19:28:30 * DogWomble sticks his head round the channel door
19:30:14 <T3sl4> o/
19:35:39 <DogWomble> hey T3sl4
19:42:18 <Ampera> hi DogWomble
19:42:19 <Ampera> how do
19:42:31 <DogWomble> yeah doing ok, how are you/
19:42:39 <Ampera> good enough
19:43:13 <Ampera> I need to shoot my Pentium Pro build vlog at some point
19:43:26 <Ampera> but I need to clear off the tablet I'm using
19:43:29 <Ampera> *table
19:44:27 <DogWomble> yeah, after a weekend at PAX i'm kinda motivated to finish off some of my 8-bit projects
19:44:44 <DogWomble> i want to get at least the model b finishjed
19:44:52 <DogWomble> bbc micro that is
19:49:26 <Ampera> DogWomble, I've always wanted to go to PAX, but it's never been much of a possibility.
19:49:56 <DogWomble> yeah i went to the one in melbourne, it's my first one, always wanted to go and thsi year i could
19:53:10 Join: krish2487 ([email protected]) to #EEVblog
20:05:15 <orbii> i feel like i wouldnt find PAX interesting enough to be worth the travel/accom/flight cost
20:05:24 <orbii> and so many people :/
20:06:49 <DogWomble> yeah for me it was to find the vintage computer stuff, and some of the panels they ran were kinda interesting
20:07:34 <DogWomble> at least the venue ours is at is set up so that if you need to escape the people, you can just head out into the main foyer or courtyard where it tends to be less busy
20:07:35 <Ampera> For me it would be viable if it was done in NYC, all I'd need then is a hotel
20:08:41 <orbii> vintage computer stuff <3
20:09:37 <orbii> i'm not much of a gamer, or part of gaming culture - so it's not really targeted at me anyway
20:11:00 <Ampera> gaming culture
20:11:03 <orbii> i need to find a good computing/security/electronics thing to visit.
20:11:06 <Ampera> gg
20:11:22 <DogWomble> yeah, i'm more of a casual gamer myself
20:11:35 <Ampera> you guys trying to make my have a fucking stroke?
20:11:38 <Ampera> *me
20:12:19 * orbii gives Ampera a strange look
20:12:26 <orbii> did we do something wrong?
20:12:54 <Ampera> NGGGGH

20:53:06 <K> hello
20:53:14 <steve30> hi
20:53:17 <orbii> hey
20:55:31 <DogWomble> hi k
20:55:51 * Ampera goes to put on a new shirt
20:56:15 <Ampera> /well it's probably not that cold outside, I can likely deal with a t-shirt/
20:56:21 * Ampera goes to check temperature
20:56:23 <Ampera> *is 41*
20:56:25 <Ampera> welp

21:13:53 <orbii> mmmm jalapenos on pizza is so great
21:19:53 Quit: ThunderSqueak ([email protected]) Quit: Leaving
21:22:37 <DogWomble> pineapple on pizza is great, i don't care what anyon e says
21:22:43 <DogWomble> well hawaiian pizza at least :)
21:23:02 <orbii> i dont mind it, at all.
21:23:20 <orbii> i'm pretty chill with trying new flavors tho
21:23:35 <DogWomble> i jsut know pineapple on pizza is very divisive
21:23:41 <orbii> it definitely is, yes.
21:23:43 <DogWomble> on certain pizzas, it's great, on others not so much
21:23:48 <DogWomble> hawaiian it's perfect for
21:23:54 <orbii> really wanna throw things - hawaiian with banana ;)
21:24:08 <orbii> (and pineapple, obvs)
21:31:16 <T3sl4> mmm, jalapeno pineapple
21:31:24 <T3sl4> stuffed with cream cheese and wrapped with bacon, say?
21:37:55 <orbii> T3sl4: sounds awesome
21:42:59 <DogWomble> that could be an interesting expedriment
21:43:22 <DogWomble> if i could find somewhere that did that, i'd probably try that at least once
21:45:04 <K> totaly bananas!
