00:19:58 <Kuschelpony> have you experience how far the "zero" adjustment of a moving coil meter can be pushed without seriously degrading accuracy? For example to modify from 0...3A to -1...0...2A ?
00:23:57 <rust_collector> no, but, from thinking about it, I think the answer is....it depends
00:24:38 <rust_collector> guessing different meters react differently
00:37:16 <K> couldnt you just set as needed and then re-calibrate with known values?
00:38:02 <K> likely near linear compensation would work
00:38:12 <K> (but i have not tried it, just an idea)
00:39:27 <Kuschelpony> thats my idea anyway, can finetune the shunt
01:28:09 <Ysjoelfir> interesting idea, Kuschelpony. Haven't played around with that though, but.... I like the idea. usually, I found the 0-adjustments to be pretty limited though, in terms of how much to the positive you can get the indicator

01:29:08 <rust_collector> OI! how sweet do you want the steve to be?
01:29:17 <xstevia> :)
01:29:21 <rust_collector> arrr, kids
01:29:23 <Ysjoelfir> Kuschelpony, can you? I mean, of course you can, but you would loose the 0-adjustment option in general, don't you?
01:29:39 <Kuschelpony> perhaps
01:29:58 <xstevia> Apparently there is a persian rug exhibition and sale today.
01:30:09 <Kuschelpony> my idea is a charge-discharge indicator for a mobile battery pack, so its ok if its within a few% accuracy
01:34:01 <rust_collector> xstevia, dont you need a flying rug? see if you can get one with a winsdcreen, and a machinegun mount
01:34:48 <rust_collector> oh, cup holders... you need those
01:36:43 <xstevia> Ooh, flying rugs sounds good. Might have to make do with this e bike though
01:37:12 <rust_collector> well, go see what they have there

03:16:20 <rust_collector> that sounds irish
03:17:14 <Ysjoelfir> I'd love to live in ireland, in a way. in the countryside though. having a little business doing..... dunno, maybe some woodworking or whatever.
03:17:39 <Ysjoelfir> same goes for the land of the norse, too, but thats nothing knew if one knows me, lol
03:18:56 <rust_collector> yes, weird abandoned places, would be nice, if you had a job you could do from home
03:19:54 <Ysjoelfir> exactly that
03:20:15 <Ysjoelfir> so. brb. having to bring to bed this annoying crying worm here
03:21:28 <flyback> btw arch it worked like you said
03:21:38 <flyback> I had a major outage last night
03:21:39 <flyback> <flyback> noisy geneerator output ---> 12v dc smps ----> 12v to 120v ac inverter = square wave but much cleaner power less bulb flicker etc
03:21:40 <flyback> <flyback> in fact I am going to make 2-3 of these thigns so I can run multiple things
03:22:08 <flyback> going to build them with capacitors also for even more smoothing
03:22:41 <Kuschelpony> flyback, so you are building your own double-vonversion UPS
03:22:44 <Kuschelpony> conversion
03:23:00 <flyback> well no it has no battery capacity but it is a power conditioner
03:23:11 <flyback> to clean up the generator output
03:24:23 <flyback> I have a 150 and two 75 watt car inverters plus another one in peices if I put it back together
03:24:40 <flyback> that's like 300w of cleaner power plenty for electronics in an outage
03:24:58 <Kuschelpony> yep
03:25:35 <flyback> actually I can run most stuff from the generator direct it doesn't mind but
03:25:38 <flyback> a) lights suck
03:25:46 <flyback> b) don't want to risk frying the telco modem
03:26:02 <flyback> so I will run them from this buffering circuit :D

03:36:13 <flyback> those are nice
03:36:26 <flyback> the downside is you can't have extra fuel or instant recharge
03:36:29 <flyback> but they are nice
03:37:43 <Kuschelpony> im more interested in solar charging, no mains around there
03:37:51 <flyback> cool
03:38:11 <flyback> some of those power stations have a direct dc input for solar cell
03:38:15 <Kuschelpony> also, it shouldbe possible to add a second battery pack in paralell if ever needed
03:38:31 <Kuschelpony> this one does have, they even claim with an maximum power point tracker
03:38:57 <flyback> lfp cells right?
03:40:58 <Kuschelpony> the currently inexpensive available second hand ones are still usind li-ion cells, only the second version has upgraded to LFP

04:08:22 <MrMobodies> I wonder how this will work out
04:08:59 <MrMobodies> when caught in the act would they be deperate to run away during a chase
04:10:59 <MrMobodies> and only stop until they end up crash their van knowing they're vehicle will be crushed and they'll loose their driving license along with it.
