09:55:36 <mrmobodies1> Got an email back from Dave to say the website is down and he needs his IT guy.
09:56:12 <coppice_> is it a guy or an it?
09:56:55 <mrmobodies1> This is what he said: "Down for me and reports for everyone else as well. I can't fix it, will need my IT guy."
09:57:34 <mrmobodies1> Oh sorry a joke.
09:59:54 <EEVBlog> New EEVBlog Tweet: RT @blockchainchick: Day 2 of YouTube censorship: 2 videos removed, one strike so far. This means I will not be able to post again (on YouT…
10:00:33 <mrmobodies1> What's going on?
10:00:39 <mrmobodies1> Censorship?
10:01:18 <mrmobodies1> I thought I was having a bad day nothing to do with the outage though.
10:12:33 <mrmobodies1> Oops misunderstanding it is blockchainchick. https://twitter.com/blockchainchick?lang=en The bold fonts confused me a bit.
10:16:06 <mrmobodies1> I see, One of her video that was taken down "How to earn Crypto" marked as "Harmful and dangerous"

10:27:09 <Ampera> that's gnif
10:27:18 <Ampera> (the IT guy)
10:27:38 <mrmobodies1> I saw one of his threads hacking the nvidia graphics cards into their professional counterparts.
10:39:20 <mrmobodies1> I came back from the little village pub much earlier than I wanted to. Apparantly they like very loud music at late times during this time of the year and karaoke. Before it started it sounded like a busy market place with amount of people turning up in such a small space.
10:53:39 <mrmobodies1> Just going to switch to 4G modem so I can experiment with the ip's on subnet.

11:05:41 <mrmobodies1> Looks like it is now Christmas day in England.
11:10:30 <DHess_US> forum still down
11:15:25 <T3sl4> it's an xmas miracle
11:18:38 <mrmobodies1> Dhess_Uss "forum still down" that'll make a 3 word story
11:24:47 <DHess_US> Good idea mrmobodies1. I would post it but the forums are down.
11:26:11 <mrmobodies1> I got to keep on remind myself when I go in the kitchen... not to eat the sweats and what might happen the next day.
11:26:55 <Halcyon> Merry Christmas you guys
11:28:56 <Halcyon> DHess_US: I've emailed Dave and Geoff
11:30:03 <Halcyon> Merry Christmas Ampera *cuddles*

