19:49:53 <disgracian> Evening all. Would anyone like to help with my little "stop myself losing my connection to the server after 5 minutes of inactivity" script?
19:50:42 <damian> are you using mIRC?
19:50:44 <disgracian> Yes.
19:51:39 <damian> and you lose connection every five minutes of inactivity?
19:51:53 <disgracian> The script is doing what I want it to. It pings either chanop or myself every 5 minutes (I'm usually dropped within 10 if nobody says anything in any of the channels I'm in).
19:52:05 <damian> that's odd
19:52:11 <disgracian> But that doesn't seem enough to keep the connection alive.
19:52:12 <damian> that's what the server ping pong is for
19:52:18 <BlackDevil> /remote off
19:52:22 <disgracian> Indeed.
19:52:25 <BlackDevil> then /timers off
19:52:37 <damian> what server are you on?
19:53:10 <disgracian> ezehost.il.us.austnet.org
19:53:29 <damian> odd
19:53:44 <damian> does it only happen with austnet?
19:54:22 <disgracian> No, I don't think it's limited to Austnet. Normally the other servers I use are too busy for this to be a factor. But I lost connection to Dalnet by idling without joingin any channels.
19:54:30 <disgracian> So I'd say it's an IRC thing in general.
19:54:46 <damian> then i'd be more keen to find out the underlying problem
19:54:55 <disgracian> I've tried.
19:55:01 <damian> ie; a setting you have on your machine to drop inactive connections, or on your gateway / modem
19:55:15 <damian> try harder son!
19:55:48 <disgracian> LOL.
19:56:30 <disgracian> Router's packet filter is off, no blocking of pings, etc.
19:57:05 <damian> what brand is it? :P
19:57:10 <disgracian> Billion 7300G.
19:58:20 <damian> is it randomly stabbed with something?
19:58:27 <disgracian> You'd think so.
19:58:44 <damian> no idea
19:58:52 <disgracian> At the moment, I'm using an extremely ugly workaround that seems to suffice. I was just hoping there was a neater way of doing it.
19:59:01 <damian> how are you doing it?
19:59:07 <disgracian> A timer script messages myself every 5 minutes then closes the window automatically.
19:59:19 <damian> fun
19:59:20 <disgracian> Actual channel or private conversation seems to be the only thing that keeps the connection active.
19:59:27 <disgracian> Yeah, it's pretty crude.
19:59:53 <damian> does it work if you message nothing?
20:00:01 <damian> then you can make it seemless
20:00:53 <disgracian> I didn't know you could message nothing. I thought /msg needed 2 parameters.
20:01:05 <damian> by nothing, i mean an invalid nickname
20:01:09 <damian> or does it need a return privmsg
20:01:19 <disgracian> I'll try.
20:01:21 <damian> because you could /msg @ @
20:01:26 <damian> and then raw out the invalid message
20:01:34 <damian> so you don't get a popup every minute or two
20:01:48 <disgracian> True.
20:02:26 <disgracian> I've been on IRC and Austnet for around 10 years and I've never had to do anything so ridiculous to stay online.
20:06:04 <Longie> disgracian try another server, your one has had weird issues lately
20:06:08 * Longie stabs damienne
20:07:29 <disgracian> I doubt that will help. I've tried nz.austnet, au., sg., us., etc.
20:07:42 <disgracian> And I don't think it's even isolated to Austnet.
20:09:32 <Longie> ah, how gay
20:09:35 <Longie> router issue?
20:09:47 <Longie> speaking of router im getting a beer, who wants one?
20:11:14 <Longie> uh oh i think my gf did something bad, theres vb in the fridge and she hates it, its what i drink but normally she buys beer we both can
20:11:28 <Longie> damienne, should i go to the shops?
20:12:05 <disgracian> Hehe. If you never ask you'll never find out what she did wrong.
20:12:12 <disgracian> And you'll have VB, so it's a win-win situation.
20:12:44 <Longie> haha niec
20:12:55 <Longie> it might be a 'thankyou for buying coke and lemonade' thugh
20:13:01 <Longie> but i didnt get that message until after i came home
20:13:09 <stefan> ah hah, let me find the page you need to change disgracian, there's a NAT timeout setting that will fix your issue
20:13:13 <Longie> i didnt get to get on irc from work so i never knew lol
20:13:24 <Longie> woot, so i was on the right path-ish
20:13:26 <Longie> good ol stef
20:13:32 <Longie> smart tall and handsome,
20:13:36 <stefan> it's just not documented :\
20:13:45 <stefan> the irony is it was actually our old friend petem that found it
20:14:40 <damian> danielle!
20:15:04 <damian> haha daniel
20:15:08 <stefan> disgracian, provided you didn't change the router ip, http://192.168.1.253/ic.asp
20:15:17 <damian> i disappeared to go get myself some grog
20:15:22 <damian> great minds! *headbutts*
20:16:28 <stefan> whoops, 254 is the default ip actually
20:19:04 <disgracian> Interesting.
20:19:08 <disgracian> BRB, dinner.
20:20:53 <disgracian> Only thing I can change of interest is the timeout value for established TCP connections on port >1024
20:21:04 <disgracian> But it's set at 120 seconds, and I'm lasting a lot longer than that.
20:22:33 <stefan> set it to 300 or more and you'll probably find it works
20:22:59 <stefan> 5 minutes (300s) is what irc networks generally use for timeouts, ie it'll keep your session alive every 5 mins minimum
20:23:05 <stefan> maximum rather
20:24:01 <Longie> i just saw on top of the fridge
20:24:13 <Longie> thereslike 4 bottles of crap uot of no where
20:24:17 <Longie> and more beer in the fridge
20:24:28 <Longie> im starting to wonder what the hell tomorrows going to be like
20:24:38 <Longie> maybe its a surprise party. better not start early *shakes fist*
20:25:03 <damian> lol
20:25:22 <Longie> how are ya anyway man, havent spoken to you in donkeys
20:26:02 <damian> yeah, it's been a while

21:31:22 <damian> the longer you spend on austnet, the more you realise Lwaxana has the mental age of a five year old.
21:33:30 <paris> lol
21:33:36 <paris> what did she do
21:34:07 <damian> just her in general
21:34:25 <damian> (@Lwaxana) 'SERVICES (ChanOp, NickOp etc) Are OFFLINE.
21:34:36 <damian> ' instead of ` ?? (if not, what was the ' for)
21:34:44 <damian> bold is understandable ..
21:34:52 <damian> capital A on Are??
21:35:05 <damian> 'SERVICES' and 'OFFLINE' in bold, 'ARE' isn't?!
21:35:19 <paris> (09:30pm) <@Lwaxana> 'SERVICES (ChanOp, NickOp etc) Are OFFLINE.
21:35:19 <paris> (09:30pm) <paris> i think a nice shade of pink would show more emphasis
21:35:35 <damian> and her constant use of sms language on irc
