37:23 <Nothing\> neither cat really likes being held, which is fine by me cuz smokey's turning into fucking jabba the hutt
01:38:06 <Nothing\> he's at least 5x bigger than when we got him
01:38:37 <Nothing\> and apparently maine coons don't reach full size until they're 2 or so, so he's still gonna keep growing
01:38:58 <Nothing\> lol he has these weird tufts of fur between his toes. I've never seen such a thing on a cat before
01:39:53 <Nothing\> why does everybody stop talking when i come in? :P
01:40:58 <rust_collector> well, you do not leave any space to put text....
01:41:43 <Nothing\> rust_collector, tbh part of it is just sorta like throwing a buncha shit on a wall and seeing what sticks
01:41:57 <rust_collector> yep
01:42:02 <Nothing\> in terms of, trying to elicit a response from somebody in here that will turn into a conversation
01:42:29 <Nothing\> and part just me purging my thoughts into the buffer of this channel for reasons that are beyond me
01:42:49 <Nothing\> loneliness maybe
01:43:42 <rust_collector> if you hurry up, you can come with me.

01:45:56 <Ampera> hi TheDude how are you
01:49:38 <Nothing\> huh
01:49:57 <Nothing\> apparently within the next 30 years at least 6 counties in arizona will be uninhabitable
01:50:03 <Nothing\> so how's that different from now?
01:50:19 <Ampera> they probably said that thirty years ago
01:50:29 <Nothing\> i mean, the state has 2 different deserts in it
01:50:51 <Nothing\> Ampera, you ever heard the running joke about sustainable nuclear fusion reactions that we can produce electricity from
01:51:03 <Ampera> yes I have
01:51:06 <Ampera> it's always thirty years away
01:51:09 <Nothing\> ah good
01:51:23 <Nothing\> well i was gonna say "it was 50 years away 50 years ago"
01:51:26 <Nothing\> but yeah, same jist
01:52:02 <TheDude> hey
01:52:15 <Ampera> hi TheDude how are you
01:52:25 <TheDude> alright
01:52:46 <TheDude> the cunts are autodialing my phone again from various european numbers
01:52:56 <Ampera> not the cunts!
01:52:58 <TheDude> need to find some sort of app that automatically blocks their shit
01:53:15 <Ampera> I solve that issue by simply not having a leaked number
01:53:35 <TheDude> there's a local tech forum
01:53:54 <TheDude> and many people are reporting the same problem, there's a huge thread about it
01:54:11 <TheDude> apparently it's quite likely that they're just randomly dialing numbers to see who responds
01:55:40 <Nothing\> why does my body always seem to do the opposite of what i need it to do
01:55:48 <Nothing\> like all morning at the clinic i've had to poop
01:55:52 <Ampera> perhaps you've been possessed
01:56:02 <Nothing\> but as soon as i get home, nope no more poop-need
01:56:18 <Nothing\> Ampera, i've genuinely wondered something similar
01:56:20 <Ampera> I once went an entire weekend, friday to monday, without pooping
01:56:42 <Nothing\> but that i'm being tormented by an evil being of some ephemeral nature
01:57:10 <Nothing\> Ampera, i've gone nearly 2 weeks and had poops bigger than my head
01:57:29 <Ampera> why didn't I think you'd beat me on that
01:57:35 <Nothing\> the worst was when i used to fill the bowl like 4 or 5 times each poop
01:57:47 <Ampera> brings a whole new literal meaning to full of shit
01:57:55 <Ampera> either that or canada has some tiny ass bowls

