15:05:37 <Ampera> The sincere downside of using Linux now is I find myself unable to stop telling people about it
15:05:44 <Ampera> even though I know it makes me an annoying faggot
15:05:51 <seaner> welcome to the club Ampera
15:06:05 <Ampera> welcome? I've been here for months
15:06:10 <Ampera> maybe even about a year
15:06:10 <seaner> :P
15:06:39 <Ampera> What I have seen though is amazing. Linux truly has become a viable desktop platform, especially for someone like me who enjoys gaming.
15:07:19 <seaner> I guess with Linux, most of the development has been on the actual OS, rather than the GUI
15:07:30 <seaner> whereas I think Windows/mac the GUI has been the focus
15:07:38 <seaner> so with Linux you get quite a stable desktop environment as a result
15:07:43 <Ampera> Proton's been pretty good, but my UI was developed before Linux even existed
15:08:41 <Ampera> The thing with Linux desktops, which really sets it apart from other options, is that you have a plethora of incredibly diverse and interesting choices that make people like me who like to tinker and experiment very happy.
15:09:06 <Ampera> So I can find an option that /really/ works for me, and allows me to work more efficiently then I would on a similar system.
15:10:33 <Ampera> seaner what do you use
15:11:21 Join: Bluenote ([email protected]) to #EEVblog
15:11:38 <seaner> I use Win10 as my desktop
15:12:09 <seaner> balanced out by the handful of connections to mostly Ubuntu machines
15:12:38 <seaner> plus I actually use Win10 Bash (Ubuntu)
15:13:04 <seaner> one day I'll migrate my main ops to Linux, probably Ubuntu
15:13:42 <seaner> reality is though I probably don't need to
15:15:42 <Ampera> seaner, I currently am a 100% Unix/Linux environment. My desktop, tablet, and HTPC runs Arch Linux with Window Maker, KDE, and Window Maker as WM/DEs. My server runs FreeBSD with, you guessed it Window Maker for a UI
15:16:58 <seaner> what do you think of window maker?
15:17:01 <seaner> KDE was ok back in the day
15:17:51 <Ampera> I think Window Maker is the best windowing experience a person can have. I've never seen something with such a flawless combination of uniquely useful features, incredible customizability, and a certain old style I just happen to love.
15:18:44 <Ampera> It's also incredibly lightweight and runs on everything. Dockapps are plentiful and cover most interesting grounds for expandability, but wmaker is old, little known, and doesn't get the love it deserves in terms of updates and feature improvements.
15:19:43 <Ampera> Modern KDE is alright, between it and GNOME, I'd pick it any day, but the issue is that both of them are in a league of their own of overly bloated, overly popular desktop envrionments that had just taken the whole thing too seriously, and have also become rather slow and bloated.
15:20:10 <seaner> yeah bloated isn't good
15:20:16 <seaner> they've always been on the heavy side
15:20:28 <seaner> I guess early on especially the focus is to get something that works
15:20:30 <seaner> and make improvements later
15:21:04 <Ampera> That's why I like Window Maker, because it has a lot of really neat features, and does a lot, but is currently only using 2.5mb of RAM
15:21:33 <seaner> impressive!
15:22:11 <Ampera> It's just a window manager, so it needs things like file explorers and some other small utilities to make it complete, but I'll give you a screenshot of my machine, one second.
15:23:18 <seaner> :)
15:23:29 <Ampera> http://prntscr.com/n7864h
15:23:56 <Ampera> I use XFE for most of that, because it's a really nice old style file manager with some really good features, and I also love things named after X
15:24:31 <Ampera> That NEXT logo isn't standard, I added that, primarily as a joke
15:40:55 <Ampera> I think one of the things I currently like the most about Linux is SFTP and SSHFS
15:44:26 <seaner> haha wow that looks very traditional!
15:44:44 <seaner> i like it though
15:44:50 <Ampera> I absolutely love it.
