00:39:41 <K> ah they let you keep your old plates?
00:39:46 <Ampera> no
00:39:51 <Ampera> uh
00:39:55 <Ampera> sorry misunderstood
00:40:02 <K> like the pieces of metal
00:40:02 <Ampera> we get issued a front/rear, you only need to surrender one of them
00:40:11 <K> i see.
00:40:14 <Ampera> I do not get to keep my old plates on my car
00:40:23 <K> can you transfer ?
00:40:24 <Ampera> the remaining one is just something I can keep if I want to
00:40:26 <Ampera> no
00:40:34 <Ampera> registration can be transferred between cars, not people
00:40:34 <K> i think i can be done here
00:40:49 <Ampera> so if my dad transferred it to a different car that'd work, but he can't transfer his registration to me
00:40:58 <K> i see.
00:54:50 <watcher> Here you plate will all ways keep to the car and you can change the name of the car onwer. the only way you can get new licenses plate if is yourre plates are stolen but you get a small number added to the plates.
00:55:11 <watcher> or you export the car and then import it back again.
00:55:47 <watcher> Maybe if you sell your car to the royal family it will yet a new license plate.
00:57:53 <Ampera> Here plates have absolutely nothing to do with who owns the car.
00:58:09 <Ampera> The person who owns the car does not have to be the person who registers it, and vice-versa.
00:58:37 <Ampera> I own the car, my dad registered it. He is surrendering his registration, and I am registering it in my name, and therefore will get my own plates.
00:58:43 <Ampera> the car never changed ownership/hands

01:10:01 <Ampera> I love it
01:10:02 <K> haha
01:10:11 <K> i wonder what happens when that breaks
01:12:49 <DHess_US> Throw it away, and buy a new one.
01:15:14 <coppice> we've all seen cars in quiet lanes doing that
01:27:16 <MrMobodies> Hello
01:27:31 <watcher> Hello MrMobodies
01:28:28 <MrMobodies> someone got this cleaner to look at, they said it intermittently works. Took one look at the cord and worn. Plugged an sockt tester and the lights go on and off on cable movement
01:28:38 <MrMobodies> It has a socket on the left
01:28:43 <MrMobodies> https://i.imgur.com/E0teTzw.png
01:28:51 <MrMobodies> I opened it
01:28:52 <MrMobodies> https://i.imgur.com/FEnXWOf.png
01:29:08 <MrMobodies> Could I get away with using Wago strips when I put the new cord in?
01:29:18 <MrMobodies> instead of crimping it with those blade terminals
01:29:46 <Ampera> imo one crimp > wago+existing crimp
01:29:47 <MrMobodies> if I cut the cable before the crimp
01:30:00 <Ampera> especially with mains you want the fewest connections (especially mechanical) connections reasonable.
01:30:18 <Ampera> Even with existing strain relief, it's just better to have real spade connectors
01:30:26 <Ampera> at least that's the doctrine that's been told to me, ymmv
01:30:32 <MrMobodies> Looks like I an going to have to order a decent set
01:30:42 <MrMobodies> of blade terminals
01:30:53 <MrMobodies> I don't trust the ones I have
01:31:02 <Ampera> if it's you just need to bodge it and have it done now, then sure wago
01:31:08 <MrMobodies> I think it is rated at 1200w
01:31:16 <Ampera> the vacuum cleaner?
01:31:30 <MrMobodies> if she wants it back quick then I could do that temporarily
01:31:31 <MrMobodies> yes
01:31:36 <MrMobodies> an industrial one for like
01:31:39 <MrMobodies> sucking up plaster
01:31:47 <MrMobodies> for decrators
01:31:52 <MrMobodies> *decorators
01:32:08 <Ampera> imo I'd do it right still. 5A-ish isn't loads, and it'd probably be fine
01:32:26 <Ampera> What's wrong with the cable though?
01:32:34 <MrMobodies> Festool Cleantec ct15e
01:32:39 <Ampera> is it simply that the cable is worn beyond any use?
