18:40:23 <Brunius> for when you're not using creative mode
18:43:53 <Steven> whats the point then? oh im playng survival... i need to make a house, better go over and make infinite wood... good thing im roughing it.
18:59:12 <Avatar> creative mode is basically cheat mode for survival

22:33:38 <SpeEn> Hello
22:33:59 <SpeEn> I have some questions regarding the Gamemastery module for 3.5
22:34:06 <SpeEn> Crown of the kobold king
22:35:45 <SpeEn> It refers to the Monster manual for the various encounters
22:36:08 <SpeEn> My question is if I can just use the PF beastiary versions without any modification
22:36:20 <SpeEn> I.E there is a CR 3 Grick
22:36:26 <SpeEn> with 9 HP
22:36:36 <Steven> you can use PF stuff with slight modifications
22:37:19 <Steven> but gricks in pf have 27hp
22:37:33 <Steven> http://www.d20pfsrd.com/bestiary/monster-listings/aberrations/grick
22:37:36 <SpeEn> yeah
22:37:54 <SpeEn> So, with DR 10/magic
22:38:06 <SpeEn> how would that play out if I gave him 27 HP
22:38:43 <Steven> whenever a player hit him with a physical weapon if its not +1 it does 10 less damage
22:38:45 <SpeEn> The group consists of rogue, ranger, fighter, sorcerer & wizard
22:39:19 <SpeEn> yeah, the group has some masterwork items
22:39:23 <Steven> so the fighter, comes up and hits with a longsword for 14 damage, but its just a masterwork longsword
22:39:33 <SpeEn> and the fighter has a +1 dragon-bane longsword
22:39:56 <Steven> so you take the 14 damage subtract 10 and so the fighter actually does the grick 4 damage.
22:40:32 <SpeEn> Yeah, that's what I thought (even tho I had not considered that magic items bypassed the DR)
22:40:58 <Steven> weapons can bypass certain types of DR by what their bonus is.
22:41:05 <Steven> so a +1 bypasses magic
22:41:16 <Steven> a +3 bypasses cold iron and silver
22:41:23 <Steven> a +4 bypasses Adamantine
22:41:40 <Steven> a +5 bypasses alignment
22:41:49 <Steven> and a +6 bypasses epic
22:42:17 <SpeEn> cool, I did not know that
22:42:22 <SpeEn> just starting out =)
22:42:30 <Steven> so if a creature had DR 10/Magic or Silver
22:42:37 <Steven> all the player needs is a +1 weapon to bypass it
22:42:54 <Steven> but if a creature has DR 10/Magic and Silver
22:43:15 <Steven> the player would need a +3 weapon OR a +1 Silver Weapon
22:43:28 <SpeEn> aye
22:43:48 <SpeEn> But do you think I would need to adjust the PF version grick
22:44:03 <SpeEn> down to 9 hp like the module suggests
22:44:05 <Steven> probably not.
22:44:34 <Steven> a player has a +1 dragonbane longsword, so he can bypass the DR
22:44:40 <SpeEn> yeah
22:44:51 <Steven> and you've got wizard and a sorc.
22:44:55 <SpeEn> yeah
22:45:00 <Steven> so as long as they arent fighting a pack of them
22:45:06 <SpeEn> color spraying bastards both of them
22:45:07 <Steven> it should be fairly easy fight
22:45:59 <SpeEn> Yeah, I guess so
22:46:22 <SpeEn> Thanks man, you've been a great help
22:46:29 <Steven> if you really think they are going to have a problem
22:46:36 <Steven> you could apply the young template.
22:46:46 <SpeEn> aye
22:47:00 <Steven> http://www.d20pfsrd.com/bestiary/monster-listings/templates/simple-template-young-cr-1
22:47:10 <SpeEn> Thanks
22:47:17 <SpeEn> I do all the templates in hero lab
22:47:23 <SpeEn> so it's pretty easy
22:47:40 <Steven> but really, gricks are fairly easy once someone has a magical weapon
22:48:02 <SpeEn> Yeah, I did not realise that the magic weapons bypassed aswell
22:48:43 <SpeEn> I thought they where going to have to kite it down with acid splash and other low level spells
22:49:07 <Steven> heh, i've done that in a game or two
22:49:26 <SpeEn> =)
22:49:58 <Steven> giant misquito basically 10ft reach before lunge
22:50:13 <SpeEn> hehe
22:50:19 <Steven> bout 20 damage a turn, attach with con drain
22:50:31 <Steven> flying 15ft off the ground
22:50:34 <SpeEn> lol
22:50:44 <Steven> fast healing 5
22:51:16 <SpeEn> hehe
22:51:22 <Steven> kited it with magic missile from the bard and a cranewing monk tanking it about 150ft to a house
22:51:26 <Steven> got it trapped inside
22:51:34 <Steven> and burned the house down around it
22:51:43 <SpeEn> nice!