11:38:41 <Halcyon> Yeh it's right around the time we have Christmas Lunch here in AU
11:38:56 <Halcyon> I don't think Geoff is at home either so he won't have access to the servers
11:39:13 <T3sl4> gremlinz: the heck is a "wallops"
11:39:16 <Halcyon> Aww that's sweet gremlinz, thanks mate :)
11:39:30 <Halcyon> T3sl4: It's when you get a big smack :P
11:39:32 <gremlinz> wallop
11:39:34 <gremlinz> ^
11:39:43 * T3sl4 smacks Halcyon with Ampera
11:40:16 <T3sl4> whatever it is, pidgin does a popup dialog of it for some reason
11:40:53 <Halcyon> Eww pidgin
11:41:07 <Halcyon> Do you like your credentials saved in clear text on your PC T3sl4 ?
11:41:30 <T3sl4> i use a shit pw here
11:43:07 <Halcyon> T3sl4: WALLOPS is like a global system message.
11:43:44 <Halcyon> Well to all OPS at least, I don't know if regular users see it too?
11:47:45 <gremlinz> all users on connect get default mode +w
11:47:49 <gremlinz> so unless you remove that mode
11:47:55 <gremlinz> you'll get the message
11:48:31 <Halcyon> There you go
11:49:14 <Halcyon> I guess Wallops (Write (to) ALL OPerators) has kind of lost its meaning over the years.
11:51:48 <mrmobodies1> It seems to be working now.
11:52:24 <Halcyon> \o/
12:05:15 <Halcyon> Well here goes nothing. Running a major update on my NAS. I hope nothing breaks.
12:07:22 <gremlinz> brick it!
12:07:33 <Halcyon> :P
12:07:37 <Halcyon> Don't say that :P
12:12:22 * T3sl4 licks Halcyon's NAS
12:12:46 <mrmobodies1> What kind of NAS is it?
12:14:10 <mrmobodies1> I see Gnif has commented that it was a DDoS.
12:18:58 <T3sl4> a DDDoS at that
12:19:01 <T3sl4> whatever that means :P
12:19:24 <Halcyon> mrmobodies1: FreeNAS. Upgrading from 11.1 to 11.2
12:21:29 <Halcyon> Woot! All my data is intact. Hooray!
12:21:43 <Halcyon> Mucking around with encrypted disks always scares me
12:24:26 * T3sl4 inverts one bit in Halcyon's hash
12:24:41 <Halcyon> I backup my keys :P
12:24:44 <Halcyon> I'm not a moron
12:31:44 <mrmobodies1> Ahh Freenas, I set one of those up for someone about 4m onths ago. I found a HP 8gb quad core slimline in a skip. It work so I took out the two video cards and put in 1 Intel PT quad nic, installed Freenas I think I revereted to 11.1 and put in 1 ssd and a 2tb Seagate for an elderly person to play with.
12:32:10 <Halcyon> Nice :) Yeh I've been running FreeNAS since version 9. Absolutely love it.
12:32:33 <mrmobodies1> I also put in some extra cables between his 24 port and 2 port tabletop switch in the livingroom.
12:33:05 <mrmobodies1> It seems to work with LAGG very well.
12:33:20 <Halcyon> Yeh it does, especially with the Intel NICs
12:36:40 <mrmobodies1> T3s13 DDOS Denial of Service attack. Just someone generating a lot of traffic somwhere in a way that nobody else can use it.
12:37:42 <Halcyon> But hey said Distributed DDoS (DDDoS)
12:37:44 <Halcyon> *he
12:37:52 <mrmobodies1> Ohh oops
12:37:53 <Halcyon> T3sl4 was being a pedant
12:38:12 <T3sl4> ^
12:38:17 <Halcyon> :)
12:39:40 <mrmobodies1> There was one thing I did with Freenas, I don't know if it bothers you or not but when dialogues appear, the rest of the page goes dark and hurts my eyes after a while. I found it was very to just hide the element with Adblocl so it no longer does it.
12:40:23 <mrmobodies1> I think they are called gradients like the ones I block on the youtube player and Amazon when typing in the search box.
12:40:49 <Halcyon> Can't say I've noticed that?
12:41:03 <Halcyon> Even on 11.1, the shading always returned when I closed a box
12:41:13 <Halcyon> Sorry, disappeared
12:42:35 <mrmobodies1> II'l see if I can find the element.
13:17:20 <Halcyon> Oh wow, I am loving Backblaze
13:17:28 <Halcyon> Cloud backups were so easy to set up in FreeNAS
13:18:54 <DHess_US> Yes, delivering your data to the FBI is easier than ever.
13:19:26 <Halcyon> I encrypt it before it leaves my network
13:19:38 <Halcyon> In fact, FreeNAS does it automatically once you enable the option
13:19:43 <DHess_US> Oh, Backblaze allows that? I tried finding it on their site but came up empty.
13:20:13 <Halcyon> It's not a function of Backblaze, it's a function of FreeNAS. It uploads an encrypted version of the file (and obscures the filenames) to Backblaze
13:20:39 <DHess_US> I was probably looking for the wrong thing. I was looking for SAN support.
