1996 1997 1998 1999 2000 2001 2002 2003 2004 2005 2006 2007 2008 2009 2010 2011 2012 2013 2014 2015 2016
00:24:00 <gee_man> my internet drops out when it rains
00:24:00 <gee_man> fttn ftw
00:32:00 <electrohead> no bueno
00:51:00 <gee_man> 'sall good, helps me prepare for the apocalypse
01:00:00 <electrohead> :p
01:01:00 <electrohead> digitally speaking, I'm well enough prepared
01:01:00 <electrohead> I've been saving/archiving so much data, in terms of science, physics, sewing, food, .. you name it, I have information on it
01:14:00 <gee_man> do you keep copies of wiki dumps?
01:15:00 <gee_man> at one stage i was going to buy a nas for that purpose
01:15:00 <gee_man> the dumps are released twice monthly
01:16:00 <gee_man> i figured i could do some uber compression by extracting the .bz2 and .gz dump files and deduplicate all the dumps
01:16:00 <gee_man> would've compressed pretty high being mostly text
01:17:00 <gee_man> then i discovered there was not only wikipedia, but thousands of wikis, then on top of that, in different languages
01:17:00 <electrohead> yeah I have the full english wikipedia downloaded
01:18:00 <gee_man> with images?
01:19:00 <electrohead> I need just a bit more storage to keep images
01:19:00 <gee_man> seriously, the wiki foundation should make it compulsory to have all their images in vector format
01:19:00 <electrohead> I had them downloaded in the past, but deleted them because I needed the space
01:21:00 <gee_man> i wanted to download all the dumps, not just the latest ones, but the problem was they'd be in extracted format instead of compressed, and there's no way to recompress files with the same hash
01:21:00 <gee_man> it was a learning experience
01:21:00 <gee_man> it could be possible by getting the same specs as the machine they're compressed with, but even then it's not guaranteed
01:22:00 <electrohead> I have 4 x 8TB drives, in a RAID 5 config
01:22:00 <electrohead> 22 TB usable
01:22:00 <gee_man> nice
01:22:00 <electrohead> by the end of this year, I'll be upgrading my storage solution
01:23:00 <gee_man> btrfs?
01:23:00 <gee_man> something more stable?
01:26:00 <gee_man> i wanted to get 5x8tv ssd's (because the noise of the hdd's would bug me)
01:26:00 <gee_man> 5x8tb*
01:28:00 <gee_man> it would've been satisfying being able to reproduce any original .gz. or .bz2 file from any month of any year since backups started
01:29:00 <electrohead> hard drive and fan noises put me to sleep :p
01:29:00 <electrohead> and, the file system is ext4
01:29:00 <gee_man> yeah i thought you'd go with something more stable
01:29:00 <electrohead> it's definitely stable!
01:29:00 <electrohead> I'll probably look into RAID Z
01:30:00 <electrohead> but for the upgrade, I was more implying getting a different chasis, and adding way more hard drives
01:30:00 <gee_man> cool
01:30:00 <gee_man> how much usable space do you expect to have?
01:31:00 <gee_man> maybe a petabyte?
01:33:00 <gee_man> i guess you don't know yet
01:38:00 <electrohead> not sure yet
01:38:00 <electrohead> a petabyte would be nice :D
01:44:00 <gee_man> i would've used btrfs if i go ahead with it (still considering) but judging by the amount of problems btrfs has with users losing data, i don't like my chances, regardless of redundancy
01:44:00 <electrohead> exactly
01:44:00 <electrohead> I've never had issues with ext4
01:44:00 <electrohead> so, I stuck with that
01:44:00 <gee_man> what would you recommend for deduplication?
01:45:00 <electrohead> I've never got that far, never had issues
01:46:00 <gee_man> i guess my other option would be to do what i started out to do, and use a compression/backup program to back up a huge 12 month archive
01:47:00 <gee_man> that would solve dedupe
01:47:00 <gee_man> i'd need so much redundancy tho
01:49:00 <gee_man> the idea was to use a reverse incremental backup solution for every wiki
01:49:00 <gee_man> then when i realised i'd need images for every dump, that i should use btrfs
01:51:00 <gee_man> there's like 1 single chinese lady that writes custom scripts on the btrfs mailing list to fix people's partittions when they've lost data
01:52:00 <gee_man> i don't want to have to rely on that
01:52:00 <electrohead> heh
01:52:00 <electrohead> I'd love to have a tape backup system
01:52:00 <gee_man> yeah i looked into that too
01:53:00 <gee_man> hdd's are at about parity in cost tho
02:01:00 <eddie> moo: hdd: C:\ 399.63GB/476.31GB D:\ 1.09TB/1.82TB E:\ 2.44TB/3.64TB F:\ 482.96GB/512.09GB
02:01:00 <eddie> and not a bit of moving rust in this machine..