01:58:00 <Nothing\> doubly so when it'd get clogged on the first flush
01:58:24 <Nothing\> then i've still gotta poop, but have to unclog the toilet before i can continue
01:58:51 <Nothing\> so here i am, using the plunger, desperately trying to liberate this clog with no luck
01:59:31 <Nothing\> finally i resort to just going full strength on it, regardless of how much splashing occurs, jamming coathangers up it, and pouring in copious amounts of liquid soap
01:59:59 <Nothing\> eventually after probably 10 minutes of struggling, i got the clog down and i could finally sit back down and finish pooping
02:00:13 <Nothing\> meanwhile i'm all covered in shit water head to toe
02:00:27 <Nothing\> my bathroom's all covered in shit water cuz the toilet overflowed several times
02:00:45 <Nothing\> but i don't care cuz i've still gotta shit like there's no tomorrow
02:01:14 <Nothing\> then i had to clean the bathroom up before myself, cuz let's face it you're not cleaning up something like that without getting messy
02:01:50 <rust_collector> maybe you should have a chat with hsn
02:01:54 <TheDude> fucking hell
02:02:08 <Nothing\> TheDude, yeah that was one of the worst poops i've ever had
02:02:11 <TheDude> I've had a clogged toilet before, but nothing of this scale
02:02:12 <Nothing\> definitely the messiest
02:02:23 <Nothing\> lol i was almost gonna type messier
02:02:35 <Nothing\> i had a poop so big it turned into a messier object
02:02:51 <Nothing\> (as in the messier catalog of astronomical objects)
02:04:49 <Nothing\> oh sweet
02:05:23 <Nothing\> this updated version of paul falstad's online circuit simulator has operational transconductance amplifiers based on the LM13700
02:05:37 <Nothing\> i have a buncha these chips and i've always wanted to learn how to use them
02:06:06 <Nothing\> i guess that's sorta like an op amp, but not
02:06:26 <TheDude> here's what I've never really figured out
02:06:29 <Nothing\> i'm not even completely sure what transconductance is
02:06:34 <TheDude> why would anyone use the falstad thing?
02:06:45 <TheDude> sure, getting the grips around basic circuitry
02:06:48 <Nothing\> TheDude, i use(d) it for education mostly
02:06:51 <TheDude> but beyond that it's useless
02:07:13 <TheDude> learn to use ltspice and never look back
02:07:38 <Nothing\> yeah, it's great for understanding circuits more intuitively by being able to visualize what's going on and easy probe voltage, current and power, among other things
02:08:09 <Nothing\> plus i can experiment with ideas and still get at least a rough idea of what's gonna happen
02:08:18 <Nothing\> but i keep that use to a minimum
02:08:56 <Nothing\> but the way i see it, if i'm using it for that, so long as i understand it's inaccurate and take the data with a grain of salt it shouldn't be a problem.
02:09:14 <Nothing\> TheDude, plus i've found it's a lot more intuitive to use than spice
02:09:26 <TheDude> the last point is fair
02:09:34 <TheDude> most spice GUIs are absolute shit
02:09:40 <Nothing\> TheDude, like when i started using it, i was so new to electronics, i didn't even know what an ohm was
02:09:40 <TheDude> or they don't even exist
02:09:49 <Nothing\> much less what parts i needed to get started building circuits
02:09:57 <TheDude> LTspice is such a clunking mess
02:10:13 <TheDude> but you kinda sorta learn to love (tolerate?) it
02:10:41 <Nothing\> but by playing around in circuitsim, i was able to learn enough about circuits and electronics/electrics that i knew what parts i needed and finally knew enough to start building circuits in real life
02:10:50 <TheDude> I don't know much about the expensive paid spice software, other than multisim, which is shit
02:10:55 <Nothing\> without circuitmod, i'm not sure i ever would have made that leap
02:11:07 <Nothing\> i have this other software called circuitwizard
02:11:13 <Nothing\> it's kinda... weird
02:11:19 <TheDude> isn't that the altium thing?
02:11:31 <Nothing\> no, i don't believe so. lemme see who makes them.
02:11:36 <TheDude> oh, no, nvm
02:11:51 <Nothing\> i know for parts, it has these MCUs called "genie" as the brand i guess
02:12:19 <Nothing\> which i've never heard of in any other context. But it seems to double as an IDE for such boards. Which are coded in basic of all things.
02:12:26 <Nothing\> Or by way of a flow chart
02:12:32 <Nothing\> very simplistic
02:12:56 <Nothing\> but a lot of the software felt like an advert for those genie boards and chips
02:13:25 <Nothing\> but again, it wasn't completely useless cuz that was my first exposure to MCUs and i was able to see the sorts of things they were capable of doing
02:13:39 <Nothing\> and needless to say, i wanted one asap once i realized the implications
02:14:10 <Nothing\> even if it was justan arduino. Though I'd love to program some variety of 8051/52 some day
02:14:22 <TheDude> the best thing to do, IMO, would be to dive in head-first
02:14:35 <TheDude> no arduino or other turds/shortcuts
02:14:58 <TheDude> get a dev board with something like an atmega
02:15:01 <TheDude> NOT arduino
02:15:05 <Nothing\> indeed, like i was saying to arch the other day day. The best way to improve yourself is to push yourself beyond what you're comfortable with
02:15:16 <TheDude> you want PC.0-PC.8 markings on the board
02:15:21 <TheDude> err
02:15:24 <TheDude> PC.7
02:15:35 <TheDude> not random arbitrary two-digit arduino bullshit numbers
02:15:48 <TheDude> and then follow tutorials that can be found online
02:15:48 <Nothing\> what if i got an atmega and a ch341 usb to serial converter and built my own arduino
02:16:01 <TheDude> and really go through them slowly and try to understand what each command does
02:16:06 <TheDude> no
02:16:12 <Nothing\> lol i know, i was kidding
02:16:18 <Nothing\> i've heard good things about STM32s
02:16:24 <TheDude> buy one AVR ISP programmer
02:16:27 <TheDude> they're dirt cheap
02:16:28 <Nothing\> my only issue is in knowing what kit i need to program it
02:16:36 <Nothing\> both in terms of hardware and software
02:16:41 <TheDude> hold on, let me find something for you
02:16:55 <TheDude> okay, there's one more thing
02:17:05 <TheDude> the cheap AVRs have no good way of debugging
02:17:23 <Nothing\> honestly TheDude i've fiddled with arduinos and it was nothing but a headache trying to get non-native libraries to work
02:17:30 * electrohead hands you a hammer
02:17:30 <Nothing\> or even be recognized by the IDE
02:17:32 <TheDude> you can debug the software inside the IDE with a virtual microcontroller
02:17:35 <electrohead> there you go, debug away :D
02:17:36 <TheDude> FFS
02:17:39 * Nothing\ eats the hammer
02:17:49 <electrohead> lol, g'morning o/
02:17:50 <TheDude> there's the problem with the arduino mindset
02:17:54 <TheDude> hurr durr, just use a library
02:17:58 <TheDude> fuck that, no
02:18:06 <electrohead> everyone has an issue with everything
02:18:16 <electrohead> everyone has their own methods and ways
02:18:18 <TheDude> write your own library for the basic things and learn to use things gradually
02:18:21 <Nothing\> TheDude, well keep in mind the whole reason i went with electronics is because i wasn't very good at programming lol
02:18:30 <Nothing\> oh if only i knew the can of worms i was opening
02:18:33 <TheDude> just slapping together different garbage libraries isn't going to get you anywhere
02:19:04 <Nothing\> lol i also got into it because i suck at math and i didn't realize at the time how much math wos involved in electronics
02:19:04 <TheDude> hate to break it to you, but you'll need at least some basic programming skills to do pretty much anything in electronics these days
02:19:20 <TheDude> at least eevblog Dave's level of skills
02:19:21 <electrohead> math is in everything :p
02:19:38 <Nothing\> TheDude, i've noticed many parellels actually between programming and even just putting logic chips together and what not
02:20:10 <Nothing\> the same sort of process of formulating some sort of algorithm to accomplish a task in a less tedious manner
02:20:37 <TheDude> right
02:20:50 <TheDude> programming is just about efficiently breaking problems down into small chunks
02:21:04 <TheDude> solving those little problems and then putting the pieces together
02:21:06 <electrohead> TheDude: do you write your own libraries?
02:21:11 <Nothing\> TheDude, that's problem solving in a nutshell
02:21:12 <TheDude> of course
02:21:27 <Nothing\> argh damn mystery itching on my hands
02:21:27 <TheDude> Nothing\, right, which is exactly what programming is in the end
