00:07:25 <coppice> studying detergents?
00:08:56 <Ampera> eyy, expra works
00:09:02 <Ampera> link isn't too bad either from my school
00:09:13 <Ampera> latency is questionable, but besides that

06:34:15 <Halcyon> Hey Ampera
06:43:46 <Ampera> Hi Halcyon
06:43:50 <Ampera> how do?
07:01:20 <rust_collector> and BOOM! is morning
07:01:27 <steve30> o/
07:02:14 <rust_collector> hello, mr steve
07:02:14 <EEVBlog> Hello there, rust_collector!
07:02:24 <rust_collector> arrgh
07:04:27 <steve30> hello, EEVBlog
07:04:46 <rust_collector> ok, so it is just me....
07:04:46 <steve30> aww, he doesn't like me
07:04:52 * steve30 waves to rust_collector
07:05:10 <rust_collector> so, how are things out there on the island?
07:06:10 <rust_collector> still wedging chain between your sprockets?
07:06:59 <steve30> I got some more new parts for my bike. Need to sort that out this weekend.
07:07:26 <rust_collector> ok, so what is your solution?
07:07:49 <steve30> Use Shimano chainrings
07:08:13 <rust_collector> are they wider? or do they have less space between them?
07:09:13 <steve30> The space between the teeth on one ring and the teeth on the other ring is the same. But they are shaped in such a way that there is not enough gap for chains to get stuck in between
07:09:40 <rust_collector> heh, interesting
07:11:00 <rust_collector> I think, if I was going to buy a bike, I would get one with the gears inside the hub. I am not racing or anything, so I think they would do ok
07:11:22 <steve30> Hub gears are a nice idea. Never tried one though.
07:12:56 <rust_collector> I had a 3 speed version when I was a kid, they did ok, but did not have much gearing, so made little difference to not having gears at all. But mom got one, with 5 or 6 gears, and that was very usable
07:14:55 <rust_collector> I am sure they are pretty expensive to fix, if you grenade them, but I have not seen that happen yet. I think most issues are with badly adjusted cables
07:16:19 <steve30> I'm not familiar with how hub gears work actually
07:16:47 <rust_collector> they are little planetary gears. pretty fun to look at
07:17:37 <rust_collector> works sort of similar to the gears in a drill
07:37:32 * T3sl4 hugs steve30

21:36:05 <steve30> \o
21:36:17 <rust_collector> hola
22:03:54 <rust_collector> hmmm, it is raining. I don't want rain today
22:04:00 <Halcyon> Aw
22:04:40 <rust_collector> to make me feel better, I will buy some crap from china
22:06:42 <K> that'll show him!
22:06:44 <K> (it?)
22:06:59 <rust_collector> right
22:07:05 <K> what gender is rain, anyways?
22:07:50 <rust_collector> ea was male, I think, and he did afaik, all things to do with water

22:09:25 <Guest|32895> hi
22:09:51 <rust_collector> hey
22:32:48 <cheater> when using a spectrophotometer, does the monochromator inside it only produce a few discrete wavelengths, or is it continuous or at least a large amount (thousands)?
22:41:51 <Halcyon> Oh gees
22:42:01 <Halcyon> T3sl4 ?
22:42:45 <T3sl4> yes
22:43:24 <Halcyon> cheater's message
22:43:31 <Halcyon> I figure you know stuff
22:43:33 <T3sl4> cheater: which kind? some use a diffraction grating and image the spectrum at once
22:43:54 <T3sl4> if it's a swept monochromator then the answer lies in the name, one-color-ator
22:45:26 <cheater> T3sl4: how does a swept one work?
22:45:51 <T3sl4> what kind of monochromator
22:45:55 <cheater> does it produce all colors in sequence by changing wavelength?
22:46:02 <cheater> no specific kind just reading up on monos
22:47:04 <T3sl4> yeah
22:47:13 <cheater> how does it do that?
22:47:15 <cheater> the sweep
22:48:25 <T3sl4> depends
22:48:53 <T3sl4> optical filters take many forms
22:49:04 <T3sl4> some are variable by angle or geometry
22:53:36 <T3sl4> ahhhh, that was an adequately spicy slice of jalapeno
22:53:58 * T3sl4 slaps Halcyon with a fresh hamburger
22:54:27 <Halcyon> Nom
22:56:54 <cheater> T3sl4: i don't see how that changes laser wavelength though
22:57:05 <T3sl4> what do lasers have to do with it
22:57:54 <cheater> i thought monochromators used lasers to get the color of something
22:57:55 <T3sl4> illumination is usually a tungsten source
22:58:03 <cheater> i mean the non-diffraction-grating ones
22:58:08 <cheater> ok
23:02:11 <T3sl4> but yeah, a tunable laser would be fine as well, down to nonlinearity like fluorescence and raman lines
23:13:16 <coppice> those raman lines really noodle about
23:37:36 <T3sl4> ya mon
23:59:45 <rust_collector> ok, the rain feels much better now
