14:17:18 <Nothing\> it's interesting as i earn story/quest-based achievements for this game on steam, being able to see what percentage of people who played the game actually got that far
14:17:43 <Nothing\> it's also confusing that just over 50% of players even began the first quest
14:17:55 <Nothing\> yet the game got overwhelmingly positive reviews
14:18:28 <Nothing\> you'd expect if only half the people who played it bothered to play for more than an hour it wouldn't get very good reviews
14:18:59 <jaymax> Maybe people like thew very idea of the game - but don't play games in general.
14:19:07 <jaymax> Which game is this?
14:19:14 <Nothing\> hell even as a semi-illiterate 6 year old with ADD I was able to get about 1/3 of the way through the game without understanding any of the strategy or anything behind JRPGs
14:19:23 <Nothing\> jaymax, final fantasy 2/4
14:19:32 <Nothing\> american 2, japanese 4
14:20:00 <Nothing\> jaymax, thing is, it's a remake so it's not like people didn't know what they were getting into
14:20:05 <jaymax> Nintendo simps, so that explains the great reviews without even playing it.
14:20:23 <Nothing\> well it's not so much reviews without playing it
14:20:32 <Nothing\> they just didn't play it, that's all
14:20:45 <jaymax> But that's still my point.
14:20:47 <Nothing\> like on steam you have to have played a game for a few hours before it lets you review them anyways
14:21:11 <Nothing\> but you could just as easily just wander around the first area before the first dungeon
14:21:21 <Nothing\> leveling for a few hours or something
14:21:22 <Nothing\> i dunno
14:21:54 <jaymax> Being a fanboy doesn't mean you need to actually need to eat everything when hauling up to the trough.
14:22:04 <Nothing\> maybe it was just too hard for them cuz it's based on the japanese release, which was obviously harder than the north american release
14:22:12 <Nothing\> then there's a hard mode on top of that
14:22:19 <jaymax> As in, they see a Nintendo release; immediate 5 stars.
14:22:33 <Nothing\> jaymax, i've come close to that
14:22:56 <Nothing\> like with this game, there was another remake of final fantasy 2/4 that just came out a week before i got this one
14:23:13 <Nothing\> and i almost just bought the game reflexively, without checking anything about it
14:23:28 <Nothing\> just cuz i figured you can't go wrong with a remake of final fantasy 2/4
14:24:46 <Nothing\> but the first review i read said they added very little to the game so i figured it was better to just buy THIS remake instead, where it's a full 3d remake of a game that was released with the SNES and basically everything about the game except the very fundamentals like story and characters etc have been changed
14:25:09 <Nothing\> so i figured it'd be better to just go with that. Plus i've played through it multiple times so i know it's a good remake
14:25:59 <Nothing\> my only problem is it's got a lot bunch of mechanics in it where you have to do things exactly the right way or risk screwing up your playthrough and having to start over again
14:26:27 <Nothing\> or worse, you have 2 other harder playthroughs after the first so you could potentially screw up your 3rd playthrough and have to start all over again
14:26:49 <Nothing\> but the game gives you absolutely no hint or advice on how to do this right or that the mechanic even exists
14:27:07 <jaymax> I stopped playing games years ago - `World of Goo` was my last endeavour. But something I've seen the past while is the "bending over the table" that Nintendo does to their customer base - very Disney-level of abuse, and it doesn't even matter what Nintendo realeases now - or how infrequently. It *will* be loved regardless.
14:27:16 <Nothing\> so i'm just following a guide i found on gamefaqs and using triple redundant saves
14:27:46 <Nothing\> i couldn't get into world of goo but yeah most of the games i play are indie games like that
14:28:02 <jaymax> I'm also half-asleep, but at least my generator is working again.
14:28:33 <Nothing\> yeah even though it wound up coming to almost $600 for me, i don't regret buying a switch
14:28:45 <Nothing\> just between mario odyssey and breath of the wild alone i got my money's worth
14:28:56 <Nothing\> nearly 1000 hours between the two
14:29:25 <jaymax> I have a Wii to hack further; might get one of those HDMI dongles for it.
14:29:47 <Nothing\> yeah i never use my wii anymore. I really should.