04:14:21 <MrMobodies> I find in one way it sounds great where before it was terribly unfair when homeowners get fined for paying people these cowboys on good faith to just take rubbish down the skip which should be a simple task.
04:15:56 <MrMobodies> The skips/dumps/recycle centers and dumps are tax payer funded but charge businesses.
04:16:29 <MrMobodies> So they have no excuse to do this, fly tip and get away with it leaving their customer with a fine.
04:17:20 <MrMobodies> home owners can get fined if they trace the rubbish back to them like receipts from things
04:18:41 <MrMobodies> I don't think they should have points added on. Just loose everything when caught red handed dumping mass amounts of waste.
04:21:22 <MrMobodies> Joke: In court: You have been found guilty of driving without a license therefore no insurance since you been found dumping wasted.

10:29:27 <MrMobodies> Someone came up to me said to me, you can get a MODERN! WIFI socket that could do ALL THAT using AN APP!
10:29:47 <MrMobodies> I asked "does it require internet?" He said yes.
10:32:08 <MrMobodies> I said, THERE'S NOW WAY I am going to have a MODERN! NEWER! PRETTY! TRENDY! socket set by advanced thinkers for the mass majority. Mass Majority=stupid stupid to these advanced thinkers! that uses a stupid APP! on YOUR or phone PC! that depends on broadband and service to work. Anything I setup I want it in house and MUST continue to function regardless what happens out there.
10:33:23 <MrMobodies> So annoyed he said that to me. I know some might require "an app" to program it for the first time but he said his one needs internet otherwise they don't work and I thought that is one of the most STUPID things ever.
10:33:43 <MrMobodies> what do you think of that?

12:47:24 <flyback> noisy generator 120vac ---> 12vdc smps ----> 12vdc to 120vac square inverter = less noise and led flicker
12:47:39 <flyback> I bet if I added a capacitor in the middle etc it would even better
12:49:40 <flyback> I got 3-4 car inverters so I can make 34 plug in dedicated boards to plug into my generator although I really only need 1-2 for lights and stuff I am scared to run direct off the generator
12:49:45 <flyback> most stuff runs fine direct
12:50:03 <flyback> but the telco modem since it belongs to the isp and hard to replace I didn't want to take chances
12:57:09 <arch> cool
12:57:10 <K> inverter-generator centipede ftw!
13:12:31 <arch> and uhh...what exactly is the point of going from (relatively) pure sine AC to...DC...back up to square wave 120VAC?
13:12:47 <arch> you have 2 extra layers of losses to deal with now
13:13:26 <arch> unless fuel is free, it wouldn't make much sense
13:13:49 <arch> (i totally want a diesel engine generator though, that way i can get "free" electricity by burning old filtered engine oil, etc)
13:25:53 <arch> btw, most of the led flicker is from the cheapass led bulbs from china. get philips long life LED bulbs, $10 or so a pop. those have great filtering. the chinese ones use the least amount of filtering
13:27:58 <rust_collector> I have not tried them myself, but ikea stuff tends to be pretty ok. maybe it can be worth looking at

15:54:22 <Nothing\> ah heyo, if anyone's alive
15:54:52 <Nothing\> jeez, 233 games in my steam library
15:55:05 <Nothing\> i'd be curious to know how much money that amounts to
15:55:53 <steve30> o/
16:10:37 <Nothing\> ヾ(@⌒ー⌒@)ノ
16:10:48 <Nothing\> how's doing, steve?
17:16:13 <Nothing\> fuuuu- broke another tooth
17:17:12 <Nothing\> and that was a chewing tooth. I have all of 2 molars left on my chewing side, they don't line up at all, and the one's chipped and missing fillings
17:18:24 <Nothing\> the other side i have a hole in a molar that goes clear through to my jaw bone. So, the notion of eating rice or black pepper and getting a piece stuck literally my jaw bone is a by disconcerting
17:19:13 <Nothing\> and that side only has 4 molars so it's not much better at chewing. Uless my food is as soft as bread, it's nto happening.
17:19:54 <Nothing\> now my front teeth are falling apart, so it's starting to affect my smile. Which is just all sorts of embarassing.
