00:35:17 <DHess_US> There are new and emerging forms of nuclear energy technology that are very different from the old smokestack reactors people tend to picture when they think nuclear energy and its on these newer technologies that well focus.
00:35:24 <DHess_US> WTF? Smokestack?
00:35:58 <DHess_US> If that is the level of knowledge displayed, then it is not going anywhere.
00:36:28 <DHess_US> All I am calling for is an inquiry as to whether its a feasible option to ensure we are up to date with the latest information.
00:36:34 <DHess_US> You have the latest information. Smokestacks!

00:55:10 <Ampera> DHess_US, Chernobyl was a smokestack reactor.

13:11:39 <Halcyon> Steve :)
13:12:26 <steve30> My graphics card had crashed again when I woke up. Weird.
13:12:55 <Halcyon> :(
13:13:02 <Halcyon> Is it an AMD card?
13:14:28 <steve30> yes
13:14:32 <steve30> Radeon 7770
13:14:46 <Halcyon> Could be a heat related issue?
13:14:53 <Halcyon> AMD cards are like space heaters
13:15:01 <Halcyon> We've had a bunch of them die at work
13:15:25 <steve30> Could be, but it survived the heat wave last week, and it worked fine in my old computer for a few years
13:16:13 <Halcyon> Just check that the heatsink/fan isn't blocked with dust and there is reasonable air flow
13:16:24 <Halcyon> Otherwise, chop it up to an AMD instability
13:16:53 <steve30> there's no dust. Airflow won't be as good as my old PC but should be OK
13:17:12 <Halcyon> Can you view the temperature through the Radeon software?
13:17:46 <steve30> I don't have any radeon software installed; I'm using the built in debian drivers
13:17:53 <Halcyon> Ah right
13:21:45 <DHess_US> Could be the power supply.
13:23:21 <Halcyon> It could be, but in my experience, power supply issues are quite rare
13:23:33 <Halcyon> Usually a power supply will fail in an obvious way
13:26:38 <steve30> here's what it was displaying today when i turned the monitor on: http://stevecoates.net/stuff/radeon_crash.JPG
13:29:14 <steve30> Here's when it crashed a few weeks ago. I was watching YouTube at the time. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x7TI26abjmY&feature=youtu.be
13:30:45 <Halcyon> Could be anything, but yeh it's definitely not happy
13:31:18 <Halcyon> I'd be looking at temperature. Do you have a thermocouple you can shove in the heatsink?
13:31:26 <Halcyon> It will give you some kind of idea of how hot it's getting
13:31:35 <steve30> i'll check it now
13:34:35 <steve30> Heatsink is barely 35 C
13:34:49 <Halcyon> Mmmm
13:35:03 <Halcyon> Did you get close to the chip itself?
13:35:20 <steve30> nope
13:35:57 <Halcyon> I'd expect the outer edges of the heatsink to be cool, but you want to try and get as close to the GPU as possible
13:36:07 <Halcyon> They usually measure temperature internally
13:38:06 <steve30> As close as I can get is still barely 35
13:38:23 <Halcyon> Perfectly normal then
13:38:29 <Halcyon> Not sure? Could be failing?
13:39:11 <steve30> maybe time for a new on
13:39:27 <steve30> *one
13:40:06 <Halcyon> Just confirm it's not some kind of weird driver issues
13:40:08 <Halcyon> *issue
13:42:10 <Ampera> Looks like a possible memory issue.
13:42:15 <Ampera> by my guess anyways
13:42:25 <Halcyon> Yah could very well be
13:42:36 <Halcyon> Not sure what killed our AMD cards at work, never bothered to find out
13:42:37 <steve30> could be drivers. I've never had any luck with Linux drivers in all the years I've been usingit.
13:43:00 <Ampera> That's strange, I've found Linux graphics drivers to be on an order of magnitude better than NT ones.
13:43:11 <Ampera> I don't have too many AMD systems, but the ones I've used have always worked perfectly.
13:43:17 <Halcyon> Yeh I can't say I've had too many dramas with video drivers either
13:43:30 <Ampera> That being said, you need to know how to use them, keep them up to date, etc.
13:45:32 <steve30> I think I'll definitely look into getting air conditioning later on in the year.
13:48:41 <Ampera> Well after a load of messing around with PXE and netboot in general, I've come to one conclusion.
13:48:44 <Ampera> It's all fucking shit.
13:49:18 <Ampera> Not necessarily even the PXE implementation side of things, but how people have used it, making it as hard as possible to boot into operating environments for most systems.
14:13:51 <steve30> I've just decided to play a game with the graphics settings turned up. That's ramped up the system fans :)
14:41:06 <steve30> Now it's really kicking the heat out. Heatsink is 60C
14:41:14 <Ampera> 60C isn't much
14:41:52 <steve30> No, but its made the case nice and toasty, and if it were winter, it would make a nice hand warmer :)