22:51:54 <Steven> because we coulld not do damage to it.
22:52:17 <SpeEn> My group is just starting out, never played any table top rpg's before
22:52:28 <Steven> how many in your group?
22:52:30 <SpeEn> so everyone's pretty fixed in the wow box mindset
22:52:50 <SpeEn> we are currently 5/6 pc's
22:52:52 <Steven> thats a difficult box for some people to get out of.
22:53:03 <SpeEn> yeah
22:53:04 <Steven> which country you live in?
22:53:07 <SpeEn> norway
22:53:30 <SpeEn> fortuneatly we got one experienced rpg player that joined
22:53:50 <SpeEn> we have played 2 sessions
22:54:01 <SpeEn> the experienced guy joined for the second session
22:54:08 <SpeEn> and the game altered very much
22:54:10 <Steven> awesome.
22:54:22 <Steven> have you guys looked at PFS at all?
22:54:27 <SpeEn> I have
22:54:27 <Steven> Pathfinder Society.
22:54:40 <SpeEn> But I need to read up some more
22:54:43 <Steven> I try to get everyone into it.
22:54:54 <Steven> Well if you have any questions feel free to ask
22:55:03 <SpeEn> Yeah man, you've been great
22:55:11 <Steven> I am one of the volunteer campaign coordinators.
22:55:19 <SpeEn> Where are you from=
22:55:20 <SpeEn> ?
22:55:30 <Steven> I'm from Washington State, USA
22:55:49 <SpeEn> Nice!
22:55:59 <SpeEn> Sometimes I wish I lived in the USA
22:56:13 <Steven> well... it has its ups and downs.
22:56:22 <SpeEn> It's hard getting people together for stuff like RPGs in norway
22:56:38 <SpeEn> just 5 million people
22:56:45 <SpeEn> spread out all over the place
22:56:45 <Steven> well, i dont think i know of any organized play in Norway.
22:56:57 <Steven> let me go check
22:57:06 <SpeEn> Nope, I think i browsed that list
22:57:09 <SpeEn> didnt find anything
22:57:11 <Mekkis> I thought it was pretty active in sweden
22:57:32 <Steven> looks like finland has a fair bit.
22:57:49 <SpeEn> yeah, that makes sense
22:58:27 <Steven> well hey you never know, get a regular group you might just have to put an application in.
22:58:57 <SpeEn> Yeah, atleast 4-5 of us are pretty excited about it
22:59:04 <Steven> we're pretty friendly here except for the occasional passionate discussion.
22:59:14 <SpeEn> the rest are abit scared of all the rules
22:59:19 <Steven> or 45 minute surprise rounds lol
22:59:37 <SpeEn> =)
23:00:20 <SpeEn> I'm planning on running a few modules now to get everyone familiar with the system
23:00:33 <SpeEn> then when I feel that everyone's comfortable
23:00:43 <SpeEn> I'll try to run the Rise of the runelords AP
23:00:56 <Steven> well dont worry about the rules, the great thing is that even if you've gotten them wrong for months or a year you can always just look them up and then go "Hey i was wrong we're doing it this way from now on cause its right'
23:01:21 <Steven> and it may cause some grumbling, but in nearly every case its for the betterment of the players.
23:01:42 <SpeEn> Yeah
23:02:03 <SpeEn> We've currently been playing without AoO and CM's
23:02:22 <Steven> ouch those are where combats get interesting.
23:02:27 <SpeEn> Yeah
23:02:29 <Steven> the risk vs reward.
