AustNet was founded in the summer of '96 by Ryan Mills (ryan) and Roger Yerramsetti (RogerY).  It originally aimed to serve as an independent Australian based chat community.  After active interest from all corners of the globe, it has expanded to cover Europe, Canada, the United States and Asia.  With a userbase expected to peak at 10,000 concurrent users by mid-2001, we're happy with both the direction and growth of something that started literally from nothing more than an idea.

The principle concept behind the network is to promote active participation by both the administration and user communities alike and to actively manage and maintain a network that serves as a communication tool for thousands of users around the world.  With over 50 volunteers managing the network on a daily basis and thousands of users active in various channels, the future of the network looks bright.

Our in house services, written by Roger, handle over 51,000 registered users and 12,000 channels network wide.  Their aim is to serve our users with both nickname and channel registration, and facilitate the online environment.

If you're new to IRC, we strongly recommend browsing through the reference library to find out a bit of history about IRC in general, and reading our New User's Guide to help you on your way.  All in all, AustNet is home to many of us and we're glad to have you aboard.

Cheers,

Ryan Mills (ryan@austnet.org)