13:20:55 <Halcyon> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rlXXVN0FSog
13:21:20 <Halcyon> I just have various cloud sync tasks set up similar to this and it uploads my NAS to Backblaze
13:21:37 <DHess_US> I couldn't do it anyway with slow upload speeds.
13:21:51 <Halcyon> I'm limited to 10Mbps but still, it's better than nothing
13:22:01 <Halcyon> And it's cheaper than buying hard disks or other media
13:22:32 <Halcyon> I only sync my media library every few months. For my user data, it's sync'd weekly
13:23:22 <DHess_US> What I would like is a raw block device which I just remotely mount.
13:23:33 <Halcyon> I guess you could set that up with AWS?
13:23:40 <Halcyon> How much it would cost... *shrug*
13:23:44 <DHess_US> Yes, but the cost would be very very high.
13:24:02 <Halcyon> Yup, at least this way, I pay $60 a year to have unlimited storage.
13:24:16 <Halcyon> Plus even if someone managed to get a copy of my Backblaze account, it's all useless to them.
13:24:20 <DHess_US> Can do it with any virtual instance. Then create an encrypted container and stick a filesystem in it.
13:24:34 <DHess_US> So like iSCSI or any SAN.
13:25:18 <DHess_US> Then can RSync or whatever but performance would suck. Can't offload the processing unfortunately because that compromises the encryption.
13:25:53 <DHess_US> But it would be tolerable with 100Mb service.
13:26:44 <DHess_US> I don't know however has resilient the various filesystems are in a network environment.
13:29:30 <Halcyon> I'm just setting this up at home
13:29:49 <Halcyon> I just don't have anywhere I can reliably dump 10TB of data which doesn't get updated very often.
13:30:04 <Halcyon> I was using LTO2 tapes, but it takes 50 tapes now and several weeks to do a backup.
13:36:56 <mrmobodies1> I have just found the elements but that is on the classic skin. The new one is dark.
13:37:05 <mrmobodies1> ###edit_dialog_underlay
13:37:09 <mrmobodies1> ##.dijitDialogUnderlay._underlay
13:37:49 <mrmobodies1> I don't mind it being dark as long as it doesn't flash from white to dark so that's what good about it.
13:38:11 <Halcyon> Which version of FreeNAS are you running?
13:38:28 <mrmobodies1> That is the new version 11.2-U7
13:38:41 <mrmobodies1> It has the classic interface where the problem was.
13:38:43 <Halcyon> Ah OK, I just installed it today, haven't had much to do with it yet
13:38:53 <Halcyon> Ah I see, I'm using the new one (which I actually prefer)
13:39:16 <mrmobodies1> it remains dark which is nice. no flashing on dialogues.
13:40:11 <EEVBlog> New EEVBlog Tweet: RT @HostFission: @eevblog @BenjaminJustiz The website and forum is back up, the site had come under a DDoS attack and is now being mitigate…
13:43:49 <mrmobodies1> Unlimited storage for $60 a year for 10mbps or apprx 1mb a sec. That sounds good for many small things.
13:44:45 <Halcyon> Yup
13:51:57 <mrmobodies1> I have just moved about 5 months ago to the countryside.
13:52:07 <mrmobodies1> It has taken BT 3 months to fix the second line
13:52:34 <mrmobodies1> they have finished but didn't sign off the job so the ISP system has disconnected it for the third time.
13:52:42 <Halcyon> It's not hard is it?
13:53:07 <mrmobodies1> I heard they had to dig up the road but floods didn't help in Leeds and Yorkshire.
13:53:33 <mrmobodies1> but they didn't sign it off and they couldnt't finish the order
13:54:18 <steve30> hi
13:54:30 <mrmobodies1> They dug a hole, BT came out it started to rain and they had to stop. The contractors came and filled it in.
13:54:56 <mrmobodies1> So when BT came back to finish the job they had to wait most of the day for the dig team to dig out again.
13:55:54 <mrmobodies1> It was Telent.
13:57:11 <mrmobodies1> I also have 12 static IP'S on order and apparently they are not going to charge me for it for both lines so that's one good thing.
14:00:54 <mrmobodies1> I am looking for something
14:02:05 <mrmobodies1> A Portapow premium usb meter but I can't find them selling or something similar to it. It must have a dc jack input/output to measure the voltage and load.
14:02:28 <mrmobodies1> I was going to order it for someone as a gist.
14:03:00 * steve30 pokes Halcyon
14:04:05 <mrmobodies1> Hokey pokey
14:09:38 <Halcyon> Hey Steve :)
14:09:42 <Halcyon> Merry Christmas my friend
14:10:06 <steve30> happy winter celebrations :)