17:20:22 <Nothing\> not to mention the inevitable smell of having half a dozen dead/abscessed teeth in your mouth :/
17:20:52 <Nothing\> but, I know when I get them fixed, that means getting full dentures
17:21:08 <Nothing\> and that's a bridge I'm not read to cross yet at 41
17:21:46 <Nothing\> i'm already having a hard time adjusting to all of the health issues that seemed to pop up as soon as I turned 40.Or get wores, anyway.
17:22:03 <Nothing\> pretty sure it's some variety of midlife crisis
17:24:04 <Nothing\> heh i bought my mum all sorts of birthday stuff from aliexpress

17:37:55 <Nothing\> heya Kuschelpony how ya doing buddy?
17:38:33 <Kuschelpony> good morning nothing
17:38:44 <Kuschelpony> im not yet doing something special
17:39:32 <Nothing\> me neither. Mum's birthday's coming up and I bought her a bunch of random stuff from Aliexpress I know she'd like. That site is great for mom-shopping.
17:40:31 <Nothing\> I've bought her so many pretty minerals and she's a fan of cats, so there are tons of cat themed earrings, necklaces and other jewelery, or even minerals carved into cats
17:40:58 <Nothing\> and they're less than $5 a piece, so I can buy like 10 or 15 items without breaking the bank
17:42:04 <Nothing\> not having any sorta party or anything, we don't make a big deal about birthdays, neither of us is fond of the idea of getting older. But we still do gifts
17:42:38 <Nothing\> oh, i bought MS Flight Sim 2020
17:43:34 <Nothing\> it was on sale on steam for like 70% off so I picked up it. First legit copy of Flight Sim I've had since fs98
17:44:11 <Nothing\> I almost want to buy a flight stick, it's kinda fun. Except, Niagara Falls were all wonky for some reason.
17:45:04 <Nothing\> ohh Kuschelpony i've a chemistry question for you
17:45:23 <Kuschelpony> not sure if i can help, just ask
17:45:50 <Nothing\> yeah no worries if you can't, you're just always helpful when it comes to these things.
17:47:01 <Nothing\> Anyways, when I was making my coffee, I poured some black coffee into a beaker and added a spoonfull of sodium carbonate. Thinking maybe I could get something to precipitate out a la an acid/base reaction. Even though it wasn't a very strong base like NaOH.
17:47:28 <Nothing\> but what did happen is the coffee took on this really pungent smell like ammonia or some sort of amines
17:47:34 <Nothing\> it was unmistakable
17:48:16 <Nothing\> not sure where amines would have come from
17:48:52 <Nothing\> unless, there were proteins that denatured do to the change in PH, but you'd think boiling it would do that as well...
17:50:27 <Kuschelpony> i have no deeper knowledge about this, but if there is any compound in coffee that can be seen as a kindof salt with an amine as weak base, then your sodium carbonatewas perhaps a stronger base and reacted with the acid-like part, displacing the amine part as weaker base
18:21:09 <Nothing\> ah that makes sense. Sorta like a reduction, or oxidation
18:21:53 <Kuschelpony> i meant more like a displacement
18:22:13 <Nothing\> like making cesium from cesium chloride, you use lithium to kick the cesium off the molecule and replace with the lithium, liberating the cesium
18:22:22 <Kuschelpony> yes
18:22:42 <Nothing\> i just watched a video of a guy making 1.5kg of cesium doing that
18:22:51 <Nothing\> he was German, too =)
18:22:54 <Kuschelpony> or the classic, acetic acid plus sodium carbonate makes sodium acetate plus CO2 bubbling
18:23:01 <Kuschelpony> ah
18:23:16 <Nothing\> heh i've got some beautiful sodium acetate here
18:23:41 <Kuschelpony> 1,5kg cesium, youcan make a looooot of interesting hysical experiments
18:23:43 <Nothing\> it's funny, it's an almost black crystal, but you crush it up and it turns the most beautiful bluish green you've ever seen
18:24:14 <Kuschelpony> hmm, sodium acetate should be colorless transparent, you musthave some interesting other metals in there
18:24:15 <Nothing\> Kuschelpony, he also made in excess of 1kg of potassium
18:24:24 <Nothing\> but yeah, i imagine he'll be doing some fun things in the future
18:24:34 <Nothing\> except the cesium is just in 2 vials lol
18:25:00 <Nothing\> er ampules
18:25:15 <Nothing\> Kuschelpony, oh oh oh no i'm thinking copper acetate
18:25:29 <Kuschelpony> im currently looking around for a trustful 4S high current BMS,if i can repair a "power station"
18:25:55 <Kuschelpony> aaah copepr acetate, mine is a deep moss green but the crystals turned out to be more like a felt of tangled needles
18:25:59 <Nothing\> i have a jar of sodium acetate, too I forgot about. I like to microwave it every so often and let it cool to room temp and give it a good shock to make it freeze instantly
18:26:13 <Nothing\> but man, it was hard making an appreciable amount of sodium acetate from vinegar
18:26:34 <Nothing\> a gallon of vinegar barely got me 200ml of sodium acetate
18:27:04 <Kuschelpony> another beautiful experiment is to melt citric acid (not overhetaing where it decomposes) and let it crystallize, watching between polarizing filters, you get an amazing colorful display
18:27:17 <Kuschelpony> vinegar ist veeery diluted
18:27:46 <Nothing\> Kuschelpony, that's interesting. I don't think my bag of smaller crystals is very "Needly" and mine wasn't even purified. It had some white insoluble preciptate I didn't bother filtering and just crystalized the whole lot.