02:01:00 <electrohead> hey eddie o/
02:02:00 <eddie> electrohead
02:02:00 <eddie> how be you ?
02:02:00 <gee_man> ey eddit
02:02:00 <gee_man> eddie*
02:02:00 <eddie> hola
02:03:00 <electrohead> I be good, how you be? lol
02:03:00 <eddie> I want to replace the moving rust in my qnap NAS(s) but $$$$$$$ would kill me
02:03:00 <electrohead> heh, yeah money is always the issue
02:03:00 <eddie> not too bad.. had a swim today as the weather was not too bad.. supposed to be cooler and wet in the next few days.
02:04:00 <electrohead> yeah it's raining here, right now
02:04:00 <gee_man> i was going to get a synology disk station 5x or 8x bays
02:04:00 <electrohead> sucks, as I have some stuff to finish up, outside
02:04:00 <eddie> I will have to get to the shop and get some paint as I want to get the door frames sorted before winter
02:05:00 <eddie> <- I put in a tender for a 15m Clark pump-up mast (for radio use)..
02:05:00 <eddie> and won it..
02:06:00 <electrohead> lol
02:06:00 <gee_man> sweet
02:07:00 <eddie> just waiting for it to arrive and to see what I need to do to make it work remotely.. so I can get a decent antenna up (vert for 2m / 70cms / 23Cms and a pair of halos for 2m SSB use).
02:07:00 <eddie> no trouble with cable.. I have some 500m of lmr400 in stock,, as well as other cable.
02:09:00 <electrohead> that's the last part of setting up the house I need to do - getting everything re-mounted
02:09:00 <electrohead> fun times
02:09:00 <eddie> I am toying with the idea to put my 2.4Ghz access point on it.. or maybe my 2.3Ghz ATV antenna on it and drive it with my 60watt amp (covers the first 3 channels on 2.4Ghz wifi :)
02:10:00 <gee_man> your neighbours will lose wifi lol
02:10:00 <eddie> umm that should kill 2.4Ghz wifi for the suburb
02:11:00 <eddie> well wifi is an ISM band so P~~~~ to them
02:11:00 <gee_man> lol
02:11:00 <eddie> let them use 5Ghz...
02:12:00 <gee_man> the cake is faster on 5ghz
02:12:00 <eddie> oopps there is a 5.6Ghz amateur band as well... Oh dear.. and a mate has a 100watt amp for that as well.. umm antenna what would I use...
02:13:00 <gee_man> i don't know much about rf, but i want to
02:13:00 <eddie> he used a 27m dish to bounce a signal off to the moon some time back. used his 1 watt exciter and managed an FM contact to the UK
02:13:00 <gee_man> wow that's awesome
02:13:00 <eddie> <-- been doing RF stuff for a dammn long time..
02:14:00 <eddie> have a card from NASA here, I talked to a space shuttle from here..
02:14:00 <gee_man> ha!
02:15:00 <eddie> umm bed time :( have to be awak at 6am (less than 6 hours time).
02:15:00 <gee_man> yeah same
02:15:00 <eddie> tired be I
02:15:00 <gee_man> nite folks
02:15:00 <eddie> <-- located in PErth
02:15:00 <gee_man> <-- canberra
02:15:00 <eddie> cyas gee_man
02:15:00 <eddie> Oh too much morriscum there
02:16:00 <gee_man> i'd love to learn more about radio hardware, but not sure those who have influence over me would permit it due to my instability (even though i believe i'd be fine)
02:16:00 <eddie> umm would not be hard..
02:16:00 <eddie> maybe join a Amateur Radio Club
02:16:00 <gee_man> scummo will be out the door in a few months
02:17:00 <eddie> get the foundation licence...
02:17:00 <gee_man> yeah all these things cost money that i don't have
02:17:00 <gee_man> i've got $20.15 until payday
02:17:00 <electrohead> I just re-upped my ARRL membership recently, since I love the magazines
02:17:00 <eddie> my artie housemate got his licence
02:18:00 <eddie> gee_man spending too much ??? oh dear
02:18:00 <eddie> <<-- on a pension so have very limited income.. Sigh..
02:18:00 <eddie> cyas electrohead / gee_man
02:18:00 <gee_man> yeah, i'm in about $6k debt
02:18:00 <gee_man> seeya
02:18:00 <eddie> Zzzzzz........
02:18:00 <gee_man> maybe $7k now
02:19:00 <gee_man> haven't really started chipping away at it yet
02:19:00 <electrohead> later mate o/
02:20:00 <gee_man> i would sleep, but i get to enjoy relative silence and solitude (aside from online) during the night
02:21:00 <gee_man> such is the life of a writer
