03:41:07 <IDE> hello hello
03:41:51 <IDE> I've watched the opamp video (EEVblog #600) for the 7th time and finally starting to get it! very thankful this is out on youtube bigups
03:42:06 <steve30> evening
03:42:16 <IDE> how is everyone
03:43:52 <Ampera> my PBX is being a cunt, so I'm going to have to switch what hardware I'm running it on
03:44:13 <Ampera> I have a passively cooled lab PC which I just think is overheating.
03:45:03 <steve30> Ampera, Halcyon said to me that you are Asterisking the hard way :D
03:45:24 <Ampera> because FreePBX is a broken piece of shit that managed to work far far worse than doing it myself.
03:45:49 <Ampera> at least part of that is down to running literally the oldest Linux kernel they can possibly get away with
03:46:54 <Ampera> I installed it, it was a pain in the ass, the installer kept breaking, and once I did get it installed, it still broke in a billion different places with permissions set incorrectly absolutely everywhere, and once I got all the ones I could see fixed, the DAHDI subsystem completely broke with a cryptic error I couldn't find a solution for
03:47:15 <Ampera> I'm actually having no trouble with the software side of things, the PBX works perfectly fine and does exactly what it's supposed to do. It's the hardware that keeps breaking.
03:48:13 <Ampera> Out of all of the stuff I tried, FreeBSD has worked the best, as I can run the DAHDI drivers on the most recent kernel no problems, whereas Linux needs LTS4.4

04:22:34 <coppice_> Ampera: are you unable to use the latest version of DAHDI ?
04:22:56 <Ampera> coppice_, no, they dropped support for my card 3.x onwards
04:24:17 <coppice_> oh, you have one of those not-quite-clone cards don't you?
04:24:27 <Ampera> aye
04:24:30 <Ampera> the cheap ones
04:38:54 <coppice_> which one do you have?

05:03:45 <Ampera> coppice_, TDM400 clone
05:08:49 <coppice_> which one, though? the true clones don't need special handling
05:09:01 <Ampera> No clue, it was sold as genuine
05:09:10 <Ampera> and it does not need special handling
05:09:18 <Ampera> *all* TDM400s, even the genuine ones, lost support in 3.x
05:09:30 <coppice_> so, why can't you use the latest version of DAHDI?
05:09:37 <Ampera> *all* TDM400s, even the genuine ones, lost support in 3.x
05:12:09 <coppice_> that was a pretty scumbaggy move