02:21:35 <TheDude> you just need to learn the syntax, that's it
02:22:01 <electrohead> Nothing\: woah, hey, do your hands randomly break out, after itching them?
02:22:03 <rust_collector> ok, I guess I am going on a trip, have fun.
02:22:27 <TheDude> bye
02:22:36 * electrohead pokes rust_collector and waves
02:23:29 <electrohead> TheDude: do you have any of your libraries on github/gitlab/etc?
02:23:34 <TheDude> nope
02:23:38 <Nothing\> electrohead, yeah, the more i scratch the more the redness of the rash spreads
02:23:48 <Nothing\> but it responds well to cortisone cream
02:23:49 <electrohead> TheDude: thought so, lol
02:24:13 <TheDude> the sad part about programming is that most of the good stuff is not publicly shared :D
02:24:24 <electrohead> but, it's not really a rash? err, as in, in doesn't get irritated and swells?
02:24:27 <TheDude> just look at the tutorials on the internet
02:24:30 <Nothing\> too bad they took 2.5% cortisone off the market so you can only get 1%
02:24:47 <TheDude> most of them are written by clueless idiots that started fiddling with <subject> like a month ago
02:24:48 <Nothing\> electrohead, nah, it just turns red
02:24:56 <Nothing\> and whatever turns red, gets itchy
02:25:40 <electrohead> I think I have almost the same thing going on, doesn't irritate much, doesn't swell, yet it itches like fuck, gets red, and drives me insane
02:25:48 <electrohead> and it's *always* with dry weather
02:25:53 <Nothing\> yeah, try getting some 1% cortisone cream
02:26:02 <Nothing\> it blocks histamine so, no itchy
02:26:02 <electrohead> I shall, now
02:26:04 <electrohead> thanks
02:26:16 <Nothing\> np, plus it moisturizes the area which is always a plus
02:26:22 <Nothing\> since dry skin can cause itching
02:26:49 <electrohead> TheDude: well, I'd rather not go after any random tutorial, but I do like to find material(s) to learn from
02:27:55 <Nothing\> i've gotta teach my cats to wash me
02:28:02 <electrohead> lol
02:28:13 <Nothing\> one day i dream of being able to strip nude, lie on the floor and just have my cats lick me clean
02:28:20 <electrohead> o.o
02:28:27 * electrohead walks away from this conversation
02:28:37 <TheDude> Nothing\, something like this might be alright
02:28:38 <TheDude> https://www.ebay.com/itm/2020-Development-Board-Kit-for-ATMEL-AVR128-ATMEGA128A-Mega128-bootloader/200949695738
02:28:41 <Nothing\> well you usually get nude when you bath, do you net?
02:28:43 <Ampera> hi electrohead
02:28:45 <Ampera> how are you doing
02:28:48 <TheDude> plenty of circuitry on the board to play with
02:28:48 <Nothing\> and the cat's already nude
02:29:04 <Nothing\> TheDude, hrm i dunno, i'm not so interested in AVRs
02:29:14 <TheDude> and by the time you figure out how to use all of them, you're likely ready to start using something bigger
02:29:27 <TheDude> I recommended AVR because they're simple
02:29:28 <Nothing\> like i said, i'm more comfortable programming assembly on 8051/52s of all other MCUs
02:29:41 <TheDude> oh, I must have missed that
02:29:53 <TheDude> then I'd recommend SiLabs' EFM8 series
02:30:09 <TheDude> 8051 core, modern, fancy peripherals inside
02:31:04 <Nothing\> hrm
02:31:24 <Nothing\> i really wish i could use that 8051 simulator i had for linux
02:32:07 <TheDude> https://gitlab.com/david.j/temperature_regulator/
02:32:16 <coppice> It amazes me how much complex and sophisticated stuff people will put on a chip with an 8051 core
02:32:25 <TheDude> here's a thing I built with it
02:32:38 <TheDude> the code is absolutely rough and dirty, because the deadline was incredibly tight :D
02:33:06 <TheDude> also trying to save those precious clock cycles everywhere, because the timing was tight, too
02:33:26 <TheDude> so as little subroutine calls as possible and such
02:33:43 <Nothing\> but now that i'm no longer relegated to using a Pi 3 as my primary computer i have little to no reason to ever hook it up, much less use it for anything
02:33:51 <Nothing\> maybe play with the GPIO or something, i dunno
02:34:14 <Nothing\> i wouldn't mind probing a signal on a serial output and seeing what that looks like on my scope
02:34:50 <TheDude> speaking of probing digital signals
02:35:26 <TheDude> https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005001621950241.html
02:35:28 <TheDude> buy this
02:35:43 <TheDude> it's a cheap ripoff of the first version of the saleae analyzer
02:35:53 <TheDude> and it's incredibly handy for observing slow digital signals
02:36:41 <electrohead> that first board looks fun to play with
02:36:45 <electrohead> hey Ampera
02:36:48 <electrohead> I'm alright
02:37:08 <TheDude> anyhow, I have to go now
02:37:15 <TheDude> see you, bye
02:37:22 Quit: TheDude ([email protected]) Quit: Leaving
02:37:53 <Nothing\> ah, right on
02:38:03 <Nothing\> and i have an extensive ordering history on aliexpress
02:39:46 <electrohead> Nothing\: get the 16 channel version, costs not too much more, and you get 16 channels instead of 8
02:39:53 <electrohead> saying that, because that's what I did
02:39:56 <electrohead> :p
02:40:09 <electrohead> the knock-off versions work decently well with sigrok, too
02:40:17 <electrohead> mm, do you know about sigrok?
02:41:34 <electrohead> coppice: yeah, it is, and probably because 'it works' hahaha
02:42:15 <electrohead> I remember seeing a teardown/RE video some time ago, of a set top box, and the main 'encryption chip' (forget what it was exactly called) had the 8051 at the center of attention
02:45:59 <K> regarding those cheap 8-channel logic analysers - the pulse view software is somewhat clunky
02:47:39 <K> you might get lucky and get one with older fx2 chip and that still works with saleaes Logic software
02:47:45 <coppice> electrohead: the encryption chip probably only needs the 8051 for simple things like configuration. However, there are lots of chips with 256k or 512k of flash, doing really complex things in the 8051, where programming them in C fills up that flash really fast because the core is so clunky
02:49:06 <Nothing\> lol my cats are going nuts over the squirrels in the backyard
02:49:47 <coppice> we seem to have had a lot less squirrels than usual this year
02:49:52 <Nothing\> smokey's trying to pounce in them trhough the door
02:50:06 <Nothing\> coppice, you get red or grey/brown squirrels where you are mostly?
02:50:32 <coppice> only grey
02:50:42 <Nothing\> yeah, same here
02:51:04 <coppice> we usually see them running along the wooden fences almost every day, but not this year
02:51:08 <Nothing\> apparently back before north america was colonized, the used to migrate by the millions in the spring and fall
02:51:38 <Nothing\> cuz they could make the entire trip through the treetops without ever having to come down and risk predation
02:51:44 <coppice> then they invaded the UK, and drove out the red ones
02:52:05 <Nothing\> but once we started colonizing and stripping the forests, the squirrels didn't have the trees anymore, so the migrations stopped
02:52:26 <electrohead> I had a crazy grey squirrel chomping away at the wooden frame around the one window upstairs, it used to terrorize my ex-girlfriend lol
02:52:56 <Nothing\> the last one recorded in the 60's or 70's some time by a boater who reported millions of squirrels swimming across the body of water he was on, as it was a relatively small body.
02:53:14 <coppice> in the UK they are very happy on the ground. go to any place with trees and short open grass and its full of squirrels.
02:53:47 <Nothing\> yeah butc grey squirrels are invasive to the UK
02:54:03 <coppice> every cemetery in the UK is full of squirrels
02:54:17 <Nothing\> weird
02:54:21 <Ampera> I'd imagine they'd be full of people
02:54:31 <Nothing\> so i forget, do you live in the UK or was this at another point?
02:54:36 <Ampera> I don't know why you'd bury a squirrel in a cemetery
02:54:57 <Nothing\> pet cemetary
02:54:59 <Nothing\> DUH
02:55:04 <Nothing\> what are you? new?
02:55:05 <coppice> although they don't just like quiet undisturbed places. The love parks, because they are happy around people, and people give food
02:55:06 <Ampera> who the fuck has a squirrel as a pet
02:55:14 <Nothing\> Ampera, i've seen it
02:55:27 <Nothing\> not first hand, but i've seen iveodso f people who do
02:55:38 <coppice> Ampera: you don't know what people keep as pets. They squirrel them away
02:58:56 <Ampera> coppice, do you think I give a rat's ass?
02:59:20 <coppice> what? for Christmas?
02:59:44 <Ampera> It's the gift that keeps on gifting.
02:59:53 <coppice> no shit

