04:11:52 <rust5> whoa, that is very something.
04:12:05 <Nothing\> weird, there's a little red X in the LOWER right corner of hexchat. Just below the nicklist. I thought it might close this grey bar next to it that has nothing in it. But it just closed hexchat all together.
04:13:43 <Kuschelpony> welcome back
04:20:52 <Nothing\> heya Kuschelpony and danke
04:21:23 <Nothing\> wie geht es inen? probably spelled that wrong but it's better than my pronunciation according to my mum
04:21:54 <Nothing\> i have a bad habit of pronouncing glottal stops, like an ACH sound more like ACK
04:22:22 <rust5> it is a thing for engrish speakers, I think
04:22:41 <Nothing\> kind of a lazy way of doing it i guess. But I suppose that's no different from how Germans (at least that I've known) pronounce TH as just T. Presumably because there is no equivalent of a TH sound in German.
04:22:57 <Nothing\> actually it's not a very common sound in a lot of languages
04:23:20 <Nothing\> i've come to realize that's probably why most secondary english speakers pronounce th as t
04:23:51 <rust5> it is a weird sound to make, imo
04:24:00 <Nothing\> i remember telling my old polish landlord once about a friend of mine named chloe. he absolutely couldn't wrap his mind around how to pronounce the name. It kinda threw me for a loop.
04:24:36 <Nothing\> it seems like a reasonable name to pronounce. I even spelled it out for him and tried to explain the pronounciation but it just wasn't happening.
04:26:09 <rust5> but, otoh, if he made you try to pronounce Zdzblo.....
04:28:17 <Nothing\> rust5, try pronouncing thlree
04:28:24 <Nothing\> like three but with an L in there
04:28:27 <Nothing\> it's a mouthfull
04:28:58 <rust5> and, is that a word?
04:29:06 <Nothing\> not in the slightest
04:29:10 <rust5> good
04:29:12 <Nothing\> lol
04:29:29 <rust5> also polish: Nastepstw
04:29:33 <rust5> and it is a word
04:29:40 <Nothing\> rusty's wife: "STOP SAYING THLREE SO MUCH IN THERE!"
04:29:54 <Nothing\> lol i don't even try pronouncing polish words
04:29:59 <rust5> she does get pissy about that
04:30:01 <Nothing\> i know i'm just gonna butcher it
04:30:19 <rust5> the pstw ending seems interesting
04:30:32 <Nothing\> oh yeah or gaelic words
04:30:36 <rust5> no
04:30:40 <Nothing\> there's another i don't even try
04:30:49 <rust5> that is just wrong
04:31:21 <Nothing\> you get a name like bob and it's pronounced oswald son of william of essex or something
04:32:04 <Nothing\> actually i read the other day that the original middle english word for knight was actually pronounced k-nig-it
04:32:14 <Nothing\> or kin-icht
04:32:33 <Nothing\> something like that. And the spelling went on to be syllabic
04:32:51 <Nothing\> it's funny because it reminds me of monty python
04:32:58 <rust5> mmhmm
04:33:08 <Nothing\> i can't hear the word k-nig-it and and not think monty python
04:33:40 <Nothing\> okay i've got some loaded potato skins with sour cream and chives to devour for lunchfast
04:33:58 <Nothing\> that is, it's at lunch time but it's my breakfast
04:34:21 <rust5> 18.35 here, and still no breakfast....
04:34:27 <Nothing\> heh
04:34:45 <Nothing\> i also need to find out what naproxen's soluble in. I need to do some tests to figure out what exactly makes it so irritating
04:34:58 <rust5> gasoline
04:34:59 <Nothing\> plus i'm suspicious from its chemical structure that it may be fluorescent
04:35:05 <Nothing\> rust5, it probably would actually
04:35:30 <rust5> there you go
04:36:15 <rust5> I wonder if there is a czech "ebay" sort of site....
04:36:28 <rust5> well, there has to be

05:23:20 <Nothing\> dang it
05:23:36 <Nothing\> my tv stand is just 4in too small for my new tv so i've gotta get a new one before my tv gets here
05:24:01 <Nothing\> i had to rearrange my living room to make room for it too. The thing's a beast from the dimensions.
05:24:14 <rust5> no, it is a large tv
05:24:26 <Nothing\> very large :D
05:24:35 <rust5> no, just too large
05:24:48 <Nothing\> lol i remember back in the day when having a big screen tv was a status symbol. And they were usually like 40in
05:25:07 <rust5> and that is about what a tv should be
05:25:44 <Nothing\> i forget the size of the tv my family had. But my dad owned a furniture business so we basically got whatever we wanted. It was maybe 40in but holy crap it was huge as a CRT.
