04:14:08 <T3sl4> or, parts of it
04:17:50 <rust_collector> looks like you broke it...
04:18:47 <T3sl4> no sign of physical damage, but it read 0 ohms all ways, didn't seem much else to do.
04:19:20 <rust_collector> mmhmmmmm
04:21:18 <steve30> Can you replace it?
04:22:55 <coppice> I notice some signs of physical damage
04:23:16 <rust_collector> yeah... I am pretty sure someone has done something to that
04:24:07 <rust_collector> but ok, I am not an elec...uhmm...nerd
05:12:00 <T3sl4> i mean i broke it in half, it wasn't like that in circuit :P
05:12:08 <rust_collector> oh
05:22:16 <coppice> so, the problem is vandalism
05:38:38 <rust_collector> must be those gangster rappers
05:49:59 <steve30> T3sl4, What monitor are you using in the meantime?
05:50:29 <T3sl4> my 1280x1024 LCD
05:54:05 <rust_collector> hmmm. wife is preparing a new tv bench. I think I might get my old computer back.
05:54:08 <rust_collector> YAY!
05:55:01 <steve30> I've just been tidying my floor by putting spare cables and PSUs and multimeters into bags
05:55:44 <rust_collector> I have space, if that would help
05:56:53 <steve30> does your wife have you old computer?
05:57:32 <rust_collector> yep. she used it hooked up to the tv, for netflix and crap.
05:58:31 <steve30> ah
05:58:46 * steve30 learnt to never date anyone who has netflix or equivalent.
05:58:51 <rust_collector> It is getting old, but it is an ok machine, at least for my use. uhm, hp elite 8200, I think it was
06:01:28 <rust_collector> she likes watching those series things
06:02:17 <rust_collector> I think the last thing I watched, was random episodes of dr house, or what it was called.
06:06:18 <rust_collector> anyway. I made pizza, I dumped in leftover salad, and all the random things I found in the fridge. This could be interesting
06:14:16 <steve30> Maybe season it with a sprinkling of rust :)

08:41:30 <Halcyon> Mmmm paprika
08:43:49 <rust_collector> https://tastehungary.com/journal/paprikas-csirke-paprika-chicken/
08:47:40 <Halcyon> That looks delicious
08:48:07 <Halcyon> I'm going to try that
08:48:13 <rust_collector> just remove the part that says "or oil" that is just wrong
08:48:25 <Halcyon> So, animal fat only?
08:48:25 <rust_collector> use lard
08:48:43 <rust_collector> not just any animal fat, just lard
08:48:56 <Halcyon> Lard isn't common in cooking here, it's either oil and/or butter. I would have to specifically go out and buy lard.
08:49:07 <Halcyon> Although I use duck fat for potatos
08:49:18 <rust_collector> same here. I have to go to sweden or denmark to find it
08:50:20 <Halcyon> I think my local grocer stocks it, but I've never cooked with it
08:50:53 <rust_collector> well, it is great for some things.
08:51:16 <rust_collector> you can even just put a slice on bread, if you have to get going
08:52:09 <Halcyon> Oh I don't know about that
08:52:11 <rust_collector> But imo, it is great for frying things that you want crispy, or in "heavy" stews
08:52:19 <Halcyon> Molten animal fat kind of puts me off a bit
08:52:41 <Halcyon> I prefer butter on toast (never margarine, real butter)
08:52:48 <coppice> Halcyon: where do you get your duck fat?
08:53:00 <Halcyon> The grocer/supermarket
08:53:08 <rust_collector> hah
08:53:16 <rust_collector> grows on trees
08:53:40 <Halcyon> https://www.woolworths.com.au/shop/productdetails/929292/always-fresh-medi-french-duck-fat
08:53:44 <coppice> even duck meat is a pain to find in the UK. we can't get duck fat as a product (rather than as part of a duck) at all
08:54:28 <Halcyon> We're rather lucky in Australia, we have such an abundance of various foods in most areas. I live in a particularly "foody" area so they tend to stock more of the harder to find things.
