20:18:15 <MrMobodies> The old boiler in this house was installed in 2007, in 2011 the new previous occupants moved it and wired it wrong and it stayed on all the time until we discovered it in 2020

20:18:15 <MrMobodies> they done no maintenance of nothing to it and it was condemned when we got a gas engineer to service it. They fitted the wrong flue and didn't seal it but it was sorted out.

20:18:16 <coppice> Be very careful who you get heat pumps from. Their lifetimes vary enormously.

20:18:16 <coppice> Does Bosch have a history as a heat pump maker? I don't think they even make the heat pumps for their own fridges
20:18:16 <arch> company goes bankrupt and your warranty is about as good as the zimbabwean dollar

20:18:16 <coppice> It really might not be Bosch's fault. If you install a heat pump poorly, they can suffer high stress, and wear out quickly. There aren't many people in the UK with good expertise in heat pump installations.

20:18:16 <MrMobodies> so after he replaced them and did some alternations he said it was fine after that

20:18:16 <coppice> ground source is a bit of a crap shoot. If you are in a location where their is lots of fluidity around the bore hole the heat can be replaced quite quickly. If you are in a place with little underground flow you can freeze the bore hole in a few years, and need to bore in another spot
20:18:16 <coppice> for air sourced ones, location is often a big issue. People want them out of the way, but that can put them in spots where they recirculate the air a lot. The results in freezing up, low efficiency, more noise and a short life
20:18:16 <MrMobodies> seems like it could be more trouble than what it is worth
20:18:16 <MrMobodies> there was this documentary last year about the noises from them where the neighbours were complaining
20:18:16 <MrMobodies> it was keeping them awake and it didn't reach enough decibles for the council to do anything
20:18:16 <coppice> they can be fairly low noise, but if they get noisy it can be really troublesome sorting them out.
20:18:16 <coppice> There is so much BS about their wonderful use in Japan. Actually most Japanese home don't have good heating. Its weird for an affluent country
20:18:16 <coppice> 90% of Japanese homes have at least one air con for summer cooling. Not so many have heat+cool ones

20:18:16 <MrMobodies> a gas stove installed in 2020 from a wood burner (chimney lining installed backwards and turbo fan removed after 2010)

20:18:16 <MrMobodies> and a lot of cowboy works that come with it most from 2010 onwards
20:18:16 <coppice> Interestingly, if you look at the countries with lots of heat pumps for cooling home, like Saudi or Malaysia, they have moved heavily to domestic 3 phase power during the same period the heat pumps have grown. its not to power 3 phase motors, as most modern heat pumps use VFD motors. I'm not clear why
