20:15:00 <auntie_joan> oh wow, i thought of you when he was going over.. we are getting some work from Shanghai tv , creative input for some of their commercials

20:16:00 <Glenn> That's great! The standard of television over there has dramatically changed over recent years, and even t6heir commercials can be interesting!

20:17:00 <auntie_joan> yes, they want to westernize them more, and we know the guy who is their rep in Australia, who has organised it all

20:17:00 <Glenn> They have certainly done that, but the technlogy they are now using to produce them is pretty amazing, considering they had almost nothing about 10 years ago.
20:18:00 <auntie_joan> i bet, we arent going to be involved in the actual production, just the creative input, but its going to be a major challenge for our little company
20:19:00 <auntie_joan> i said i need to pay a visit to china to find out more about their customs, so I dont accidentally disrespect them when they call :P
20:19:00 <Glenn> I'd never been to ShangHai before... and was also taken by the fact that ShangHai taxi drivers are so proud of their city, they are very happy to take you to all sorts of places on the way to the required destination!

20:22:00 <Glenn> Oh yes... the first guy took me around the block a couple of times and then too the "long" route to the destination... not a prob until I photographed is driver ID on the dashboard, showed him the Chinese map I had been tracing the route with... and my mobile 'phone with his company's 'phone number already punched into it. I explained in Chinese (destianation request had been in English), that I felt that there should be no fare.

20:24:00 <Glenn> The second taxi driver was told to halt in Chinese the moment he diverted away from the correct/direct route.... and I showed him the map and also explained that I could also read and write Chinese far better than I could spaek it. He then chose to go th correct route, but also wisely turned off the meter.

20:25:00 <Glenn> Easily! It is so busy, so confusing that you lose sense of direction in minutes.
20:26:00 <auntie_joan> luckily my boss was squired around by the shanghai tv rep, and often by the actual bosses of the station
20:27:00 <Glenn> Another "game" I became quite good at was staring down busses who try to bully you off pedestrian crossings. I know that as a Westerner, I am a "sacred cow" in China.... the drivers also know that.... but don't know that I know! I actually directed a bus to back up about two feet when he tried to push me off the crossing! The was a policeman watching nearby as well... :P

20:30:00 <Glenn> Yes... tourist money is becoming big business now in China... and Westerners have plenty.

20:32:00 <Glenn> In NanJing, more tha half of two wheeled transport is electric scooters. They are a menace because you can hear the creaking of bicycles, the engine of motor scooters and motor cycles, but those electric ones are not only fast, but are totally sneaky silent!

20:35:00 <Glenn> More than once I almost secumbed to the natural Australian reaction to that sort of thing... the aching desire to pass the offending horn to the owner.

20:37:00 <auntie_joan> i actually bought my boss a nice book on etiquette before he went there, because he is a bit of an ocker and doesnt have much idea about that sort of thing