01:32:51 <MrMobodies> yes
01:32:55 <Ampera> right
01:33:08 <MrMobodies> so I plugged a live neutral and eart plug (led lit) on the plug on the unit
01:33:22 <Ampera> Those spade connectors are common enough that having the stuff to do it on hand is useful for repair, imo
01:33:22 <MrMobodies> and when you move the cable the lights go on and off
01:33:39 <MrMobodies> and cable just looks really twisted
01:34:08 <MrMobodies> I do have some spade connectors and terminals I might give it a go, test it and get my temperature gun out
01:34:16 <MrMobodies> so if it is loose then itd heat up and I'd know
01:34:39 <Ampera> Do not follow my subsequent advice, because I do not know what I am doing, BUT
01:35:16 <Ampera> what I've done in cases like this, at least with molex-type connectors (which are DC and lower voltage), is I just crimped it with a pair of pliers, and then dumped a bunch of solder over the connection for good measure.
01:35:32 <Ampera> this primarily works if your new cable is stranded, which is how they usually are
01:36:02 <Ampera> I'd almost be dempted to take a pair of pliers and gently pry up the original wires out of those spades, and just reuse them
01:36:04 <steve30> !coffee
01:36:04 * EEVBot pours coffee down steve30's throat
01:36:29 <Ampera> but as I said, there could be reasons I am unaware of why this would be a bad idea.
01:36:52 * Ampera pets steve30
01:36:54 <Ampera> <3
01:42:07 * watcher watch it and streams
01:42:54 <MrMobodies> parents are back from holiday just now
01:43:17 <MrMobodies> Ampera, that's a good idea.
01:43:48 <MrMobodies> back 2 decades ago, I use to find the molex connectors coming loose and the hard drives use to power down intermittently
01:44:09 <MrMobodies> but only seem to do it on the after market extenders
01:44:37 <MrMobodies> So I bent the connectors to make the really tight and they'd still come loose a year or so later
01:45:20 <MrMobodies> I suppose I could solder them in for safe measure and put an adhesive base/tie around the cable
01:45:29 <MrMobodies> with the blade terminal I mean
01:46:12 <Ampera> If you have good strain relief on the cord (which you must anyways) it's not a huge deal
01:46:55 <Ampera> soldering makes a better connection than mechanical and offers some mechanical stability of its own (though minor)
01:50:01 <MrMobodies> yes, especially with motor vibrations
01:50:23 <MrMobodies> I have some of that rubber cord somewhere on an extension at the local pub
01:50:50 <MrMobodies> One of them is on a wooden stand and the other loose
01:51:08 <MrMobodies> we use them for the disco lighting but they use to be under my desk in 2018
01:51:20 <MrMobodies> before I moved in late 2019
01:51:28 <MrMobodies> they are the 10 pdu sockets
01:51:54 <MrMobodies> I think they were 5m rubber cord cable pre fitted with a Permaplug
01:52:52 <MrMobodies> I do have some 16a cable here but it is just ordinary domestic cable and no flex and it will cause hinderance so not suitable

03:30:28 <rust_collector> hey!

03:34:17 <Nothing\> hey, what sort of scale would i get that would record the peak weight automatically.
03:34:55 <Nothing\> i want to be able to press down on an object and measure the maximum force/weight applied before it gives, or to measure the weight necessary to compress a material.
03:35:37 <Nothing\> so I figure, just push on it with a scale that will record the peak. But most scales are meant for static loads, so they don't need that functionality. So, I'm not sure what I should be looking for.
03:35:43 <rust_collector> make it a project, and use a load cell and one of your arduinos, then just look up the highest value and have it print that?
03:35:54 <Nothing\> rust_collector, i totally could
03:36:03 <Nothing\> i have a load cell i'm doing nothing with, and some arduinos
03:36:06 <Nothing\> and a brain
03:36:07 <Nothing\> lol
03:36:24 <Nothing\> at least, that's what they tell me. I've never seen the dang thing.