05:26:29 <rust5> I do remember a 66" sony (I think it was) it was very close to 200kg
05:26:55 <Nothing\> it's sad though, it had picture in a picture, split screen where you could have a channel on each half of the TV or a feature where it would divide the screen into 9 boxes that each had their own channel. It was a useless feature back then because what good is a channel with no sound. But even the half and half function would be so useful today with computers
05:26:59 <Nothing\> or the picture in a picture
05:27:27 <Nothing\> not so much the display of 9 different channels. I think they just saw back to the future 2 and thought "hey that looks cool. Let's do that"
05:27:31 <rust5> or, just use a damn computer screen
05:27:45 <Nothing\> why? they're half the size and twice the cost
05:27:50 <Nothing\> and half the functionality
05:27:55 <rust5> good
05:28:17 <Nothing\> a 4k tv with 10 bit color works just fine for a computer
05:28:39 <rust5> I do not want 7/8 of the functionality of a tv. I want it to show a picture, and that is it
05:28:44 <Nothing\> i know in the past, color gamut was an issue but if your tv supports the same color gamut as a computer monitor i'm not sure what i'm missing out on
05:28:56 <Nothing\> and if i am missing out on anything i'm blissfully unaware
05:30:41 <Nothing\> rust5, that's the beauty of humanity. Everybody's unique. We all have our own specific preferences, likes, dislikes, fears, desires etc. What's meaningless to one person could be another person's entire livelihood. Or a song that gives one person goosebumps might make another one wretch with disgust.
05:30:57 <rust5> yep
05:31:22 <Nothing\> one just has to be careful because it's easy to apply the fallacy that everything you like/feel/experience is the same as what everybody else does. And you don't even tend to realize when you do it.
05:31:50 <rust5> well, that is just because the "everyone else" thinks is wrong
05:31:51 <Nothing\> one has to be incredibly vigilant almost 24/7 to avoid it it's so deeply engrained in our minds. Whether by society or by biology... I'm not sure which.
05:32:03 <Nothing\> rust5, in most cases they are
05:32:50 <Nothing\> lol i was telling my mum today that i don't believe in true romantic love because i've yet to see any example of it in my almost 38 years. She asked me how I became so cynical. I told her I'm not cynical, I'm realistic.
05:33:22 <Nothing\> but i mean, one's opinion on love depends largely on their marital/relationship status i find. And how long that status has been so for.
05:33:33 <rust5> heh, ok
05:33:51 <Nothing\> ie somebody in a new relationship is likely to defend to the death the idea that romantic love exists and is beautiful etc etc because that's what they think they're experiencing
05:34:30 <Nothing\> whereas somebody like you who's been in a romantic relationship for quite a while would have a more down to earth view of it (presumably) while still believing in it (I should hope!)
05:34:40 <rust5> well, do you think that is true, if the person is 63, and just started its 4th marriage?
05:35:04 <Nothing\> but please correct me if my presumption is wrong. I'd hate to make any presumption but i figured this was a safe one to make.
05:35:27 <Nothing\> rust5, that's true. I guess age does have a lot to do with it now that I think of it.
05:35:41 <rust5> I think it just depends. some of us just do not have the love thing, as an emotional thing
05:36:30 <Nothing\> A young person's (<25y/o) frontal/prefrontal lobe isn't developed enough for them to make any realistic... predictions? not quite the word i'm thinking but it'll do. About what will happen as a result of lifechanging events.
05:36:54 <rust5> that is also a thing
05:38:46 <Nothing\> for example in the case of a 19 y/o who ran down a wife and child with his father's lambo, a psychologist pointed out that somebody his age wouldn't be able to fully comprehend the long term implications of such an action if things went badly, as they did. And doubly so if he's just considering whether his actions might have long term consequences. Most young people will have unrealistic notions of how such a situa
05:38:47 <Nothing\> it'll never happen to me." syndrome. Or if they're a rich daddy's boy, they're used to somebody always cleaning up their messes for them so they just figure that'll happen again if something happens.
05:39:52 <Nothing\> just as an example of how a young person's lack of development can affect their ability to understand the implications of things in the long run
05:40:56 <Nothing\> you know, i wish i had thought to use that defense when i was arrested for smuggling morphine into a psychiatric hospital when i was 15
05:41:00 <Nothing\> lol
05:42:04 <Nothing\> i remember being so pissed when i was in jail for that, i read about an adult woman who was arrested for selling morphine and had a hell of a lot more than just then ONE tablet that i had. She got to serve her sentence on weekends and got less probation than i did and no community service.