08:54:46 <Halcyon> Even if you're just after cheese, the local supermarket has over 50 different kinds
08:55:04 <Halcyon> https://www.woolworths.com.au/shop/productdetails/794705/yorkfoods-lard
08:55:06 <Halcyon> They have lard too
08:55:11 <rust_collector> When my cousin was learning to read, he thought his box of mixed spices had antelope fat lumps in it. Later we found out it said anti clumping agent, or something
08:55:24 <Halcyon> Hahahah!
08:55:36 <coppice> our local supermarkets have 50 kinds of cheese. they have 50 kinds of toilet tissue, too
08:55:39 <Halcyon> Got to have a bit of antelope with your spice
08:55:54 <Halcyon> I order my TP online
08:56:00 <Halcyon> Which reminds me, I need to re-stock
08:56:03 <rust_collector> 80 grit
08:56:53 <rust_collector> I think it is interesting, seeing the other side of stores, and what they have, and how much
08:57:16 <coppice> Halcyon: lard is easy to find in the UK. Suet is also easy to find, but becoming less common than it used to be
08:57:21 <Halcyon> Coppice: I watch Mike Jeavons quite a bit and although I don't think him and his wife are exactly "foodies", I'm surprised at some of the things he says. He did an episode once where they required some kind of cheese, I think it as Provolone and they couldn't find it
08:57:51 <coppice> We can get provolone in the local Tescos
08:57:52 <Halcyon> Suet it common, again never cooked with it myself
08:58:12 <coppice> suet is amazing stuff. it makes some things, like dumplings, super light
08:58:13 <Halcyon> I would have thought so too, Provolone is fairly common
08:58:30 <Halcyon> Suet is mainly flour isn't it
08:58:39 <rust_collector> suet is like cow lard
08:58:42 <Halcyon> With some animal fat and emulsifiers
08:59:12 <rust_collector> (afaik)
08:59:21 <coppice> Halcyon: there are many very traditional people in the UK who eat a very restricted diet, and really don't know where other stuff might be obtained.
08:59:41 <Halcyon> Is there a reason for it Coppice?
08:59:53 <coppice> Suet is the hard fat around lumpy points on the skeleton, and especially protecting the kidneys
09:00:01 <Halcyon> I mean I look at Mike Jeavons' videos and apart from his week-on's, what he eats tends to be quite boring.
09:00:42 <Halcyon> It also bothers me how much his wife over-cooks chicken
09:01:47 <coppice> Halcyon: I don't know who Mike Jeavons is. Many people in the UK regards anything their grandparents didn't eat as exotic, and either only for special occasions, or to be avoided
09:02:07 <Halcyon> Meat and veg seems to be common
09:02:15 <Halcyon> I only cook that if I'm being lazy
09:02:38 <rust_collector> I thought the food rule in england was that it has to be boiled

09:04:09 <Halcyon> Oh ohh, this will make the natives restless
09:19:13 <DogWomble> rust_collector, unless it's scotland, in which case it's deep fried\
09:19:36 <rust_collector> oh right
09:19:57 <rust_collector> does ireland have food at all?
09:20:18 <DogWomble> well they did have potatoes for a while
09:20:42 <coppice> rust_collector: there is no rule that everything has to be boiled. many things are fried or baked. The rule is that IF something is boiled it must be MASSIVELY overboiled
09:21:15 <Halcyon> Law is you have to have roast on a Sunday in the UK, you go to jail if you don't ;-)
09:21:44 <T3sl4> Halcyon, way to jump the shark in literally the first line
09:21:45 <coppice> We have roast meals on random days
09:21:47 <rust_collector> I could probably be a master chef in england-land.