14:10:22 <Halcyon> It's 26 degrees here :P
14:11:15 <steve30> My ebay draytek router came
14:11:18 <Halcyon> Oh yay!
14:12:09 <mrmobodies1> it is 4.6c outside
14:12:29 <mrmobodies1> Draytek Vigor?
14:12:40 <steve30> Vigor 2926n
14:14:50 <steve30> Halcyon, I think i'll try and go out on the bike some time this morning
14:15:22 <Halcyon> Nice :)
14:18:47 <mrmobodies1> I brought 4x 2830n's on Ebay for about £40 to discover that the subnetting to lan option is only present with the wan1 dsl. It looks like a model has an ethernet port for wan1.
14:31:32 <Halcyon> Brilliant, my heatsink compound is leaking
14:31:38 <Halcyon> Who puts that stuff in a metal tube
14:33:21 <mrmobodies1> a metal sryinge?
14:33:44 <Halcyon> Nah like a squeezy tube
14:33:48 <Halcyon> 100 grams
14:34:38 <mrmobodies1> I some artic metal stuff which seems to do the job
14:34:40 * steve30 wonders what Halcyon got him for Christmas :p
14:34:49 * Halcyon unzips his fly
14:34:50 <Halcyon> :P
14:34:50 <mrmobodies1> and works great with the copper shims
14:35:24 <mrmobodies1> no flies at Christmas here thanks to the weather.
14:35:40 <Halcyon> mrmobodies1: The compound I have is in a metallic tube, it's just standard white stuff from Dow Corning. But there is obviously a small split in the tube and it's all greasy and yuck
14:37:26 <mrmobodies1> Oh the silastic thing.
14:37:47 <Halcyon> https://au.element14.com/dowsil-formerly-dow-corning/340/heat-sink-compound-tube-100g-340/dp/101685
14:38:01 <Halcyon> It comes in an aluminium (?) tube
14:40:27 <mrmobodies1> It looks like a good one from the overview and has a datasheet.
14:40:46 <Halcyon> I'll have to decant it into a plastic container so it doesn't keep oozing out
14:41:45 <Halcyon> Or a small glass jar
14:43:45 <steve30> looks like its going to be a nice sunny day today
14:54:20 <mrmobodies1> Unfortunately for some people they'll predict flooding in England.
14:54:42 <mrmobodies1> I just hope this place I moved to isn't one of them.
14:58:42 <steve30> I'm going to venture out into the cold
15:11:16 <Halcyon> Have fun Steve
15:12:08 <mrmobodies1> Nice and cold and no sweat.
15:21:29 <Halcyon> I think I ate too much chilli
15:30:19 <mrmobodies1> When I want some I open a can of John West Mackeel filiets in Hot Chilli sauce to have with my crisps.
15:30:38 <mrmobodies1> https://www.ocado.com/products/john-west-mackerel-fillets-in-hot-chilli-sauce-418370011?
15:31:21 <Halcyon> Heh
15:32:00 <mrmobodies1> I use the chilli sauce that comes with the fish
15:32:27 <Halcyon> I rarely find a pre-packaged product that is hot enough for me
15:32:30 <mrmobodies1> and it's only got 2.1g of sugar
15:32:38 <Halcyon> \o/
15:32:42 <mrmobodies1> fish and crisps
15:33:51 <Halcyon> I have to laugh at the comments though, they are largely "My husband likes this..." and "My husband loves mackerel on toast as a snack..."
15:34:04 <Halcyon> Do these husbands not buy or cook for themselves?
15:34:05 <mrmobodies1> Here's a joke: I heard someone put it up someones bum and that was really hof or them
15:34:43 <mrmobodies1> it hurt them in a way that they had to go hospital
15:35:08 <Halcyon> Heh
15:35:49 <Halcyon> Probably not advisable to put foodstuffs up your butt
15:35:50 <mrmobodies1> I was told a bully was tied down, had peppers put in their bum and it hurt them.
15:36:25 <mrmobodies1> and it was in some foreign country
15:36:58 <mrmobodies1> but I am very lazy when it comes to cooking
15:37:22 <T3sl4> mmm, peppers
15:37:50 <T3sl4> prefer them in my face and out my bum, rather than the other way around
15:38:01 <Halcyon> I made a Jalapeno, red onion, cheese and corned beef toasted sammich yesterday
15:38:04 <Halcyon> It was delicious
15:38:18 <T3sl4> mmm
15:38:34 <Halcyon> You could also use a green onion/shallots
15:39:57 <Halcyon> I also used pickled jalapeno slices instead of the fresh stuff. It gave it a little extra something.
15:40:02 <mrmobodies1> that's it sorry peppers
15:40:15 <mrmobodies1> nice with humu
15:40:20 <mrmobodies1> in pita bread
15:40:26 <Halcyon> Mmm
16:34:00 * Ampera hugs Halcyon
16:39:04 <Halcyon> Hey Ampera :)
16:39:10 <Halcyon> Merry Christmas friend
16:39:10 <Ampera> Merry Christmas!
16:39:15 <Ampera> How do
16:39:19 <Halcyon> Not too bad :-)
16:39:24 <Halcyon> How about you?
16:39:30 <Ampera> Eh, tired