05:42:19 <Nothing\> but that's what happens when you let the government pay for your lawyer
05:42:58 <Nothing\> lol in seriousness though it is what it is. I find it amusing in retrospect and honestly i probably needed a bigger slap in the face than that at the time.
05:43:18 <Nothing\> oh hey rust5 did i show you what i got my mum for xmas?
05:43:26 <Nothing\> i can't remember if i showed you or jay or both
05:43:35 <rust5> yes, a couple times
05:43:59 <Nothing\> lol sorry. I'm just so excited and if I don't gush about it to you guys, i'll end up gushing about it to my mum.
05:44:05 <Nothing\> plus crystals are friggin cool.
05:44:38 <Nothing\> lol i forget what i bought but i wound up buying more stuff for her last night. So that makes like 40 presents i've got. No clue how I'm gonna wrap these.
05:45:54 <rust5> 12 layers of duct tape, and baling wire
05:46:31 <Nothing\> lol that's about how they came packaged
05:46:35 <rust5> or whatever steel wire you have. piano wire will do, or guitar strings
05:46:59 <Nothing\> i actually have most of a roll of steel wire with rubber coating so there ya go lol
05:47:05 <Nothing\> it's rigid but it'll do
05:47:37 <Nothing\> lol i originally bought it to make a solenoid out of. Then I quickly realized why it's a bad idea to make the coils of an inductor out of magnetic wire.
05:47:43 <rust5> when you have around 10 alternating layers of that and tape, it will be ok
05:47:52 <Nothing\> super
05:48:00 <Nothing\> so i'll just do that for every piece i have
05:48:04 <rust5> yes
05:48:15 <Nothing\> oh yeah i bought her some cutesy cat stickers for the walls too
05:48:25 <Nothing\> she likes stuff like that
05:48:54 <Nothing\> i thought it was unique though. You don't usually see stickers for walls.
05:49:11 <rust5> you can stuff them in a balloon, and put that in a suitable cardboard box, then fill with gravel and epoxy
05:49:13 <Nothing\> not decorative ones anyways. Maybe ones a kid puts on there or something.
05:50:14 <Nothing\> rust5, actually i have popcorn ceilings so if i put them in a balloon she can just volleyball bump the balloon onto the ceiling and most of the time popcorn ceings will pop a balloon. So the idea is it pops and these 50g rocks will rain down on my mum's head.
05:50:45 <Nothing\> lol
05:51:09 <rust5> uh, okay
05:51:11 <Nothing\> if you don't know, popcorn ceiling is another term for stucko
05:51:23 <Nothing\> i just realized you might not know what that is
05:51:34 <rust5> nah, but I had an idea
05:51:41 <Nothing\> right on
05:52:45 <Nothing\> oh man i was trying to find information about some of these crystals on google last night and a lot of times the first result was about healing crystals and crap like that
05:52:52 <Nothing\> so disappointing
05:57:35 <Nothing\> kneomknomekntomenkmoekntmeonktmoenkmoenktmnoekmnoekmnoetkmnoemk
05:57:39 <Nothing\> lol oops
05:57:49 <Nothing\> forgot to turn of my keymashing macro
05:58:19 <rust5> is that how a balloon sounds, if you rub it on a glass table, in canadian?
05:59:29 <Nothing\> sort of. But there are no latin or even IPA characters to write some of the sounds.
05:59:38 <Nothing\> think, glottal trill
06:00:50 <Nothing\> man, i tried wax carving last night and it did not go well
06:01:41 <Nothing\> i just wanted to carve a simple cube but the stuff like, flakes apart. It doesn't cut evenly. Even if you heat the knife it just cools within a second and you don't even come close to cutting it all the way and it just comes off as chunks again.
06:01:45 <rust5> has to be easier than melted was carving...
06:01:55 <Nothing\> i'm thinking maybe a piece of nichrome wire
06:02:21 <Nothing\> rust5, i guessi could melt it and make a mold
06:02:28 <Nothing\> ice cub trays work well
06:02:55 <Nothing\> actually hell that's what i should do to reform my scrap wax. Melt it and pour it into a silicone ice cube tray.
06:02:56 <rust5> any sort of thin wire, and wrap it onto a soldering iron, and make a loop on the end, to cut with?
06:03:12 <Nothing\> i didn't even think of conducted heat
06:03:34 <Nothing\> i was just tihnking of running power through a nichrome wire wrapped around 2 pieces of dowel so i don't burn myself
06:03:37 <rust5> it can not take very much heat, I guess?
