07:11:34 <Ampera> Halcyon_, very sorry I didn't show up, the school's net was fucked
07:11:34 <Ampera> since they presumably hire monkeys as sysadmins
07:11:34 <Ampera> so I know you're in bed. Don
07:11:34 <Ampera> 't buy me a surface type cover, I'm already buying one off ebay. They're hideously expensive on Amazon (90 bucks), and I wouldn't want to ask for that
07:11:34 <Ampera> I can afford it, most of my money is goof off money I spend on junk anyways.
07:11:34 <Ampera> For right now the keyboard is functional, and if I flex the deck I can get the touchpad to click, so I'm alright for now.
07:11:34 <Ampera> There's also a big honking touch screen so
07:11:34 <K> are you touching the screen?
07:11:34 <Ampera> yes.
07:11:34 <Ampera> In other news I am currently doing okay on sleep, but that can totally change on a whim.
07:11:34 <Ampera> Sitting and listening to someone talk very easily puts me to sleep when I've had none, but I'm keeping up

20:15:18 <ThunderSqueak__> hi there

20:19:53 <Halcyon_> What time is it?
20:22:26 <Halcyon_> steve30: I just watched a video on UK trains. Apparently you guys have all these different cards like Oyster, Key, Freedom pass, but they can only be used at certain stations/lines. What the hell?
20:51:23 Quit: DHess_US ([email protected]) Ping timeout: 121 seconds
20:52:28 <ThunderSqueak__> its almost 2am
20:52:36 <ThunderSqueak__> anyway I should go to bed, dozed off again
20:53:15 Quit: ThunderSqueak__ ([email protected]) Quit: Leaving
21:14:09 <coppice> Halcyon: the cards are associated with different regions. E.g. Oyster cards work on all London Transport underground trains and buses. That's pretty much the same as most countries
21:31:31 <Halcyon_> Coppice: It seems so confusing
21:31:52 <Halcyon_> Here we have 1 contactless card for all areas and if you want, you can use your credit or debit card
21:32:03 <Halcyon_> There are no "zones" just fares by way of kilometers
21:33:08 <Halcyon_> Like for example, what if I wanted to travel from London to an outer suburb?
21:34:58 <coppice> Halcyon: From central London to the outer suburbs you use an Oyster card. The zones have nothing to do with payment methods. They are charging zones. Like many big cities London charges at a higher rate for travel near the centre, especially during rush hour periods
21:35:23 <coppice> sorry, you can use an Oyster card. there are other payment methogs
21:35:45 <Halcyon_> Right, but what about those stations that don't accept Oyster? What's with that?
21:36:16 <coppice> all London Transport stations accept Oyster, as well as all the London Transport buses
21:37:08 <coppice> Halcyon: does your card work on all transport across your entire country?
21:37:18 <Halcyon_> No, just within the state
21:37:31 <coppice> Its the same with Oyster
21:37:58 <coppice> well, pretty much. the national trains going into London don't accept Oyster
21:37:59 <Halcyon_> Right, got ya
21:39:55 <Halcyon_> Although it seems like AU is going mostly credit/debit card
21:40:08 <Halcyon_> I don't see the point of having a seperate travel card to be honest
21:40:24 <Halcyon_> Unless it's a special one for staff or pensioners etc...
21:41:48 <coppice> Halcyon: in some places, like HK, you can use the transport card for lots of small value non-transport purchases, which the UK doesn't do. That seems to be why HK does not contactless Visa cards for small purchases, like the UK has.
21:43:14 <Halcyon_> Contactless credit/debit is used by most people here. Cash is a dying thing and cheques (although still available) are rarely used. I was chatting to my local coffee shop owner and he said about 70-75% of his customers use card.
21:43:23 <Halcyon_> I personally don't carry cash
21:44:09 <Halcyon_> I'm just curious to see how other countries conduct business. It's interesting. I know the US are big on cash and cheques still.
21:44:35 <coppice> I carry cash in the UK, but I don't use it much. I find I still need to have some to deal with places having faulty equipment.
21:44:41 <Halcyon_> As far as I know, you can't get a bank account without a chip card here these days. Even the mag stripe is being phased out.
21:45:26 <coppice> the mag stripe can't be phased out, as its the only thing that works internationally
21:46:25 <Halcyon_> As a payment method here, if you try to swipe your card, you have to insert it first. It won't allow you to use the magstripe on the first attempt. If it detects an issue with the chip, then it allows mag/signature.
21:46:38 <Halcyon_> It errors out otherwise
21:47:01 <Halcyon_> It was done that way to stop skimming and signature fraud
21:48:00 <coppice> so a foreigner has to insert the card and get a failure first?
21:48:42 <Halcyon_> *shrug*, I'd imagine there is a field written to the card that only exists on chip/contactless cards, if it detects that, it errors out.
21:49:17 <coppice> the foreign card will probably have a chip in it these days, but it won't be compatible
21:49:42 <Halcyon_> Surely chips in band cards conform to an international standard?
21:49:45 <Halcyon_> *bank
21:50:02 <Halcyon_> Certainly Visa and Mastercard do
21:51:05 <coppice> When they put chips in our HK Visa cards I had to get my car replaced quite frequently. I suspect this might relate to have the card in my pocket while doing ESD/EMC testing
21:51:21 <Halcyon_> Hah, possibly
21:51:41 <Halcyon_> I know I can use my regular bank card overseas as normal as it's a Visa Debit
21:51:51 <Halcyon_> Works online as well
21:52:02 <Halcyon_> Most cards issued here are the same
21:53:41 <coppice> The Visa and Mastercards have some commonality in their chip arrangements, but also some differences. For example, in the UK they use a system called chip+pin, where a PIN is always required to go with the card, and is verified against the chip. HK cards do not have the PIN. When I used a HK credit card in the UK, it sometimes caused hassle because of this difference
21:54:11 <coppice> they ended up having to swipe the card
21:54:34 <Halcyon_> We have a PIN requirement here if the transaction is over AUD$100, or if you're using an ATM.
21:55:10 <coppice> ATMs always required a PIN, although the length of that PIN changes from place to place