09:21:54 <T3sl4> "The number of alien, repeating radio blasts"
09:21:57 <Halcyon> I'm kidding coppice :P
09:22:04 <T3sl4> could they be any more obvious
09:22:30 <Halcyon> T3sl4, well I guess they are "alien" just not generated by "aliens"
09:22:54 <coppice> Halcyon: its nothing to kid about. Some families treat roast on Sunday like Catholics treat fish on Fridays
09:22:55 <T3sl4> "astronomic source" would be less pandering than "alien"
09:23:09 <Halcyon> Holy crap: https://www.goodfood.com.au/recipes/loaded-caprese-toasties-with-pesto-onion-jam-and-serrano-ham-20190913-h1i0at
09:23:14 <Halcyon> I want a toasted sammich now
09:23:52 <rust_collector> pest-o
09:23:54 <Halcyon> Coppice: I'm not sure I could eat the same thing like clockwork
09:24:03 <Halcyon> I would get pretty darn sick of it
09:24:17 <rust_collector> nah, there are many kinds of pizza
09:24:20 <DogWomble> Halcyon, i had a toasted ham and cheese croissant for breakfast :)
09:24:28 <Halcyon> Yum
09:24:44 <Halcyon> I have to go out to the hardware store shortly Tim, I might pick one up on the way home :P
09:25:04 <Halcyon> Also sorry I missed you last night, I had people drop in
09:25:07 <Halcyon> Then it turned into dinner
09:25:08 <rust_collector> get some gulai otak. I bet you can get that down there
09:25:43 <Halcyon> Cattle brain?
09:25:52 <rust_collector> yea
09:25:59 <rust_collector> soup-stew thing
09:26:01 <Halcyon> I'll pass thank you
09:26:18 <coppice> Now we need to choose a meal for Sunday dinner
09:26:33 <Halcyon> I'm looking for inspiratio myself Coppice: https://www.goodfood.com.au/recipes
09:27:22 <rust_collector> I vote for cabbage rolls
09:27:29 <Halcyon> I love cabbage rolls
09:27:59 <rust_collector> maybe filled paprika
09:28:15 <rust_collector> with rice/meat/spices inside
09:28:25 <rust_collector> or, a slice of bread with cheese
09:28:31 <Halcyon> My mum makes something similar, I should find out what she puts in them
09:28:42 <Halcyon> I know it's beef mince and rice, not sure about what else goes in
09:29:08 <coppice> Halcyon: that page has a strange spin on a SiChuan classic: ma po tofu
09:29:39 <Halcyon> The jaffles?
09:29:44 <coppice> yes
09:29:50 <rust_collector> ning po
09:29:52 <Halcyon> Mmm indeed, but they look good
09:30:21 <rust_collector> I want to try something tofu some time. I am not sure if I want to make it myself
09:30:35 <Halcyon> Just buy ready made tofu
09:30:55 <DogWomble> i've tried tofu before, kinda reminded me of exsessively rubbery chewing gum\
09:31:10 <Halcyon> I use it in stir frys quite a bit, it takes on a lot of flavour. By themselves its bland
09:31:24 <coppice> DogWomble: that doesn't sound anything like tofu
09:31:30 <rust_collector> yeah, but I want to try it prepared properly, so it does not remind me of excessively rubbery chewing gum
09:31:37 <Halcyon> I was going to say, tofu shouldn't be chewy
09:31:46 <rust_collector> there are many kinds
09:31:48 <DogWomble> coppice, i suspect it was some dodgy cheap stuff :)
09:31:52 <Halcyon> Unless you dry it out
09:32:16 <rust_collector> silken and firm, and probably lots of others
09:32:27 <rust_collector> not that I have tried any of them
09:32:35 <coppice> Halcyon: they don't seem to put any SiChuan pepper in their ma po tofu
09:32:41 <Halcyon> If you haven't tried tofu before, go something simple like: https://www.goodfood.com.au/recipes/salt-and-pepper-tofu-20111018-29w8a
09:33:02 <Halcyon> I usually make a soy sauce or tamari dipping sauce with chilli and ginger
09:33:12 <coppice> Halcyon: even the dried sheets of tofu aren't chewy
09:33:49 <Halcyon> Can't say I've ever tried dried tofu
09:34:12 <Halcyon> I'm leaning towards this for dinner tonight: https://www.goodfood.com.au/recipes/frank-camorras-macaroni-and-cheese-20140331-35t8w
09:34:16 <Halcyon> Quick and easy with nice flavours
09:34:24 <coppice> its used in various asian dishes, including desserts
09:34:32 <rust_collector> I want to make a wok burner
09:34:48 <rust_collector> gas burner
09:36:03 <steve30> hi
09:36:06 <rust_collector> It is served hot and can be enriched with vegetables, spices or wine.