03:07:07 <Nothing\> lol
03:07:17 <Nothing\> gonna watch robin hood: men in tights with my mum
03:07:22 <Nothing\> haven't seen this in ages
03:07:39 <Nothing\> one of my mel brooks' finest imo
03:07:49 <Nothing\> though there are a bunch i still need to see
03:08:03 <Nothing\> blazing saddles and young frankenstein in particular
03:08:53 <coppice> The ones with Gene Wilder are the best
03:09:10 <Nothing\> was he in dracula: head and loving it?
03:09:19 <Nothing\> cuz i swear he was the orderly at the asylum
03:09:42 <Nothing\> or maybe one of the monty python crew or somebody fmailiar i couldn't put my finger on and the credits failed to identify
03:11:11 <Nothing\> lemme ask you something coppice
03:11:20 <Nothing\> with a bunch power supply, is it okay to let them sink current?
03:12:38 <Nothing\> well i was gonna use the exmaple of putting a 2nd dc source in series with an initial source to create a DC offset but i'm not even sure that would cause it to sink any current. i would think the current would just go trhoughh it
03:12:49 <coppice> most of them won't sink current at all. Some of the older high end bench supplies were expensive because they were 4 quadrant. These days they seem to have disappeared
03:17:59 <K> havent seen 4quadrants anywhere but SMUs
03:18:17 <Nothing\> coppice, i'd imagine to keep the price point down, no doubt.
03:19:11 <Nothing\> also on an unrelated note, in A New Hope, everybody makes jokes about Luke saying he was going to the toshi station to puck up some power converters
03:19:23 <coppice> probably because so few people used that functionality it was just making products too expensive to sell
03:20:03 <Nothing\> frankly i think he was just in the market for an SMPS

