00:53:00 <linying> :)))
00:53:00 <linying> Good morning babee! :)
00:54:00 <linying> Long time no see... how is ya Jane?
00:56:00 <babee> hi....ok
00:56:00 <babee> urself?
00:56:00 <babee> u went on strike?
00:57:00 <linying> Nope... :)
00:58:00 <linying> Went to work at 6am and avoided conflict at the picket lines. Too early in the morning for union ppl's...
00:59:00 <babee> i thought there was supposed to be a picket line
00:59:00 <babee> but there wasn't anyone
00:59:00 <babee> and they were pretty friendly
00:59:00 <babee> plus all my lects turned up
01:01:00 <linying> There was at Gippsland... some of my students complained about the agressiveness of some picketers... :(((
01:02:00 <linying> Only one academic turned up.. and I spent most of the day supervising final year students doing thesis project work.
01:02:00 <babee> so aren't u in the union?
01:03:00 <linying> Nope.. never have been and never will be!
01:04:00 <linying> I don't believe that it was an appropriate issue to go on strike about, and the timing, week 12, and just before exams shows just how narrow minded the union organisers are.
01:05:00 <babee> well maybe they were tryin to maximise the effect?
01:06:00 <linying> Yeah... pretty poor way of doing it. Many of my students are full fee paying Internationals...
01:06:00 <babee> but its definately disruptive no doubt
01:08:00 <babee> is tarni a female name?
01:08:00 <babee> yeah well they had a reason and also the funding thing..its not good for students either
01:08:00 <linying> ...er, could be... pretty unusual one if it is!
01:08:00 <babee> they want us to pay full fee too...sooner or later
01:09:00 <linying> No... it's not...
01:09:00 <babee> ah..well tryin to apply for a job atm..the the HR person is call tarni..so i duno how i should address the cover letter
01:09:00 <babee> i need to knwo if she's a miss or mr
01:09:00 <linying> Well, that's the way it used to be... the it was made "free".. then the Labour Party brought back fees... but ppl's forget all that.
01:10:00 <linying> ....mmmmmm... now that's tricky!
01:10:00 <babee> yeah..i casn't say 'dear tarni hoffman' or somethink
01:11:00 <linying> Ms covers the Miss/Mrs thing... but not good if it turns out to be a Mr
01:11:00 <babee> yeah exactly...10 odd yrs ago i think u only need to pay about 80 bucks for a degree
01:11:00 <linying> Yeah... that'd be safe.
01:11:00 <babee> ah..wouldn't it sound a bit dumb if i say 'dear tarni hoffman'?
01:11:00 <linying> ....plus student union fees. They were compulsory.
01:12:00 <linying> Nope... have no choice!
01:12:00 <babee> well compared to what we pay now..which is like 15000 k min
01:13:00 <babee> sorry 15k
01:14:00 <linying> Yeah... it's not good. Unfortunately... too much of the money is used for "administrative purposes" and has nothing to do with teaching.
01:15:00 <babee> exactly and everyone's already broke enuff as a student
01:15:00 <babee> and now we have to work like 1-3 jobs while full time studying
01:16:00 <linying> Yeah... and I have a lot of sympathy for students doing it tough like that too. I also keep thinking about the AUD$80 million spent on the South African campus... for just 75 students...
01:17:00 <babee> hahahahahaha its a joke
01:17:00 <babee> the funni thing is i'm paying 1200 bucks per subject atm
01:17:00 <babee> and they wont even give me the learning guides
01:17:00 <linying> ...and the AUD$900K spent last year by Clayton staff to go on a 2 week junket to see the place...
01:17:00 <babee> which is like essential to the subject
01:17:00 <babee> i have to pay 20 bucks each just to get a copy
01:18:00 <babee> meanwhile...undergrads get it for free
01:18:00 <babee> and they pay about 700 bucks a subject
01:18:00 <babee> its a big fat joke
01:18:00 <babee> well few wks ago the new head of school shoved all the law staff into a weekend 'retreat'
01:18:00 <linying> ...at whose expense....?
01:18:00 <babee> then when they came back 20+ electives r gone
01:19:00 <linying> Wow... a lot of electives! Not enough students taking them up for them to be viable?
01:20:00 <babee> well no our head seems to be the conservative and commercial lawyer type
01:20:00 <babee> he cut off all the ones he seemed to think r non-commercial
01:20:00 <babee> plus plenty of new rules introduced
01:21:00 <linying> ...mmmmmm... well, given that he's probably being paid around AUD$3200k/year... he can make these decisions...
01:21:00 <linying> ...200K that is...!
01:22:00 <babee> yeah he can..obviously not everyone's happi
01:22:00 <babee> and the funni thing is..UQ is meant to be so 'prestigious'
01:22:00 <babee> yet QUT and griffith now offers more electives than we do
01:22:00 <linying> No... but at least you have a Head who can make decisions... our last one couldn't even decide what day it was!!!!!
01:23:00 * kali has left IRC
01:23:00 <babee> i know but he makes decisions not thinkin about the students
01:24:00 <linying> If forced to actally make a decision, would then convene a committee to lok into it and come up with solutions... so that he would be distanced from the outcome of decions made!
01:25:00 <linying> Unfortunately.. in the commercial competiveness of tertiary education these days... students are simple a number being sold a product in and education factory.
01:26:00 <babee> yeah thats what the union is sort of saying
01:26:00 <babee> i think its a chain reaction
01:26:00 <babee> and i'm disgusted at the full fee paying thing
01:27:00 <linying> I find it very hard 'cos I was brought up in a CAE (College of Advanced Education) environment where the interests of students was paramount as they were the reason why the rest of us were there!
01:29:00 <babee> is that sorta like tafe or somethink?
01:29:00 <linying> We always tried to encourage students as word-of-mouth advertising was better than any media based advertising, made the workplace much more relaxing and students did better. The trend these days is to ignore students and do things that "fit the criteria" of the course.
01:30:00 <babee> they're just bloodyminded
01:30:00 <linying> Non-University institution... I don't htink there are any left now as they had to merge with Universities of have their funding cut.
01:30:00 <babee> i think its gonna get worse and worse
01:30:00 <babee> ppl with about 150k can get in regardless of grades
01:30:00 <babee> even to courses like MBBS and dentistry
01:30:00 <babee> u got that money u can get in
01:33:00 <linying> I gotta go now... take care.... and great to hear from you again! {{HUGS}}