09:36:12 <rust_collector> that sounds interesting
09:36:40 <coppice> Halcyon: the cream coloured ripply things in this https://rasamalaysia.com/recipe-bean-curd-sticks-and-pork-ribs/ are dried tofu, which has softened up in the broth
09:36:58 <Halcyon> Oh right
09:37:42 <Halcyon> Anyway I better get going so I can finish oiling my deck.
09:37:43 <Halcyon> Later
09:37:54 <rust_collector> have fun
09:38:24 <coppice> rust_collector: are you looking for a 50kW kind of gas burner you can really chau with?
09:39:05 * steve30 curls up on Halcyon's decking again :p
09:39:28 <rust_collector> I am thinking of a reasonably chunky thing, that I can use with a wok. I am not sure about ratings and such
09:39:59 <rust_collector> I guess it should be fairly powerful
09:40:54 <coppice> If you want to use a 40cm kind of domestic wok with a wok shovel 5 or 6kW is OK. If you want to really chau, like a professional chef, you really need some serious power
09:42:30 <rust_collector> Well, I do not have a wok yet, so that is a thing, but I think 40cm sounds a bit on the small side?
09:43:13 <rust_collector> I was thinking about something like a ring type of burner. we will see. worst case, I make a smaller wok
09:43:14 <coppice> 40cm is pretty normal for a domestic wok, but its not really big enough to chau with. Domestic users don't really chau anyway, so its OK
09:45:13 <rust_collector> hmmm. I should look up a bit more info about burners and ratings

09:46:39 <rust_collector> and wok things, lol
09:49:51 <coppice> our wok is about 40cm. Its a 5-ply one. that makes them expensive, but they heat much more evenly
09:53:32 <rust_collector> I thought that was... not the point of a wok?
09:54:26 <coppice> huh?
09:55:01 <rust_collector> I guess they have several versions of that too, but most say it should be a thin plain steel wok, so you can heat things in the bottom, and keep stuff warm on the sides, kind of
09:55:36 Join: Stiff ([email protected]) to #EEVblog
09:57:01 <rust_collector> oh well, it is time for a nap. have fun etc.
09:57:31 <coppice> this sounds like a strange use of a wok. people put racks in them, so they warm food above food that's being intensely cooked, but you generally want a wok to be evenly heated. I think the use of thin steel is just about keeping the thing light, but most people don't chau domestically, so the weight isn't that important
09:58:16 <coppice> a professional wok sits in a hole almost the size of the wok, so the fire heats the whole underside
10:01:41 <rust_collector> that sounds like it makes sense. I have not seen anyone with a rack, but ok
10:02:25 <rust_collector> but, good night.
10:02:50 <coppice> woks usually come with 2 racks. one to sit in the middle of the wok for steaming, and one that sits on the edge of the wok to keep things warm
10:07:58 <coppice> This is our wok http://www.buffalocookware.com/en/2-pro-detail.php?s=8#

10:52:56 * Ampera throws a lob of peanutbutter mochi at Halcyon
10:53:03 <Halcyon> Mmmmm dense
10:53:08 <Ampera> I've been to the asian supermarket
10:53:12 <Ampera> and got delicious thin gs
10:53:13 <Halcyon> Me too!