14:30:03 <Nothing\> i have this great hack of new super mario bros that's basically a full blown remake of it
14:30:16 <Nothing\> completely different levels, overworld layout, the whole nine yards
14:30:25 <Nothing\> might as well be a sequel
14:31:12 <Nothing\> but for some reason i can't get twilight princess to work on my modded wii. I just get graphical glitches so severe it's pretty much unplayable
14:31:22 <jaymax> IIRC I have Homebrew working on it, it's been a few months (at least) now so I might even have that linux distro on the SD card too.
14:31:31 <Nothing\> and for kirby, it plays fine for a littel bit, then freezes up after a couple of minutes
14:31:44 <Nothing\> for both games it doesn't matter what version i use or what options so i've given up
14:32:01 <Nothing\> nice
14:32:27 <jaymax> Like they say, HACK all the things
14:32:36 <Nothing\> exactly
14:32:42 <Nothing\> hacking just adds new functionality
14:32:47 <jaymax> Damn, HAKC all the things
14:32:47 <Nothing\> nothing wrong with that
14:32:54 <Nothing\> hack the world
14:33:01 <Nothing\> now then
14:33:01 <jaymax> hack time
14:33:09 <Nothing\> i've gotta hack up the location of my ecig
14:33:27 <Nothing\> since i just came from the can i'm gonna guess it's in there
14:33:50 <jaymax> I'm fading fast, so I'll go sleep
14:34:04 <Nothing\> heh alright man
14:34:10 <Nothing\> welp, have a good one
14:34:14 <Nothing\> hope you sleep well
14:34:16 <jaymax> Cheers
14:34:23 <Nothing\> aye, same to you

23:26:32 <Nothing\> i've decided i'm going to write a number guessing game in c++ and submit it to steam for sale

23:27:08 <Nothing\> hey buddy
23:27:12 <Nothing\> how's it going
23:28:00 * Ampera also fprint("%s is far better than %s", "C", "C++");'s Nothing\
23:28:12 <Ampera> Good going to do some electricianing today
23:29:39 <Nothing\> nice
23:30:17 <Ampera> some of my tea is coming in today
23:30:20 <Nothing\> Ampera, lol i forgot the weird syntax C has for printing variable
23:30:22 <Nothing\> s
23:30:30 <Nothing\> i thought it was printf though
23:30:34 <Nothing\> what's the difference?
23:30:35 <Ampera> it was
23:30:38 <Nothing\> ah
23:30:55 <Nothing\> what's the f stand for?
23:30:57 <Ampera> there is also fprintf, which I believe allows you to print to an open file handle
23:31:02 <Ampera> formatted
23:31:05 <Ampera> print formatted
23:31:07 <Nothing\> ah
23:31:09 <Ampera> and then file print formatted
23:31:12 <Ampera> since it's formatting it
23:31:30 <Nothing\> as opposode to just regurgitating the raw text to the screen
23:31:34 <Nothing\> opposed
23:31:43 <Ampera> I believe that'd be print
23:31:50 <Ampera> but there is no screen here
23:31:51 <Nothing\> ah yeah
23:31:52 <Ampera> it's stdout
23:31:55 <Ampera> well
23:31:59 <Nothing\> yeah i think that's about as far as i got in C
23:32:06 <Nothing\> printing variables
23:32:10 <Ampera> sorta stdout, I forget the exact term for it
23:32:18 <Ampera> I got some fun stuff done in C
23:32:25 <Nothing\> are there still datastreams like in c++?
23:32:32 <Ampera> probably the most interesting thing I wrote is a mandelbrot plotter in C/OpenGL
23:32:37 <Ampera> most valid C is also valid C++
23:32:54 <Nothing\> hrm
23:33:18 <Ampera> https://pastebin.com/F9PvdXNL
23:33:18 <Nothing\> i'm actually taking the time to read the c++ tutorial thistime around so i'm learning more about how it actually works
23:33:20 <EEVBot> [Title] - Mandelbrot.c - Pastebin.com
23:33:23 <Ampera> this was the mandelbrot thing I wrote
23:33:42 <Nothing\> it may take me a week to learn a simple thing like variables, or user input
23:34:02 <Nothing\> but at least i'm doing it right and not skipping anything
23:34:36 <Nothing\> nice
23:34:41 <Ampera> variables are easy in C
23:34:45 <Nothing\> that's another thing i never did was graphics
23:34:48 <Ampera> modifier type name = value
23:34:56 <Nothing\> the whole turtle way of doing graphics in basic turned me off of them
23:35:03 <Nothing\> it's so fucking tedious
23:35:08 <Nothing\> you know, like logos
23:35:21 <rust_collector> do it like legos
23:35:23 <Ampera> There are at least 20,000 ways to do graphics in C, and about 40,000 ways to do it in C++
23:35:42 <Ampera> the mandelbrot code I wrote was also because I wanted to use archaic OpenGL
23:35:51 <Nothing\> oh hey good news
23:36:01 <Nothing\> today's the first day in weeks i've woken up NOT in agony
23:36:20 <Nothing\> i mean i'm still in pain, but at least this time it's more like a 3/10 instead of a 5 or 6
23:36:37 <Nothing\> where 7's where i set my level for intolerable pain
23:36:42 <Nothing\> untolerable?