18:28:02 <Nothing\> Kuschelpony, heh I've noticed. I'd love to get my hands on glacial
18:28:27 <Nothing\> how useful is it to add peroxide to vinegar when making such compounds?
18:28:37 <Kuschelpony> looks like you should try to distill acetic acid
18:29:04 <Nothing\> yeah the BPs are like 10c apart aren't they
18:29:10 <Kuschelpony> no idea, peroxide is banned here so i didanything without, just occassionaly bubbling air through the glass to add more oxygen
18:29:42 <Nothing\> ah they're 18c apart
18:29:49 <Nothing\> that's a decent spread
18:30:09 <Kuschelpony> i have not yet tried, but i see it possible to make a kind of fractional distillation, with a long tube filled with something porous, where the lighter boiling stuff enriches upward and the higher boiling stuff concentrates flowing backwards
18:30:15 <Nothing\> i always read about methods like "cold distillation" but that never worked for me
18:31:02 <Nothing\> yeah i haven't got a distillation set up, even a janky one. I've gotta figure something out at some point
18:31:31 <Nothing\> lol i tried boiling off the propylene glycol from a vial of red food coloring so I could be left with the crystals
18:32:08 <Nothing\> I didn't realize how quickly like 2ml of liquid would boil under a flame and all the red dye shot out the top and got on absolutely everything in my lab area
18:32:13 <Nothing\> even the ceiling lol
18:32:23 <Nothing\> looked like somebody's head exploded
18:32:40 <Nothing\> like they had a sneeze from hell
18:32:56 <Kuschelpony> my life is currently too depressed and exhausted to build anything for serious chemistry, im focussing to get a solar power camping setup andsome CRT projects
18:33:00 <Kuschelpony> hihi
18:33:39 <Nothing\> Kuschelpony, i understand, I've been very depressed lately as well. Like everything is like slogging through waist deep snow
18:34:20 <Nothing\> i also have seasonal affective disorder, so that makes it worse during the winter
18:35:19 <Nothing\> that, and I'm having something of a midlife crisis coming to terms with all of the health problems that seemed to pop up as soon as I turned 40
18:35:29 <Kuschelpony> mine is more of a decline from year to year, from experiencing how "social" people make their circles tighter and tighter and exclude me from their RL meetups and activities
18:35:46 <Kuschelpony> and yes, im getting closer to 50
18:36:17 <Nothing\> and the notion that realistically, I'll be lucky to live another 20 years, and after the first 5 or 10 it's going to be agony. So, it might not even be that long if I have to olok into euthanasia
18:36:21 <Kuschelpony> not that <i> feel old, but its one of the arguments that the"active" generation sees me as alien
18:36:38 <Nothing\> Kuschelpony, it's interesting you say that
18:36:50 <Nothing\> just a semi-random question, but are you on the spectrum that you know of?
18:36:59 <Kuschelpony> im hard into
18:37:12 <Nothing\> because that's exactly how I described it to my doctor when I was diagnosed the other week
18:37:14 <Nothing\> like, autism
18:37:45 <Kuschelpony> yes, im hard into specific niches of autism, diagnosed almost 20 years ago
18:38:55 <Nothing\> it's weird, I asked my shrink about it and after some questions, we decided I was autistic. Then I meet with my methadone doctor 2 days later, whom I've only been seeing a few months. And when I told him about my new diagnosis, he told me he actually had notes in my file about me potentially being autistic that he was going to talk to me about that day
18:39:02 <Kuschelpony> looking back it was around my late 30s when i hadthe peak of "masking" and blending in, after that my final burnout happened from trying to keep up with the increasing demands of the people i wanted to be with
18:39:15 <Nothing\> so, that pretty much eliminated any doubts, besides the fact that it explains so much.