04:27:51 <Ampera> and I am very hungry
04:27:59 <Ysjoelfir> We will have..... oh, ok :(
04:28:01 <Ampera> buh, but I still have 90 minutes to go until I can go and cook food
04:28:29 * electrohead makes tuna and offers
04:28:45 * Ysjoelfir innocently blows some of the smells from his BBQ to Ampera
04:28:47 <Ampera> it's a special kinda hungry when you start looking at food on wikipedia
04:28:54 * Ysjoelfir grabs electrohead 's tuna and puts it on his BBQ
04:28:56 * Ampera begins to gnaw on Ysjoelfir
04:29:09 <Kuschelpony> Hello Guri22 how is your circuit going?
04:31:31 <Guri22> I am here to tell you a good news! I finally solved the problem by isolating MAX7219 on a different breadboard and used 2nd 7805 IC to power it.
04:32:31 <Guri22> The only ripples visible now are 100 Hz 70mV peak to peak on
04:32:52 <Nothing\> Guri22, you new here?
04:33:17 <Guri22> No high frequency noise. Although MAX7219's power rail is still messed. Let it be lol.
04:33:20 <Ampera> Guri22, only respond to him as if you were being asked that question in a prison.
04:33:22 <Nothing\> i don't recall seeing you here, but you talk as if you know peolpe here. from the forum perhaps?
04:33:35 <Guri22> Yeah bro!
04:33:41 <Ampera> oh dear
04:33:50 * Ampera prepares another body bag
04:33:53 <Nothing\> ah, well welcome, brother. <3
04:35:00 <Kuschelpony> Nothing, its a followup questuion fropm his first visit yesterday
04:35:10 <Nothing\> ah i see
04:35:26 <Nothing\> i wasn't here for that, so i'm out of my element on this one :)
04:35:35 <Guri22> I am sorry. I didn't notice, I'll respond him personally next time.
04:35:56 <Nothing\> Guri22, lol he was just joking with you
04:36:08 <Guri22> okay :D
04:36:22 <Nothing\> cuz i tend to ramble on well past the point you stopped readin-]
04:36:52 <Ampera> What I was actually expecting was bloody murder, but I guess I'll go disappointed again today
04:37:24 <Kuschelpony> at least i am happy that we could solve the issue, it was then most probably the return current of the LEDs messing up the ground
04:38:32 <Nothing\> weird
04:38:37 <Guri22> Yeah I too believe that
04:38:49 <Guri22> Cheers!
04:38:51 <Nothing\> i half fell asleep and when i woke up i started carrying my keyboard into the kitchen with me-