23:02:47 <SpeEn> So I'm thinking we need to introduce atleast one of them next session
23:02:57 <Steven> do i want to take an AoO to get up there and heal a friend....
23:03:37 <Steven> i would start the session with an introduction to what threatened squares are.
23:04:03 <SpeEn> Ok
23:04:41 <Steven> since AoOs work off the basis of doing something in a threatened square
23:04:51 <SpeEn> yeah
23:05:05 <Steven> really if you can stand to do it, if you read through the combat section of the Core Rule Book
23:05:19 <SpeEn> But I'm thinking they would benefit from having the charge available
23:05:36 andrey ([email protected]) has joined #d&d
23:05:37 <SpeEn> Yeah I'm reading the CRB all the time
23:05:52 <SpeEn> and www.d20pfsrd.com
23:05:53 <Steven> you'll have a great footing for when it comes to figuring out how to run and play a game.
23:06:26 <SpeEn> But let me run this by you
23:06:31 <SpeEn> Last session
23:06:32 <Steven> go ahead.
23:06:54 <SpeEn> First of, Have you played master of the fallen fortress?
23:07:05 <Steven> played and GM'd
23:07:17 <SpeEn> cool
23:08:20 <SpeEn> so when the PC's killed of the spider at ground level, instead of climbing the exterior of the tower. They used a grappling hook and ascended up through the fallen staircase
23:08:37 <SpeEn> so everyone's standing inside the staircase at level 2
23:08:47 <Steven> That is what a lot of players do
23:09:32 <SpeEn> The wizard who speaks draconic, listens by the door and hears the troglodytes on the other side speaking about how boring it is just sitting around and guarding the chief's pets
23:10:17 <SpeEn> discussing if they should kill 1 and eat it ( I used 2 yound shocker lizzards instead of one normal)
23:10:31 <SpeEn> to get the leathal damage going
23:11:00 <SpeEn> Now as the wizards tells everyone to be quiet because there's somebody on the other side
23:11:32 <SpeEn> The fighter exclaims something ( I cannot remember ) and the troglodytes hear him and pick up their arms
23:11:41 <SpeEn> going to investigate
23:12:23 <SpeEn> the wizard uses ghost sound to conjure the sound of 4 heavily armored guys to intimidate them to put down their arms
23:12:41 <SpeEn> the troglodites makes their will save
23:12:53 <SpeEn> and continue towards the door
23:13:09 <SpeEn> now they all ready themselves for combat
23:13:18 <SpeEn> question is will they get a surprise round?
23:13:38 <SpeEn> the troglodites opened the door btw
23:13:55 <Steven> not really, they are both aware of each other
23:14:08 <SpeEn> yeah, so just normal initiative
23:14:23 <Steven> yeah pretty much
23:14:39 <Steven> now if the players had opened the door and stormed in, they would have gotten one.
23:14:46 <SpeEn> yeah
23:15:13 <SpeEn> also, the burning skeletons
23:15:32 <SpeEn> do you roll for fire damage before the adjecent PC's turn?
23:16:25 <Steven> when their turn starts they take 1d6 fire damage
23:16:49 <Steven> before they get to act
23:16:52 <SpeEn> ok
23:16:58 <SpeEn> so what happened here is the following
23:17:05 <SpeEn> they pick the lock to that room
23:17:11 <SpeEn> the sorcerer opens the door
23:17:21 <SpeEn> see's the skeletons and closes the door
23:17:46 <SpeEn> the ranger then kicks the sorcerer in the back, causing him to roll on his face into the room
23:18:07 <SpeEn> now the skeletons approach and hit him for some damage
23:18:09 <Steven> so violent towards his compatriots!
23:18:39 <Steven> brb, gotta put wood on the fire
23:18:42 <SpeEn> =)
23:19:09 <SpeEn> So anyway, I thought I should roll for fire damage during the same turn
23:19:18 <SpeEn> but that resulted in the sorcerer dying
23:19:23 <SpeEn> so I reread the rules
23:19:41 <SpeEn> and figured out that he would not take that damage until just before his turn
23:20:19 <SpeEn> the players then metagamed and figured if they picked up the sorcerer and threw him back into the staircase room, he would be ok
23:21:06 <Steven> slight metagame, the skeletons are ablaze in fire and its not a stretch that standing next to them would be just a bit dangerous.