18:39:21 <Kuschelpony> yes
18:39:29 <Nothing\> Kuschelpony, but yeah that's how I described it
18:39:41 <Nothing\> like being an alien on a planet/society that wasn't meant for me
18:39:55 <Kuschelpony> thats the most common experience of autistics, yes
18:40:44 <Kuschelpony> i do havesome observations how this happens, how different NTs process social interactions
18:41:04 <Nothing\> it's weird because I sort of wondered about it years ago, but I figured "I have friends (at the time), I can be social (although blurt out completely inappropriate things without meaning to), things like that.
18:41:10 <Nothing\> I'd always find some way to brush it off
18:42:45 <Nothing\> but I started thinking about how I react to sensory input. Like if the texture of my skin is changed that is very literally distressing for me. Like, if my hands feel dusty, gritty, wet, slippery, or if there's a fold in my sock inside my shoe, or a fold in my blankets, or whatever. It bothers me so much more than it shoud.
18:43:08 <Nothing\> but all my life I never really thought anything of it. It was just how things were. I assumed everyone was like that.
18:43:30 <Nothing\> when I actually started thinking about it, I realized that's not that case at all and it's not normal
18:44:24 <Nothing\> like, to the point where I avoid bathing, brushing my teeth, washing my hands or doing the dishes because i can't stand the way it makes my skin feel. So many strong sensations that I find overwhelming to the point of distress.
18:44:35 <Kuschelpony> ah
18:44:57 <Nothing\> though I do force myself to bathe and brush my teeth and what not, but even after years, I've never gotten used to it
18:45:08 <Nothing\> which, you'd think I'd adapt sooner or later
18:45:09 <Kuschelpony> for me there is quite a opposite experience, my body screams for sensual experiences, physical interaction
18:45:33 <Nothing\> of any sort? Or does it have to be novel/new?
18:45:46 <Kuschelpony> almost any sort
18:45:56 <Nothing\> because I find a do crave a lot of novel experiences, but that could just be my depression
18:46:19 <Nothing\> they say novelty is one thing that helps depression. Having new experiences, even if in a minor way.
18:46:23 <Kuschelpony> thats too, but for me its not justfor "novel" but more widely for specific sensoryinput
18:46:31 <Kuschelpony> and yes i fully agree
18:46:41 <Nothing\> i get it, it's a utilitarian type deal
18:46:48 <Nothing\> but not entirely, i'm sure
18:47:23 <Kuschelpony> but i have to say, i consider my depression to be a secondary issue, that happens as a consequence of my primary issue of burnout from trying to be accepted in social groups
18:47:53 <Nothing\> same, mine is largely environmental, I think. Which is part of why I won't take meds for it.
18:48:03 <Nothing\> no magic pill will fix my life
18:48:51 <Kuschelpony> i tried medications against depression, but they made me feel duller on average
18:49:33 <Nothing\> i took them when i was a teenager and they only made me try to kill myself. Which is apparently a side effect, especially in teenagers.
18:49:53 <Nothing\> After that, I decided they just made things worse
18:50:06 <Kuschelpony> in retrospective i think they would have been good for people who have a kind of depression where they have dangerously negative spikes, but not for people who have a burnout
18:50:11 <Kuschelpony> ouch
18:50:43 <Kuschelpony> nah i have a brain that really doesnt want to kill me, its literally the other way that my dreams and passions are what lets me go on
18:51:58 <Nothing\> yeah i agree, for someone where the depression is actually clinical and there's little to no environmental reason for it, I think medication MIGHT be helpful. But, I've been finding more and more studies suggesting that the whole idea of depression being caused by "chemical imbalance" and that SSRIs and the like will fix this balance isn't how it actually works. But, it makes the drug companies money, so they're in no hurry to rectify the issue.
18:53:11 <Kuschelpony> here in germany things are a bit different, here its not the money driving it but the social demand that people "fit in" and are not visible disturbing "needy"
18:53:36 <Nothing\> ah, keeping out the riff raff
18:53:45 <Nothing\> or at least sweeping them under the rug
18:54:12 <Nothing\> i think a lot of places have resorted to that
18:54:27 <Nothing\> anyways i've gotta go hunt down some food
18:54:54 <Nothing\> it's been nice talking, as always. Take care of yourself. <3
18:56:12 <Kuschelpony> thanks