03:36:46 <Nothing\> just once i'd like to see my own brain with my own eyes
03:37:18 <Nothing\> but yeah, that's a good idea. There's probably already code for it and everything.
03:37:24 <rust_collector> I dont believe you have a brain
03:37:30 <Nothing\> I just feel like a commercial product would be more accurate
03:37:49 <Nothing\> having a brain is probably the strangest experience in the world
03:38:03 <rust_collector> video, or it does not exist
03:38:14 <Nothing\> i'd prefer to have a series of ganglia spread throughout my body.
03:38:24 <Nothing\> lol i forgot about pics or it didn't happen
03:38:56 <Nothing\> lately i've been trying to bring back the old troll on youtube comments by posting on every video, regardless of content "fake, you can tell by the pixels"
03:38:57 <rust_collector> I think you would get it pretty accurate. you can also start with cheap little kitchen scale, maybe, to get the mechanical bits
03:39:43 <electrohead> Nothing\: just build up a wheatstone bridge circuit?
03:40:12 <Nothing\> electrohead, lol i never did figure out the math of those
03:40:26 <electrohead> it's not hard, whatsoever
03:40:29 <electrohead> !twss
03:40:30 <EEVBot> That's what she said!
03:40:43 <Nothing\> back when i started learning about electronics that was one of the things i meant to learn how to do, but they've got calculators to do that for you so i'd just forget it within a week anyways
03:41:07 <Nothing\> electrohead, lol yeah i imagine it's not. It's just one of those things i've always meant to look up, but for some reason haven't.
03:41:36 <remote> they most likely have calculators on line for https://www.grc.nasa.gov/www/k-12/airplane/tunwheat.html too
03:41:36 <EEVBot> [url] Wheatstone Bridge Circuit | www.grc.nasa.gov
03:41:53 <Nothing\> remote, nasa's site pisses me off
03:41:58 <Nothing\> lol
03:41:59 <remote> lol
03:42:04 <remote> it was just first on search
03:42:09 <Nothing\> i can't find any good picture galleries on there
03:42:45 <remote> https://www.allaboutcircuits.com/tools/wheatstone-bridge-calculator/
03:42:46 <EEVBot> [url] Wheatstone Bridge Calculator - Engineering Calculators & Tools | www.allaboutcircuits.com
03:42:50 <Nothing\> i was trying to find galleries of high res space images from telescopes, hubble, or any of those probes they have around the outer planets, so I figure nasa's gallery would be perfect
03:42:56 <remote> um like second or third?
03:43:03 <electrohead> https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F423f9433-ac7c-4966-b57b-3aa7dc25fd2f_930x718.png
03:43:39 <Nothing\> their gallery is pictures of everything BUT space, people working at a desk, people building something, people speaking at a lecturn. Not exactly what you expect from a NASA photo gallery.
03:44:19 <Nothing\> but yeah actually nasa has really good academic resources, being more serious
03:46:06 <Nothing\> i'm contemplating working towards buying every final fantasy game in the main series, aside from X and X-2.
03:46:32 <Nothing\> not too keen on the newer ones though
03:47:21 <Nothing\> ah the fruitless pursuit of happiness through material goods
03:48:39 <Nothing\> heh i was gonna get a heavy bag to let out my frustrations on, but after finding it was $400 with the stand, I gave up on the idea.
03:48:56 <Nothing\> then i found yesterday, just beating the crap out of a cushion with a big stick works just as well
03:49:17 <Nothing\> incredible workout, too. I was actually euphoric afterwards.
03:50:06 <Nothing\> you know, they probably have libraries for load cells for arduino already made
03:50:30 <rust_collector> try digging rectangular holes in the front lawn, that is also a good workout, and lets you get out some...stuff
03:50:33 <rust_collector> yeah, they do
03:50:34 <Nothing\> i think logistically, the hardest part will just be how to physically build it
03:50:44 <rust_collector> probably not at all
03:51:05 <Nothing\> rust_collector, lol i've actually always wanted to do that. But, never owned my own land to do it with.