23:21:07 <SpeEn> Now how would you play out that issue, with picking him up and throwing him
23:22:14 <SpeEn> The fighter did the act
23:23:41 <SpeEn> the sorcerer is a gnome btw
23:23:53 <Steven> I think its one of those times where the GM gets to decide how he wants to handle it. Every GM is a little different, there are a couple people down at my local shop who would make sure that sorc is unconscious and dying
23:24:01 <Steven> and theres no way to save him
23:24:41 <Steven> but there are others who would have no problem at all with the table pulling the sorc back into the room.
23:24:48 <SpeEn> Yeah, I did not want to discourage the guy during his second session. So I just let it happen
23:25:45 <Steven> there isnt a right or wrong answer to that situation. So long as players aren't breaking the rules or combat isnt getting horribly derailed
23:26:08 <SpeEn> yeah, I think it worked out
23:26:17 <SpeEn> they still had a hard time taking the skeletons down
23:26:34 <Steven> then as long as the players are having fun, theres nothing wrong with letting people do what they want.
23:26:42 <SpeEn> even tho they would have had a even harder time with AoO
23:26:51 <Steven> yeah the fight is pretty nasty
23:27:15 <SpeEn> they moved into combat, hit, retreated out of reach
23:27:26 <SpeEn> or the rogue and fighter did
23:28:14 <Steven> so how did they move into, attack, and then retreat?
23:29:16 <SpeEn> I.E fighter moves up towards a skeleton (2 squares), does his 2handed attack, moves back (2 squares)
23:30:13 <SpeEn> he should have suffered an AoO on the retreat during the first round
23:30:20 <Steven> alright, so heres some rules knowledge for you.
23:30:25 <SpeEn> sweet
23:30:42 <Steven> when you move, you lose any unspent movement once you end your movement.
23:31:50 <Steven> so if you have 30ft(6 squares) of movement, use a move action to move 2 of them up to an enemy and end your movement.
23:32:23 <Steven> use a standard action to attack, you only have a swift action and free actions remaining
23:32:36 <Steven> so you cannot move away before they have a chance to hit you.
23:32:48 Alynn has quit (Quit: If you think nobody cares, try missing a few payments)
23:33:01 <SpeEn> hum
23:33:10 <Steven> there is a feat that allows people to do the action you describe called Spring attack.
23:34:55 <SpeEn> Yeah
23:35:09 <SpeEn> "In a normal round, you can perform a standard action and a move action, or you can perform a full-round action. You can also perform one swift action and one or more free actions. You can always take a move action in place of a standard action."
23:36:00 <Steven> now you know, and now combat will take on more complex tactics.
23:36:16 <SpeEn> So basicly what you're saying is that what we did was 2x Move actions
23:36:38 <Steven> yes, 2 moves and 1 standard. which is more than you have available.
23:36:42 <SpeEn> aye
23:37:34 <SpeEn> But the fighter could have moved to a non-adjacent square, waited for the skeletons, done a full-attack, then a 5-foot step?
23:37:40 <SpeEn> not in the same round offcourse
23:37:58 <SpeEn> the full attack and 5-foot in the same round tho
23:38:05 <Steven> yes
23:38:07 <SpeEn> aye
23:38:11 <SpeEn> complex
23:38:12 <SpeEn> =)
23:38:29 <SpeEn> I'll go through that before we start next session
23:38:40 <SpeEn> Felt kind of like cheating as we went through it
23:39:05 <Steven> Have you been giving out Chronicles at the end of your sessions?
23:39:16 <SpeEn> hum
23:39:48 <Steven> a chronicle looks like the last page on Master of the fallen fortress.
23:40:15 <SpeEn> that's for PFS isnt it?
23:40:29 <Steven> it is, i was just wondering if you had given any out.
23:40:33 <SpeEn> no
23:40:49 <Steven> no biggie
23:40:52 <SpeEn> I run the session with hero lab, so I add what they find as we're playing
23:41:08 <Steven> i wonder when the next time we are going to be playing a pfs game
23:41:10 <SpeEn> I then update their character sheet and upload to our facebook group
23:41:47 <SpeEn> inbetween games
23:42:15 <Steven> i only mention this because we could invite you to come and play, and the best way to learn the system is to sit down for a game.
