08:46:24 <Mekkis> The number of times my ex-VC has said "I'm a 4-star VC" in order to justify his rulings (such as that delivering a touch spell provokes AoO, or that mounts can't take a five-foot step after their attacks to let their riders attack) cements the fact that appeal to authority is counterproductive.)
08:47:06 <Mekkis> I recall that Stephen White always maintains that he's a VC, but this doesn't mean that he knows all the rules.
08:47:40 <Avatar> I don't remember stephen ever getting into a rules dispute
09:04:35 <Mekkis> he doesn't
10:10:17 <Lintor> stephen has put right said that most people know the rules better than him. that he has his position due to his ability to organize and run awesome games
10:10:32 <Lintor> (I added the awesome games part)
11:55:45 <Steven1> Its the first time i've ever said I'm a 5 star gm so i know what im talking about. If you guys had a person that constantly said that i could see why you'd be upset by somebody saying that.
11:59:08 <Steven1> However, I explained the rules and told him to look them up in a polite manner to which i was told he knew better then I did because he'd been playing for 8 years.
13:42:15 <Lintor> On steven1's side though avatar don't you run with the rule that there are no rules disputes at your table's and they are to be taken up afterwards
13:53:17 Steven1 is now known as Steven
14:01:47 <s_gmusic> Want to use Occult for my Aasimar, not sure what class to build. :/
14:10:03 <Steven> Build a water bender
14:17:08 <s_gmusic> I skipped over the Kineticist entry since a few locals wouldn't shut up about it, I'll get back to that one eventually. Was thinking Psychic or Occultist at first, but then I seen the Onmyoji and thought about a Spiritualist (which seems really close to the Summoner).
15:17:34 <Steven> yeah spiritualist is a pretty cool class.
17:34:16 <Avatar> to dip
17:35:19 <Avatar> Lintor: I make a ruling and say look it up later, but if someone's going to be unmoving on their position to that degree, it's worth looking it up there and then
17:35:52 <Avatar> there's moving on with the game and then there's keeping the peace
17:36:24 <Avatar> if it still doesn't quell after that, you escalate again and talk to them privately to get them to sort out their shit or walk
17:38:08 <Avatar> it might be worth being clear, I wouldn't use those words
17:39:23 <Avatar> I'd reason with them that that's the rule, they read it themselves, ask them if they want me to override the rule or get their take on it, reaffirm or change my stance, and remind them everyone's here to have fun, please try to settle down and enjoy it with everyone else, okay?
17:39:51 <Avatar> and if that still doesn't work, then I'd ask them to leave the table for everyone else's benefit

19:13:28 <Steven> Alright avatar, and lets say you do that and it escalates to the point where you're going to have to ask the player to leave the table. Its a 3 player table w/ 1 pregen to start with, you kick him off and now its a 2 player table w/ 1 pregen which would be an illegal table and the game is over.
19:39:38 <Avatar> so add another pregen to make up his spot
19:39:58 <Avatar> it's not like you planned it to run that way, but it's worse to keep the trouble player there
19:40:22 <Avatar> or to just say "sorry guys either we play with the dickhead or we wrap up. what'll it be?"
20:10:00 <Steven> according to the guide you've gotta stop the game. You need 3 players to run a legal game.
20:10:51 <Steven> i want pumpkin pie right now something fierce.
20:37:11 <Steven> they had no pumpkin pie at the store.
20:37:16 <Steven> much sadness was had
20:51:06 <Steven> votin... so many horrible items.
21:32:26 <Avatar> what does the guide say about how to handle jerks
21:38:53 <Steven> table variation
21:39:16 <Steven> seriously want pumpkin pie right now.

22:17:32 <Mekkis> Seriously, if it's a choice between providing a good experience for the players, and following the rules, I guarantee that it's the rules that are going to lose out.
22:30:59 <Steven> and what if its new players and one veteran player who is demanding that you follow his homebrew rules intead of the rules as written.

22:45:13 <Mekkis> explain to the veteran that you've made the ruling..
22:47:55 <Steven> but what if he's played for 8 years and obviously knows the rules better then you.