03:51:31 <rust_collector> should be fine, just put the dirt back, and plant your pentagram
03:51:33 <Nothing\> collectively moving several tons of dirt would be an amazing workout
03:51:43 <rust_collector> it is
03:51:44 <Nothing\> lol
03:51:54 <Nothing\> maybe i could get a job as a grave-digger
03:52:07 <rust_collector> that was one of my best jobs
03:52:19 <Nothing\> oh you actually did it?
03:52:32 <rust_collector> for about a year
03:52:53 <Nothing\> do they actually still just use a shovel? I'd imagine an excavator would desecrate every other grave nearby, so gotta do it by hand.
03:53:08 <Nothing\> But at the same time, you would expect they'd use some technology to speed it up
03:53:35 <Nothing\> and any time you see grave-diggers in popular culture, they're always just using a shovel
03:53:40 <rust_collector> nah, they had a mini-mini excavator, but most of the time, it was faster to just shovel it out. it was mostly sand there
03:53:50 <Nothing\> ah, like a cat
03:53:57 <Nothing\> that makes sense
03:54:18 <Nothing\> property management here uses similar machines for snow removal and general upkeep
03:54:43 <rust_collector> this one was stupid small. I think it was 900kg.
03:54:53 <Nothing\> not for actual digging, but similar things with different attachments
03:55:03 <Nothing\> oh wow
03:55:27 <Nothing\> i was going to say with the size, they would work on making electric cats like that
03:55:39 <rust_collector> electric cats....
03:55:40 <Nothing\> but i don't think an electric motor could produce that much torque to do the heavy lifting
03:55:48 <Nothing\> i imagine they have a pretty skookum engine
03:55:57 <rust_collector> they do make electric excavators
03:56:10 <Nothing\> rust_collector, i like to troll people by saying we need to develop electric rockets lol
03:56:21 <rust_collector> you are not wrong about that
03:56:39 <Nothing\> not electric spacecraft, we already have those, but actual electric rockets, or launch vehicles
03:56:44 <Nothing\> but preferably rockets
03:56:54 <rust_collector> electric motors are much much better at making torque than most other motors
03:57:05 <Nothing\> i mean, technically with enough power and power density, it would be possible
03:57:47 <rust_collector> waif is playing vanilla ice in the living room. it will either be a very short or a very long friday
03:57:54 <Nothing\> use an extreme version of one of those ionic lifters that creates airflow and lift by ionizing air. But they're so flimsy they can barely lift themselves, nevermind a power source and passengers.
03:58:08 <Nothing\> ouch
03:58:17 <Nothing\> that would drive me insane
03:58:26 <rust_collector> I like vanilla ice, lol
03:58:41 <Nothing\> lol my house is so quiet. I could hear my cat breathing from the next room over this morning in the bathroom
03:58:54 <rust_collector> it is fine, until she starts with that stupid country shit
03:58:58 <Nothing\> the loudest thing is my computer fan most of the time
03:59:10 <Nothing\> oh, you hate country, too?
03:59:25 <rust_collector> yep, country and reggae.
03:59:50 <Nothing\> i enjoy reggae if the mood strikes me, and if it's an actual reggae band speaking the jamaican creole
03:59:58 <Nothing\> real reggae is amazing
04:00:01 <rust_collector> nah, it is all horrible
04:01:30 <Nothing\> lol to each their own
04:01:43 <rust_collector> as long as it is not reggae and country, sure
04:01:50 <Nothing\> i'm open to most music, aside from country, and what I call the black arts
04:02:06 <rust_collector> reggae is black art
04:02:23 <Nothing\> which is basically any black music, r&b, hip hop, rap, that sorta thing. Which makes it ironic that I like Reggae but it's in a class of its own compared to those other genres.