23:42:40 <SpeEn> How would that play out?
23:42:52 <Steven> We play online all the time.
23:43:20 <Steven> we have two Adventure Paths(like super modules) being played this weekend.
23:44:11 Gamera2 has quit (Quit: )
23:44:49 <SpeEn> what AP's?
23:45:42 <Steven> Serpents Skull and Way of the Wicked
23:46:13 <Steven> I'm currently GMing a Rise of the Runelords at the local shop.
23:46:23 <SpeEn> cool
23:46:39 <SpeEn> do you use roll20, or?
23:47:21 <Steven> every GM prefers things a bit differently, i usually use our local program CA(combat assistant), this channel, and Skype.
23:47:27 <Steven> others prefer roll20
23:47:42 <Steven> teamspeak, or googlehangouts
23:47:57 <SpeEn> cool
23:48:00 <Steven> whatever makes it easiest to game really.
23:48:04 <SpeEn> yeah
23:48:23 <Steven> we have two bots in the channel that help with rolling
23:48:28 <Steven> !throw 2d20
23:48:28 <diebot> Steven, 2d20: [2d20=20,4] 24
23:48:36 <SpeEn> =)
23:48:59 <Steven> i occasionally use them when im rolling channels for my life oracle.
23:49:00 <SpeEn> How long are your sessions?
23:49:13 <Steven> PFS sessions usually take about 4-5 hours
23:49:31 <SpeEn> When do you start?
23:49:34 <Steven> but online you have to figure a scenario takes about 5-6 hours or longer.
23:50:13 <Steven> well most of the channels occupants are in Australia.
23:50:25 <Steven> so they start in the AM
23:50:35 <Steven> which is usually around my 5pm
23:51:53 <Steven> which would be like 9pm in London i believe.
23:51:54 <SpeEn> so your like 18 hours behind them?
23:52:03 <Steven> just about that much
23:52:13 <SpeEn> heh
23:52:24 <SpeEn> could work, If I wasnt married =)
23:52:52 <Steven> well you never know, we have a few guys from over in london who stop in once in a while to play
23:53:06 <Steven> and i'm a care giver so my hours are kinda crazy.
23:53:53 <SpeEn> Sounds very tempting, and I'll defiently let you know if the opportunity arises. But I have problems sitting through a 45 minute long league of legends game
23:54:33 <SpeEn> Wife hates everything that has to do with computers
23:54:34 <Steven> hey me too!
23:54:43 <Steven> i mean with the a LoL thing.
23:54:43 <SpeEn> probably because of WoW =)
23:55:00 <Steven> perfectly understandable
23:55:14 <Steven> course... if she were playing as well...
23:55:22 <SpeEn> Yeah, working on it!
23:55:24 <Steven> lol
23:55:50 <Steven> but really, anytime you have questions we're usually around to answer them
23:56:02 <Steven> if you dont get a response its usually because everyone is either sleeping, or at work.
23:56:07 <SpeEn> =)
23:56:17 <SpeEn> Yeah I must say I did not expect this kind of service
23:56:28 <SpeEn> the internet is usually just filled with retards
23:56:44 <Steven> i usually leave my computer on all day just idling and lurking in the channel
23:57:13 <SpeEn> It's been a long time since I idled in IRC. But it looks like I just found a reason to take it up again
23:57:59 <Steven> well the great thing about this place is you have a wide selection of gaming types to pool an opinion from.
23:58:11 <SpeEn> Nice.
23:58:19 <SpeEn> The experienced guy I was talking about
23:58:42 <SpeEn> He had'nt played d&d for about 15 years
23:58:50 <SpeEn> He's currently playing Vampires
23:58:54 <SpeEn> and Kult
23:59:01 <Steven> played vampires for a bit
23:59:15 <Steven> never got around to kult
23:59:16 <SpeEn> His vampire group have been going for 12 years now
23:59:22 <SpeEn> with the same PCs
23:59:31 <Steven> geeze... do they just basically own the world now?
23:59:37 <Steven> have the colonized mars?
23:59:40 <SpeEn> I dont know
23:59:43 <SpeEn> But last year
23:59:45 <SpeEn> one of them died
23:59:47 <Steven> 12 years... long time.