05:48:05 <Ampera> I mean I suppose it's a hobby, but I wouldn't call it a direct passion

05:57:02 <Nothing> you're always a pleasure to talk to, honestly of all the peolpe in here you are my favourite to talk with
05:57:34 <Nothing> and one of the few i don't mind poking fun at my insecurities about talking too much in here
05:57:51 <Nothing> or rather poking fun at the fact that i do it, not my insecurities so much
05:58:05 <Nothing> i meant more despite my insecurities, i don't mind
05:58:40 <electrohead> Ysjoelfir: did you buy it? lol
05:58:44 <Nothing> cuz i know you're a genuine person and when you talk and act like the good friend you've been to me, it's pretty easy to forget one's insecurities

06:26:36 <Ampera> you've said this before
06:27:00 <Ampera> unfortunate you haven't changed your mind yet, but we can't all be perfect
06:28:52 * electrohead offers scrambled eggs with ham, cheese, and hashbrowns
06:30:05 * Ampera offers chicken in mushrooms in red gravy
06:30:21 <Ampera> * in -> and
06:30:31 <electrohead> just looked at your picture, that looks good

06:30:52 <Ampera> no beer
06:31:21 <electrohead> I'm not giving you one, don't worry lol
06:31:30 <Ampera> I also have cheesy texas toast on the side, which I am dipping into the gravy

06:42:19 <Nothing> and those fridge magnets have a strang enugh pattern of magnetization with alternating lines of north and south running across them

07:13:33 <Ysjoelfir> and I like amber.
07:13:38 <Nothing> surprised that didn't wake me up, the phone's right next to me and i just passedo out cuz i've only had like 2 hours of sleep and i've got mick jagger quantities of sedatives in me
07:13:52 <Ysjoelfir> I still suggest going to bed
07:13:59 <Nothing> ffs wtf
07:14:09 <Nothing> i just cleared the amber alert and there it goes off again
07:14:25 <Ysjoelfir> no idea what that is supposed to be
07:14:38 <Nothing> an amber alert?
07:14:48 <Ampera> my phone doesn't seem to get amber alerts
07:14:55 <Ampera> or there simply just haven't been any, which I doubt
07:15:07 <Ampera> not that I'm upset, as my iPhone does get them, and it's why I now keep that thing on airplane mode
07:15:14 <Ampera> so it doesn't screech at me at three in the morning
07:15:33 <Nothing> it's when a child goes missing, they put out their information and the information of the suspect and send it to every cell phone and smart TV in the area
07:15:50 <Ampera> yes I know what it is
07:15:55 <Ampera> oh
07:15:58 <Nothing> the effect being you get a very loud alert on your cell phone

07:16:01 <Nothing> WTF
07:16:03 * Ampera can't read
07:16:04 <Nothing> there it goes again
07:16:17 <Nothing> how the hell many amber alerts do they need for 1 kid
07:16:25 <Ampera> it's probably the same alert
07:16:29 <Nothing> it is
07:16:36 <Ampera> then turn them off
07:16:38 <Ysjoelfir> ah
07:16:41 <Nothing> oh and this is way the hell in ottawa
07:16:43 <Ysjoelfir> never heard of that
07:16:46 <Nothing> i'm nowhere near ottawa
07:17:09 <Nothing> Ysjoelfir, it's a north american system, i believe they use it in the US as well, me being in Canada
07:17:46 <Ysjoelfir> that might explain why I haven't heard of that
07:17:58 <Nothing> the idea being that the first 24 hours of an abduction are the most crucial. after 24 hours the odds of finding the child alive are much less
07:18:00 <Nothing> asoeitnaoesinhaoesinthoeasinoesaneitohsien
07:18:04 <Nothing> SHUT UP
07:18:09 <Nothing> it just went off again
07:19:06 <Nothing> lol it's funny, any time there's an amber alert, there are always tons of people who actually call 911 to complain about how it woke them up or otherwise disturbed their privileged lives
07:19:51 <Nothing> my one neighbour 2 doors down has a wife who's terminally ill and the ambulance is over there at least once or twice a week
07:20:14 <Nothing> and he's actually had tenants in other townhouses nearby complain about it
07:20:33 <Nothing> like, lodge formal complaints against the guy for having too many ambulances for his sick wife
07:20:40 <Nothing> who the fuck does that?
07:21:18 <Ampera> supposedly NYC got more snow this storm than all of last winter
07:21:30 <Nothing> it shouldn't anymore, but it still never ceases to amaze me how selfish some people can be
07:21:38 <Nothing> Ampera, that crazy dude
07:21:54 <Ampera> Binghamton got 41 inches
07:22:16 <Nothing> Ampera, i remember one year just between here and London (ontario) they got 1-1.5 meters of snow in 24 hours
07:22:25 <Nothing> which is like 6-7.5 feet
07:22:38 <Ampera> Supposedly we got 18 inches, but that's bullshit
07:22:42 <Ampera> we got at least two feet
07:22:57 <Ampera> especially as the neighboring town is reporting 24
07:22:59 <Nothing> they had to call in the airforce to airlift everybody off of the one equivalent of a canadian interstate
07:23:09 <Nothing> as even the snow plows were getting stuck
07:23:38 <Nothing> it's funny cuz it was a forced evacuation, but the truckers didn't wanna leave cuz they were all set up to live in their trucks
07:24:02 <Nothing> they had their DVD players, food, fuel, warmth, even sleeping quarters
07:24:22 <Nothing> but everybody was forced to evacuate
07:37:26 <Nothing> phew
07:37:39 <Nothing> that's it? just 15 minutes?
07:37:47 <Nothing> and here i thought i slept for like an hour or two
07:43:11 <Nothing> ffs and another amber alert