21:46:50 * steve30 curls up on T3sl4's keyboard
21:47:19 * T3sl4 pets steve30 since he can't seem to type very well anymore
21:48:13 <steve30> *purr*
21:51:59 <coppice> so, we measure steve30's curl and his div for completeness
21:53:16 <T3sl4> good idea, i'll integrate you into the procedure
22:00:28 * orbii grumbles about the lack of availability for wire spool racks in .au
22:01:19 <T3sl4> it's called dowel
22:01:49 <orbii> not really, no
22:02:34 <orbii> stuff like https://i.imgur.com/f6bnRsD.jpg
22:02:46 <orbii> readily available in US/CA, buggered if i can find any here.
22:03:13 <orbii> and i'd rather not make my own
22:03:31 <K> suffering cleanses the spirit!
22:03:49 <orbii> only ones i can find are $$$$ and designed for industrial use :/
22:04:03 <orbii> well, i must be cleansed af
22:04:38 <K> a need for spool rack seems very close to industrial setting to me
22:05:46 <coppice> orbii: that's called 3 dowels
22:05:51 * orbii eyerolls
22:06:04 <K> dowels for eye-rolls
22:06:18 <orbii> as above, i have no interest in making my own solution
22:06:40 <coppice> those things are make for shop display. perhaps display makers will have them where you are
22:07:06 <T3sl4> good idea, maybe you're just looking in the wrong place, maybe they're in the aisle with the pegboard
22:07:07 <orbii> they're not actually
22:07:13 <orbii> the ones i find dconsistently in the US/CA are for home/garage use
22:07:23 <orbii> displays here are typically for the floor or wall
22:07:29 <orbii> and much much larger
22:07:42 <orbii> and yes, i could buy those - for AUD400-500+ - and i dont have the room for it
22:08:19 <K> hm, alibaba has only peg variants, meant for threads
22:08:25 <K> and aliexpress
22:09:29 <orbii> hell, harbor freight sell this stuff
22:09:33 <orbii> $40USD
22:09:37 <orbii> with wire included
22:09:55 <orbii> https://www.harborfreight.com/400-ft-wire-storehouse-61527.html
22:11:40 <K> 4 kilos
22:11:47 <T3sl4> that won't even cover the amount of copper pictured
22:11:55 <T3sl4> might not even cover if it's CCA
22:12:04 <K> heh
22:12:31 <orbii> https://www.amazon.com/GRIP-43117-Assortment-Steel-Various/dp/B078NZJF5H https://www.amazon.com/43111-12-Spool-Automotive-Assortment-Steel/dp/B00XZOD93S/
22:12:43 <orbii> none if it even ships here :/
22:12:43 <coppice> T3sl4: look at the lengths on the labels. those spools must be mostly plastic
22:12:58 <orbii> and i'd wager it's CCA
22:13:16 <coppice> it does specifically say copper wire
22:13:22 <K> zinc plated steel housing eh
22:13:43 <K> steel is heavy
22:13:59 <coppice> not when its 5um thick
22:14:18 * Ampera pokes Halcyon
22:14:31 <Ampera> The advantage of it being 41 out is my water bottle is nice and ice cold
22:14:38 <Ampera> but that was a pretty nice 3 miles
22:15:14 <T3sl4> would imagine the wire is heavier gauge than the steel
22:15:29 <coppice> 10um?
22:16:48 <T3sl4> something like that
22:17:20 <coppice> why do they water cool the cables at EV charging stations? I know water is really effective as a coolant, but wouldn't some insulating liquid be a lot more tolerant of weaping joints?
22:17:53 <Ampera> I didn't even know they did watercool EV charging cables
22:18:26 <coppice> I think a cable thick enough for 150kW and 250kW chargers would be too stiff without cooling
22:19:16 <coppice> I doubt its just to save copper
22:19:44 <orbii> too stiff, and probably too heavy for some patrons
22:19:52 <T3sl4> they get warm, but i didn't notice if they get warm enough to suggest there's a lack of metal in there, or a need for cooling
22:20:05 <T3sl4> it's done at stupid volts, which obviously helps
22:20:13 <Ampera> you're a stupid volt
22:20:15 * Ampera hugs T3sl4
22:20:18 <orbii> google says "Liquid cooling allows you to reduce the cable weight by about 40 per cent. We identified that by cooling the connector itself internally, instead of just the cable, we could keep the temperatures as low as possible"
22:20:21 * T3sl4 vrooms automotively
22:20:26 <coppice> T3sl4: its only a few hundred volts, so there are a lot of amps
22:20:36 <T3sl4> 50A doesn't need all that much copper, and the cables are beefy
22:20:59 <orbii> "Cannon’s Cooled ultra-fast charger is a liquid-cooled connector, cable and cooling unit that enables charging at a level of 500A at 1000V, potentially delivering a 60-mile charge in as little as three to five minutes" .. damn
22:21:18 <T3sl4> there you go
22:21:19 <coppice> T3sl4: I think you missed a zero
22:21:35 <orbii> "Conventional cables rated to carry 350A or more would be heavier and difficult to handle in other ways and the connector pins need liquid cooling at high amperage."