16:50:10 <Halcyon> No
16:50:11 <Halcyon> Hah
17:23:49 * steve30 returns from the outside
17:24:29 <Halcyon> How was outdoors Steve?
17:24:55 <steve30> bit cool, but not too uncomfortable
17:25:45 <mrmobodies1> Well bedtime for me. I'll be up at about 3 to 4pm as usual.
17:26:08 <steve30> I need to make some food. I think I'll do cheesy pasta

17:31:12 <Ampera> today
17:31:25 <Ampera> ham hash for those who are allergic to nice things
17:31:36 <Halcyon> Mmmmm hash
17:31:46 <Ampera> oh and apparently north korea said they're gonna nuke us.
17:32:07 <Halcyon> How?
17:32:17 <Halcyon> Throw rocks across the coean?
17:32:19 <Halcyon> ocean
17:32:37 <Ampera> just repeating what the crazies on twitter are going on about
17:33:15 <Ampera> it's not like we don't have the second largest cache of nuclear weapons anywhere in the world, and the best funded military in the world, and couldn't wipe the entirety of North Korea off the face of the map in a couple of hours
17:35:29 <Halcyon> Even Kim Jong Fatso knows this

21:17:16 * steve30 pounces onto Halcyon's desk

21:57:27 <Halcyon> T3sl4, I improved my sandwich
21:58:03 <Halcyon> A slight smear of hot English mustard and I built the bottom layer in the pan so any cheese that split over goes all fried and crispy :)
21:58:37 <coppice_> why does everyone want to smear the English?
22:00:50 <Halcyon> Because you are so damned delicious
22:01:15 <coppice_> oh, we are. we are
22:04:11 <Halcyon> And coppice_, the sandwich I speak of is: Cheese (Gouda or a blend), corned beef, pickled jalapeno, red onion, hot english mustard between seedy bread

22:13:30 <Halcyon> How'd you go Steve?
22:15:42 <steve30> well, it connects to the internet
22:15:55 <Halcyon> A good start
22:21:24 <steve30> hmm, I think this router only does L2TP on WAN1, and not WAN2/3/4
22:21:49 <Halcyon> What are you wanting to do?
22:22:32 <steve30> Have the wireless as a WAN port, then do an L2TP connection over that
22:22:44 <T3sl4> Halcyon, sounds delish
22:22:47 <Halcyon> Outbound or inbound?
22:22:59 <steve30> out
22:23:10 <Halcyon> I don't see why you can't ?
22:23:23 <Halcyon> T3sl4: It was
22:24:49 <steve30> I see. Looks like it only likes to do L2TP over Ethernet and not WLAN
22:26:21 <Halcyon> Sounds more like a firewall issue
22:26:31 <Halcyon> You WLAN should have access to all inbound ports that your WAN does
22:27:03 <steve30> I mean doesn't like it as in, the option for L2TP is disabled if you set a WAN port to be wireless

23:09:26 <mrmobodies1> Morning
23:13:36 <mrmobodies1> That 2926n for the VPN.I use a 2830n just for the VPN facility and I routed past the pfsense firewall and it seems to perform really well when it comes to latency.
23:41:43 <steve30> I might have to use a separate access point plugged into the WAN port