08:28:24 <Nothing> i can see why people would complain, but not why they would call 911 to do it
08:28:27 <Ysjoelfir> and then I came around and woke you up
08:28:49 <Nothing> yeah i feel like i got enough sleep finally
08:29:01 <Nothing> and i'm cold, which means i was sleeping deeply
08:44:52 <Nothing> hrm
08:45:06 <Nothing> woll u stull didn't sleep very long
08:49:32 <Nothing> lol i found a new way to use my exercise bike
08:49:54 <Nothing> doing bicep curls with it holding the handlebars while standing in front of it
08:49:57 <Ysjoelfir> you mean besides ignoring it?
08:50:25 <Nothing> nah i still use it in between the 3-4 days it takes my ass to recover from sitting on the seat
08:51:25 <Nothing> actually i've been trying to think of exercises that would help my ass muscles to grow and give me some more padding back there and realized biking is perfect for that
08:52:04 <Nothing> i used to bike everywhere as a kid through teenager
08:52:44 <Nothing> and i still have very muscular legs, despite being almost entirely sedentary thanks to my anxiety disorder
08:53:28 <Nothing> makes me bounce my leg up and down at a rate of 3-4hz according to my measurements... for at least 10 hours a day
08:54:10 <Nothing> the result being as though i'd done thousands of calf raises a day, which i basically had been
08:55:00 <Nothing> i always wondered what exactly causes it, cause it's not necessarily anxiety. Though anxiety does make it worse

09:18:03 <Nothing> oh, an OTA is just a CCII+?
09:18:54 <Nothing> so then why would this simulator have a CCII+ AND an OTA, though the current conveyor is idealized i think while the OTA is based on the LM13700

12:40:46 <T3sl4> as long as they pay you forit
12:40:53 <Tezzers> Oh yeah yeah defo
12:41:37 <Tezzers> But like, we still haven't hired a new tech to replace the guy that went to another department. So we've got me, one tech, one engineer. Other engineer works 12 hours a week, semi-retired.
12:41:52 <Tezzers> That other tech? He's getting a hip replacement this week.
12:43:20 <Tezzers> So our "We've always had 5-6 guys" team? It's now y'know...2 1/4 of us. And we're way behind because covid on our upgrades. We're playing catch up for our "We're starting up in a month and a half and people are finding all the stuff that broke in the past few months of shutdown" work, on top of trying to work in our upgrades and prototypes.
12:44:09 <Tezzers> I can't work alone, and I can't work nights or weekends without authorization coz there's too much visibility. And my new boss is too new to bend rules, so there's no choice - if I'm working nights and weekends, there's a coworker and there's approved overtime. And this year, there's going to be /a lot/ of it.
12:45:04 <T3sl4> sounds like you're more valuable than ever
12:45:20 <T3sl4> you can work overtime, but i don't suggest working yourself overtime
12:45:44 <T3sl4> you have a lot of room to be lazy, take advantage of it
12:46:06 <Tezzers> Oh, that's already out the window. I was elected as of Monday into an officer position at the volunteer ambulance service. I'm 2021 chief dispatcher.
12:46:52 <Tezzers> On top of juggling like 5 active projects at work right now, and all the other shit that I know is going to spring up as people start turning stuff on and testing.
12:47:32 <Tezzers> It's going to be *NUTS* this year because usually people from all over the world come in to do their annual maintenance and testing and comissioning every year. That ain't happening this year, so we're going to get slammed with requests all at once I bet.
12:50:41 <Tezzers> But this new engineer, new supervisor. He's great. I ask him a question, he finds me an answer. He constantly asks me if there's any work he can take off my hands. He's willing to get hands on. Old supervisor/engineer? Never. Never ever ever. This guy though, came by, he's all the way up the scaffold twisted contorted putting re-cabling some modules that we pulled off. Really miserable shit job.
12:51:30 <Tezzers> Even after I spent a half hour in a meeting discussing what that job actually took, and I was the only one there that did it last year so It'd be good for me to do. He said nope, you got enough shit, I'll take care of it. He's ++

13:45:41 <Nothing\> ugh it's depressing to see videos of you from less than 10 years ago where you look visibly younger
13:46:04 <Nothing\> although i'd wager most of my older look stems from the fact that i'm never clean shaven anymore
13:48:42 <Nothing\> i wonder if the penis candle is visible in this video
13:48:54 <Nothing\> i shoulda taken more pictures of that thing before i moved out
13:50:48 <Nothing\> the landlord's son was an art student, so in the living room of the house was this sculpture of a woman's ass, and on the reverse is a mild relief of her bossom and crotch, but not detailed, just blank details all in this dark, dark green color
13:51:18 <Nothing\> then on top that was the giant head of a penis made of candle wax, about a foot to a foot and a half wide and 2 foot high
13:51:34 <Nothing\> the wick in the center was almost an inch thick
13:51:57 <Nothing\> but with all of the wax dripping down it, it looked like cum. Which I'm sure was on purpose.