22:22:15 <coppice> I'm amazed those connectors are not causing a lot more trouble as they age and get dirty/tarnished
22:22:45 <Ampera> y'all EV yobs are getting nuts with them numbers
22:23:17 <T3sl4> water can sink a lot of heat
22:23:39 <orbii> are they using water, or a proper coolant?
22:23:57 <coppice> water is a first class coolant
22:23:58 <T3sl4> how is water improper
22:24:02 <K> tears of coal magnats
22:24:09 <K> and oil
22:24:20 * T3sl4 magnate-izes K
22:24:23 <Ampera> water is the coolest coolant
22:24:32 <T3sl4> what else would you use? liquid ammonia?
22:24:34 <orbii> eh. just thinking about freezing issues with water, and better conductivity of other liquids (or even water mixed with other things)
22:24:34 <Ampera> but can be rather aggressive and corrosive
22:24:37 <coppice> I assume they have glycol or something mixed in
22:24:53 <Ampera> oil is also a very common and popular coolant
22:25:01 <T3sl4> what does glycol do to the conductivity? or, to the solubility of ionic salts?
22:25:06 <K> mineral oil?
22:25:10 <Ampera> various oils
22:25:18 <K> essential!
22:25:22 <Ampera> but mineral oil is popular as it has a lower viscocity
22:25:25 <T3sl4> Ampera: oil has like 1/5th the heat capacity and awful conductivity, it's very inefficient
22:25:34 <coppice> orbii: water has a temperature range issue, requiring anti-freeze, but few liquids have a better heat capacity
22:25:35 <Ampera> yes, but it doesn't corrode, and it lubricates
22:25:38 <Ampera> so
22:25:45 <K> won't freeze though
22:25:47 <T3sl4> you lubricate
22:25:48 <Ampera> yeah I'm not saying they should or do use it, I'm just saying things
22:25:58 * Ampera slobbers all over T3sl4, greasily
22:26:12 * T3sl4 heats up, frying Ampera in their own juices
22:26:20 <Ampera> cor
22:26:25 <coppice> more oil to overcome is cooling performance would probably increase the weight too much
22:26:25 <K> wireless charging for EVs would be wonderful!
22:26:34 <K> (ducks)
22:26:38 <Ampera> it would be
22:26:38 <coppice> try ultrasound
22:26:43 * T3sl4 whips K with a litz cable
22:26:45 <Ampera> and it exists too
22:26:49 <orbii> i imagine plain water would be the cheapest with the best heat capacity/conductivity
22:26:59 <Ampera> T3sl4's namesake would have quite a lot to say about it too
22:27:01 <coppice> wireless charging is being used for buses
22:30:21 <T3sl4> i wonder how many pounds of litz and ferrite they need to add to the frame to support that
22:31:32 <T3sl4> or for you UKians, how many pounds
22:33:03 <coppice> I don't know if China has any large scale wireless bus charging, but there are pilot schemes in Korea, China and other places, to put short bursts of energy into the buses as they stand at bus stops. The system they are using in China lowers a coupiling assembly to the road when the bus stops. From what I heard their biggest problem is getting the buses consistently in the right spot when the bus stop area is busy
22:34:35 <T3sl4> something where a split transformer comes up to it would be fine, as long as there's a shutter or something to keep it from getting dirty and there's a guide to center it
22:34:54 <T3sl4> sounds like they don't want to put that much hardware in there, or that it would be unreliable that way
22:49:11 <coppice> I think the demos that BMW have done for a wireless charger in your garage show the car self driving to position itself accurately above the charging panel