06:03:59 <Nothing\> nah, the stuff actually starts melting just from the heat of my hands while i'm handling it. It's kind of annoynig.
06:04:32 <Nothing\> not at all like soap lol
06:05:07 <Nothing\> actually i ordered sodium hydroxide from aliexpress the other day. I should use that to make soap.
06:05:30 <Nothing\> was just gonna melt it and then pour it on my arm to see what it feels like but i think this would be more productive.
06:05:42 <Nothing\> although i guess either way i'm making soap.
06:06:07 <rust5> you can be weird, and try to make usable soap.
06:06:31 <Nothing\> lol or make soap from fat stolen from liposuction clinics like in fight club
06:06:47 <Nothing\> selling the rich their fat asses back to them
06:07:13 <Nothing\> it's funny, for a movie that was so anticorporation, it sure had a lot of Pepsi ads in it.
06:07:15 <rust5> use it to fry donuts. that makes more sense
06:07:32 <Nothing\> actually i've wanted to. If it's food grade.
06:07:43 <rust5> food grade ass fat?
06:07:48 <Nothing\> i know lye makes for lovely maillard reactions. They use it in pretzels.
06:07:55 <Nothing\> oh that ahahahaha
06:08:01 <Nothing\> i totally misunderstood.
06:08:07 <rust5> sell it back to the somewhat fat people
06:08:25 <Nothing\> ah this city's too poor for liposuction clinics
06:08:34 <Nothing\> there's a botox clinic like a block from here that's about it.
06:08:52 <Nothing\> hell our busses don't even have live schedules
06:09:20 <Nothing\> we also have 1 walmart, 1 hospital and 1 library to serve 150,000 people
06:09:39 <Nothing\> i mention the walmart because that means they're almost always sold out of most basics
06:11:11 <Nothing\> it's really sad. This city was nice in the 80's. We had a bustling 3 storey mall with an equally large car park. A lively and active downtown with beautiful parks I remember taking my german relatives to. Lots of big companies like Massey Ferguson (farm equipment).
06:13:58 <Nothing\> seems like everything's going down hill. But this city especially.
06:14:25 <Nothing\> i'm just glad i don't remember much at all of anything before 1998
06:15:46 <rust5> oh, don't worry, it will get worse
06:22:06 <Nothing\> rust5, 2 things i've found with life. History always repeats (locally and globally) and things always trend towards getting worse. I guess from gaining entropy over time? i dunno.
06:23:06 <rust5> I think the people in our areas have just had to too good for a while. it has to stop at some point
06:23:14 <Nothing\> as for the history repeating itself. The universe has shown it trends towards whatever requires the least amount of energy and it would definitely take less energy to keep repeating the same general things
06:23:35 <Nothing\> agreed
06:23:45 <Nothing\> for the west in general
06:35:25 Quit: Kuschelpony ([email protected]) Connection closed
07:21:18 Quit: MrMobodies ([email protected]) Ping timeout: 121 seconds
08:58:57 <Nothing\> welll that sucks
08:59:42 <Nothing\> all of the TV stands for 75in tvs were... pretty much non-existent except for a few that i'm not even sure the store was ever meant to carry.
09:00:49 <Nothing\> i wound up buying a wall mount which the installation cost was almost twice the cost of the mount
09:01:32 <Nothing\> but if i bought the proper mount with the full range of motion it would have been nearly $1,000
09:02:08 <rust5> I told you to get a 55" tv.........
09:02:14 <rust5> but noooo

09:26:15 <Nothing\> wow
09:26:41 <Nothing\> my new tv has 17,500cm^2 of surface area
09:28:29 <Nothing\> it sucks though. it was supposed to be delivered on the 9th but I found my stand i have is a few inches too small so I had to get another one but they have very few stands for such large tv so i got a wall mount but it can't be installed until at the earliest, the end of the month. Latest is some time in january.
09:31:41 <rust5> it cn not be installed... they put a no use before date, on a tv bracket thing?
09:32:01 <rust5> do not open before chrustmas?

09:37:15 <steve30> hi
09:38:02 <rust5> hey-o
09:48:26 <Nothing\> lol pretty much rust5
09:49:00 <Nothing\> that's fine though. I've got this 30in thing i can make do with in the mean time. But just measuring the dimensions for the space I need for it... this thing is gonna be a behemoth
09:49:19 <Nothing\> heh i remember like 5-7 years ago seeing an 80in tv and being blown away
09:49:37 <Nothing\> I guess this means in another 5-7 years I'll be buying a 105in tv
09:50:14 <rust5> yes, you probably will, except that tvs might be too expensive to buy by then
09:51:06 <Nothing\> i'm an iraqi doodle dandy

10:21:42 <Ampera> I drove my mom around today. She got another cat.