19:03:48 * Halcyon prods Ampera back
19:06:43 <steve30> i should get a coffee
19:06:49 <Halcyon> Morning Steve :)
19:10:30 * steve30 is playing with his Amiga 500
19:14:21 <Halcyon> Did Vicious finally finish downloading?
19:14:29 <steve30> no, it failed
19:14:40 <Halcyon> Hm
19:14:47 <Halcyon> I might get Ampera to try when he is back
19:18:43 <steve30> I'm contemplating going to the gym
19:20:51 <Halcyon> For a perv? :P
19:21:10 <steve30> what else? :p
19:21:24 <Halcyon> Some people go to work out :P
19:21:54 <Halcyon> I mean, I don't ;-)
19:38:12 * T3sl4 waves at Halcyon
19:39:02 <Halcyon> Hey T3sl4
19:40:31 <EEVBlog> New EEVBlog Tweet: NEW Video on EEVblog2! Merry Solar Roadways Christmas! https://t.co/E2g1QsZ6HY
19:42:48 <steve30> Don't think I'll bother with the gym today. I'll stay here and play Holiday Lemmings instead :)
19:44:01 <Halcyon> Heh
19:48:35 <steve30> I need to ring someone to see if he'll give me a lift to the Amiga group on Saturday.
19:56:03 <Halcyon> I'd give you a lift if I were closer
20:01:34 <steve30> If you come to the amiga group, you'd get to chat to Rodney :)
20:01:40 * steve30 grins evily
20:01:47 <Halcyon> Is Rodney your whipping boy?
20:01:53 <Halcyon> (I mean that literally)
20:02:02 <steve30> No
20:02:17 <steve30> He just talks to people continuously about stuff no one understands :D
20:02:17 <Halcyon> Oh, who's Rodney?
20:02:29 <Halcyon> Hah, such as?
20:03:46 <steve30> He's the bloke on the right
20:03:47 <steve30> https://www.flickr.com/photos/lincsamigagroup/3985901797/in/dateposted/
20:04:16 <Halcyon> ROFL that photo says 1000 words
20:04:45 <steve30> Usually he's on about things like how people are doing things with modern computers that he was doing with an Amiga 500 decades ago
20:04:48 <Halcyon> Rodney looks like he is boring the fuck out of the other guy
20:05:31 <steve30> yup
20:05:53 <Halcyon> "Back in my day..."
20:05:56 <Halcyon> And such
20:06:42 <steve30> He usually works his way around everyone...
20:07:09 <Halcyon> At least I could pretend his accent it too thick and I have NFI what he is saying :P
20:07:17 <steve30> James, whom i need to give me a lift is fairly quiet at meetings, but he certainly suffers 'Rodney syndrome' when in the car.
20:07:30 <Halcyon> *is
20:08:13 <steve30> mmm, my Amiga 500 PSU smells nice
20:08:22 <Halcyon> Like old electronics/
20:08:23 <Halcyon> ?
20:08:39 <steve30> kinda
20:11:06 <T3sl4> hm, square waves have 44.7% THD
20:11:40 <Halcyon> It's hip to be a square
20:14:09 <coppice_> T3sl4: using which form of THD?
20:14:28 <T3sl4> that one
20:15:13 <T3sl4> wait, did i forget to subtract the fundamental? is it 23%
20:15:25 <coppice_> I think I've found 5 forms of THD so far, but I'm sure there are others lurking out there
20:15:51 <T3sl4> THD(square) = (zeta(2) - 1) / zeta(2)
20:15:58 <T3sl4> duh
20:15:59 <coppice_> should you subtract the fundamental?
20:16:37 <T3sl4> what would i be getting a ratio against if not?
20:17:19 <coppice_> haven't you met the various formulae? The IEC way, The IEEE way, and so on?
20:18:24 <T3sl4> just using parseval's theorem and the literal definition that "THD" stands for
20:19:25 <coppice_> using parseval I assume you are looking at a power ratio. There are also amplitude ratios. There are harmonics/total ratios. There are harmonics/fundamental ratios
20:19:57 <coppice_> some scales top out at 100%. Some got up to hundreds of percent
20:20:40 <coppice_> some people use a suffix, like THDF for harmonics/fundamental, and THDR for harmonics/total
20:20:57 <T3sl4> i prefer to use THDPMPO
20:21:12 <orbii> i had a PMPO once, but it hurt in my THD
20:21:52 <coppice_> I never realised there were so many formulae for THD until I worked on power analysis, and the reading seldmon matched between instruments :)
20:23:48 <coppice_> I think I ended up implementing 3 forms in my own analysis software, which were the 3 commonest I found
20:42:05 <Halcyon> PMPO, gees, I haven't seen that on anything for a long time
20:46:20 * steve30 passes Halcyon 1000000000 watts
20:52:56 * T3sl4 gives steve30 50,000 unstoppable watts

21:01:14 <Halcyon> Would you be able to do a little test for me?
21:01:33 <T3sl4> ?
21:01:49 <Halcyon> I'm trying to get to the bottom of this download speed issue with Steve
21:01:58 <Halcyon> Can you download something from my Cloud server?
21:02:09 <steve30> yup
21:02:21 <T3sl4> where the hell is your cloud server
21:02:31 <steve30> In the cloud
21:02:36 * T3sl4 finger-guns "ayyyy"
21:02:39 <Halcyon> Steve, would you mind sharing your creds with T3sl4 ? Just so I don't have to set up another users
21:02:52 <Halcyon> *user
21:03:08 <Halcyon> Feel free to reset your password if you don't trust him :P
21:03:29 <steve30> I can't remember the password! (yes I know i only changed it yesterday)
21:03:45 <Halcyon> So how do you login?
21:04:02 <steve30> it logged me in automatically
21:04:08 <Halcyon> Hah, you're hopeless
21:04:18 <Halcyon> Standby T3sl4
21:04:22 <steve30> Currently 128KB/s :)
21:12:49 <Halcyon> Ah bugger it, my laptop needs to be on a different IP range to administer it
21:12:53 <Halcyon> Later problem
21:13:38 <Halcyon> Anyway I'm off to bed
21:13:58 <T3sl4> hah

23:29:47 <steve30> Halcyon, for the record, the download just went up to >300KB/s
23:35:18 <coppice_> Our new TV arrived. Now we have a huge pile of polystrene foam to dispose of. I thought they were supposed to be cutting down on this stuff
23:40:01 <T3sl4> coppice_: easy, got a 100ml of acetone?
23:41:38 <coppice_> most things seem to be packed in a hybrid of cardboard and polystrene these days. LG just used huge blocks of polystyrene for this
