AustNet servers operate a dynamic connection limit system, known as “triggers”. The purpose of this system is twofold:

● To provide our clients with a method to connect to IRC additional clients above the default limit, where a legitimate requirement exists, and
● To reduce the effects of clone/flooding attacks by imposing lower-than-default connection limits on commonly abused IP ranges, without resorting to complete network bans

Every client that connects to AustNet already has a trigger, by default, allowing 3 connections from the same IP address. Certain hosts and ISPs are granted a higher trigger automatically. Clients can request a higher trigger, either permanent or temporary, provided a valid reason is given and network policy is adhered to. Some valid reasons include:

● a LAN party, swap-meet, or other get-together where IRC use would be reasonably expected
● shared accommadation
● Internet Cafes
● hosting a friendly bot

Some reasons that WOULD NOT be accepted:

● extra clients to fill a channel (get some real users in the channel instead)
● ‘because I disconnect a lot’ (that’s ok, the trigger system will wait for your old connections to time out)

Any request for a trigger will of course be reviewed by AustNet administration. We reserve the right to accept, refuse, or revoke any trigger at our sole discretion.

Triggers no longer require a static- or sticky- IP, clients can ‘log in’ to triggers with minimal configuration to their IRC client. We request all clients use the same or a partially matching userid@ where possible to demonstrate clients are properly configured and to eliminate any rogue programs abusing the trigger.

● number of connections required
● reason for the extra connections
● information on your connection, is it ADSL, cable, dial-up? Static- or Dynamic- IP?
● IRC clients (eg, mIRC, irsii, BitchX) or bots (eg, mIRC scripted, eggdrop) to be connected
● Shared or wildmask userid@ that clients will be connecting under