10:53:16 <Ampera> neat
10:53:23 <Halcyon> I bought you those hot noodles to try
10:53:28 <Ampera> What are they again?
10:53:31 <Halcyon> I'm making some for myself as we speak
10:53:40 <Ampera> I bought some hot ramen when I saw it in the store

10:55:18 <Ampera> I also got some soba
10:55:23 <Ampera> and by some, I mean a /lot/
10:55:28 <Halcyon> Heh

10:55:42 <Ampera> I always make it hot in broth.
10:55:48 <Halcyon> Yum
10:55:52 <Halcyon> Back shortly... making noodles
10:55:54 <Ampera> I also bought some very very small dried srimps, so I can throw those in.
10:55:58 <Ampera> alright
10:56:05 <steve30> Halcyon, how's the decking?
11:03:07 <Halcyon> Deck is going well got more to do today
11:03:45 <Halcyon> So these noodles, nice consistancy and bite to them
11:03:56 <Halcyon> Heat is slow to come on but it has a bit of spank
11:04:24 <steve30> You might be interested to know that I'm sat here in my underwear.
11:04:38 * Halcyon is very interested :P
11:05:23 <Ampera> Halcyon, I'm tempted to cook some up now
11:05:24 <Ampera> should I/
11:05:28 <Halcyon> Initially the heat is about a 5/10 for me... will see what it's like when I finish them
11:05:32 <Halcyon> You should
11:06:08 <Ampera> aehrerh
11:06:12 <Ampera> alright, I'll make them up in a second
11:06:26 <Halcyon> I'm almost finished, the heat keeps building, I'd say overall it's about 7-8/10 in terms of spiciness
11:06:42 <Ampera> alright well I'll see how that compares to my scale
11:06:54 <Halcyon> I'll put two packs in there for you
11:07:06 <Ampera> alright
11:07:34 <Halcyon> My nose is running, face tingling. Nice sensation. Quite hot but a very nice flavour.
11:07:54 <Halcyon> Must not rub my eyes or touch my penis for a while, I got some of the sauce on my hands
11:11:39 <steve30> I'm just preparing a photo which halcyon will like

11:16:51 <Ampera> this is what I have
11:17:39 <Halcyon> Looks yummy
11:18:00 <Ampera> The spice isn't that hot, but it's the sort of smack you in the back of the throat spice
11:18:26 <Ampera> like what you'd get normally with ramen, the sort of pure capsaicin mixed in kinda flavour
11:18:53 <Ampera> Really chewy noodles
11:19:01 <Ampera> I believe they're rice.
11:19:36 <Ampera> Spice is maybe a 6.5/10
11:21:26 <Ampera> quite an obnoxious spice though
11:21:47 <Halcyon> Nice :-)
11:22:16 <Ampera> Excited to try the other stuff, to see how it compares.

11:51:05 <Ampera> I'm watching it right now
11:51:09 <T3sl4> \o/
11:51:49 <coppice> I wonder if Penn and Teller have ever done a trick incorporating actual BS
11:53:05 <T3sl4> would make sense
12:04:39 <Halcyon> I'm back
12:04:43 <Halcyon> Fuck postage is expensive
12:04:52 <steve30> wb
12:06:02 <Halcyon> Ta :-)
12:06:17 <Ampera> It's cheaper down there than it is here, Halcyon
12:06:32 <Halcyon> 5KG was AUD$90
12:06:45 <Ampera> The package I sent you was about 80 USD (115 AUD)
12:06:50 <Halcyon> I expected maybe around $40 or $50
12:06:54 <Halcyon> Fark
12:06:56 <Halcyon> Now I feel bad
12:07:01 <Ampera> no, stop
12:07:03 <Ampera> don't do that
12:07:09 <Halcyon> :P
12:07:11 <Ampera> otherwise you make me angr
12:07:17 <Halcyon> Angry boner?