10:21:48 <Ampera> so we had to pick it up
10:21:57 <Halcyon> Stupid cat
10:22:39 <Ampera> on the way someone decided checking what's behind them while switching lanes was optional
10:22:59 <Halcyon> Fun
10:23:04 <Halcyon> Nothing like playing guessing games in traffic
10:23:11 <Ampera> no guessing, just ABS
10:23:59 <Halcyon> And horn?
10:24:09 <Ampera> oh yes
10:24:14 <Ampera> just a touch
10:25:31 <Halcyon> Anyway, I'm off, I'll chat to you later
10:25:36 * Halcyon cuddles Ampera on the way out

14:20:19 <EEVBot> ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
14:20:19 <Nothing\> they're not the greatest lasers but still, free is good
14:20:19 <electrohead> Nothing\: what lasers?
14:20:19 <Nothing\> just <5ma
14:20:19 <Nothing\> mw
14:20:19 <Nothing\> nothing fancy
14:20:19 <rust5> I do not say you should keep him. just that he might be a good guy, for something else... I dunno?
14:20:19 <electrohead> rust5: yeah, for cleaning the bathroom
14:20:19 <Nothing\> my green laser is ancient and anything but collimated from being knocked around so much over 10 years or so so i decided to get a new one
14:20:19 <electrohead> dude can't even put omnex controllers together, without the rubber gaskets sticking out the side, making them break
14:20:19 <Nothing\> and i saw the store had 405nm violet/uv lasers too. Basically just repurposed blu-ray diodes. But they're only $3 a pop so i figured why not
14:20:19 <Nothing\> heh it's cool hitting glow in the dark stuff with the 405nm laser
14:20:19 <Nothing\> actually i have a CRT TV i've been tearing down and when I put the laser on the screen the phosphors glowed bright enough to leave a trail
14:20:19 <Nothing\> i've had my UV flashlight light up the phosphors all white/grey before but never bright enough to show any sort of persistence I could notice
14:20:19 <Nothing\> it reminds me of way back in the day i thnik with my old 13in trinitron when you turned it off at night, you could still see a little glowing white dot in the center for a while.
14:20:19 <rust5> Nothing\ have you seen torque test channel testing "cat toy" lasers?
14:20:19 <Nothing\> and come to think of it, one of my last CRT TVs had sort of the same thing, except the white dot was always there. Just a glowing white dot barely visible in the dark. Not from burn-in or anything like that.
14:20:19 <Nothing\> lol no i don't believe so
14:20:19 <Nothing\> i shall look it up
14:20:19 <rust5> yes. you should . some are good enough to burn a hole in your cat
14:20:19 <Nothing\> oh yeha i've seen this in my recommendations i haven't watched it yet though
14:20:19 <Nothing\> yeah chinese lasers are unreasonably powerful
14:20:19 <Nothing\> i won't even use a <5mw laser with my cats unless it's a red one from a pet store
14:20:19 <Nothing\> or i'll use the laser sight that they put on my IR thermometer for some reason.
14:20:19 <Nothing\> it beeps so when my one cat hears the beep it drives her nuts and she looks all over for a laser
14:20:19 <Nothing\> kinda makes it hard when i actually need to use the thermometer for something ell
14:20:19 <Nothing\> *lol
14:20:19 <rust5> I use the "laser" on my bosch level thing. i can make a nice red dot on the wall, on the other side of the neighbors livingroom. it is pretty ok
14:20:19 <Nothing\> yeah the green one i have goes way the hell up to the sky. If the clouds are low enough i can actually hit them.
14:20:19 <Nothing\> i guess green's easiest to see because the human eye is most sensitive to that wavelength. Hence you can see the beam easier in the air. So I hear.
14:20:19 <Nothing\> oh man or when there was a snow storm the other day, that was something else
14:20:19 <Nothing\> or thankfully i had a couple of early mornings (before sunrise) when it was really foggy out. Great laser weather.
14:20:19 <rust5> I really have no interest in lasers, but I think I maybe want 3 or 4 laser pointers. I want to make a wheel alignment thingie
14:20:19 <Nothing\> or another cool thing to do with laser pens if you have a camera that lets you set the exposure time. You can set a long exposure in a dark room and then do "light painting" with your lasers. it's a really caal effect
