Austnet Help Updates
Just as a note to those who are interested - ASD Managers have now got an application form up and ready to run. Currently it is not in webform format, that will be changed. For now, interested parties can select ASD Applications and fill it out, and email it to [email protected] or [email protected].
We also have linked up and ready to go, applications for those who are interest in assisting users in #help. To view their website and application form, check out the #help Helper Application form.
Common Ident
One of the most comment nickop errors that everyone gets, is ident being too common. This is generally in place because of various trojans/virii/clones/drones/proxies and of course spambots.
We have a list below of the common idents that will prevent you from either registering, or identifying to your nicknames.
me. none - … blah *guess hello iceinviter hehe your_email youruserid Prototype scp58 coolmirc polaris akuma |
enter FrEaK user shoppore proto-8th asdf leopard TURKsz ___ __________ EuroUSER hi services Italy AntiVirus ………. |
In order to change your ident, you need to do the following:
These instructions are for mIRC users.
Type //identd on $me then /quit the IRC server and then rejoin, this should fix the problem.
However sometimes it may have something to do with your email that has been set. If that’s the case, you need to fix that aswell. This can be done with this command in mIRC.
/emailaddr [email protected]
Changes the email address in the Connect dialog - then you can disconnect from the server with /quit and then reconnect to the server and hopefully you would be able to change your ident.
*suggestions on how to improve this article can be noteopped to lolly
Some changes to Services
There have been a few changes happening around on the network lately. Some of you may have noticed that ChanOP has changed nicks, to ChanOp - purely cosmetic, but just a hint of what is coming.
LoveOp, after nearly 10 yrs has called it quits. She decided to hang up her wedding dresses, her flowers and garters and run off with GameOp.
So #chapel and #loveop are now closed down for renovations; Netpriests have been defrocked.
GameOp functions have been moved to ChanOp. When you type in `8ball Your question here - ChanOp will reply - Example is below.
:Vapid: `8ball Am I alive?
:ChanOp: 8ball: Am I alive??? Never.!!
As further changes are tested and implemented, more shall be revealed.
we have recently suffered Distributed Denial of Service Attacks (DDoS) which increases netsplits and degrades performance of the IRC servers – this in the majority of cases is the reason why you will experience delay, netsplits or loss of connection with our network. this results from several known users launching attacks against our IRC servers; we are currently working with the Australian High Tech Crime Centre (AHTCC), a division of the Australian Federal Police (AFP), NSW Police E-Crime Unit, Queensland Police Computer Crime Investigation Unit (CGIU), South Australia Police Electronic Crime Section (ECS), Western Australia Police Computer Crime Investigation Team and the Victorian Computer Crime Squad to bring such users to court and criminal punishment, as this activity is illegal and now monitored by the majority of Internet Service Providers (ISPs) around the country and world.
moreover, we are also working very closely with major service providers to trace the origins of DDoS attacks using packet capturing and filtering on their core routers for users launching such attacks. check out the law’s latest catch on http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4EryVTX6w3I

#AVA is one of our unique features of AustNet, AustNet’s virus help channel.
#AVA was first registered Sat Oct 31 1998 and has been going strong ever since.
AVA is a great team of volunteer helpers who are available to assist any IRC/Austnet users that might be infected by trojans/worms and other nasties. #AVA has helped many IRC/Austnet users over the 9 years it has been operating and has made available removals, tutorials and help files to assist in the removal process.
HELP !! HELP !! I am infected ….
If you ever feel you have become infected with a virus and join #AVA for help, please be patient and polite, chances are we are busy helping someone else and whilst we might not immediately respond to your first panicked screams, someone will be with you as soon as possible. Please remember it is your responsibility to keep your computer clean and there are many free Anti-virus programs available on the Internet for your use.
Just ask your AVA helper, we are here to assist.
Over all, we are a friendly bunch of ops, always happy to help.

As AustNet now has mode +R, many channels have set it, so that only registered users who have identified to NickOP can access these channels. We have had many questions from users who do not know how to use services, how to register their nicks, and how to identify to them.
To REGISTER your nickname you must follow the instructions below. Please keep in mind that these are instructions with examples.
1: Think of a password, and write it down somewhere safe.
The password must be minimum 6 characters long, with a mix of numbers and letters
2: Use your real email address.
If you lose your password for your registered nick, ASD staff can send the password direct to your email address, with instructions on how to identify to your nickname.
3: Register your nickname.
If you are using mIRC, then please ensure you follow these instructions, and look at the screenshots below.
Query nickop to read the instructions.
Type /query nickop help
Switch to the Main AustNet Status screen, nickop will send you notices, and look for the instructions. Then type out your command to register, as seen below we have used:
/msg nickop REGISTER purpler41n [email protected] || THIS IS AN EXAMPLE ONLY
When you press enter, confirmation shows up in the Status screen that your nick is registered, the host, and that you have set mode +R
Now you can join any channel you wish.
In addition, we do have many users who keep registering new nicknames, due to the current message being sent
EG: #sydney:You need a registered nick to join that channel, please see #ASD.
This is leading to many users registering excessive nicknames, which is unnecessary. Users of Austnet are permitted only 4 nicknames per PERSON. ASD staff members are now deleting excessive nick registrations, and placing bans on addresses to stop further registration of nicks, and a message for the user to come into #ASD to learn how to identify.
What users need to do, is to remember to IDENTIFY as the nicknames they have set up previously.
You need to type the following when you next log into AustNet, otherwise you can’t join registered channels:
Ensure you are on the AustNet Status screen, and then attempt your IDENTIFICATION.
/msg [email protected] IDENTIFY purpler41n||THIS IS AN EXAMPLE ONLY
Once you have entered in your username and password, you should get a message from nickop that would look similar below, and a line that states mode: +R has been set.
If you find you are still having difficulties, feel free to join #ASD and ask questions from our helpers.
NB: AustNet are not responsible for the contents of external links away from this page.
Thank you from ASD
Hi Everyone
Over the last few weeks, ASD have had to deal with many people coming in and needing help with their nick registrations so they could access registered channels. We have been under enormous pressure to assist users, and we are doing our best. ASD would like to thank our users for being patient with us as we have attempted to do the best we can for everyone on the network.
We will be putting up some help pages for assistance with NickOP and ChanOP to start with, whilst everyone gets familiar with services and +R over the next few weeks.
On a side note, ASD managers would like to thank our ASD staff and helpers publically for their effort over the last few weeks. We are grateful for the time our staff have donated to assist our network!