12:07:18 <Ampera> I'm happy to send you things
12:07:22 <Halcyon> As am I
12:07:30 <Halcyon> I hope you get enjoyment out of my package :P
12:07:40 * Ampera calls 911
12:07:50 <Halcyon> I didn't end up including the jaffa cakes in for two reasons...
12:07:59 <Ampera> reason 1, you ate them all
12:08:02 <Ampera> reason 2, you didn't have space
12:08:06 <Ampera> is fine, I can get them otherwise
12:08:07 <Halcyon> Firstly the box I bought was out of date and all the ones on the shelf were best before 29/09 which is a bit shit
12:08:09 <steve30> He got some enjoyment out of mine earlier :p
12:08:17 <Halcyon> But also I didn't have space
12:08:30 <Ampera> It's no problem. I can even get them here, just not the mcvities brand
12:08:34 <Ampera> since mcvities hates the US
12:08:42 <Halcyon> I'll reserve them for the next package
12:08:50 <Halcyon> I figure out of everything, you wouldn't mind foregoing those
12:08:50 * steve30 just had a mcvities digestive
12:08:56 <Ampera> Actually, I did buy a pack of caramel digestives from Job Lot that were McVities
12:09:11 <Ampera> Which was weird, because I thought they weren't allowed to call them that here
12:09:20 <Halcyon> Why not?
12:09:40 <Ampera> because something something insinuating they medically help your stomach, something something
12:09:44 <Ampera> idk lemme look it up
12:10:08 <Halcyon> Riiiiight
12:10:14 <Halcyon> What a crock of shit
12:10:20 <Halcyon> All food digests, I don't see the issue
12:10:52 <Ampera> "Despite rumors that it is illegal for them to be sold under their usual name in the United States. they are, in fact, widely available in imported food sections of grocery stores and by mail order"
12:11:07 <Halcyon> There you go
12:11:37 <Halcyon> I know America is backwards, but I didn't think even you guys would have something that crazy
12:11:52 <Ampera> I also looked up haggis
12:11:58 <Halcyon> Blah
12:12:03 <Ampera> as it turns out, it's only illegal to import it, not to make, sell, or buy it
12:12:13 <Ampera> I'd /love/ to have some
12:12:23 <Halcyon> I'll pass on the Haggis
12:12:31 <Halcyon> You can't even import the canned stuff?
12:12:31 <steve30> I had haggis when I was younger. I seem to remember it being nice.
12:12:39 <Ampera> Halcyon, nothing with sheep's lung
12:12:46 <Halcyon> Hm
12:13:02 <Ampera> But apparently it's perfectly fine to make and sell it here, you just can't import it from the UK
12:13:10 <Ampera> Idk if the ban applies to other nations
12:13:56 <Halcyon> Anyway, I hope it makes it there OK with all the foodstuffs
12:14:05 <Halcyon> It's all pre-packaged and sealed so it should be fine
12:15:24 <Ampera> it should

15:55:08 <Saddle_au> I just got a Facebook message from a company selling plugin solar panels and inverters. They are pushing the whole thing as "DIY installation". I thought how do they do that? Well, by using a death plug, a male power plug on the inverter side. I thought I was seeing things, maybe I don't understand. They're called Legion Solar and have an over-fund
15:55:08 <Saddle_au> ed Kickstarter. Anyone know of this?
15:56:22 <T3sl4> if it's by the book, it's not energized unless it detects active mains to push power into
15:56:34 <T3sl4> KS, who knows
16:04:50 <Halcyon> Saddle_au, I thought there were laws with anything to do with installation of mains power?
16:05:05 <Halcyon> I can't see anything plugging into the grid being allowed as DYI
16:05:07 <Halcyon> DIY
17:10:32 <Saddle_au> Its what the old guys used to do with caravans. Make a male to male cable to plug in their van because female sockets were cheap and easy to get.