19:08:47 <Ampera> I'm grating my hard drive collection and snorting the powder
19:08:49 <Halcyon> Orange dot for those that have re-allocated sectors reported in SMART and green dots for those which are 100% good.
19:11:39 <Halcyon> Also, I remember why I hate Dell servers
19:12:19 <Ampera> but dude
19:12:23 <Ampera> you're gettin a dell
19:13:19 <Halcyon> Yes, I got one from work
19:13:25 <Halcyon> It's newer than my NAS BUT....
19:13:46 Join: LTM ([email protected]) to #EEVblog
19:14:28 <Halcyon> It doesn't support the 8TB drives I have, the SAS card can't be flashed into IT mode (and it doesn't support JBOD mode), I was going to make the boot drive an NVMe SSD, BIOS/UEFI doesn't support booting from it and it has 2 on-board SATA ports, but no provision for power AT ALL.
19:14:42 <Halcyon> So basically, almost useless
19:14:56 Quit: LTM ([email protected]) Quit: http://www.kiwiirc.com/ - A hand crafted IRC client
19:15:54 <Ampera> you have no drive power?
19:16:22 <Ampera> how does the SAS work, backplane?
19:16:32 <Halcyon> Yep
19:16:41 <Ampera> if so you can always just stick the bootloader on a small SAS/SATA drive and then mount root off an SSD
19:16:56 <Halcyon> There are literally no molex connectors anywhere. I would have to bodge something together and solder into something existing
19:17:22 <Halcyon> Yeh the problem there is, I can't use any of the drive bays because the plan was to put my x6 storage drives in there
19:18:24 <Ampera> Why won't the SAS controller do 8TB drives
19:18:28 <Halcyon> No idea
19:18:29 <Ampera> seems quite strange that it won't
19:18:36 <Halcyon> It sees them as 2TB drives, even with the latest firmware
19:18:43 <Ampera> who cares how it sees them
19:18:47 <Ampera> what does Linux see
19:18:57 <Halcyon> Linux/FreeBSD sees them as 2TB as well
19:19:08 <Halcyon> The room for error and corruption is just way too great
19:19:53 <Ampera> what CPUs does it have
19:20:36 <Halcyon> Ermmm, x2 Xeon jobbies can't recall the model now
19:21:15 <Halcyon> X5650's I think
19:21:31 <Ampera> oh, useless
19:21:49 <Halcyon> Still plenty fast for a NAS
19:22:01 <Halcyon> Twice as a fast as the one I have now
19:22:17 <Ampera> my laptop is probably faster
19:22:28 <Halcyon> Oh it most definitely would be
19:22:32 <Halcyon> We're talking 10 year old CPUs
19:22:42 <Ampera> I know, I have an X5650 in my server
19:22:43 <Halcyon> Even still, you don't need much for a NAS
19:22:53 <Ampera> it's a crock of shit
19:23:01 <Ampera> but it was cheap, and gayer than you'll ever be
19:23:16 <Halcyon> Probably
19:23:45 <Halcyon> So my only real solution would be to get another SAS controller and buy a SATA disk on module that doesn't require power
19:23:54 <Halcyon> Not sure if I can be bothered going to the effort
19:24:11 <Ampera> why couldn't you boot from the SAS controller
19:24:23 <Halcyon> Because it would be dedicated to the storage disks
19:24:29 <Halcyon> There are only 6 bays
19:24:37 <Ampera> put the bootloader on one of the storage disks
19:24:56 <Halcyon> I don't want to destroy my existing dataset, I want it left as is
19:25:14 <Ampera> you're damn picky :P
19:25:20 <Ampera> PXE boot then
19:25:21 <Halcyon> :P
19:25:33 <Ampera> you can load GRUB or syslinux easily over PXE
19:25:47 <Halcyon> *sigh* It's too much fuckery
19:25:56 <Ampera> I did it without fuckery
19:26:18 <Halcyon> And it introduces another point of failure which I don't want
19:26:28 <Halcyon> Instead of being a standalone NAS, it then would have to rely on another server
19:26:42 <Ampera> it's gonna have to rely on a router anyways though
19:26:50 <Halcyon> Not really
19:27:18 <Ampera> static IP LAN?
19:27:22 <Halcyon> Yessum
19:27:44 <Ampera> you just like making things difficult on yourself
19:27:49 <Ampera> can you boot off USB
19:27:56 <Halcyon> I can, but it's slow (USB 2.0)
19:27:59 <Ampera> who cares
19:28:05 <Halcyon> Also, consumer USBs are unreliable as fuck
19:28:06 <Ampera> all you need is to load GRUB
19:28:08 <Halcyon> So no thanks
19:28:28 <Ampera> who cares, get a pile of USB sticks and put GRUB on all of them
19:28:36 <Ampera> they're reliable so long as you don't write to them
19:28:52 <Halcyon> Again, couldn't be arsed. I just want a server that works and works reliably. Which my old server does (and has done for 10 years)
19:28:57 <Halcyon> So I'll just keep using that
19:29:13 <Halcyon> Now to think of what to do with this Dell
19:32:42 <Halcyon> Those 6 disks are one of the most important things I have in my house (along with the backups). There is literally irreplacable data on them. Everything else can be replaced.
19:32:57 <Halcyon> If there is a fire, those are the first things I'm going to grab

21:55:01 <Halcyon> electrohead, yeh I was thinking that too, but like all things, it's cloud based which I hate
21:55:10 <electrohead> grr
21:55:11 <Halcyon> I'd prefer just an offline WiFi version

22:06:54 <electrohead> Ysjoelfir: lol
22:07:14 <electrohead> well, let's face it, a lot of these game developers rely on the internet too much, nowadays