04:02:38 <Nothing\> lol rust_collector i love that you knew exactly what i meant
04:02:58 <Nothing\> i dunno, it just all sounds the same to me
04:03:01 <Nothing\> and it's not music
04:03:06 <Nothing\> it's rhythmic talking
04:03:43 <rust_collector> mom used to be with a jamaican guitarist. I have heard enough. But I can enjoy some of the other rap and such stuff
04:03:44 <Nothing\> and most of it's about stupid shit anyways, gangs, bitches, drugs, money, bling
04:03:50 <Nothing\> which actually, country is the same
04:03:56 <Nothing\> always about the same things
04:04:14 <Nothing\> beer, women, trucks
04:04:23 <Nothing\> *women breaking their hearts
04:04:26 <rust_collector> yes, pickups drunk driving, and falling off bridges in your pickup
04:04:57 <rust_collector> I do not mind pickups, but the rest is not my thing
04:05:05 <Nothing\> I like traditional Indian music
04:05:19 <Nothing\> it's nice because it doesn't get stuck in my head
04:05:22 <rust_collector> there is so many kinds of that
04:05:28 <Nothing\> lol yeah there are
04:05:35 <Nothing\> something like Ravi Shankar

04:06:52 <Nothing\> we had snow on the ground for about 2 weeks
04:06:56 <Nothing\> heya Kuschelpony how's it going?
04:07:18 <Nothing\> ah gotta help with lunch sorry to dash
04:07:18 <rust_collector> not here either. it is like -6, and ice everywhere
04:07:21 <Nothing\> take care guys!
04:07:33 <Nothing\> thanks for the suggestion re: wheatstone bridge and load cell
04:07:54 <rust_collector> have fun, but only one
04:08:51 <Ampera> hey rust_collector
04:08:54 <Ampera> how are you doing
04:09:06 <Kuschelpony> hello Nothing
04:09:06 <Kuschelpony> currently sick, so not much brain capacity
04:09:54 <rust_collector> hola. today is pretty good. now waif has replaced vanilla ice with gunther
04:10:10 <Ampera> lol
04:10:32 <Ampera> rust_collector, what's your opinion on the ratcheting box wrench thingies that are so popular with the youngins these days?
04:10:33 <Kuschelpony> waiting foe the test result in 10 minutes
04:10:44 <Ampera> I bought a cheap set on sale from the harbor of freight the other day
04:10:52 <Ampera> (mostly because I happened to be there)
04:13:07 <rust_collector> well, other than quality issues, they can be very handy. they are usually a bit thicker, around the box end, so getting them into places can be tricky. Then you have some which you flip over, to go the other way, and some have the little lever, like most regular ratchets, which can be very nice, if you end up wedged up against something, and the bolt or whatever locks you into place.
04:13:22 <rust_collector> but, some times, they are great

04:26:49 <arch> if i want to weld inside my wood frame garage, are there any precautions i should take? maybe add sheet metal as the siding instead of wall paneling?
04:27:22 <rust_collector> you can, or that... uhm, sheets of gypsum...things
04:27:35 <arch> drywall?
04:27:53 <rust_collector> I guess that is the word.

04:28:45 <remote> if cash allows https://www.amazon.com/Westward-22RP05-Welding-Booth-0-014/dp/B07YVSR56V type of items
04:28:45 <EEVBot> [url] Amazon.com | www.amazon.com
04:28:46 <rust_collector> but, my garage is wood, and I never burnt it down much
04:30:29 <Kuschelpony> positive news: the test was negative
04:30:38 <rust_collector> for what?
04:31:27 <remote> or just buy the rolling panel type arch so you can pull it out only when needed
04:31:59 <rust_collector> or, just dont worry about it, and just avoid welding your walls
04:32:40 <arch> ok
04:33:03 <Kuschelpony> for the C
04:33:03 <rust_collector> but, avoid welding as the last thing in the evening, before you go inside
04:33:47 <rust_collector> these days, I am not sure what c they mean.
04:37:48 <Kuschelpony> Covid
04:39:17 <rust_collector> ah, ok, that is probably better than the other c, even if I am pretty positive to covid