23:36:43 <Ampera> but you can use xterm, sixels, X11, vulkan, direct2D, direct3D, winG, DirectDraw, output to an image
23:36:52 <Nothing\> that's pretty cool
23:37:07 <Nothing\> qb64 only has the turtle graphics, opengl and i think direct3d
23:37:08 <Ampera> I learned C on Turbo C, which ran in real mode on IBM PC compatibles
23:37:25 <Nothing\> what? no umm
23:37:27 <Ampera> and there you can directly alter screen memory and set registers on the video card
23:37:31 <Nothing\> borland
23:37:33 <Nothing\> that's it
23:37:39 <Nothing\> drew a blank there for a second
23:37:41 <Ampera> aye, Borland's Turbo C
23:37:50 <Nothing\> oh i didn't know they were the same
23:38:00 <Ampera> Was a nice way to learn, though pointers are extra special in real mode C
23:38:10 <Nothing\> i woner if anyone ever ported C over to the C64
23:38:13 <Ampera> Yes.
23:38:15 <Nothing\> or if you ever could
23:38:27 <Nothing\> i mean you'd probably have to use a memory expansion cart
23:38:34 <Ampera> https://www.c64-wiki.com/wiki/Power_C
23:38:35 <Ampera> here's one
23:38:36 <EEVBot> [Title] - Power C - C64-Wiki
23:38:39 <Nothing\> or keep a set of floppies on hand
23:38:53 <Nothing\> 1 floppy per library probably
23:39:03 <Nothing\> 840k
23:39:23 <Nothing\> wtf where do these lady beetles keep coming from
23:39:26 <Nothing\> brb
23:39:32 <rust_collector> africa
23:39:38 <Ampera> I imagine the main irritation would be the 40 col screen
23:39:51 <Ampera> it would probably make more sense to use the C128 with the 80 column chip
23:40:44 <Nothing\> yum
23:40:58 <Nothing\> it did that thing where it squirts foul smelling yellow liquid everywhere
23:41:07 <Nothing\> i dunno if it's piss or what
23:41:17 <Nothing\> but it smells like soil or something
23:41:24 <Nothing\> i figured it was a defense mechanism
23:41:47 <Nothing\> ah fuck i can smell it on my hand. musta got through the kleenex
23:41:48 <Nothing\> bcb
23:46:13 <Nothing\> ugh
23:46:21 <Nothing\> trying to farm this one weapon in ff2/4
23:46:27 <Nothing\> it is SO frustrating
23:47:08 <Nothing\> you have to grind on this specific island against monsters 10-15 levels higher than you, and the item only drops maybe 1%
23:47:29 <Nothing\> took me 10 tries just to figure out a strategy that works
23:48:11 <Nothing\> at least i'm leveling like crazy while doing it. fighting such high level enemies
23:48:38 <Nothing\> every so often i'll kill off all party members except 2 so i get more xp for the remaining 2 and do some power leveling
23:49:16 <Nothing\> and i'm sure this is all riveting for you guys
23:49:37 <Nothing\> so on that note i'm going to pop over to the 'done clinic
23:49:54 <Nothing\> get me some fuckin' 'done man
23:50:04 <Nothing\> FUCKIN' 'DOOOONE MAAAAAAAAN
23:50:14 * Nothing\ does his best dennis leary impression
23:51:04 <Nothing\> wtf how's it take my mum less time to poop than it takes me to pee
23:51:09 <Nothing\> that ain't right
23:57:45 <rust_collector> well, he is denis... just to put that on your list of not right
23:59:27 Quit: Nothing\ (~Shmendrick@cpe9050ca20a183-cm9050ca20a180.cpe.net.cable.rogers.com) Ping timeout: 121 seconds
